V Ventura Lambrate ZONA VENTURA LAMBRATE
Via privata Massimiano, Via privata G. Ventura, Via C. Arrighi ZONA 3 10am-8pmOpening night Wed 13th 7pm free
Already a year ago, even before the festival started, you could feel which way the wind was blowing. And a visit to this area, right in the middle of the Design Week, confirmed the impression: what you really shouldnt miss is along the banks of river Lambro. There are suitable facilities - the ones that should have turned Ventura Area into Milans art district - the offer is more than adequate - by the way, if you are not product purists, dont miss Minini and Plusdesigns straying into art - and, above all, the visitors approach is radically different. Not greedy, not loud, more relaxed and careful. Are you planning to spend just one night in Milan? Then spend it here. Marco Valsecchi

Giappone attraverso i tre re magi Fujimoto, Hirata e Ishigami.
Design is dead, long live design! There was a time when everything was easier, you could see design, understand it and then recognise it. That time seems to be dead, or better said, its zeitgeist seems to be dead. Todays design - with its communication anxiety - experiments with expressive grafting, long live design! The body is dead, but the spirit lives on adopting new shapes. A project becomes an object, then communication and finally its own story, fuelled by its own existence. This trend - what a nasty word - seems to be prevailing. Maris Mezulis tells a video story of Japan seen through the eyes of the three kings, Fujimoto, Hirata and Ishigami: through all these experiences, more is less and no deed is ever neutral or meaningless. Domenico Di Maria
C
Cruciale20 croci di Giulio Iacchetti MUSEO DIOCESANO Corso di Porta Ticinese, 95 ZONA 1 10am-6pmOpening Thu 14th 6:30pm free 0289420019
y Verticalit, cosmo, direzioni dello e nello spazio, centro universale.
Verticality, cosmos, directions of and in space, universal centre. This and a lot more is crystallised into a cross, the simplest and, at the same time, most powerful sign of our imagery (youll find everything inside it, from the wind star to Christs theophany, from mathematic symbolism to the supreme reminder). Far from debasing it into a fashionable outfit, Giulio Iacchetti researches the cross, explains its sensual conglomerate and its day-to-day dimension: he does it through twenty pieces, ready-made ones, artist reinterpretations, wood, steel, emptiness and mattresses. They dont lack provocation, of course. And it explodes in the dialogue with the permanent exhibition of Museo Diocesano. Because, all in all, if we want to use Mendinis words and his objects for spiritual use, they are useful for mankind to think about itself. Thats why this is a Crucial reflection. Emilio Cozzi

Proviamo a conoscerlo meglio.

Tekst: Evelien Baks Fotos: Jaap Scheren, Freudenthal/Verhagen, e.a.
Ventura Lambrate n andere locaties vande Design Week in Milaan is gereserveerdvoor Nederlandse ontwerpers.

Marcel Wanders, Rotterdams

Enkele
splinternieuwe stoelen uit de Woodcollection.
De Salone Internationale delMobile en de Milan Design

And the Great Furniture Festival Begins By ALICE RAWSTHORN
Published: April 10, 2011
LONDON There was a snarling dinosaur on the invitation. Long lines of people waited outside on the street. What happened inside has been so hyperbolized that, like the Sex Pistols first gig, more people claim to have been there than could possibly have squeezed into the building.
All of the hullabaloo was for the opening of the first exhibition of the Memphis design group, and the hottest ticket of the 1981 Milan Furniture Fair. Photographs of Memphiss joyously kitsch, postmodernist furniture splashed across newspapers and magazines worldwide, along with a team portrait of its founder, the Italian design grandee Ettore Sottsass, posing with his young collaborators in a colorful boxing ring.
By repackaging postmodernist theory in a fun, seductive form that millions understood, Memphis won a place in the design history books. And by introducing designers to the media, and vice versa, it heralded an era in which design has fixated on whatever comes next next new name, next style, next headline, next Twitter trend. Its legacy has dominated the Milan fair ever since, and will be as strong as ever when the design world descends for the 2011 fair, which runs from Tuesday through Sunday in the 30th anniversary year of Memphiss impossibly overcrowded debut.
Next-obsessed though post-Memphis design may be, theres bound to be a spot of nostalgia this week as people reminisce about the chaos at last years fair, when the eruption of that unpronounceable Icelandic volcano grounded flights across Europe. An inconveniently timed French rail strike made matters worse, and hundreds of thousands of people found themselves stranded in Milan during the busiest week of the citys year. (For the record, the worst How I got home story Ive heard was of the luckless Swedish magazine editor who spent over 60 hours traveling to Stockholm in a bus filled with drunken kitchen appliance salesmen.)
Fingers (firmly) crossed, but it is difficult to imagine how this years fair could end quite so dramatically. And once the volcanic anecdotes have subsided, the conversation will return to whats next. The usual topics are the next hot designer or next big thing, but this years will include the prickly question of whether the furniture industry worldwide has finally hauled itself out of recession.
The furniture business has had a rough ride in recent years. A slowdown in its established markets, volatile prices for raw material and ever-fiercer competition from Asia have posed serious problems for the European manufacturers who dominate in Milan. There are some mitigating factors. Many of the largest companies, including Alessi, Flos, Kartell, Magis and Vitra, are privately owned,

The standard was high once again this year, with designers and design students coming from all corners of the globeto show. Highlights came in the form of woodwork in light birch from Atelier Takagi, wicker lamps and hybrid basketsfrom Cordula Kehrer and The Andes House respectively, and plywood storage cylinders coated in neon on theinside, from Studio JuJu.

Milan: TechnologyStylus Vision team present their round-up of technology trends from Milan Design Week and highlight keybrands and designers.
Extending LightNew lighting concepts were everywhere this year at Milan from both independent designers and commercial lightingcompanies, all seeking to combine maximum energy efficiency with style.
From small and intimate to large-scale, designers explored the reach of natural and ambient lighting, considered theapplication of new materials with LEDs and OLEDs, and devised solutions to be more resourceful with public lighting.
Using natural light rhythms at a starting point, two designers from the Design Academy Eindhoven presented sensitivelighting concepts that observe our relationship with varying levels of daylight. LivingLight by Feija Klinkhameremulates all stages of natural light and mimics the suns colour temperature to affect our energy levels; lighter andenergetic in the morning, warmer, darker and calmer later on.
Philip Bogaerts Day & Night lamps use LEDs, conserving energy by responding to the actual light levels in theenvironment during the day. The Night lamp, set on a timer, similarly ensures the lamp follows the cycle of the moon its brightest during full moon.
The harvesting of free and abundant natural light to store and reuse represents a strong environmental solution for thefuture. 3Ms Infinite Innovation installation at the Triennale showed sustainable light technologies integrated forarchitecture. Their 3M Sunlight Delivery System tracks, captures and transports the suns natural light into the interior

Milan: MaterialsBroken down into fours sections, Stylus highlights some of the key materials based trends from aroundMilan Design week. For sustainable materials looking back at centuries old techniques and naturalresources, which have fallen out of vogue, are proving to be the catalyst for product material innovations. Along a similar line, upcycling remains strong with the past life of the material often visible and celebrated.
Protection, group interaction and essential construction and design skills were address by several designerin the form of large-scale kits. And more of a resource than a materials trend - the origins of our watersupplies were symbolically celebrated by several designers in the form of carafes.

The aim was to explore the potential ofnatural polymers extracted from plants and animal-derivatives.
