Coastal & Marine Resources Centre
Biosphere Reserves
Biosphere Reserves for the island of Ireland, which are areas of terrestrial and coastal ecosystems
promoting solutions to reconcile the conservation of biodiversity with its sustainable use, and are
part of a global network. They are not covered by an international convention but must meet
specific criteria.
Blue Flag Marinas
Location and other relevant information for the blue flag marinas in the Republic of Ireland.
Celtic Sea Cod Spawning Box The dataset displays the location of the Celtic Sea Cod Spawning Box where fishing is restricted from
01/02/2009 to 31/03/2009 by Council Regulation (EC) No 43/2009 of 16 January 2009 to protect
juvenile cod breeding grounds.
Commercial Ports
This file shows the location of commercial ports around the Republic of Ireland. It also includes
specific data pertaining to the volume of traffic over the period 1999 to 2011, as well as the tonnage
of goods handled between 2000 and 2011. Additional information on contact details is also
provided.
Diving Clubs
This dataset shows the location of diving clubs in Ireland, providing additional information such as
the address for each club and the diving club webpage address.
Edible Periwinkle Populations This dataset provides information on the accessibility and physical characteristics of the survey
points at which a study was carried out on the distribution, abundance and the characteristics of the
edible periwinkle, Littorina littorea, on Irish shores. It also gives information on the number of
periwinkles surveyed at each location.
Energy Power Plants
This dataset shows the situation of the Energy power plants all around Ireland and their storage
capacity.
Fishing Ports
This feature shows the location of fishing ports in the Republic of Ireland. Additional information on
each port is also provided.
Fishing Spots
This feature shows the location of recreational sea fishing spots around Ireland’s coast. The dataset
is based on a series of Sea fishing maps developed in the 1980’s by the Promotion and Marketing
unit of the Central Fisheries Board (CFB), which continue to be a valuable resource to recreational
sea anglers.
13
Irish Conservation Box This feature shows the location of the Irish Conservation Box (ICB) established by the EU. This
conservation area, which replaces the Irish Box, recognises the biological sensitivity and commercial
importance of the waters around Ireland.
ISA Sailing Clubs
The dataset contains the location and other relevant information of Irish Sailing Association (ISA)
sailing clubs. The ISA Sailing clubs organise races, courses and other activities for their club members
and the general public.
ISA Surf Clubs
Clubs which are members of the Irish Surfing Association, an all island body, are shown. The clubs
promote surfing as a sport and provide access to material, information and training lessons. This
information is correct as of 28th May 2012.
Marinas Pontoons
This dataset shows the location and other relevant information of the marinas and pontoons in
Ireland.
Marine Data Buoys
Marine Data Buoys around the island of Ireland, developed to improve weather forecasting and
safety at sea. Some of the buoys are part of the Irish Marine Data Buoy Network, which is a
collaboration of the Marine Institute, Met Eireann, the UK Met Office, and the Irish Department of
Transport. Other buoys are part of the UK's Marine Automatic Weather Stations (MAWS) network.
Official Visitor Mooring Sites
The dataset displays the location and other relevant information about visitor moorings in Ireland.
Rockall Haddock Box
The dataset displays the location of the Rockall Haddock Box where all fishing with longlines is
prohibited by Council Regulation (EC) No 43/2009 of 16 January 2009 to protect the juvenile
haddock breeding grounds.
Surf Spots This layer shows the location of good surfing spots and gives information on coastal type, direction
and the difficulty of the waves. This does not intend to be an exhaustive list of all possible surfing
spots. It has been collated from a number of surfing web sites.
Tide Gauges The dataset contains the location and other relevant information about all known temporary and
permanent tide gauges. It includes the five gauges which are part of the Irish Tide Gauge Network.
Wind Surfing Schools
Schools or watersports centres which promote windsurfing as a sport are shown. These schools offer
training courses for a variety of skill levels in windsurfing, often alongside training in other
watersports or outdoor adventure activities. Many of these windsurfing schools are recognised by
14
the Irish Windsurfing Association (IWA) in the Republic of Ireland or by the Royal Yachting
Association (RYA) in Northern Ireland.

EPA Corine Land Cover
Corine Land Cover 1990
The CLC1990 (Ireland) database was the first complete land cover database produced for the Ireland.
The development of this database was based on the visual interpretation of satellite imagery (for
1989 and 1990) and the allocation of land cover types to one of 35 standard land cover classes. A
number of these land cover classes were further subdivided to address particular national needs and
conditions.
Corine Land Cover 2000
The CLC2000 database was created by first assessing and correcting the existing CLC1990 land cover
database and images for geometric and thematic content, then land cover changes were mapped
using 2000 satellite imagery and ancillary data. The 2000 CORINE update was managed by the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Ireland. ERA-Maptec was contracted by the EPA to
undertake the technical aspects of the update.
Corine Land Cover 2006
The CLC2006 project is part of the GMES Fast Track Service Precursor (FTSP) Land Monitoring. In
CLC2006 38 countries with a total area of 5.8 Mkm² are participating (32 EEA member states and 6
collaborating countries). In Ireland the project is financed by the Environmental Agency (EPA) with

Global 200 ecoregions are a collection of the Earth's most outstanding and diverse terrestrial,
freshwater, and marine habitats where the Earth's biological wealth is most distinctive and rich,
where its loss will be most severely felt, and we must protect if we are to preserve the web of life.
