There are a few things to keep track of and it is ultimately the student’s responsibility to make sure that she or he is following the program properly.

---BUT---

Vous n’êtes pas seuls.

Nous sommes là pour vous aider.

The other sections concern specific topics for specific programs as well as the forms that you will eventually have to fill out.

There is a big difference between undergraduate & graduate studies--- (MINDSET)

----------------INDEPENDENCE--------------

Undergraduate:--Attend classes from September-April--May-August – SUMMER BREAK

Graduate:--Attend classes from September-April--May-August – RESEARCH SEASON

Page 24: UNIVERSITÉ SAINT-PAUL SAINT PAUL UNIVERSITY. FACULTÉ DE PHILOSOPHIE FACULTY OF PHILOSOPHY.

FACULTÉ DE PHILOSOPHIE FACULTY OF PHILOSOPHY.

KEEP IN MIND THAT WHEN YOUARE ENROLLED…

…your supervisor is available throughout the year for consultation.

However, a professor’s duties vary throughout the year.

Page 26: UNIVERSITÉ SAINT-PAUL SAINT PAUL UNIVERSITY. FACULTÉ DE PHILOSOPHIE FACULTY OF PHILOSOPHY.

Professorial Life – in general--

SEPTEMBER-APRIL--Teaching--Administrative duties--Research/writing

MAY-AUGUST--Conferences/travel--Research/writing—RESEARCH SEASON--Course preparation--Holidays

Page 27: UNIVERSITÉ SAINT-PAUL SAINT PAUL UNIVERSITY. FACULTÉ DE PHILOSOPHIE FACULTY OF PHILOSOPHY.

A Little Friendly Advice:

---Take advantage of the “summer session,” but, think of it as the RESEARCH SEASON.

---Work out a meeting schedule with your supervisor.

---Budget your time--set up a timeline.

Let us consider two examples of a timeline.First—Thesis Route and Second—Research Paper

Page 28: UNIVERSITÉ SAINT-PAUL SAINT PAUL UNIVERSITY. FACULTÉ DE PHILOSOPHIE FACULTY OF PHILOSOPHY.

Fall 2008—Spring 2009: Coursework, formulate ideas, talkto your supervisor and construct your approach to the Research Paper

Page 30: UNIVERSITÉ SAINT-PAUL SAINT PAUL UNIVERSITY. FACULTÉ DE PHILOSOPHIE FACULTY OF PHILOSOPHY.

Consider that when completed,a Thesis or Research Paperis placed in the SPU Library.

It becomes part of theongoing scholarly tradition.

SO, WE HAVE ANOTHER DIFFERENCE BETWEENGRADUATE AND UNDERGRADUATE WORK.

IT BECOMES A PUBLICALLY AVAILABLE DOCUMENT;FUTURE RESEARCHERS WILL LIKELY CONSULT IT.

Graduate Student Life

Twofold

Quiet Scholarly Side---concentrating on your coursework---reading and thinking in the library---hunching over a computer thinking and writing---meeting with your supervisor

Graduate Student Lifealso has a PUBLIC SIDE

A graduate student greatly benefitsby participating in the ‘life of the faculty.’

If nobody participates, then no ‘life of the faculty.’

5 Ways to Participate (at least…)

(Another difference between grads and undergrads.)
