Hansa Worlds
2016 Hansa Worlds, Netherlands • 115 sailors from 18 countries • Sailing in 5 divisions • With 53 Volunteers to assist • 10 sailors were using servo assist controls • Oldest competitor was 75 • All Hansa events are open to everyone, all
abilities they are inclusive
The reason for the success of our boats is they are the only craft in the world of
Universal design
What is Inclusion ?
• If inclusion is the goal, then obviously you have to use equipment which everyone can use.
• Which means equipment with elements of Universal Design must be used.
• So what is Universal design ?
Universal Design • Creates design that works
beautifully and seamlessly • For as many people as
possible • Considering the breadth of
human diversity • Through peoples’ entire lives.
I cant walk so I use a wheelchair, but it doesn’t mean I’m disabled
• Some are born with a disability • Many acquire disability along the way • Broken legs are a temporarily disability • Pregnant women & mothers with prams are
somewhat disabled • Disability is a natural aspect of the human
condition, not an oddity
Universal Design presumes that:
• Varying ability is a common characteristic of everyone as they progress through their life.
• If a design works for people with disabilities it works better for everyone else.
• If it works well it can also look good.
Handicap isn’t necessarily a disability
It is architects and builders who create the handicap
Consider this adage
God created the disability, But the handicap is man made
What is Inclusive Design • Inclusive Design differs from UD as it talks
more about our diversity
• We are all individuals, we are all different
• Some with extreme difference
• There is no norm
• It’s normal to be different
Inclusive Design suggests • The concept of disability has polarised the
conversation to “able bodied v/s disabled”.
• A shift to understanding population diversity lets us focus more on our variation of ability.
• Which is influenced by different lifestyles, aspirations, gender, education, and past experience.
• Ability variation then translates to degrees of difficulty to use certain products and services.

If inclusion is the goal, then you have to use equipment which everyone can use
Which means equipment of Universal and Inclusive Design must be used, if you want to
talk inclusion.
Therefore Inclusion and Inclusive Design are the 2 sides of the same coin
• You cannot have the one without the other
• And that is why Hansa sailboats are the worlds leaders in inclusive sailing, open to everyone, regardless of age, ability or other difference.
