Lesson Overview
Students develop desktop publishing skills by creating a storybook. Students will first create and use a story
organizer. Next, students will construct a story, using their organizer as an outline. Finally, students will
create original pictures to illustrate their story. Skills include creating and modifying WordArt, inserting Clip Art
images, creating picture and text boxes, typing and editing text, and using various drawing tools.

Determine how students will be paired prior to class, if necessary. The teacher should
create a folder for each class on every computers desktop, hard drive or shared drive.

drive.
ell the class that over the next several weeks they will be retelling a famous fable or
creating a fable of their own. Discuss the elements of a fable, suggesting some ideas
that could be included in their stories. The teacher should show samples and explain
the various skills to be learned.
Launch Microsoft Publisher, choose a blank page and introduce desktop publishing
concepts. Explain the term desktop publishing. Desktop publishing is combining
graphics (pictures) with text (words). Show examples such as signs, brochures, news-
letters, magazines, illustrated stories, etc.
oday, the students will create a story organizer that will be completed in the next les-
son. Students will add WordArt, drag custom shapes to designated positions, modify
text within text boxes and add Clip Art. Demonstrate how to launch Publisher and open
the organizer template-3.pub.
Demonstrate how to add WordArt.
. Click the WordArt tool on the Objects toolbar.
. Select a style and click OK.
. A box will appear that says, Your Text Here. Delete this and type Story Orga-
nizer.
4. Type the title, change the font and click K.
. Use the WordArt toolbar to format WordArt and change the colors and lines.
. Use the handles to resize and move WordArt on the page.

. Select an oval on the side of the template.. To move the oval, place the mouse over the oval and a quad arrow will appear.
Once you see the quad arrow, you will be able to move the shape to the desired
location.

Students use spreadsheet and graphing skills to create a spreadsheet, compare data and chart the results. The projects
include entering data into a spreadsheet, charting the information and designing a word search puzzle using borders in a
spreadsheet. Skills include learning spreadsheet terminology, using a spreadsheet, writing formulas, creating and modify-

Lesson One
Make sure all necessary support documents are loaded to each computer or are avail-able on the shared drive. Determine how students will be paired prior to class, if neces-sary. Create a folder for each class on every computers desktop, shared drive or harddrive (C: drive) in which to save students work.
If you are doing the Continents project, make copies of the World Statistics handoutand the data students need from Internet sites or almanacs.
If you are integrating classroom subject material, determine what types of data the stu-dents will collect and how they will collect the data. Decide what the column headers on
their spreadsheet should be.
ntroduce the project to the class, explaining that over the next several weeks they willcreate a spreadsheet with charts (graphs) using data they collect about your integra-ion topic or different continents around the world (if you are not integrating). They willalso design a word search puzzle using the computer. Show completed samples to theclass. Discuss surveys and statistics.
Pass out the World Statistics handout. Using the Internet or other educational resources, havestudents complete the handout.
Demonstrate the program Microsoft Excel to students. Show them how to create a newspreadsheet. Introduce spreadsheets and go over terminology (rows, columns, cells,
etc.). On your blank spreadsheet, show students how to input their data and use theab and Arrow keys to move from cell to cell. After inputting the data:
Demonstrate how to resize columns.
1. Click and drag the line (must have the two arrows) between the letters repre-senting the columns.
2. Or double-click on the line between the letters representing the columns to sizeexactly.
Show how to wrap text inside a cell.
1. Click on the cell to highlight.2. Go to FORMAT/CELLS/ALIGNMENT.
