February, 2018
Brothers and Sisters,
Happy Valentine’s Day!
February is here and there is so much happening this month! First off, the C of A will be
February 2-4. I hope everyone is planning to attend. It is going to be a great weekend. Get ready
for program Jeopardy! Let’s see which area knows the most about our programs. Also please
plan to attend BINGO on Friday night if you are coming to the C of A. Also, if you have
anything you would like to donate for gifts, please contact Barbara Hertline or Nancey Earney.
They have graciously agreed to take over Bingo for the rest of the year. Saturday will be our
VOD and Patriot Pen Banquet and it is always a pleasure to hear what our entrants have written.
We have some wonderful young people coming up. I look forward to the evening.
A few days later I will be heading out to Nashville, Tennessee for the Auxiliary’s Mid-Year
Conference. I am really looking forward to going and I will be sure to tell you about anything I
learn while attending. I hope to see you there.
Once back from that, Valentine’s day will be right around the corner. This is a great opportunity
to get some local school children or boy or girl scout troops to sign some valentines to give to
our veterans at the local VA Hospitals and in area nursing homes.
In closing, I would like to stress the importance of working together to achieve our goals. I hope
we can all try to work together to accomplish our most important goal, that of serving our
veterans. We may be different, and have different opinions, but if we keep our eyes on our goals,
together we can do anything!!!

The Chaplain's Corner
Hello, Auxiliary members, I bring you greetings, in the month of "LOVE". I like referring to February as the
month of love mainly because of Valentine Day, because it's usually the time we express our love to our
loved ones. To go a bit further, I'm encouraging you to love and show to each other continuing, don't let it
stop on the 15th. Don't let your love be about the three words "I love you", but about how you treat the one
you say you love, the way you respond to that person. You don't have to be in a person's face all the time.
Sometimes something as simple as sending a card to let them know that you are thinking about them, calling
them on the phone, giving them, a cough drop if they are coughing.
Love should never be taken for granted but shared with respect and appreciation.
By the way, "Google", says that love is in the Bible 310 times, 131 times in the Old Testament and 179 times
in the New, that's in the King James version. My favorite scripture: 1 Corinthians 13:13 - "And now abideth
faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love".
Praying for all sick and shut-in members and their family members.

HINTS AND SUGGESTIONS TO BE A SUCCESSFUL
AUXILIARY and MEMBER
(This was shared by a member from another Department on the National VFW Friends of the Auxiliary page,
who shared it from somewhere else. Sharing information with each other is the best thing we can do.)
February 2018
When completing a member transfer application, there are several items that Treasurers and the transferring
member need to make sure are properly filled out before sending the transfer form to the Department
Treasurer. First, be sure to use the most recent form provided by National which was updated in December of
2017. This form, which is also the membership application form, is available on the Department & National
websites. Next, make sure the form is completely filled out. This includes providing the name, and dates and
location of service. This must be completed even if the transfer is under a member of the VFW of the Post to
which you are transferring. And don’t forget that VFW member’s membership number. And, as of December,
all transfers, including life transfers, must provide a copy of the proof of eligibility of the Veteran they are
joining/transferring under, unless that Veteran is a member of the VFW. Then you must be sure to provide
that membership number in addition to the dates and location of service.
Always remember, if you ever tell someone something cannot be done or must be done because it is in the
Bylaws, that you can show that person where it is IN the Bylaws. Make sure you can back up what you are
saying by showing the proof. Never speak about anything that you are not absolutely positive of. This creates
unnecessary confusion and doubt in the members.

Solicitation of Funds
The question has come up on whether or not Districts or States may require funds from its members. The VFW
Auxiliary Bylaws states that only dues are required to be paid. Other fees cannot be ‘required’ only ‘requested’ of
members. Note that the contributions to our State funds (Hospital fund, Scholarship funds, National Home, etc.) are
listed as requested or suggested, but not required.
Note that even if funds are requested, such solicitation is by vote of the Auxiliary. Refer to VFW Auxiliary Bylaws,
Section 915 which states “Solicitation of Funds, Auxiliaries, County Council, Districts or Departments shall not solicit
funds or donations except by prior vote.”
The VFW Manual of Procedures, section 414 is consistent with this Auxiliary rule. It states: “Districts may solicit
funds or contributions or otherwise engage in fund-raising activities and projects only by prior vote of the District
agreeing to such solicitations, activities or projects.” And Section 515 makes a similar statement regarding
Department solicitation of funds.
Note that attending a District, State, Conference or National meeting only requires a current membership card to attend
or participate in the meeting. Auxiliaries may request a registration fee, only when a registration package, or some
other item, such as a meal, or something else, is provided for that fee. But if an attendee does not accept the item, no
registration fee would be required.
Official Ruling from National on Life Member Transfers
December 13, 2013 then National President Armithea "Sissy" Borel issued an Official Ruling, which reads, "A Life
Member Transfer does not have to provide proof of eligibility to accompany her Annual or Life Member Change form
and duplicate accepted application." Various questions have been raised regarding the Ruling, and the matter has been
reviewed by the National Line Officers and Advisory Committee.
After completing the review, the National Line Officers and Advisory Committee recommends the Ruling be declared
null and void, as it does not comply with the Bylaws. The review considered that all members of the VFW Auxiliary
have equal rights, and every member should be held to the same requirements. Bylaws Section 106B (formerly Section
113A under which the 2013 Official Ruling was made). Life Membership Transfer, provides, "A member may be
accepted as an Auxiliary Life Member Transfer in the same manner prescribed for an Auxiliary member transfer."
Bylaws Section 106A, Annual Transfer, provides, in part,
Any member in good standing may transfer to any Auxiliary or to or from Member At Large
• Upon presentation of a completed and executed application. (See page 1 Booklet of Instruction)
• Upon acceptance by the Auxiliary of their choice,
• Upon presentation of their current membership card
Then, it should follow that a Life Member Transfer would also present a completed and executed application (with
proof of eligibility.
Based upon my review, I believe the National Line Officers and Advisory Committee reached the correct conclusion.
Therefore, I hereby order that the Official Ruling of December 13, 2013 on Life Member Transfers null and void.
National Bylaws Sections 106A and 106B shall be adhered to as currently written, and the Treasurer's Guide shall be
updated according to this Ruling.
Dated: November 30, 2017
BY ORDER OF”
Dee Guillory
National President
Comment from Jeanne Gilbert, Dept. Treasurer:
I don't make the rules. I have to go by the Bylaws.
When a life member is transferring to another Auxiliary and the person she is transferring under is a member of the
VFW Post affiliated with the Auxiliary to which she is applying, she does not have to show Proof but she does have to
present a Completed and Executed Application.
This Official Ruling is very easy to understand. Please check the Bylaws.

you to make arrangements to have one.
Our VA Medical Centers sponsor meetings, along with other activities for the caregiver and
their veteran. They have found presenting the caregiver with a goody bag, gift card, or a
useful gift will brighten their day, and changes their morale instantly. An up-lift will give
them an incentive to be stronger caring for their veteran.

February 2018
Happy Valentine’s Day Auxiliary members! On February 14th my heart will be red,
white, and blue! Wondering what to do for the country you love? Fly your flag!
Let all who pass by your house know that you love America. Looking for a good
project for your Auxiliary? How about canvassing the neighborhood where your
Post is located to see if any of the businesses need a replacement flag. Maybe they are so patriotic
they fly the flag over their business every day and it has become a bit tattered. You could replace it
and present them with a certificate of appreciation for being a patriotic neighbor. Show the
neighborhood that your Auxiliary notices and appreciates their acts of patriotism. You can also check
out the patriotic items available at the VFW National Store. What teacher wouldn’t like to have free
material to give to their students? Check out the Children’s Educational Coloring/Activity Books.
One says “I Love America” and others are appropriate for different program promotions. Take a look
. . . they have pencils, rulers, Pledge of Allegiance cards, and much more. I’m sure you will find
something you can use to promote Americanism. While you’re shopping, don’t forget to order
citations.
OH! And don’t forget that February 19th is President’s Day. It may or may not be a day off from
work for you, but take a minute to set aside all political differences and pay tribute
to those who have served as the leader of our great country for 229 years. No,
there is not a problem with my math. Although America declared independence
from Great Britain in 1776, George Washington was not elected to the office of
President of the United States until 1789. Remember, Great Britain didn’t just
say, OK, you guys can go your own way. People fought and died for
independence. We, the members of the VFW Auxiliary, are honored to represent those who are
willing to fight and die for the freedoms we enjoy today. We know and understand (probably more
than most other citizens) the price of our way of life. Be proud to be an American, and be proud to
be a VFW Auxiliary member!
Don’t forget to check out the VFW National Store online at www.VFWstore.org to see more
Americanism items available for purchase.

Happy Valentine’s Day! We can catch the dream for our Veterans. What can do we do for our
Veterans? National Salute to Veterans Week is this month, Feb. 11-17. This is our opportunity
to visit and connect with our Veterans in hospitals and other medical facilities to show them how
much they are loved and appreciated. Visits, parties, Valentine cards, etc., are always welcome.
First contact the Voluntary Service Director/Facility Director to learn their needs, what plans
they have and how you can help as a volunteer.
Get involved with the Veterans Voices Writing Project (VVWP), a therapeutic writing program
that helps Veterans express themselves and communicate in a creative way. Help a veteran to
put his/her thoughts in writing. There are three ways Auxiliaries may help with the VVWP:
(1) Subscribe to the “Veterans Voices” Magazine, published three times a year. Veterans
may submit their work for publication in the magazine;
(2) Donate to help with costs; and
(3) Volunteer.
To learn about VVWP and how to volunteer, visit veteransvoices.org, call 816-701-6844, or
email [email protected].
• The Outstanding Hospital Volunteer of the Year application is due to me at the above
address by March 1. Please contact me with any questions concerning this.
• REPORT your Hospital volunteer work, donations and contributions by the April 15
deadline. Click on Program Reporting at www.vfwauxnc.org. Please ask someone for
help if you have a problem reporting.

February, 2018
Hello Auxiliary Members. It is that time again to send out a request to all of you to help our
hospitalized Veterans "Catch the Dream".
I know a lot of you are helping out at the Durham VA Medical Center with your time and donations.
If you would like to send me a note or email when you do your reporting telling me how your
Auxiliary has helped out, that would be great.
I hope to have some information and handouts on our program table at the C of A. Please stop by,
chat with the representatives and pick up some of the information that I hope will be helpful.
Remember that the week of February 11 - 18, 2018 will be National Salute to Veteran Patient week.
If your group would like to do an activity at the Durham VA or make a donation of some of the
needs, please call Volunteer Services at (919)286-0411 ext. 7810 or Recreation Therapy at ext. 7708
or 7719.
Most items on previous need lists are on-going but there has been a few new requests.
• Sneakers for men size 10-13(preferably with Velcro) to wear in physical therapy
• Men's briefs or boxer briefs sizes med & large
• Donations to the General Fund (sent to the Dept. Treasurer and earmarked as to the use of the
donation)
• Puzzle books - this is not a new request but an ongoing one that was sent to me again
At our January VAVS meeting here are some items that were mentioned:
• On May 5, 2018, a 5K run rill be held at the Durham VA. this is coordinated by the American
Legion & Knights of Columbus. Benefits will go towards helping pay expenses to send
Veterans to Winter Sports Games, Wheelchair Games, Golden Age Games, Summer Sports
Clinic and Creative Arts Festival. These games are open to all Veterans. More sponsors are
needed, so if your Post or Auxiliary would like to donate, or have more info on this fund-
raiser, please see the application on our State Auxiliary website or contact Kendra Monden at
(919) 286-0411 ext, 6591, email to [email protected].
• On February 11-14, 2018 there will be a Barnes & Noble Fundraiser from 10:00 am-6:00 pm at
the store in New Hope Commons on 15-501 in Durham, or you can shop online If you
purchase from there or on line, use the code 12282323 to give credit to the VA. This will help
them receive a percentage for the sales.
I want to thank all of you again for the help and pleasure you give to our Veterans. Please keep up
the good work and always remember that it takes very little to put a smile on the face of our Veterans.

CHIEF OF STAFF/EXTENSION- FEBRUARY 2018
Fran Redfield - 2017-2018 NC Department Chairman
250 S. Crow Creek Drive, #4, Calabash NC 28467
910-287-7527 - [email protected]
Our National Chief of Staff/Extension Ambassador provided some food for thought that I wanted
to share with you—please take a few minutes and ask yourself—did you improve your own
personal member experience and make your Auxiliary better in 2018?? Can you answer “yes” to
these questions?
1. Did I attend my Auxiliary meetings?
2. Did I participate in any of my Auxiliary sponsored activities?
3. Did I volunteer to chair an event or be a committee member?
4. Did I seek out opportunities to enhance my knowledge and skills offered through the
Auxiliary?
5. Have I acted as a mentor?
6. Did I support community efforts through volunteerism?
7. Was I recognized or did I recognize a member by saying “good job” and/or “thank you”?
8. Did I sign up one new member?
9. Did I make a difference in the life of a veteran, military family member, a child or an
elder?
Here’s some ideas to make your membership experience and Auxiliary better:
1. Use the materials available within national’s website and sign up for MALTA.
2. Help your Auxiliary establish their own mentoring program and offer to be a mentor.
3. Become more familiar with the latest edition of our Bylaws and Booklet of
Instructions/Rituals.
4. Attend a District or Department meeting, learn what’s going on across your state.
5. Seek out a new way to educate youth in patriotism and our scholarship opportunities
available through the VFW/Auxiliary.
6. Find new ways—OR BE OPEN MINDED TOWARD OTHER SUGGESTIONS-- to
support/assist the VFW in the common goal of serving veterans, their families and our
communities.
7. Assure as positive attitude and open mind will be carried with you when engaged in
Auxiliary meetings and activities.
8. BE KIND AND HELPFUL TO EVERYONE.
9. Remember Auxiliary Officers at all levels of this organizati0on—you are first and
foremost members and as officers of this great Department have a responsibility to our
members to be role models/mentors.
The one thing in our organization that will never change is that we support each other in all that
we do with one ultimate goal—the health and welfare of our veterans, our military personnel and
their families. President Ivy, myself, all the other line officers are here to help you.

Youth Activities
February is a fun time for our youth. Here are a couple of ideas you can do this month!
Show our Veterans love this month!
Schedule a visit to your local VA or nursing home
Be SURE to include your youth
Give veterans Valentine’s cards signed by your youth
Have your youth color pictures for veterans
Host a Valentine’s Day Party for your youth!
Have the kiddos sign simple Valentine’s cards (think what we did when we were in grade school)
 Have them color Valentine’s pictures
Do a short video on your cell phone. Maybe a skit, or well-wishes for the veterans
Take the cards, colored pages & maybe some Valentine’s Day treats to the VA or a local nursing
home and while you’re there, show the veterans the video the kiddos did. I’m sure it will bring
big smiles to their faces!
If you have any new or creative ideas, please pass them along!

Happy Valentine’ Day
Roses are red, violets are blue
I just want to say how proud I am of you!
I’m happy and thrilled to let you know,
Quarter Two goal got us some dough!
Together we stand
To help the veterans of our great land.
We band together getting members as we go.
Sharing with them the programs that we know.
So continue to work- it starts with just one!
But remember our membership work is never done.
Talk to people and let them know
How the VFW Auxiliary can help them grow!
So roses are red, violets are white
The members of the Department of NC are dynamite!
Thank you for all the hard work each of you has done for membership! We reached our
Quarter Two goal of 130 new/rejoin members. However, we have much work left to do! Our
third quarter goal is 195 new/rejoin members. We are very close to reaching 100%, as we now
stand at 92.15%!
Remember it is the responsibility of EACH member to help our organization grow. Perhaps you
have a family member that can’t decide if they want to join the Auxiliary. Why not give them
a year’s membership as a Valentine gift? What better way to show your love to your family!
Also, I hope each Auxiliary has held or is planning to hold a Family Freedom Festival. This is a
great way to show your community what your Auxiliary does and it is also a great way to
recruit new members!
I have included a copy of the most recent Auxiliary application. Duplicate it and share it with
all your friends!
Thanks again for your hard work! You are the BEST!
By working together, we can CATCH THE DREAM for our veterans and DO WHAT
WE CAN for our veterans!
Loyally,
Lin

Eastern Area Membership
Jan. 2018
Hello Brothers and Sisters of the East, I hope all of you had a Happy New Year.
A new year has arrived and we still have lots of Brothers and Sisters who are not a member in
good standing. As of Jan 24th, 2017, the Eastern bird feeder is 90.36% filled. We are not that far
from being 100%. So we need ALL members to get in contact with the unpaid members and help
collect those dues. We are still ahead of Central and very close to the West and let’s keep pushing.
REMEMBER to get out in the public. Let people know about the VFW Auxiliary and ASK
them if they are eligible to join. Have all of you checked the unpaid members to get them to pay
their dues? There may be a good reason they haven’t. Could be financial. The Auxiliary can pay
those dues for people with hardships. Let us not lose any members because of something they
have no control over.
Sister Lin Moore and I are here to help if you have any questions. If a person is eligible, we’ll try
to find the info you need. I am more than willing to go to your meeting and talk to the members
if you need me to.
I want to welcome new members to the Auxiliary since our last newsletter. PLEASE send me an
e-mail if your Auxiliary votes in a mew member. BE PROUD OF THEM!

Our Membership percentages are climbing we only need 189 members to reach 100%! Keep up the great work at recruiting and retaining our precious members. 3 Auxiliaries have reached the 100% goal. Congratulations to Burlington Auxiliary 10607, Rockingham Auxiliary 4203, amd Southern Pines 7318.
Retention Helpful Hints:
Make Members feel they are part of your Auxiliary
Show Members your Appreciation and how valuable they are to this organization.
Get Members involved, allow them to share ideas.
Invite them to District, State and National activities
Be KIND to them!
Recruitment Helpful Hints:
Get ACTIVE in the community.
Set up a Booth for recruitment at local events.
Ask family and friends if they qualify.
Be alert and have membership applications on hand, someone may tell you they are eligible to join during everyday conversations.
Rejoin:
Ask members who have dropped their membership to rejoin. Their could be a simple reason why they didn’t return.
There are still many Auxiliaries below 75% in membership. Please, if your struggling obtaining your renewals, pick up the phone and call! I would be happy to assist. (717) 587.2949. You may also reach out to your District Presidents. No Excuse, just recruit!
God Bless,
Connie

February 2018
Hi, my fellow Auxiliary sisters and brothers! Guess what month this is……….it’s the
LOVE MONTH!!!!! Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and it’s time you tell
someone you love them. That’s right, maybe not in a romantic kind of way, but I
can certainly say that I do love all my sisters and brothers in my Auxiliary. And I tell
them all the time that I do. This would certainly be a perfect month to give
someone in your Auxiliary a LOVE GIFT and pay their membership dues. Some of
our sisters and brothers have been sick with all of this flu and pneumonia stuff that
is going around, they have been paying for medicines and maybe cannot afford to
pay their membership right now. I’m just saying it would be a nice gesture on the
Auxiliary’s part.
I have an update on our membership race between the Western Area Districts. As
of January 19th here are the totals. District 11 has 82.57%, District 13 has 91.94%,
District 14 has 88.75%, District 15 has 90.24%, District 16 has 94.32% and District
17 has 88.84%. SO THAT MEANS THAT DISTRICT 16 IS WINNING SO FAR!! Way to
go District 16!!!! That means you probably only have a couple of members to renew
or to get a few new members. But that doesn’t mean that these other districts are
going to stand by and let you guys win.
Come on everybody, let’s all work on membership and make our Western Area
100%!!
