THERE IS NO BETTER TIME IN HISTORY
TO HAVE FAITH IN THE FUTURE By Chuck Baker, 2011 – 2012 Utah- Idaho District Governor, Kiwanis International
Fellow Kiwanians, It is my honor to serve and represent the Utah-Idaho District as its new
Governor.
I have been involved with Kiwanis for many years and I find service to our fellow man our
greatest joy and it is service is the glue that keeps us together.
My goal is to bring Kiwanis into the 21st century.
Social networking is an amazing tool and I would ask that each member join face book and
make the Utah-Idaho district Kiwanis their friend. We can communicate so easily this way, we can
share pictures, videos, and have direct communication, at little or no cost.
Those of you with no computer access can use club meetings to communicate, as more and
more clubs have access to the internet.
The use of facebook is merely a tool to keep us closer together, not replace, human
interaction.
The better communication we have, the more and better organized our meetings and service
projects can become. Another goal that I have been working toward is working together with other
service organizations.
My wife, the First Lady Paula Baker, is working on a project with the YWCA.
The goals of the YWCA are Empowering Women, and Eliminating Racism. They operate
many shelters in Utah and Idaho for battered women and their children, and they need simple things
like clothing, underwear, coats etc., things that Kiwanis could really be of help in providing.
We need more women members ... the clubs that have a strong percentage of women are
really thriving. The YWCA project could help in recruitment to help coordinate Paulas' project.
Kiwanis international is thinking big. Eliminate, the new worldwide project, will raise 110
million to help with Unicef on the ground in 40 underdeveloped countries to provide Tetanus
vaccine for women and children to stop a very preventable disease. Patty Hansen is the regional
coordinator for this effort.
Sometimes thinking big even in a poor economy is the best medicine for success.
To carry that metaphor further, some of the world‘s greatest companies got their start in
depressions ... GE, Walt Disney and many others.
I believe there is no better time in history that to have faith in the future and recognize every
opportunity that presents itself. The world has need of our service more than ever, and this will
drive membership as we grow to meet the needs of those we serve.
My congratulations to Governor Bob Dempsey who had stunning growth in membership and
really righted the ship of Kiwanis. Thanks again to the Lt. Governors, as they really carried the
message to the clubs.
Also, thanks to those that put together a terrific conference in Pocatello. For anyone who
would like to learn about facebook or comment with ideas, please contact me a Chuck Baker,
facebook( I‘m the guy with the Eiffel tower),or [email protected], or call my cell 801-390-

A MESSAGE FROM THE FIRST LADY…
I am Paula Baker, the First Lady of the Utah-Idaho district. My husband is
Chuck Baker, the Governor of the Utah-Idaho district for 2011-2012. Chuck and I
have been married for 32 exciting years. We are the proud parents of three wonderful
children, and one very energetic two year old grandson. I am looking forward to my
role as First Lady for this upcoming year.
I would like to keep the tradition of having a First Lady project. My project is to
partner with the YWCA in helping abused women and children living in shelters.
There are a large number of women‘s shelters in the Utah-Idaho district. My role is to
coordinate the needs of each shelter with a local Kiwanis club. Each shelter has a top
ten list of needed items for everyday living.
I feel strongly about this project and I feel that this project will help to get more
women involved with Kiwanis. There are a lot of women running these shelters, and
we might encourage each shelter to send a representative to the local Kiwanis club.
This would allow the representatives to see firsthand that Kiwanis is an international
organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one
community at a time.
I would like to challenge each club to assist in this great cause. If any individual
or club would like to help with this project please e-mail me at:
Yours in Kiwanis service, Paula Baker
THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR A GREAT RIDE! By Bob Dempsay, 2010-2011 Governor
As you read this the end of September will be upon us and another Kiwanis year
will be ending. A year ago I wrote an article for the U&I Kiwanian, which listed the
goals and objectives that we had set for this year.
Through the efforts of all the clubs and the members of those clubs we have been
successful in doing what we said we could do. We have a new club in Kimberly and
have planted the seed for a club in Morgan.
Our major goal was to make our District stronger by increasing membership by
1. At the end of August the district was 62 members stronger than when we started the
year. This is a success story in itself. Without the help of so many people this would
not have happened.
Kiwanians in our district care; they care about babies with the Babycare
Cupboards in so many cities; they care for their communities and the children of these
communities by giving so generously of their time and their money.
It has been such an honor to serve as your district governor and to be a part of
this wonderful group of volunteers. Serving with you and working with you has been
one of the major highlights of my life. Arlene and I thank you for allowing us to be a
part of this Kiwanis family.
Let us continue our successes this coming year. Give Chuck the support that you
have given me. Chuck Baker is a dedicated Kiwanian and will serve the district
extremely well. He is committed to leading us into the new world of social media. This
is indeed a strong challenge that will only make our District better and more
connected. HE CARES.
God bless all of you as we continue to ‗Serve the Children of the World, One
Child at a Time‘

SPECIAL OPS KIWANIS LEADERSHIP By Jim Terry, Human & Spiritual Values
This is a little different than most of my articles for the Human and Spiritual
Value articles but I found this material to be very interesting. In an article by Larry
Broughton titled ―Special Ops Leadership Secrets Exposed‖ he indicates there are 14
practices that business leaders can deploy to create extraordinary success. I started to
wonder if our Kiwanis leadership could employ these same attributes to have
successful clubs.
Create the Best – Train and motivate for excellence. Training is an important
part for all Kiwanis leaders and members. Encourage them to go to our District
Conventions.
Dare the Impossible – Give member‘s high-impact jobs – don‘t waste your
resources. When we give our members meaningful things to do they will come
through.
Throw the Rulebook Away – Develop a tolerance for the curious and bizarre.
Let‘s think outside the box and try different things in our clubs. Sometimes we are
afraid to get away from tradition.
Be Where the Action Is – Lead from the front. Good leaders are there giving
encouragement to other members.
Commit and Require Total Commitment – Show total commitment to a project
or mission. Once a project has been decided by the club everyone needs to be
committed.
Demand Tough Discipline – Develop self-discipline by setting the example.
Build a Commando Team – Commandoes don‘t work as individuals. Encourage all
members to join the team and participate.
Inspire Others to Follow Your Vision – You must have a clean vision where
you want to go. Make your message compelling and meaningful to the members.
Accept Full Blame; Give Full Credit – Delegate authority, but not responsibility.
Take Charge! – Commandos respect and follow leaders who establish objectives early
and communicate effectively.
Reward Effectively – Rewards should be timely, fair, and tied to
accomplishments. It‘s important that we let our members know how much we
appreciate them.
Make the Most of What you Have – Focus on developing cohesion and
teamwork. Not everyone in our clubs has the same talents and skills but they all want
to participate so bring out the best in everyone.
Never Give up – Perseverance and tenacity makes all the difference. When the
going gets tough, that‘s when we need to step up and remind members of the great
work Kiwanis does.
Fight to win – Possess an eagerness to take risks and determination to overcome
obstacles. We all have challenges in our clubs but with determination we can have a
fun and successful clubs.
The one thing never to forget with all this is to make our clubs fun and exciting.
Make it a place where everyone looks forward to coming to the next meeting.

Governor Bob Dempsay presented four Resolutions:
Resolution #1 – SUPPORT OF THE UTAH-IDAHO DISTRICT FOUNDATION:
The Utah-Idaho District Foundation Board has accepted the goal to raise matching
funds for the scholarship money received from the Kiwanis International Foundation.
Because of the strong support of 100% of the clubs in the Utah-Idaho District making
contributions to the Kiwanis International Foundation, the District has received
$5,000 or $6,000 in scholarship funds during the last few years.
Therefore, be it Resolved that: The Utah-Idaho District House of Delegates
encourages the clubs to support the District Foundation by donating $6 per member or
$150 per club to the District Foundation for support of the scholarship fund.
Marvin Chamberlain moved; Bill Mullins seconded; vote was unanimous.
Resolution #2 – COMMITMENT TO STRATEGIC PLAN: A Strategic Plan for the
Utah-Idaho District was developed in 2002 in four major study sessions totaling over
260 hours with over 30 Kiwanis members participating. Under the guidance of Andy
Carey, Kiwanis International Assistant Executive Director, key issues, district
strengths, opportunities, and desires were studied. Core values and a core purpose to
improve the quality of life for those children in communities we serve were
developed.
Six major goal areas were selected: communication, membership, education,
service, finance, and Sponsored Organizations and Programs.
Strategies have been developed to achieve the goals.
Therefore, be it Resolved that: The Utah-Idaho District House of Delegates
reaffirms its commitment to the Strategic Plan as updated.
Nancy Chantry moved; Don Chantry seconded; vote was unanimous.

FOUNDATION: The Utah-Idaho District Board has accepted the goal to raise funds

UNITED AS KIWANIANS WE WILL ELIMINATE MATERNAL AND NEONATAL TETANUS
Each year, thousands of mothers and newborns are needlessly dying from maternal and neonatal tetanus. This horrifying but
easily preventable disease kills one baby every nine minutes. It targets the poorest, most underserved women and children on Earth. But
it can be eliminated.
The effects of the disease are excruciating—tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and
touch, sensitivity so severe that they cannot even be comforted by their mother‘s touch.
Maternal and neonatal tetanus is easily prevented by a series of three vaccinations to women of childbearing age, costing roughly
$1.80 US. If a woman is properly vaccinated against tetanus, she will have immunity through the majority of her childbearing years and
will pass on her protection to her future children.
Babies born to mothers who have been vaccinated will be protected through the first two months of life.
This is where Kiwanis comes in. Kiwanis will help protect the connection between mother and child and end this senseless disease.
The Eliminate Project will be the greatest endeavor the Kiwanis family has ever undertaken.

ELIMINATE MNT, EARN THANKS
It‘s going to take hard work from all of Kiwanis International to raise the US$110 million needed to save and protect millions of
mothers and babies from maternal and neonatal tetanus. And while the focus of The Eliminate Project is outward, it‘s nice to get a pat
on the back now and then.
Pledges can be made over five years and there are thank-yous for both you and your club along the way. Individual awards start at
US$300 raised, and those who give at least US$1,250 become part of the Walter Zeller Fellowship or the Diamond-level Zeller
Fellowship. Major gifts of US$25,000 and lead gifts of US$100,000 are honored with medallions, special invitations and recognition in
publications and at the Kiwanis International Office. Be sure to ask a foundation staff member how you can combine your foundation
giving with that of The Eliminate Project, so you can earn separate Kiwanis International Foundation recognition, too.
Clubs that raise US$100,000 will be named 100K clubs, and a donation of $750 per member earns Model Club status. Progressive
recognition, demonstrated with pins and banner patches, is available for incremental giving increases. The Global Service Society
includes clubs in which every member has given generously and there‘s also a 100 Percent Participation award.
Learn more about awards and requirements for each giving level, plus other special honors, at
www.TheEliminateProject.org/recognition. Then get busy earning yours today.

PREP FOR YOUR NEW ROLE WITH LEADERSHIP TRAINING
Are you a rookie in your new club or district leadership role? Know what to expect—as
well as what‘s expected of you—with online Club Leadership Education at
www.KiwanisOne.org/CLE. These self-guided tutorials are ready whenever you are and are
specific to each position: secretary/treasurer, president, membership chairman, lieutenant
governor and—new this year—board member. The new board member module includes
Roberts Rules of Order, basic board function and structure and knowledge that will be helpful
in running smooth, productive meetings. Log on as often as you need to use this information
as a resource.
Another valuable resource for new leaders is the Leadership guide (www.kiwanisone.
org/Pages/Resources/default.aspx?PageID=286), which includes a list of responsibilities,
timelines and sample forms. Download the entire guide or the appropriate section.
NEW RESOURCES TO HELP YOU SPREAD THE WORD
ABOUT THE ELIMINATE PROJECT
Maternal and neonatal tetanus affects many, many mothers and babies in the poorest
countries of the world, and it‘s going to take the help of many, many people to eliminate it
from the world. To help you reach those many people, Kiwanis is constantly creating
resources for your campaign, so keep visiting the Resources page (http://www.theeliminate
project.org/resources) of The Eliminate Project website to find out what‘s new. Here‘s
what‘s new this month:
● Turn a can into a coin collection container using the club coin can label (http://sites.kiwanis
.org/Kiwanis/en/theELIMINATEproject/newresources/handouts.aspx) Print them off and
start collecting. Every contribution counts!
● Download The Eliminate Project logos (http://sites.kiwanis.org/Kiwanis/en/the
ELIMINATE project/newresources/logos.aspx) in your preferred format: JPEG, GIF or EPS.
Be sure to follow the logo guidelines when placing the logos in your promotional materials.
● Look and sound professional as you educate groups about The Eliminate Project using
presentation resources (http://sites.kiwanis.org/Kiwanis/en/theELIMINATEproject/
newresources/presentations.aspx) including the new PowerPoint template
(http://sites.kiwanis.org/Kiwanis/Libraries/Presentations_-_MNT_-_EN/The_ Eliminate _
Project_official_PowerPoint_templates.sflb.ashx). Add photos (http://sites.kiwanis.org/
Kiwanis/en/theELIMINATEproject/newresources/Photos.aspx) and copy from the Talking
Points (http://sites.kiwanis.org/Kiwanis/Libraries/Presentations_-_MNT_-
_EN/The_Eliminate_Project_fundraising_campaign_-_Speech_Talking_Points.sflb.ashx)
and you are ready to present!

NEW KEY CLUB BEING
CHARTERED IN
SARATOGA SPRINGS
Congratulations to the Saratoga
Springs Kiwanis Club for sponsoring
a new Key Club at Westlake High
School. The Charter was approved 15
Sep 2011 with a total membership of
28 students. We expect the Kiwanis
Club will partner with the Key Club
doing service projects, fund-raisers
and just having fun together. Keep up
the good work.
SPANISH FORK CLUB
HOLDS SUCCESSFUL
FUNDRAISER
On July 22-25, the Spanish Fork Club
sold food and drinks at the concession
stands for the annual Fiesta Days
Rodeo in Spanish Fork. Our club ran
two stands and our key clubs ran one
stand. Net profits were over $l4000—
enough to run our youth programs
over the next year.

INTRODUCING THE
SERVICE PROJECT DATABASE!
If your club's looking for its next service project, check
out the Service Project Database (in English). Located at www.
KiwanisOne.org/findaproject, this online resource lets Kiwanis-
family members to browse through various projects, find ideas
and inspiration, read helpful tips, download materials to
duplicate a successful project and more.
To maximize this new tool, clubs are asked to submit their
best service project for consideration. If you have a great success
story or project idea, submit your details to
EASY ONLINE FORMS—
SEE WHAT YOU CAN CREATE WITH GOOGLE
A Google form or survey is simply one the best tools you can use on
your Kiwanis club‘s website to gather information. It‘s an easy-to-use
method to collect data and feedback from your members and other
visitors to your site, as well as compile and track participation and
responses. There are seven different form field types available and
they can be used in any combination to create a seemingly endless
amount of forms on the fly. Below are just a few examples of how
your club website could use the Google Forms tool:
Vote for service project ideas
Speaker or event evaluation
Feedback form for new Web pages
Non-members ―contact me‖ request
Poll members about meal options
Event RSVPs
Fun trivia quiz
Newsletter signup
Virtual suggestion box
Has your club created another type of form or survey? We‘d love to
hear and share your unique ways of using the Google Forms tool.
Email us your example at [email protected].
