1Introduction
Videojet 8520 PrinterThe Videojet 8520 printer uses thermal inkjet printer technology. The key benefits of thermal inkjet printing are high speed, high quality, ease of use, reliability, flexibility and cost effectiveness.
Equipment DescriptionThe main parts of Videojet 8520 printer are described as follows:
• CLARiTY Controller: Houses the power supply unit and touch screen. You can access jobs, setup jobs, set the various print parameters using the touch screen.
• Printhead: Houses the ink cartridges and head plates and allows the incorporation of accessories (sensor, optical fiber, protective caps and adapter/spacer plate etc.).

This also avoids overheating of the printhead, the photoelectric cell and the cartridge as a result of being installed too close to sources of process heat.

Electrical Power

PERSONAL INJURY. This equipment must be installed with a locally positioned mains supply isolation device. This can be either a plug and socket or a switch connector or circuit breaker in accordance with IEC 60947-3 or IEC 60947-2.

Ink CartridgeThe smart ink cartridge contains data that can be viewed on the UI such as ink type, ink expiration date, ink batch number, cartridge ID, usage data etc. When the smart cartridge is inserted into the printhead correctly, the cartridge status is updated to show authenticated.
Figure 3-3 shows the smart ink cartridge.
CLARiTY ControllerThe CLARiTY controller houses the power supply unit and touch screen. You can access jobs, setup jobs, set the various print parameters using the touch screen. All communication and power supply cables are connected directly to the controller.

Photoelectric CellThe printheads are equipped with four M3 threads to fit the photoelectric cell. For more information refer to Videojet 8520 Operator Manual (Part Number: WLK463139).
Note: The photoelectric cell is PNP type.
Shaft EncoderThe shaft encoder is used to match the printing speed of the target material as it passes the printhead. The encoder is wired into the printer’s encoder connector. For more information, refer to Videojet 8520 Operator Manual (Part Number: WLK463139).

Getting started with the CLARiTYCLARiTY is an icon-based operator control system. It has an easy-to-use touch screen and most areas of the display are active, that is, touching an area on the screen is like pressing a button on a traditional control panel. All technical aspects of the printer setup and control are accessed through the Tools button.
Figure 4-1 on page 4-2 shows the home screen of the CLARiTY operator system.

Using the Home Page
The Home page allows the user to access the following pages:
• Printer Status Bar: Provides information about the status of the printer like Running if the printer is online, Offline if the printer is disconnected, Shutdown if the printer is switched off.
• Tools Button: Permits the user to access the Tools page.
• Current Job Details Page: Displays the information about the current job.
• Consumables Information: Displays the status of connected cartridges. The percentage of ink will be displayed for authenticated cartridges.
• Print Position: Permits the user to set the product delay parameters. Product delay is the time between the start of the product (trigger point) and the print start position.
• Performance Information: Provides information about the number of jobs produced in a batch, total number of individual jobs printed and the speed at which the job is printed, ignored printhead print signal details and so on.

• System Control Buttons: Permits the user to switch off or switch on the printer.
• Home Button: Permits the user to access the Home screen as shown in Figure 4-1.
• Job Select Button: Permits the user to select the required job from the list.
How to Configure the Printer
CLARiTY Configuration ManagerAs coding and labelling equipment have become increasingly versatile and flexible with a wide range of applications, the number of variables that can be configured within a printer has become very large. Although printers are pre-programmed with default values, as the extent of the application increases, it becomes less likely that the default configuration is ideal. This can lead to a large and cumbersome menu tree on the printer’s controller that users have to work with.
Most printer variables are set during the installation process. The variables are set to values that tailor the printer to the application. Once set, these variables only need to be changed when the application for the printer changes. As such, there is no need to make these installation parameters available in the printer interface. They are set through a configuration programme called CLARiTY Configuration Manager.

The CLARiTY Configuration Manager (Figure 4-2) is a PC software program, that provides the following basic features:
• Setting of the printer variables
• Saving/retrieving a set of variable values to a PC file for later/repeated use
• Downloading a set of variables to the printer's CLARiTY controller for non-volatile (permanent) memory storage in the printer
• Uploading a set of variables from the printer for review/comparison/modification
• Updating the system software
• Saving/retrieving language files
• Saving/retrieving job, font, and graphics files
• Snapshot of CLARiTY screens

As a result, the CLARiTY controller retains the availability of a small number of operating variables for the user to change. Apart from making the CLARiTY control system more simple and user-friendly, it also provides an increased level of printer system integrity, because the configuration variables cannot be accessed from the printer itself, but from a connected PC.
If the printer is installed to run in a standalone mode (i.e., the printer is not networked), the PC is only linked briefly (via the RS232 serial or ethernet port) for the period of upload/download of the variables (a few seconds). The PC would then be removed.
In a networked environment, system administrators could have direct access to the printer, while line operators are limited to accessing only the operating variables that are relevant to them.
How to Install the CLARiTY Configuration ManagerCLARiTY Configuration Manager is available in the USB with the Operator Manual. To operate the USB, the system requires Windows 7.0 or later operating system with minimum 5 MB capacity and ethernet or serial port. The installation routine commences automatically.
Do the following tasks to install:
1 Insert the Operator Manual USB.
2 Click on the USB drive.
3 Click on CLARiTY Configuration Manager in the home page.
4 Run the CLARiTYConfig.exe file.
Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software. The software is installed in the PC and is ready for use.

How to Connect the CLARiTY Configuration Manager to the Printer
Note: When you connect the CLARiTY Configuration Manager to the printer, the first connection must be done using an RS232 connection.
How to Connect the CLARiTY Configuration Manager to the Printer using an RS232 connectionDo the following tasks to connect the CLARiTY Configuration Manager to the printer:
1 Connect the PC serial port to the CLARiTY controller using the null-modem cable.
2 Ensure that all other programs (such as, Active sync and other PDA applications) that use the serial port are disabled.
3 Run the CLARiTY Configuration Manager on the PC (Figure 4-3).
4 Ensure that the printer status panel (at the bottom left of the window) reports the message "Connection Active" and the new printer icon turns green.
If the status displays "Not connected", disable or quit the other applications running on the PC that are using the serial port. Check that the baud rate settings on the Configuration Manager matches with the printer’s baud rate.

5 Click the Upload button (see Figure 4-4 on page 4-7). The progress of the operation is displayed in the status panel. This uploads the printer parameters set to the PC.
The list of folders containing the configuration parameters appears in the parameter listing (in the right hand frame of the Configuration Manager).
How to Connect the CLARiTY Configuration Manager to the Printer using an Ethernet cableThe following components are required to connect the printer to CLARiTY Configuration Manager via Ethernet cable:
• Correct Ethernet cable
- If connection is being made directly between the PC and the printer, a crossed Ethernet cable must be used.
- If the connection is being made via an office LAN or Ethernet hub, an ordinary uncrossed patch cable is used.
• Correct configuration of the PC ethernet port
• Correct configuration of the printer’s ethernet port

To connect the CLARiTY Configuration Manager to the printer, the following settings have to be done on the PC ethernet port and printer’s ethernet port:
PC
The PC Ethernet port must be set up to connect at a specific IP address. If you are connecting via an office LAN, consult with your IT manager before assigning IP addresses to your PC. If you are making a direct connection, you may specify any IP address.
1 Open the PC Ethernet port properties and select Use the following IP address. Then specify the new address (example: 10.27.55.130 in Figure 4-5) and the subnet mask (Usually 255.255.255.0).
2 Click OK to apply the settings.

3 Connect the CLARiTY Configuration Manager to the printer using an RS232 connection and upload the printer’s parameters.

4 Locate the TCP/IP configuration parameters as shown in Figure 4-6.
5 Set the BinaryCommsNetworkPort parameter to 3001.
6 Set the IP address to be in the same range as the PC port (example: 10.27.55.131 in Figure 4-5 on page 4-8)
Note: The printer IP address should not be the same as the IP address of the PC.
7 Set the Subnet mask to match that of your PC port.
8 Click the Download button to download the parameters to the printer.

9 Click the New Coder icon and change the method of connection to Network. Enter the correct IP address and Port number to match the values downloaded into the printer.
10 Click the Apply button and the new settings are activated and the coder icon turns green.
11 Click the Upload button. The progress of the operation is displayed in the status panel. This uploads the printer parameters set to the PC.
The list of folders containing the configuration parameters appears in the parameter listing (in the right hand frame of the Configuration Manager).

How to Edit the ParametersFigure 4-8 displays the list of parameters that are available in the printer settings.
Click the folder required to open or close it or to gain access to the parameters it contains. You may have to click and open a number of nested folders to get to the parameter that you want.
There are a number of different types of parameters. Click Help on the menu at the top of the screen, and select Key To Legends to get a complete list of the different types of parameters.
Do the following tasks to change the value of a parameter:
1 Click the required parameter from the parameter list. The current value is displayed in the Value box at the bottom of the screen.
2 Change the value to the required value using the mouse and the keyboard.
3 Click the Apply button. The value displayed in the parameters list is updated to reflect the change.
Note: Event parameters do not have values that can be set. Touching the Trigger button that is available in the bottom pane causes the printer to perform the given action on download.

Note: The list of configurable parameters for the printer are shown in Appendix B, “CLARiTY Configuration Manager”.
For many parameters, it may be satisfactory to leave them with their default values. Some of the parameters may need tuning after some initial prints have been made. Some of the listed parameters are available at the CLARiTY panel. It may be more convenient to make final adjustments at the panel rather than using the CLARiTY Configuration Manager.
CLARiTY Configuration Manager has a default administrative password. This protects certain parameters from change. To change the administrative password navigate to Advanced passwords > Change Admin Password. The Default password is password.
How to Save the Changes in the PrinterDo the following tasks to make the changes effective:
1 Click the Printer icon in the left-hand pane to open the printer controls at the bottom pane of the window.
2 Click the Download button to update the printer with the changes that you have made to the parameters.
A dialog box opens with the message “The parameters to be downloaded have not been saved to an archive”.
3 Touch OK to continue with the download.
The new parameters are active when the download is complete.
Note: Unless steps 1 to 3 are performed, none of the parameter changes become effective in the printer.

How to Save the User Password changes in the printerDo the following tasks to make the changes effective:
1 Click the Printer icon in the left-hand pane to open the printer controls at the bottom pane of the window.
2 Either select ‘Update Passwords on Download’ to update the passwords when changes are downloaded to the printer or select ‘Update Passwords’ to update the passwords only.

How to Archive the Current ParametersThe set of parameters can be saved as an archive and are stored on the PC. The archive can be loaded into the Configuration Manager and downloaded to the printer again at a later date to revert to the archived set of parameters.
Once the printer has been configured, it is recommended that all the parameters be uploaded into the PC, and saved as an archive.
Do the following tasks to archive the current parameters:
1 Right click the Archives folder in the left-hand panel.
2 Select the New Save option from the pop-up menu.
A file for the new save appears under the archives folder with a name containing the current time and date.
3 Change the name of the archive in the bottom panel, and click the Apply button.
How to Load a Saved ArchiveDo the following tasks to load an archive that was saved previously:
1 Locate the archive in the left panel and right click on it.
2 Choose Load from the pop-up menu.
The archived parameters are displayed on the right-hand pane.
3 Click the Printer icon from the left-hand panel and click the Download button to load the archive of parameters to the printer.
Caution
EQUIPMENT DAMAGE. If the CLARiTY controller is used within a network (Ethernet/IP or TCP/IP), the “Power over Ethernet“ (PoE) setting must be deactivated for the network being used. Otherwise, the LAN module of the CLARiTY controller may be damaged.
Note: To put the new settings into effect, the CLARiTY controller must be re-booted. If you have any questions concerning your network, contact your IT administrator.

Purging OptionsNote: Purging features are optional and they are in disabled mode by default.
Timed PurgingPurging of the cartridge is carried out at timed intervals when the printhead is powered on but not printing.
Timed Purging is set up using CLARiTY configuration manager. The user can set the length of purge and the time interval for timed printing.
If the printhead is powered on and has not been printing, the printhead will purge once it reaches the inactivity period of time defined by the user. The function can be turned ON or OFF. When there is no sufficient time to complete the purge, purging will be aborted.
Note: The purge length varies as per the ink used and hence you can enter the purge length as required.
Product Detect PurgingPurging of the cartridge occurs when print is triggered prior to printing if the timer has expired. The timer is reset.
This purging is a user configurable timer. It can be turned ON or OFF. When the printer is in ONLINE state, ‘Product Detect Purging’ will be active. The print resets the timer. The length of purge is defined by the user. The timer must have elapsed for a purge to be triggered before the next print. Once elapsed, purging occurs before the next print, triggered by the print sensor.

How to Set the Purging FunctionTo set up the purge function:
1 Navigate to Devices > PHds > 1 > Consumables > PurgingMode.
2 Select either Disabled, Timed Purging or Product Detect Purging as required. By default it is set to Disabled.
3 Set the IdleTimePurgeDelayInSeconds time as required.
4 Set the duration of the Purge (in number of lines) at Devices > PHds > 1 > Print Information > NumberofPurges.

Working with PasswordsPassword protection on the CLARiTY user interface allows different protected access levels for the various operational features of CLARiTY. During installation, you can set the standard (normal) or advanced password selection using CLARiTY Config Manager. The default password option is Disabled (Figure 4-16). Protection may be globally enabled or disabled.
Note: If you do not want to have password protection, you can select “Disabled” option.
CLARiTY has five different functions that may be optionally password protected:
• Job Select
• Registration
• Set-up
• Diagnostics
• Databases
Password control can be set up as per the user requirement. The password level remains active until logged out by the user or timed out.

• Standard (normal) Passwords: This is a general password setup where the printer function is protected by a common password for the level of user.
• Advanced Passwords: This is a fully configurable option that allows individual users to be setup for bespoke access either as an individual or part of an access group with individual passwords.
To set up the passwords, navigate to UserInterfaces > Passwords > Enable Passwords. Select the required password (Figure 4-17).
Note: To download passwords and save changes to passwords, use either 'Update password on download' or 'Update Password' option.

Reverse Print
Input ConfigurationInput configuration information enables users to choose alternate functions for external inputs 1, 2 and 3.
CLARiTY configuration manager allows user to assign each of the external inputs to one of the following functions and also to assign whether they are active high or active low.
• Not Used
• External Print Sensor
• External Print Gating
• External Error
• Clear Print Queue
• Line Select Strobe
• Line Select 3
• Reverse Print Direction
Note: In a Line Select setup, Line Select 3 must be assigned to Input 3 only.
The input functions are:
• External Error: When activated, this input will generate a fault condition and stop the printer. This may be used to interlock the printer with external equipment.
• Clear Print Queue: When activated, this will clear the current job and empty the print queue.
• Reverse Print Direction: When activated, this will cause the printer to print in the reverse direction. This is used, for example, where the printer is mounted on a traversing unit and the print direction needs to change depending on which direction the traversing unit is travelling. The print direction must be set prior to the next print signal.

Traversing ModeTo enable the printer to print in both forward and reverse direction, do the following:
1 Set the following parameters:

Group ConfigurationThe User Interface system configuration wizard takes you through the step by step process to group the printheads together and their setup.
In CLARiTY Configuration Manager, there are a number of tools to allow the configuration and set up of the printheads in groups.
Grouping allows the number of printheads selected to operate as one printhead, i.e. print one job that is stitched between the group of printheads.
The following parameters need to be set up for grouping:
Printhead offsetsTo ensure the correct stitching together of the image or job, it is necessary to tell the printer, the distance between the first line of each individual printhead.
Set the PrintheadOffset2to1 to the required distance between nozzle line 1 of printhead 2 to nozzle line 1 of printhead 1.
Repeat the procedure for the remainder of the printheads.

Group ConfigurationWhen the banner at the bottom of the screen is selected, it allows the user to configure each of the four groups as required, using the four printheads.
Once a group is configured, the printhead nomenclature in the CLARiTY Configuration Manager refer to the groups attributes. If only one group is configured, then those parameters in Devices > Printhead > 1 are valid for all printheads 1 to 4.
If there are two groups configured with two printheads in each, then Group 1 contains printhead 1 and 2 and Group 2 contains printhead 3 and 4 as described below:
- Devices > printhead 1 = Group 1 parameters
- Devices > printhead2 = Group 2 parameters
The example shown in Figure 4-20 shows that all the four printheads have been set up in Group 1.
Note that the Printhead > Enabled parameter remains for each individual printhead.
For example:
If there is only one group, and printhead 4 > enabled parameter is turned off, then printhead 4 will be disabled.

How to Configure the Job Settings in CLARiSOFTThe job is set up in CLARiSOFT. The settings are made specific to the active print job only (.CIFF file).
Note: All the dimensions are in millimeters (mm).
Size & Resolution
PrintheadsWhen a new file is created in CLARiSOFT, the corresponding number of print fields is defined by the user. One printhead corresponds to one print field. The job can be user-defined within this print field (no restrictions in terms of numbers of lines, etc.). Only the maximum print heights are predefined.
One printhead = maximum print height 12.7 mm (0.5”)Two printheads = maximum print height 25.4 mm (1”)Three printheads = maximum print height 38.1 mm (1.5”)Four printheads = maximum print height is 50.8 mm (2”)
On selecting the number printheads, the grouping will also be determined.
Note: Printing requirements must be understood to set up the message and controller parameters correctly.
Examples:
• All individually: Each head prints different data within a job. If this setting is selected, whenever you create a new job you will be given exactly the number of print fields that were set in Number of printheads.
• All like head 1: All the printheads print the same data as head 1. In this setting, only one print field is made available. The text entered for head 1 applies automatically to all the heads which were predefined for this job under Number of printheads.
• Heads 3/4 like heads 1/2: Heads 3 and 4 print the same data as heads 1 and 2 (example: two-sided carton printing). In this case only two fields will be available for entering the print data. The text entered there applies equally to heads 1/2 and 3/4.

Nozzle RowsThe ink cartridge has two nozzle rows. The printer can be set up to print with both nozzle rows or only one nozzle row (left/right). This is set up during commissioning. With this setting, you can select vertical resolution between 300 dpi and 600 dpi. This has an influence on the density value of the printed text and the ink consumption of the CLARiTY.
Note: With a single nozzle row, the printed text is printed vertically with 300 dpi, and with two nozzle rows, it is printed with 600 dpi.
dpi = dots per inch (1 inch = 25.4 mm)
Printing examples:
ResolutionThe resolution of the print job is set up in CLARiSOFT. This sets the horizontal resolution. This setting specifies the number of dpi used for printing in the direction of movement of the product.
The resolution value depends on the speed of product and the ink cartridge used.
Note: You can choose a vertical resolution of 300 or 600 dpi and a horizontal resolution of 60, 75, 100, 120, 150, 180, 200, 240, 300, 360, 450 or 600 dpi.

DataMatrix Optimisation for different print resolutions.
DataMatrix codes should be dimensionally as square as possible. Codes where either the x (length) or y (height) dimension are unequal can result in less-than-optimal bar code grading scores due to axial non-uniformity.
Due to the range of potential module sizes and the inherent ability to print in different vertical and horizontal resolutions, it is possible for a given combination of module size and resolution to result in a sub-optimal score due to axial non-uniformity. While the printer attempts to preserve the vertical height of the code, it can happen that depending on the selected resolution, it is possible that the optimal module size would require a fractional drop of ink. As this is not possible, the printer will round up to the next amount of complete drops.
The following table summarizes the recommended DataMatrix module sizes for a given combination of vertical and horizontal resolutions to prevent the unintended difference in DataMatrix length and height as described above.

Reverse Print SettingsThe print direction (left to right or right to left) is set up in CLARiTY. You can also select to rotate or mirror the image.
Product Delay
The product delay is the distance (in mm) between the beginning of the product and the beginning of the printing area.
Print Length
The print length is the length of the job (example: text masters or the carton) set up in CLARiSOFT. This ensures that the job master is created as per the set length.
Note: The print length can be defined individually for each printhead. The shortest print length determines the print length of all heads.

Print AllocationSome coding applications demand strict control of batch sizes for example controlled pharmaceutical products.
To work in such production situations it is useful to set the coder so that it only prints a precise number of codes before shutting down and waiting for the next batch instruction.
This is called a Print Allocation and it is administered by another computer or line controller.
When the production control PLC or PC authorises a new production batch, a special message can be sent to the printer using the External Serial Interface. This message selects the Job to print, any variable data in the job, and the allocation count, which is the production batch size. These messages can be stored in a queue in the printer and the size of the permitted queue is configurable.
The printer prints the current job until the number of products printed equals the allocation count sent by the controller, at which point it stops. When one allocation batch has been completed, the next job is automatically selected by the printer if there is a pending job in the queue. If there is no pending job in the queue the printer will not execute any further printing operations until a new allocation is sent to it.
Setup of the allocation operation for the printer is performed via the CLARiTY configuration manager, where the following parameter can be set:
• Maximum Queue Length: Defines how many jobs are permitted to be in the Job queue.
The configurable inputs and outputs also can be setup to trigger on certain events related to Print Allocations.
• Clear Print Queue (Input) - Resets the print job queue and deletes all jobs in the queue.
• Job allocation has completed (Output): The current allocation of prints has been completed.
• Job Update queue is full (Output): The maximum permitted number of jobs in the queue has been reached.
• Job Update Queue is not full (Output): The maximum permitted number of jobs in the queue has not been reached.
• New Job allocation is received (Output): A new job allocation message has been received by the printer.
When allocations are enabled, it is possible to view the job queue at the CLARiTY panel in two different ways.

Do the following tasks to view the job queue:
1 Touch the Current job details bar on the home screen to access the ‘Job Preview’ page.
2 Touch the Job Queue button, to display the ‘Image Update Queue’ page. You can view the queue of jobs and the progress of the current job and allocation (Figure 4-27).
3 Select the Edit button to change print limit of the job.

Repeat Print ModeThe Repeat Print Mode function allows the print material to be printed several times with one trigger signal. It is suitable both for endless material and for the multiple printing of a single carton or other kind of print material.
If Repeat Print Mode is not selected, the photoelectric cell will trigger a print every time it detects new print material. This is the most commonly used setting for the printing of unit loads (example: cartons).
Figure 4-28 shows the signal level caused by a carton edge.
Number/Sensor = 0
This uses inhibit print function (input). This enables continuous auto print until the product is no longer there.
The set value of 0 (zero) describes that one signal triggers as many prints as required. Printing is repeated as long as the signal has the High level.

If you enter a different value as 0 (maximum 999), the number of prints per photoelectric cell signal can be precisely defined.
Figure 4-30 shows the signal level caused by paper printmarks.
Note: This is the ideal setting if, for example, cartons have to be printed several times.
Note: The resultant effect for the ‘Repeat Print Mode’ deactivated and the ‘Number/Sensor = 1’ are same.
Variable ModeThe variable mode is an advanced feature which is used to supply variable fields with data from an external source (serialization of the print data).
The user can set on which type of variable fields printing is to be effected.
Two modes are available for serialization of the print data.
In Once mode, each data record is printed only once. If no more data are in the print buffer, the CLARiTY goes in WAIT mode until new data is transferred into the print buffer.
In Continuous mode, a data record is printed repeatedly, until a new data record is transferred or the CLARiTY is stopped.

How to Set up CountersCounters will be set up in CLARiSOFT (example: consecutive numbering).
CountersCounter status
Counter status defines the starting value for the counter. The starting value can be entered as variable data by the user. As a standard, the counter value will be remembered as long as the job is selected. To reset counter to starting value, you must reselect the job. The counter value can be default or user-entered value. The maximum value of the counter is 999.999.999.
Number of SeriesThe Number of Series is the number of products to be identified with the same counter value. This will be set up in CLARiSOFT. It is set up as user-entered fields (variable).
Example: The first product batch is comprised of 50 packages:
Number of series 50 ƒ× The first 50 packages will be printed with the same counter value (= batch number).
Batch Start ValueBy specifying a batch start value you can adjust the size of the first batch. Example: If the quantity in the first batch is lower (rejects in the start up of production, etc.), this can be specified here.
The changed quantity only applies to the first batch. After this the value in Number of batches is used as the basis. If 0 is entered, the first batch has the full number of units.
Example, the batches are comprised of 50 packages per batch.
In the first run through, however, 10 packages are rejected before the printing process can start up. Therefore, 40 is entered in "Batch start value" and 50 in Number of batches (applicable for all subsequent batches).
Counter Final ValueThe counter counts up or down until this value is reached. The next step is determined by the next function Reached Final Value.

Reached Final ValueWhen the final value is reached, this function specifies what happens next when the Counter Final Value has been reached.
Roll over counter: The counter starts again at the value specified under Counter Final Value.
Stop printer: Printing stops when the end value is reached.
Alarm FunctionThe Counter Alarm is activated once the end value has been reached. If the final value is set it does not roll over. When a counter value exceeds, alarm will be raised.
Counters per Print NormalThe Counters per Print Normal function can set up counter step size same as per the print signal.

Counters per Sensor SignalThe counter status is only updated when a new sensor signal is issued.

Rev AA How to Configure the Job Settings in CLARiSOFT 4-43
ShiftsEvery activated shift has a three-part field for entering the start of the shift and the desired code. The field always begins with the name ‘Shift’ and the ‘No.’ of the shift in front. This field cannot be altered. The following part of the field is to enter the start of the shift, either in 24-hour or 12-hour format depending on the hours format. The third part of the field is for entering the desired code for the shift designation. A total of 16 characters are available here.
Use the arrow keys to navigate within the input fields. The only time entered for each shift is the time at which the shift begins. The duration of the shift is derived automatically from the start of the next shift.
FormatFormat is set within the time code in CLARiSOFT.
Select the required Format and Separator from the respective drop-down list.
To edit the format options, select Advanced and select the required formats.
Note: Use the Add -> or <- Remove button to add or remove the formats from Available formats box to Selected formats box. To arrange the selected formats use the Move Up and Move down button.
Merged FieldDo the following tasks to create a merged field type:
1 Click on workspace in CLARiSOFT. Text Properties screen appears.
2 Select Merge Field from the Type drop-down list.
3 Type the required text in the Default Text field.
4 Click Merge. The Field Merger screen appears.
5 To add the Available Fields to the Selected Fields, select the required Fields and click Add ->.
Note: The selection window on the bottom left of the screen displays the selected field. The Preview on the left top corner displays the merged fields.
6 To arrange the fields, use the Move Up and Move Down buttons.
7 Select OK to exit the Field Merger screen.
8 Select the required information from the Checksum Calculation drop-down list.
9 Click Apply. The merged fields appear on the workspace.

Warning
PERSONAL INJURY. Before attempting any maintenance or repair on any part of the product, disconnect the printer from the main power supply and isolate the printer from any external energy sources including other connected equipment.
Information on Care• If the display is soiled, it can be cleaned using a commercially
available moist screen cleaning wipe.
• Dust on the contact pins of the printhead can be evacuated using a vacuum pump or be removed with a fine paintbrush. Make sure to switch off the printer while doing this.
Caution
EQUIPMENT DAMAGE. The use of an incompatible cleaning kit can seriously damage your printer. Such damage will not be covered by your printer warranty. Use only cleaning kits approved by your dealer.

Updating the CLARiTY Operating SystemThe CLARiTY operating system can be upgraded by a process called a ‘CLARiTY Update’.
The current version of the software appears at the page Tools > Diagnostics > Control > Versions where the software part number can be read.
The part number has the format:
Part.Version.Service Pack
For example: 402571.r01.SP1 represents part number 402571, Revision 01, Service pack 1.
If the software is corrupted or was not installed correctly, the software part number states “Incompatible Software Versions”. When this message appears, a CLARiTY update must be performed immediately to correct the situation, otherwise it results in unpredictable printer behavior.
The printer should be used only when a valid part number appears in the part number window.
There are two ways of performing a CLARiTY Update:
1 Connecting the printer to a PC, that runs CLARiTY Configuration manager
2 Inserting a USB memory stick containing the update file into the printer
Before performing a CLARiTY Update it is strongly recommended that a parameter archive is saved using CLARiTY Configuration Manager (Refer “How to Archive the Current Parameters” on page 4-14).
CLARiTY Update via PCIt is recommended that when updating via PC, the PC-Printer connection is done via Ethernet. This process is faster (refer “How to Connect the CLARiTY Configuration Manager to the Printer using an Ethernet cable” on page 4-7 for connecting a PC to the printer via Ethernet).
You must have the CLARiTY Update CAB file stored on the PC disk. Contact your local service representative to obtain the correct file for your printer.

Do the following tasks to update the CLARiTY:
1 Connect the printer to the PC and when the coder icon is green, right click on the icon.
2 Click on CLARiTY Update and navigate to the CAB file stored on the PC disc.
3 Click on the file name and the update process commences.
4 The update file is initially downloaded and the progress of the download can be followed in the Progress pane of the CLARiTY Configuration Manager screen.
5 Once the download is completed the CLARiTY Update of the printer starts and the CLARiTY screen indicates the progress of the update.
Note: It is very Important to ensure that the power to the printer is not removed during the update process, or the flash card in the printer may get corrupted.
When the update is finished, CLARiTY automatically re-boots and then the CLARiTY Home page appears.
6 Check the software part number in the Diagnostics screen to ensure that the update has been successful.

CLARiTY Update via USB Memory StickUpdating of printer software is possible from a USB memory stick as opposed to a PC/Laptop and CLARiTY Configuration Manager.
Do the following tasks to update the CLARiTY using a USB stick:
1 Copy the CLARiTY software onto a USB memory stick.
Note: The software must be stored in a root directory called \CLARiTYupdate.
2 Connect the stick to the CLARiTY Operator Interface via the USB port (see Figure 5-2).
3 If the CLARiTY Configuration Manager parameter called “Prompt On CLARiTY Update Detect“ is set to Yes, when the device is connected to the CLARiTY Operator Interface, a confirmation page appears.
4 If the parameter is set to No, navigate to Tools > Setup > Control and touch the CLARiTY Update button.
5 Select Yes to proceed to the next stage of the update or No to return to the home page.

Non-Authenticated Ink Cartridge Warning
Ink cartridge being used is not a smart cartridge.
Purchase and install genuine Videojet smart cartridges. Touch the warning and press Clear button to clear the warning message.
Ink cartridge being used is from a third ink party supplier and cannot be identified for ink type and delivered ink volume.
Ink cartridge is faulty. It may not be programmed correctly or cannot be read.
Try using a different Videojet smart cartridge. Touch the warning and press Clear button to clear the warning message.
Other Cartridge Faults
Dirty or contaminated electrical contacts on the ink cartridge and/or mating contacts inside printhead.
Remove the ink cartridge and inspect electrical contacts on ink cartridge. Ensure that there is no ink, debris or other foreign substance on the contacts. Use a flashlight to inspect the mating contacts inside the printhead. Clean contacts as necessary and re-test. If problems persist, try using a different Videojet smart cartridge.
Possible electrical component failure inside the printhead.
Contact your Videojet customer service or your local distributor.

E5301 Group %2 Print Queue Overflow
Group %2 has detected more than five products between the print sensor and the printhead. This may be due to pack spacing or false sensor triggers, or a faulty sensor. Press the “Clear” button below to clear this fault message and then try to resume printing. If the problem persists, call your maintenance engineer or local service tentative.
E5302 Group %2 Not Ready Group %2 has been triggered to begin printing on a new product before completing the print for the previous product. This could be due to: inadequate product spacing or false print sensor triggers, or incorrect fixed speed setting (if you are running in fixed speed mode, without a conveyor speed encoder), or a faulty print sensor or faulty printhead. Press the “Clear” button below to try and resume printing. If the problem persists, call your maintenance engineer or local service representative.
E5303 Group %2 Print Signal Ignored
The number of consecutive ignored print signals by Group %2 has exceeded the defined limit. Please check that prints are being triggered correctly and that the selected job fits the product. Press the “Clear” button below to dismiss this error.
E5304 Printhead Power Supply
An open circuit fault has been detected in the printhead power supply. Power the printer off and on to resume printing. If the problem persists, call your maintenance engineer or local service representative.
E5305 Printhead Power Supply
A short circuit fault has been detected in the printhead power supply. Power the printer off and on to resume printing. If the problem persists, call your maintenance engineer or local service representative.

E5307 Printhead %1 - No Cartridge
No cartridge has been detected in printhead %1. To clear this fault press the 'Replace Cartridge' button and follow the instructions.
E5308 Printhead %1 - Printhead Disconnected
No printhead is connected to the printhead %1 connection. Power the printer off and check that the cables are correctly connected. Re power the printer and verify that the fault has cleared. If the problem persists, call your maintenance engineer or local service representative.
E5309 Printhead %1 - Voltage Error
An over voltage error has been detected by printhead %1. Replace the cartridge using the 'Replace Cartridge' option for printhead %1 available from the Consumable panel on the Home screen. If the problem persists, call your maintenance engineer or local service representative.
E5310 Printhead %1 - Voltage Error/>
An under voltage error has been detected by printhead %1. Replace the cartridge using the 'Replace Cartridge' option for printhead %1 available from the Consumable panel on the Home screen. If the problem persists, call your maintenance engineer or local service representative.
E5311 Printhead %1 - Over Temperature
The temperature of printhead %1 is too high. Continuing to run at this temperature could result in damage to the cartridge. Press the “Clear” button below to dismiss this warning.
E5312 Printhead %1 - Over Temperature
The temperature of printhead %1 is critically high. Printing has been stopped to prevent damage to the printhead electronics. This fault may be cleared by pressing the “Clear” button below once the temperature has returned to safe operating levels.
E5313 Printhead %1 - Monitoring Error
Printhead %1 temperature and status cannot be monitored due the high duty cycle of the printer. Monitoring of this printhead will recommence when the duty cycle reduces. Press the “Clear” button below to dismiss this warning.
E5314 Printhead %1 - Ink Low
The ink level of the cartridge in printhead %1 is low. The cartridge should be replaced at the first available opportunity to prevent down time on the production line. To clear this warning press the 'Replace Cartridge' button and follow the instructions.

E5340 Printhead %1 - Maximum Ink Volume

A serious drop in the mains power has been detected. In order to protect the printer from damage, the high voltage circuits have been switched off. You must now repower the printer in order to resume printing. If the problem persists, call your maintenance engineer or local service representative.
E1009 Corrupt MAC Address
The MAC address of this printer is corrupt and the printer cannot function without a valid MAC address. Contact your maintenance engineer or local service representative who will be able to correct this problem.
E1010 Invalid Line The line selection inputs have requested a line that is not configured. Use CLARiTY Configuration Manager to check that the correct number of lines have been setup for this system. Also check that the line selection inputs are connected properly. Press the “Clear” button below, to clear this warning message.
E1011 Production Disabled A request to print a product has been received for a line that production has been disabled on. Please press the Job button on the home screen and check that the line configuration is correct. Press the “Clear” button below, to clear this fault message.

E1012 No Line Selected A print signal has been received for a product without any line selection. Please check that the line selection system is functioning correctly. Press the “Clear” button below, to clear this fault message.
E1013 BETA Expired The beta period for the release has expired. Contact your maintenance engineer or local service representative to correct this problem.
E1014 Time and Date may be incorrect
The printers time and date may not be correct. The most common cause for this is that the battery used to backup the printers clock is flat. If this problem returns the next time the printer is power on then the battery should be replaced. If the battery is flat the date and time, the currently selected job and some performance data will be lost when the printer is switched off. Press the “Clear” button below, to clear this warning message.
E1105 Invalid Job File - Multiple Transmitted Fields
The Job file is invalid and needs to be corrected using CLARiSOFT A Transmitted Field attribute was found on more than one field. Only one field can be tagged as the transmitted field. Use CLARiSOFT to correct this error in the Job file. Then, download the corrected file to CLARiTY and Press the “Clear” button below, to clear this fault message.
E1214 Invalid Job File - Invalid Checksum Data
The Job file is invalid and needs to be corrected using CLARiSOFT. A field in the Job file uses a checksum (e.g. an EAN13 barcode with a price verifier digit) but the data supplied to calculate the checksum were not valid. Use CLARiSOFT. to check and correct fields using checksums in the Job file. Then, download the corrected file. Press the “Clear” button below, to clear this fault message.
E1215 Invalid Job File - invalid barcode height
The Job file is invalid and needs to be corrected using CLARiSOFT. The height supplied for a barcode in the Job file is smaller than the minimum allowed by the barcode specification. Use CLARiSOFT to check and correct the barcode fields in the Job file. Then, download the corrected file. Press the “Clear” button below, to clear this fault message.
E1216 Invalid Job File - Barcode Symbology Not Installed

Basic Principles
The structure of the barcode must correspond to the directives applicable for barcode structures (example, ean/UCC), i.e. how many and which characters are required and are permitted, what is the structuring sequence for structured codes, what size is possible and makes sense, are data field identifiers being used etc.
When setting up barcode fields, check how the ink used behaves on the substrate used.
If bleeding (blotting paper effect) has been detected, the value of the bar width reduction must be adapted accordingly, as otherwise the bar width

tolerances may not be complied with. This may impair the reading performance of the scanner.
The bar width reduction value determines the number of pixels reduced on the sides of the individual bars of the barcode. To this effect, it is recommended to perform some test prints to judge the behavior.
To generate barcodes of the required quality, the Videojet 8520 requires a precise speed signal. If the speed signal is wrong, the barcode is either compressed, stretched or printed with tailing, which necessarily impairs the reading effect. Thus, a shaft encoder should be used, as far as possible.
When printing by means of several printheads, adjust the sensor distance and the alignment of the printheads with regard to the direction of product movement, so that “stepped” printing is avoided.
The resolution must be set so that the blotting effect is not too distinct, and on the other hand, the contrast is strong enough.
The quality of the overall pattern depends also highly on the substrate used.
EAN13/EAN8
Bar CodingHere, the 12 digits of the EAN 13 respectively the 7 digits of the EAN8 are entered. The last digit = check digit does not have to be entered manually because it is calculated by the program itself.
Pixel Reduction*This function is provided to enable the legibility of the barcode to be adjusted to account for different combinations of ink and substrate (product packaging material). This is particularly important if the ink bleeds heavily on the substrate (= runs). In order to achieve the optimum presentation of the bars on such materials, a bar width reduction is recommended.
Note: Leave the value unchanged first and then decide after the first test print whether an adjustment is required.
Scale FactorThe Scaling function is for expanding or compressing the barcode so that it can be adjusted to meet requirements.

In the case of very small print areas which require barcode scaling of under 100% it will often be necessary to combine scaling and barcode reduction.
Example:
With scaling of 70% the spaces between the bars are still very small. Depending on the material, the ink may fill the spaces. In order to avoid this, the bar width should be reduced with the Bar width reduction menu item and this will produce an optimum barcode print.
HeightHeight is for setting the print height of the barcode measured in millimeters (mm).
With TextThis is for specifying whether the barcode appears with or without a number plain text line.
OrientationThis menu is for setting the orientation of the barcode.
Note: The barcodes Code128, EAN128, 2/5i, Code39, Codabar and the Combi field (refer to “Combi Field” on page C-12) can only be printed with the orientation Left-hand -> Right-hand or Right-hand -> Left-hand.
In case of vertical print orientation, the cleanliness of the cartridges requires special attention.
UPC-A/-E
Bar CodingHere, the 11 digits are entered at UPC-A/-E. The last digit represents the check digit, it is calculated by the program itself.
Compress into UPC-EThe UPC-E code can be generated by selecting Compress into UPC-E. The UPC-E code is a shortened variant of the UPC code, which is also a numeric code with the digits 0-9. The UPC-E is an 8-digit code, with the eighth digit being the check digit and the first digit being a system identifier, which is always 0. The coded digits are included as plain text below the code.

This menu item is for entering the digit combination for the barcode.
Text field/Counter/Date/Time/Shift code If the barcode is only presented with bar coding, no entries have to be made in these fields.
If a label is printed with an additional text field, counter, date, time or shift code entry in the plain text line (the required field is added directly to the plain text line), you have to edit it with "Text Field", "Counter", "Date", "Time", "Shift Code".
The text and the date field can be linked to a master field.
If one of the fields is retrospectively removed from the plain text line, you have to confirm this with "Delete Text field/Counter/ Date/Time/Shift code".
Plain Text LineThe plain text line shows the barcode digits which are entered. This is in a read-only format and cannot be altered.
Text SpaceThe text space function is for specifying the distance (in mm) between the barcode and the plain text line.
Text HeightThis defines the height (in mm) of the text in the plain text line.
2/5iThe barcode 2/5 Interleaved is only admissible for representing the digits from 0 to 9.
The input mask for the barcode 2/5 Interleaved provides the same five standard field types (text field, date, Time, Counter and Shift code) as in the other barcodes (example, EAN 128, Code 128).
Each of the five field types (Text field, Date, Time, Counter and Shift code) are available only once as embedded fields per 2/5 Interleaved barcode field.

For the implementation of the additional functions in the barcode 2/5 Interleaved, the same five standard field types (Text field, Date, Time, Counter and Shift code) are available as in the other barcodes (example, EAN 128, Code 128), (refer to “Code128/EAN128” on page C-4).
The user, when entering the information to be coded, must ensure that only the digits from 0 to 9 are used for the five available embedded fields (Text, Date, Time, Counter and Shift code). Neither is it admissible to use any special characters, such as, .- /etc.
A plausibility check by the Videojet 8520 is not possible, as the existing fields (Text field/Date, Time, Counter and Shift code) with all their configuration options have been used for this functional extension.

DatamatrixThis field is for entering the characters in the Datamatrix code. The code is later shown in the display in the form of a square/rectangular (depending on the matrix selected) with the label 2D for Datamatrix. The matrix size is directly dependent on the number of characters entered here.
Note: All size specifications in relation to the 2D Datamatrix code are based on a resolution of the Videojet 8520 of 600 x 600 dpi.
Module SizeThe module size defines the size of the individual code modules. The value specified here gives the module size in pixels.
Example:
Entering the value 10 means that the module size is 10 x 10 pixels. Under ideal conditions the pixel size should be 0.043 mm.

Lengthwise ReductionAn entry in this field reduces the number of pixels in each module in the direction of printing.
Crosswise ReductionAn entry in this field reduces the number of pixels in each module crosswise to the direction of printing. The size of the Datamatrix code is not affected by these two entries.
Note: This functions "Lengthwise reduction" and "Crosswise reduction" are provided to enable the legibility of the barcode to be adjusted to account for different combinations of ink and substrate (product packaging material). This is particularly important if the ink bleeds heavily on the surface (= runs).
GS1-Datamatrix (EAN Datamatrix)Datamatrix is a two-dimensional matrix symbology. Only the ISO version ECC 200 of the Datamatrix is admissible for EAN applications, as only this version provides the symbology protection usual for EAN. In analogy to the EAN 128 barcode, this is ensured by coding in the first position of the Datamatrix the function character 1 (FNC1).
Other FNC1 characters as "group separator" are placed in the correct position automatically by the Videojet 8520.
The GS1 compliant code (EAN Datamatrix) can be activated via the selection field when building the barcode in Clarisoft with the Composite Data Builder.
Processing the GS1-coded data for the EAN Datamatrix• If the selection GS1 Datamatrix is activated, the input data are coded in
accordance with the EAN128 Standard (FNC1).
• If the selection GS1 Datamatrix is deactivated, the Datamatrix is coded as previously (without FNC1).
Matrix size [number of modules]The list for the matrix size allows you to choose whether the code as a whole should be shown as a square or rectangle. The program then calculates the minimum size in number of crosswise modules x number of lengthwise modules shown at the top edge of the menu in the middle.
This size is the minimum size required for showing the content of the code entered under Datamatrix. If you require the code to be shown with a larger matrix you can select one from the size list. This means that you can keep the same size of matrix for products even when the content varies.

GS1 DatabarOverview GS1 Databar
The GS1 Databar consists of seven possible barcode variants. Many of them are readable irrespective of their position or direction and admissible for coding consumer units as of 2010 in compliance with the application recommendations.
The GS1 Databar is a small linear barcode which allows to code supplementary information such as weight or best-before date in addition to the GTIN ID within an extremely small space. Due to its readability irrespective of position and direction, the barcode is suited for use at the Point of Sale.
GS1 Composite SymbologyThe GS1 Databar allows to combine 1D codes and special 2D codes, with the 2D component always positioned above the 1D code. The two components are separated by a separator pattern.
The linear 1D component comprises the GTIN number. In most cases, the superimposed 2D component comprises the batch code and the expiry date of the product.

BitmapThis will be set up in CLARiSOFT.
This menu item allows you to select logos and graphics (bitmaps) which have previously been saved and print them. Whenever logos are changed or new ones are added they have to be saved in a graphics program as a black-and-white bitmap (file ending "bmp") in the final printing size with a resolution of 600 x 600 dpi. Only bitmaps created in Windows can be used.
The logos can be transferred to the Videojet 8520 via the optional manager software for PC.
Note: The following must be complied with when using bitmaps:• Standard Windows Bitmap• Monochrome (colour depth 1 bit)• Resolution of 600 X 600 dpi• The bitmaps are not scaled, i.e. they cannot be varied in size in the
Videojet 8520, as can example, texts or barcodes.• If a bitmap has example, a resolution of 300 x 300 dpi, the printed
bitmap only has half the width and half the height of the original bitmap.

Data Input in Combi FieldAs in case of the data input lines for barcodes with embedded fields and for the text field, maximum of 80 characters can be entered for the new field type Combi Field. These 80 characters can be used to enter the following contents:
• Free text input
• Embedded text field
• Embedded counter field
• Embedded date field
• Embedded time field
• Embedded shift code field
To do so, proceed as follows:
• In each combi field, three embedded fields of each of the types existing so far may be embedded (i.e. three text fields, three counter fields, three date fields, three time fields and three shift code fields).
• Insertion, editing and deleting of these embedded fields is effected - as in case of Code 128 - via the menu keys.
• The contents of the new combi field cannot be changed via the interface using the Q command.
