The Trip on Atlantic Ocean
• 1400’s: Europeans traded with Asia—traveled there a lot– slow/dangerous travel to Asia – believed easier to cross A.O.– landed in N. Am. by accident!
• 1492: Christopher Columbus sailed west on A.O.– reached San Salvador– believed he was in Asia, but really in N. Am.
Other Explorers in NJ
• 1500s: Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazano 1st to NJ– Sailed along N coast to NY Bay
• 1600s: Henry Hudson sailed up Hudson Rv. (named after him)– 1st European to meet Lenape
New Netherland and Trade
• 1614: Dutch start colony (New Netherland)
– colony: settlement ruled by a faraway government
– included most of DE, NY, CT, PA, NJ
• Dutch eager to trade with Lenape to get furs
– Furs in high demand in Europe (demand: need for a good, or product, by people willing to pay for it)
– Dutch increased supply of fur and made lots of money selling to Europe! (supply: amount of a good that is offered for sale)
– Dutch traded coins, metal tools, cloth
Troubles Begin
• Dutch welcomed by Lenape at first– Traded– Lenape taught Dutch to make fire, clear land,
and fish
• Dutch started trouble– demanded more fur/corn– Lenape said no, so Dutch attacked– fight lasted 6 yr.
Dutch Settlements
• 1626: Dutch started building New Amsterdam– on Manhattan Island (NYC today)– center of New Netherland government
• Bought land west of Hudson Rv. (Piedmont region) from Lenape– wheat/livestock farms– slaves from Africa worked on farms
New Sweden
• 1638: Swedish people settled in SW NJ along DE Rv. (called New Sweden)– also traded with Lenape to get furs—made
Dutch mad
• 1655: New Sweden lasted for 17 yr. until Dutch took over– Most Swedish colonists stayed
• 1660: Dutch also settled in village called Bergen
The English
• England wanted control of Atlantic Coast (including New Netherland)
• King Charles II gave brother James, Duke of York, land between CT/DE rivers
• 1664: Duke of York sent 4 warships to take over New Netherlands– Dutch surrendered– “New Jersey”—name given to land between
Hudson & DE Rv.
Settlements
• Dutch life changed little under English:– same rights– kept language, religion, culture
• Dutch adopted Eng. ways, learned Eng., married into Eng. families
• Eng. encouraged others to move to NJ• Lenape migration (moved West to Canada,
Wisconsin, Oklahoma)– Eng. took over Lenape land– Brought deadly diseases to Lenape people
