Turkey Creek Muck Removal Project
Community Presentation – February 11, 2016
Indian River Lagoon Issues
• Record-setting algal blooms
Loss of 40,000 acres of seagrass
Deaths of:
– 223 manatees
– 74 bottlenose dolphins
– 300 pelicans
• Cause
Extensive organic muck deposits
– Impact navigation
– Damage seagrass beds
– Create anoxic bottom conditions
– Impact marine species
Remedy
• Florida Legislature creates grant programs in 2014
Administered by FDEP
Initial Grant to Brevard County - $10,000,000
–Targeted removal of up to 350,000 cubic yards
of organic muck
–672 tons of total nitrogen
–144 tons of phosphorus
Follow-up grant funding approved

Environmental - Endangered Species
• In-water Endangered Species Protection
Manatees, Sea Turtles, Marine Mammals and Smalltooth Sawfish
–No dredging between May 1 – June 30
–Observers during 24/7 operations
–All personnel educated on the manatees, sea turtles and sawfish protection
–STOP WORK until animal is beyond the 50-ft. radius or 30 minutes has passed since you’ve seen the animal within the 50-ft. radius
–All vessels operate at “no wake/idle” speeds during construction
–Turbidity curtains must have eight (8) inch gap at the bottom
and be constantly monitored for entanglements
Environmental - Upland listed species
• Protection Measures for Endangered Species
