Alcatel-lucent offers a complete Radio Access Network solution for UMTS including a range of Base
Station (BTS) products:
- Macro (12000 serie) ,
- Compact (6100 serie),
- Micro(1120 serie) and
- Pico (1010 serie).
This range of products is known by the name e-mobility Internet BTS.
For UMTS, the following rules apply to the hierarchy:
a Node B is associated with only one RNC,
a Wireless Gateway is associated with only one MSC,
a Wireless Gateway may be associated with several RNCs,
an RNC is associated with one or several Wireless Gateway (IuFLEX) ,
a Wireless Gateway may be associated with several GGSNs,
an MSC can be associated with several Wireless Gateways,
a GGSN may be associated with several Wireless Gateways.
With the future releases of the UMTS core networks, Alcatel-lucent will offer its concept of Unified
Networks, an all-packet infrastructure for telecommunication networks.

Pico Node B
The extension of the BTS portfolio provides a large range of solutions for any situation.
For Hot spot coverage (high capacity for small coverage), you can use the micro Node and its main
features which are 128 Channel Elements with a 5W power.
For indoor coverage, its very low power allows to place the pico BTS close to where people are in
building, office location.
To use the maximum power at the antenna connector when high feeder losses are expected (tower), you
can replace the standard BTS solution by the combination of a Remote Radio Head (RRH) and a digital
Node B. We will detail this configuration in the coming slides.
For the digital solution, 2 main cases are deployed. In the first case, a digital BTS is located in the
equipment user space of a dBTS 2U, meaning that it takes the space of 2 units in a standard BTS user
space such as GSM BTS. It allows to have a cost-effective deployment in existing sites. From UA5.1, the
dBTS 4U might also be used to extend the capacity in terms of channel elements. In the second case, a
digital BTS is located in a compact cabinet. The dBTS 6100 can also be used with the RRH. In UA5.1, note
that the dBTS 6100 can also be associated with a remote part called the rBTS 6100, in order to create a
macro BTS, that can be easily transported in any location thanks to the split of the macro BTS functions
into 2 compact cabinets: dBTS + rBTS.

Here is presented the Remote Radio Head (RRH) configuration that is designed for macro-cellular
applications. RRH is basically a solution where the transceiver, the Multi Carrier Power Amplifier (MCPA)
and the filter functions are located remotely from the BTS.
In this particular configuration, the main functions of the BTS Digital shelf are network interface and call
processing.
The Remote Radio Head solution for UMTS is composed of two modules. The Optical Interface Module
(C3OIM) is located inside the UMTS BTS cabinet, in the Digital shelf. The Remote Radio Head is located on
the remote site.
The main functions of the RRH are signal processing, up and down frequency conversion, transmission
amplification with the Power Amplifier (PA) and coupling with the duplexer.

The Node B supports the following basic functions:
Call processing: this includes channel setup and management for both common and dedicated
channels, cell management, power control, handover and measurement.
This function is in charge of the radio resource management inside the BTS. This function
manages the UMTS services and the internal services used for configuration and implementation
purposes.
The call processing function is also in charge of channel set-up and management for the common
and dedicated channels, cell management, power control, handover, and measurement.
Network interface: interface management with the RNC, optional interfaces for enhanced
capacity or remote network connectivity.
Uu interface (UMTS User interface): this interface is used between the BTS (Univity BTS)
and the UE (User Equipment). It is dependent on the technology used on the radio (for
example, it can be W-CDMA or TD/CDMA)
Iub interface (Interface UMTS BTS): this interface links up the Univity RNC and the Univity
BTS
Synchronization: to retrieve a highly stable radio frequency from the network interface.
Radio access and modem
This includes modulation / demodulation, frequency up / down-conversion, amplification.
Radio channel coding / decoding introduces redundancy into the source data flow, increasing its rate by
adding information calculated from the source data, in order to allow the detection or correction of
signal errors introduced by the transmission medium.
The channel coding algorithm(s) used and the amount of redundancy introduced may be different for the
different types of logical channels and different types of data.
Decoding function tries to reconstruct the source information using the redundancy added by the channel
coding function to detect or correct possible errors in the received data flow.

The Node B supports the following OA&M functions:
Operation and Maintenance (see dedicated section further on)
 Alarm management
Event reports are sent by all pieces of equipment to the OAM platform in order to constantly
inform the system about the state of the whole network. Two types of even reports must be
carefully handled by the OAM system:
Hardware anomalies automatically generate alarms which are forwarded up to the Alarm
Browser of Preside NSP.
State changes usually generate notifications which are stored in the notification log file for
investigation purposes, later on.
 Configuration and Supervision
This function is in charge of configuring and supervising the modules which ensure inventory
information, reporting and plug & play management.
 Performance monitoring
This function performs measurements on radio channels (current and surrounding cells) and
translates these measurements into radio channel quality estimates. Measurements may include:
Received signal strengths (current and surrounding cells)
Estimated bit error ratios (current and surrounding cells)
Estimation of propagation environments (high / low-speed, satellite, etc.)
Transmission range (it means through timing information)
 Doppler shift, Synchronization status, …

The RF block consists of 3 separate devices in charge of 3 specific functions:
The Multi Carrier Power Amplifier or MCPA, boots the RF signal delivered by the TRM
if there is no Tx Diversity, one MCPA is required per sector,
Tx Diversity requires one more MCPA per sector.
The Dual Duplexer Module or DDM consists of a double duplexer LNA chain
 one for the main path,
and the other for the diversity path.
The Tx Splitter is only used in case d OSTR (Omni-directional Tx, Sectorized Rx) configuration: in
this case, the Tx Splitter divides the RF input signal into 3 equal signals, thus feeding the 3
sectors of the BTS.
Note
The UMTS MCPA can be operated in 30W and 45W modes while maintaining an efficiency of over 12%.
The MCPA exists in 2 frequency variants: 1900 and 2100 MHz.

5.7 Local maintenance for the MCA
-The CCM/iCCM is not faulty and was not replaced,
-The CCM/iCCM has just been replaced,
-During the first site intervention, the MCA backup file was necessary but it was impossible to obtain it
quickly. For this second intervention the MCA backup file is stored on the PC in <default
path>\[email protected]\MCABackup folder.
The number after the IC_APPROVED prefix must be the same as the serial number of the BTS.
If the CCM/iCCM is not faulty and was not replaced, create a MCA back up file. If the coordinator has to
send you the MCA backup file and it is impossible to obtain it quickly, you should leave the site and come
back when you have the appropriate MCA backup file. If the MCA backup file is available locate the MCA
module. Disconnect the three connectors. Unplug the MCA module. Replace the new MCA module.
Replace the new MCA module. Connect the three connectors. Update the empty MCA. Close the door(s).
If the CCM/iCCM has just been replaced, before proceeding, ask the coordinator to send the most recent
MCA backup file. When you receive the file : Check the name of the file. The number after
"IC_APPROVED_" prefix must be the same as the serial number of the BTS. Save the file on your PC in
<Default path>\[email protected]\MCABackup folder. The <Default path> is the path defined when
you executed the TIL procedure. If it is not possible to receive the file quickly, you should leave the site
and come back when you have the appropriate MCA backup file. Locate the MCA modules. Disconnect the
three connectors. Unplug the MCA module. Replace the new MCA module. Connect the three connectors.
Update the empty MCA.

TILTerminal
Active iCCM Passive iCCM or filler
The TIL Terminal is connected via a TCP/IP connection to the active iCCM.
This connection is either remote (called network connection) or local (called peer-to-peer connection).
TIL Network connection:
The network connection is only applicable for an BTS in a live UMTS network.
The TIL Terminal access is via the RNC to the BTS iCCM, on the IP-over-ATM interface. The iRNC acts
as a router for the IP messages.
The TIL user has to know the public IP address of the iCCM module. This public IP address can be
fixed or dynamically assigned by a DHCP server.
Note that the TIL does not handle dynamic IP address allocation of the iCCM: i.e, if the IP address of
the iCCM changes between two TIL connections, TIL operator has to know the new IP address of the
iCCM for the subsequent connection.
TIL peer-to-peer connection:
The TIL terminal is directly connected to the iCCM module on the Ethernet debug port 10/100 BaseT.
This debug port has the same hard-coded IP address. It is factory designed and is independent of the
iCCM. Thus the TIL user always knows the IP address used to access the iCCM for a peer-to-peer
connection. An IP aliasing mechanism allows the user to define several IP addresses on this same
interface.
