3 Habitat for Humanity® Prince George Society
May 17, 2011
Mayor & City Council City of Prince George, BC.
RECEIVED MAY ; 7 2011
CITY MANAGER'S OfFICE CITY OF PRINCE GEORGE
Habitat for Humanity Prince George Society is a group of concerned citizens that are dedicated to wiping out poverty housing in Prince George. Our emphasis is to help our vulnerable workers who will not have the opportunity to purchase decent or appropriate housing.
We have had the opportunity to help five families so far. We are starting our sixth project at 1905 Kenwood St.,
Habitat is seeking the City of Prince George's partnership in the endeavour to provide quality affordable housing. The cost of what we are seeking in this partnership is minimal for the City to provide.
Habitat is asking for the waving of all fees and charges associated with this project and future builds that we undertake. So far, our permits and other costs for this build total $3,726.22. If this is not possible then we propose another solution which is to give Habitat grants that equal the cost of permits, (records indicate that our last build incurred a cost to Habitat of $1,330.68 in permits). Either solution enables us to partner together in the battle to break the cycle of poverty that exists in our affluent City.
We are also seeking to have the first year of city utilities/taxes waved from each new Habitat home to ease the cost of new home ownership on the partner family from their current accommodation to the their new Habitat home.
Why should the city waive any of these costs or give Habitat any grants?
Habitat helps to increase the tax basin in Prince George in a way that would not otherwise happen. Habitat does not make any profit from the vulnerable people that we seek to help, which keeps finances in Prince George for the families use in our economy. Furthermore Habitat is unlike any other social housing venture that exists anywhere in the world. Habitat sells the homes built by volunteers at no profit, using a no interest loan, to our vulnerable neighbours.
The Habitat mission is fully in line with Council' s Vision; from the City' s website:
The Corporate Plan is intended to reflect the principles and direction set by City Council through the adoption of the City's "Mission", last reviewed in January 2000.
One can conclude from reading City Council's Mission that the purpose of the City of Prince George is to be:
A results oriented, customer sensitive service agency that promotes the economic and personal well being of the City's residents.
It follows that:
The City is ultimately driven by the needs of the community. Those needs are the reason the City exists, and there is no other reason.
http://www.city.pg.bc.ca/pages/corpplan/
Habitat for Humanity would like to thank you for your consideration. We look forward to a long, vibrant and fruitful partnership in helping those who are struggling to help themselves.
If a decision cannot be made on this, could you arrange for us to go before council?
Sin~ 0
