Toe

Marco Solomons verlede Oktober ’n wit UnoFiat, wat by ’n huisbraak in Monte Vista-ry-laan opgemerk is, agterna gesit.

Members from the Bothasig policestation celebrated Mandela Day byhaving a cup of coffee with some of
the senior citizens in the area. The initiative was the start of the “Cof-
fee with a Cop” project which Bothasig po-lice are implementing.
According to Warrant Officer JacquesMostert, the idea behind the project is toengagewithmembers of the community atlocations within the precinct on an infor-mal level where members and residentscan interactwith eachother andwhere thecommunity can get to know their police of-ficers.
“The Mandela Day part of the projectwas with a bit of a twist as members andstudents from Northlink College visitedsenior citizens residing within the areaand presented themwith a goodie bag con-taining coffee, sugar, milk, tea and bis-cuits. The reaction from the seniors wasvery humbling as theywere totally bowledover by this gesture from the police andvery appreciative of the fact that the policemembers and students were willing tospend some time with them and enjoy so-mething to drink and just have a chat,”says Mostert.
He says one of the seniors, Ronnie Ste-wart, was taken aback by the gesture butsurprised everyone when he producedbagpipes and amazed his visitors with hisrendition of Amazing Grace.
“Uncle Ronnie turned out to be quite thepiper. He said if all police officerswere thisnice he would have to commit crime justto meet more of them.
“At the debriefing session afterwards itwas found that the project had actually al-
so made a big impact on the members asthey also got a glimpse into the world ofsenior citizens and the conditions they ha-ve to endure. Two members, ConstablesXolisa Jikeka and Cheryll Green decided
that one of their seniors could do with alittle more heat during this cold spell andpromptly returned and surprised him bypresenting himwith a blanket,” says Mos-tert.

Hy sêhullehet ’nver-rassing of twee vir hul teenstanders.

With the rules of the day in-cluding stealing fish, exag-gerating about the size of
your catch and kissing your firstfish of the day, the second MiggieChallenge was a fun event enjoyedby all participants.TheMiggie Challenge, which washeld at Phisantekraal dam just outs-ide of Durbanville, was started in2014 as an annual competition to ce-lebrate the life and positive spirit ofStefan “Miggie” King from Brac-kenfell.Miggie was a hero in the fishingcircles. He lost the battle to CysticFibrosis in 2014 at the age of 21.This competition aims to promoteCystic Fibrosis awareness and or-gan donation.Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disor-der that affects mostly the lungs butalso the pancreas, liver, kidneysand intestine. It may be a bumpy ride for now,but roadworksalong theR27arestill underway. The project isbeing undertaken by the West-ern Cape Department of Trans-port and Public Works to resur-face the road between Milner-ton and Melkbosstrand. TheR71m project started in Apriland is scheduled for completionearly next year.Edge break repairs and thesupplementing of gravel shoul-ders will continue between theintersections of MelkbosstrandRoad and Tryall Road. The re-surfacing of the northboundcarriageway has been complet-ed on both lanes between Race-course Road and Marine Driveand the milling and backfillingof patches for base repairs havestarted on the southbound car-riageway between MarineDrive and Bay Beach Avenue.Department spokespersonByron La Hoe said resurfacingof this carriageway will startonce all base patching has beencompleted up to the RacecourseRoad intersection.“Culverts are being cleanedand broken kerbs, channels andchutes are being replaced onboth north and southbound car-
riageways between the inter-sections of Porterfield/LinkRoad and Racecourse Road.Mole barriers are being in-stalled between the intersec-tions of Sandown Road andLink Road,” said La Hoe.Heavy rains decreased visi-bility and cold temperaturescan influence the planned con-struction activities. In addition, load sheddingmay influence the batching ofasphalt at the supplier’s plant.Localised shoulder closureswill be used between the inter-sections of Tryall Road andMelkbosstrand Road. Laneswill be merged on the south-bound carriageway between ofBlaauwberg Road and MarineDrive, but both lanes will beopen to traffic during the morn-ing peak-hour from 06:00 to10:00.“Motorists are requested, forthe sake of their own safety aswell as for that of constructionworkers, to obey all traffic in-structions, including speed lim-its, and to drive carefully. Roadconditions change daily aswork progresses and motoristsshould be vigilant,” warned LaHoe.

On the coldest, wettest mor-ning the past week I noticedwhat I thought was a drunkold man in our warm waitingroom. He sat there, soakingwet, swinging from side toside, his head on his chest. Iwas annoyed and called two ofour workers to escort him outas he obviously was not aclient of ours. They gently tookhim by the arms, stepping overthe pool of urine by his feet. What happened next humbledme. These workers, earning avery small salary and beingquite poor themselves, literallytook the clothes off their ownback to replace his soakedclothing. I felt ashamed. Hewas given warm coffee and ablanket. In the end, he wastaken to the police station, ashe did not know how he got tous. In hindsight, he might havebeen ill and not drunk at all. What a humbling experience. Idrop my head in shame, buthave learnt yet another lifelesson.

Cluster housing appears to beone solution to living lessexpensively and safely intrying times. Unfortunatelyhome owners’ associations arepart of the deal. From experi-ence I have come to realisethat petty decisions made bytrustees can make life verymiserable for home owners. Many of these frustratedladies and/or gentlemen appearto derive pleasure from finding(and consequently fining theculprit) a dirt bin outside thefence after a day, cutting offthe branches of a yellow woodtree (which might be soarrogant as to be growing itsown way) and breaking upcement paving built to park a

My tale of woe comes afterdriving home on PlattekloofRoad towards Panorama hospi-tal. Late at night, after nightshift, approximately 500m beforethe hospital I heard a thudunder my car but saw nothingin the road. That was about three monthsago. Last month while drivinghome I heard the loudest bangever. I did not know what itwas and kept on driving forabout 300m before stopping andgetting out to looked around myOpel bakkie and found a hugedent in the left door. Feeling abit nervous, I carried on home. The next day driving past I sawhalf a brick in the gutter of theroad that matched what hadgashed my door.I’ve been too busy to report itto the cops, but during thefollowing weeks the pile ofrocks and glass grew next to thesame spot where I was hit so Iimagine it is the same modusoperandi of either naughty kidsor attempted hijacking shouldyou stop to see what hashappened to your car. So bewarned.

Alles is ’n ‘hurdle’ omte ‘cross’.
“Elke keer as ek iets nuuts aanpak, moetek eers kyk of ek dit kán doen.”
Dis in jou brein datdie dinge gebeur.

The number of whales caught in ropes along the South African coast has increased. PHOTO: NSRI
Cheers whenwhales are freeNICOLE MCCAIN
@nickymccain
As the winter brings an increased num-ber of whales to our waters, the chan-ces increase that the giants become
entangled in ropes, nets and lobster traps.Such cases are rising, says South African
WhaleDisentanglementNetwork (SAWDN)head Mike Meyers.
On average, 15 to 17 cases of whale entan-glement are reported every year. However, this number is increasing yearly as the pop-ulation increases, he says.
This year has seen eight cases already, with the whale season still only beginning. It is expected to peak in September.
Tenyears ago, a hugenumber of entangle-ments were reported, prompting the depart-ment of environmental affairs to approachthe lobster industry to fund training froman American whale disentanglement spe-cialist.
The department invited a range of role-players and SAWDN was born, with basictraining and a set of equipment taught ona mechanical whale tail.
The network now includes a variety ofpartners, including the Dolphin ProtectionAction Group, National Sea Rescue Insti-tute (NSRI), Natal Sharks Board, research-ers and whale watchers, Meyers says. Thishas created 17 centres along the South Afri-can coastline.
Every year, a new group is trained andmore equipment is manufactured. It costsabout R25 000 to set up a new team.
The network, which is now the fourthlargest in the world, is also affiliated to theInternational Whaling Commission andshares information and best practice tech-niques with organisations from other coun-tries.
Report itThe public should report any sighting of
an entangled whale immediately, says Mey-er. There have been reports of people beingkilled by whales in the past, he explains, which is why the general public should nev-
er attempt to free a whale themselves. The network will immediately dispatch a
boat to locate the animal and monitor it.The disentanglement team will then follow, using an appropriate knife to cut off what-ever rope or net the whale is caught in.
The network has a 100% success rate indisentangling whales trapped on the seabottom. However, whales entangled butable to break free are difficult to follow, andan entangled whale can face a very slowdeath, with it taking up to nine months forthe caught whale to die.
Dangerous workDisentangling the whale can be very dan-
gerous, Meyer explains. While humpback whales easily tire and
will stop thrashing about, southern rightwhales tend to kick their tails sideways andthis can seriously injure a volunteer.
Safety is very important and the volun-teers never enter thewater,Meyer says.On-ly the best equipment is used and all volun-teers are trained.
An entangled whale will spin around inthe water to attempt to free itself, Meyer ex-plains. This usually pushes the rope to-wards the whale’s tail, which the whale willkick. This action can be very dangerous tocrew trying to help the whale, he says.
“It’s a very scary thing the first time youassist a whale. Many volunteers go out withtheir heart in their throats,” he says.
But this is all worth it, as freeing a whaleis a very emotional experience.
“We’re all geared towards getting thatpiece of rope off. At the same time, we’revery close to a large animal, and they oftencry in fear. Sometimes they don’t even real-ised that they’re free and we need to givethem a touch before they take off like a bul-let,” he says. “At that stage, although we’vebeen as quiet as possible the whole time, theentire team will cheer.”V Report entangled whales to the Dolphin ActionProtection Group on 021 782 5845 or to the NSRIon 021 434 4011.V For more information or to get involved, contactMike Meyer on 082 578 7617.

Local filmmakers are thrilled at having wonawards at two international film ceremonies.
Local feature feature filmBorn toWin scoo-ped the Golden Crown Award for Best Evan-gelistic Feature Film at the InternationalChristian Visual Media Confe-rence (ICVM 2015) in Orlando,USA on 27 June, only threeweeks after winning the AdamAward for Best Feature Film atthe Sabaoth International FilmFestival in Milan, Italy. It alsowon the Bronze Crown Awardfor Best Feature Drama.
Frans Cronjé from Bracken-fell, who also produced the hitmovie Faith Like Potatoes, andCobus van den Berg fromEversdal, producer of theequally successfulKlein Karoo, teamed up to produce thisBornto Win which was released inAugust last year.
The film was written and directed by Cron-jé, produced by Van den Berg and wholly fil-med in George.Born to Win is based on the true story of
Leon Terblanche and poses the question,“Where is God?”
“TheCrownAwards are the biggest annualfilm awards in the international Christianfilm industry and has been in existence for60 years, while the Sabaoth Festival is a bi-annual film festival where some of the bestinternational Christian films are screened,”says Cronjé.
Cronje was in Milan and in Orlando to re-ceive the awards and said: “We produce ourfilms to have maximum personal impact and
not with the goal to win awards, but such ahuge effort and large financial investmentgoes into every film that it is great to receiverecognition for the work we do.”
Cronjé the Golden Crown Award in parti-cular helped to market the movie globally.
“We are waiting on the final paperwork, but since the announcement of the Crown
Awards a second major Holly-wood distributor has expressedinterest in theatrical release ofthe movie. I think the qualityand impact of Born to Win, com-bined with the success we stillhave with Faith like Potatoescreated this interest,” he said.Faith like Potatoes, released
in 2006, is the true story of An-gus Buchan and has been seenby over 300 million people in 17languages, and over three milli-on DVDs have been sold.
“Making a film takes a massi-ve team effort and I am proud ofthe team we had onBorn toWin,
starting with Leon and Elmarie Terblanchewho allowed us to tell their story, Cobus vanden Berg as producer and two of our key exe-cutive producers, Billy and Tanja Robertson. Our lead actor Greg Kriek played in his firstlead role and showed such maturity and bril-liance that he has been really busy on otherfilms since we filmed Born to Win in Decem-ber 2013.”
Kriek said it has been incredible to seeBorn to Win gain momentum even after it’stheatrical release.
“It’s proof that a true inspirational movieof substance remains timeless.Born to Win, which is available on DVD
will again be on the big screen in August andOctober through CrossKine.

Tablets introduced in ambulances acrossthemetro seems to bemaking emergen-cy medics a target for criminals.
Three sources in the industry, who do notwant to be identified as they are not contrac-tually permitted to speak to the media, sayrobberies and attacks have spiked over thelast few months, especially in Mitchell’sPlain,Manenberg,HanoverPark andKhaye-litsha.They believe the spike coincides with the
installation of tablet devices in ambulances, which link medics to the call centre and pro-vide directions to the emergency scene. Some medics who have been held up have
been specifically asked to hand over the “tab-lets”, sources say.The tablets, according to a source with
knowledge of the project, have been installedin a way that makes them “impossible to re-move” from the vehicles. The tablets are also locked and will only
work on the health department’s system, making them useless for any other user. The installation of the devices, referred to
as MDTs, cost about R300m, the source says.Medics have reportedly raised their con-
cerns with management and are now callingfor communities tobe informed that thedevi-ces are not removable and are unuseable out-side of the ambulance.Sources say the device, mounted above the
dashboard, is clearly visible at night. The
system also updates continuously, and canbe heard beeping from outside the vehicle. They say in some areas, medics choose
ambulances in which the device has not yetbeen installed, or switch it off. They say no education has taken place in
communities to inform the general public ofthe function of the MDT devices. The increase in attacks has left medics
fearful, one source confirms, with many al-ready expected to attend to patients in areaswhere gang violence is prevalent.“We already have the pressure of having
to respond to as many calls as possible. It’snow becoming just a job and we are losingour passion,” he says. The department of health had not supplied
comment by the time of going to print.

STEHAN SCHOEMAN
Tans is daarongeveer 60 spelers indiehele
dag tehouenonsnooi almal omtekomspeel.
Daaris nege spelers in ’n span, drie in elke blok,

FOOTBALL: BELOVED PLAYER DIES AFTER BATTLE WITH ALZHEIMER’S
Final whistle for DannySTEHAN SCHOEMAN
Danny Abrahams, remembered as oneof the best footballers in the countryduring the 1970s,will be sorelymissed.
He passed away in Ruyterwacht two weeksago at the age of 63.He had suffered fromAlzheimer’s Disease
for the past seven years and the cause of hisdeath is related to the disease. His career began in Elsies River at the lo-
cal St Augustine’s Club.It soon became apparent that he was des-
tined for greater things. As a player he will be remembered as a
genius with the ability tostamp his authority onmatches. With Cape Town Spurs he
enthralled crowds and it wasno surprise when he won theFederation Player of the YearAward in 1973.“My dad was a very loving
and humble man. I alwayshad the feeling he cared more about otherpeople than about himself,” says his son,Dean Abrahams. His long-time friend Ivan Jack, played
many games against him, also has fond
memories.“Danny had flair and a set of skills
that made it really difficult to playagainst him.“We will also fondly remember
Danny for being a great family manand friend,” says Ivan.Ivan recalls when there were seri-
ous talks of him going to play forCrystal Palace to further his career
but Danny chose to stay and help look afterhis grandma as she had fallen ill.“He decided family was more important
than stardom,” says Ivan.Danny’s friends and former players started
the Danny Abrahams Ex-Footballers Fundto help those in need. There will be a memorial service today
(Wednesday) at 19:00 at the Western CapeChristian Centre (Old Panorama Bioscope)in Elsies River. His funeral will be held on Saturday.
