Local lives - Derek Andrews
Derek was born in March 1931 in one of the cottages at Duck Corner, Hollesley. He was the eldest of twelve children:Vera, Edward, Barbara, Michael, Kathleen,Gwen, Nevil, Les, Douglas, Doreen and Christine. His father, Walter, worked asa horseman at the Suffolk Punch Trust. The family moved to Moors Farm when
Derek was 4 years old. During the early years ofWW2 when Derek was agedabout 10, a landmine wasdropped between Moors Farmand Dumb Boy Cottage (towards Shingle Street) andthe family were evacuated tofriends and neighbours inHollesley. Meanwhile thearmy moved into part ofMoors Farm and turned thepig-sty into a cookhouse!
Derek clearly remembers the deprivation of those years but also the fun theyall had playing in the fields and on the marshes. They played football using anold tin can and their coats for goals, went fishing in the ditches and scrumpingapples, pears and plums from the abundantfields of orchards. They also played whippertin, when a tin can was laid out in the middle ofthe grass and one child was it. All the otherchildren ran and hid and the object of thegame was to run out and touch the can beforeyou were had.
As WW2 approached, Derek and his friendswould sit on the wall at Moors Farm and andwatch dog-fights during bombing practice - afar cry from picnics on the beach in peacetime!
He attended Hollesley School in the Old SchoolHouse (now converted into homes). At the ageof 10/11 years, Derek became a choirboy in AllSaints’ Church when the vicar was Rev’d Wicksand the choirmistress/organist was Miss MayLennard. The choir sang at both the morningand evening services but before putting ontheir robes, they would ring the bells! Derek later became the Head Chorister and altar boy and he carried the cross at churchservices for several years.
He left school aged 14 years and worked for Mr George Lennard in the groceryshop (now McColls). He was a delivery boy and used a trade bike with a large

basket, mainly delivering meat on a Saturday and groceries to both circles inOak Hill and through the forest to 3/4 cottages in Tangham. This was hard workand entailed going out in all weathers, snow, rain and shine. When he wasn’toccupied with deliveries, he was required to do shelf-stacking, so the days were
long and arduous 9-6pm.Two years later, aged 16,Derek started work with G.W.Smith of Alderton as an apprentice painter/decorator.His National Service was deferred for 2 years in orderfor him to complete his apprenticeship. He then beganhis National Service in the RAFand served for 2 years from1951-53.
He began his training in Wilmslow, Cheshire and then moved to West Drayton,
London near the American photo unit at Kodak. He did general duties aroundthe camp whilst waiting to be posted abroad during the Suez Crisis. His finaltraining was at Deckling in Kent, where he learnt to use a rifle and ammunitionbefore going to RAF Deversoir Airbasein Egypt, built as part of the defences ofthe Suez Canal. He stayed therefor 15 months and was mainlyemployed re-laying runways. Inthe sweltering heat, the tarwould melt and they were required to wear wooden clogs.
When they escorted the localWest Africans to buy provisionsin the local town, Derek carrieda rifle and was ordered to shootat the legs, not the body of any-one who might attack them.
He returned to England in June1953 during the Queen’s Coronation celebrations. All the ships in the Solent were lit up and carried flags as Derek’s ship approached the harbour.
He went back to work for G.W.Smith and it was during this time he met Olive, his future wife who also worked in Alderton as a maid for Dr Lund and Dr Eustache. Olive would make Derek cups of tea and they would enjoy a chat!Derek was invited by a friend to a dance on the lawn at Alderton Lodge andOlive was also there! That was the beginning of a lifetime’s romance. Derekwould cycle to Alderton to meet Olive after work as Olive’s mother was

They were married in April 1954 - a double wedding at All Saints’ Church withDerek’s sister Barbara and Olive’s brother Hubert. Derek and Olive lived inMoorlands and later moved to his present home in Woodbridge Road. They hadtwo sons, Robert and Christopher and now have 5 grandchildren.
After a tip-off from a friend he applied for a post as painter/decorator at theunits within the prison Colony, where he remained for 25 years until he retired. He painted all the prison units and also the prison officers’ houses.
Groups of 3/4 prisonerswere trained up to workalongside Derek.
Some petty thieving tookplace, which Derek founddifficult to deal with but theculprits were reprimanded and after a while, Derek settled down and enjoyedboth the work and the companionship.
in the restoration of the church organ. Itwas stripped down and Derek sand-papered and painted all the organ pipes, including gold-leaf round the lip of eachpipe. It took him 2/3 weeks as therewere dozens of pipes, each requring twocoats of paint. The organ is still in constant use in the church today - andDerek had come full-circle after his earlyyears as a choirboy and bell-ringer!
Derek’s interests after his retirement included serving on the Village Hall Committee and two years on theParochial Church Council. He was also amember of the Church Fabric Fund andcaretaker of the Village Hall.
He has been a member of the Bowls’Club since 1958 and joined the Committee and was Chair for a while. He is now the President of the club and enjoys playing when he is able. A true member of our community!

‘Carols’ are something most of us associate with Christmas. But what is a ‘carol’and how is it different from a hymn or a song ? ‘Carol’ originally referred to ‘aring-dance or the song accompany-ing it’ but a more modern definitionis ‘a song of joy or praise; a Christ-mas song or hymn’.
Although when we speak of carolswe generally mean Christmas carols, there are ‘carols’ for otherseasons of the year as well, for example Easter, Saint’s days and Advent (the 4 weeks leading up toChristmas Day). Going ‘carolling’ has been a winter activity for hundreds of years – cheering people up in thedark cold evenings with merry songs, not necessarily of a religious nature butcelebrating life and music and being together.
Essentially a carol is a joyful song created and sung by ordinary people. Theirsubjects are down-to-earth and include references to plants and animals, foodand drink. While, in the middle ages, the church sang Gregorian chant in Latin, the people sang and danced to carols in the street, the home and the inn.At Christmas time we remember how God, the creator of the universe, camedown to earth, to share our lives in all its joys and sorrows and we celebrate bysinging God’s praise in our churches, schools, streets and pubs. Come and joinus at one of the many carol services in our village churches or singing aroundour streets. (See p.30) Wishing you all joy and peace at Christmas.

Hollesley School - Pipers Vale visit
On 18th October, the whole of Hollesley Primary School went to PipersVale gymnastics centre in Ipswich. We travelled on two coaches withhalf of the school on each.
When we arrived, we put our coats and bags up on the balcony andthen we went down onto the sprung floor and did stretches and
balances altogether towarm up. After that we gotsplit up into groups, mostlyyear groups but a few ofthem were mixed.
Then we went off in ourgroups to do different activities. Some of the activities included usingthe bar, vaults, rings, trampolines and the racingobstacle course. At the endwe had some free timewhen we were able tochoose which of the apparatus we wanted to go
on. It was great to be able to use allof the special gymnastics equipment.
Lacey said, “It was really fun. Myfavourite part was doing flips intothe foam pit. I also enjoyed thetrampoline part – even though I felloff at one point!”
Ewan said “I enjoyed the trampoline because I could backflipon it and it was really bouncy andfun!”
We had a great time, and it seemedthat everyone else enjoyed it too, even if they weren’t very athletic.

Nature Note - Christmas conundrums
Birdwatching can spoil you for other simple pleasures. When I’m watching afilm on TV, I can’t help noticing that the bird songs they put on the film tracks are often wildly inappropriate. From my armchair I have heard tawny owlshooting in Ireland (there aren’t any there), swifts screaming in February (Juneis more like it), and canaries singing in a Jane Austen English country garden
(come off it). Popular songs aren’t anybetter. How about ‘a nightingale sang inBerkeley Square’ (must have been arobin) and ‘there’ll be bluebirds over thewhite cliffs of Dover’ (swallows, I suppose– bluebirds are an American species).
Christmas carols aren’t any better. ‘TheTwelve Days of Christmas’ starts off OKwith twelve drummers drumming andeleven lords a-leaping, and I don’t reallyhave an ornithological problem withseven swans a-swimming or six geese a-laying. I’m getting suspicious, though, when we come to four calling birds (which ones?) and three French hens
(why French?). And I’m positively mystified when we reach two turtle dovesand a partridge in a pear tree. There aren’t any turtle doves around at Christmas – they’re summer visitors in Britain. As for the partridge, this is presumably a grey partridge since this is a traditional carol and the red-leggedpartridge wasn’t introduced into this country until 1790; but I’ve never seen agrey partridge up a tree of any kind, let alone a pear tree. Poetic licence? No,it’s more interesting than that. One theory is that all the twelve ‘presents’ arereally religious symbols and the whole carol is in a kind of code because it wascomposed at a time when it was dangerous to express an outspoken commitment to Christianity. Then it all makes sense: the twelve drummers arebeating out the twelve doctrines in the Apostles’ Creed, the eleven pipers arethe eleven faithful apostles spreading the word, and so on, down to sevenbeautiful swans as the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, six laying geese as the sixdays of creation, four colly birds (the old country name for blackbirds) as thefour apostles, three French hens as the three virtues, and two turtle doves asthe two Testaments. Finally, the partridge is lifted aloft as the resurrectedChrist, and that draws on an even older Greek myth whereby Athena raisedfrom the dead her lover Perdix (the Greek name for a partridge) and carriedhim to heaven in the branches of a pear tree.
That just leaves us with the puzzle of the Christmas turkey – wild turkeys beingnative to the USA. But perhaps we should just eat that and stop worrying.
Happy Christmas!

Dear Editor,
I would like to extend specialthanks to everyone in Hollesley village who welcomed all the trick ortreaters on Hallowe’en.
My boys William, Oliver andJack had a fantastic eveningand I just wanted to say thankyou to everyone who made the evening so special.

Dear Editor,
I have an aviary of budgies - having gone down the garden today to find that28 budgies and 1 cockatiel have been taken from the aviary. I will ask neighbours when they come home from work, but I have checked the aviaryand there is no hole etc or any way otherthan the double door to get into it.
I am very concerned that someone hasbeen into the garden as it clearly was pre-planned, as you cannot steal 29 birdswithout any cages etc. I am writing thisletter as I dont want anyone else to gothrough the same trauma. I will contactthe local police to make them aware too.
Many thanks,

Internet Access Options are Changing
The options for internet access are changing rapidly – even in a rural area likeours. Many people are unhappy with their broadband service. Advertiseddownload speeds are sometimes not being met, there are drop-outs in signalstrength and the speed plummets at weekends and when people return homefrom work. There is now a new option which should be here before long: fibreto the premises (FTTP). Put simply, fibre direct to your house from that Open-
Reach green box.
Our problem is twofold: 1) We only have fibre broadband in our
villages as far as that green box.Thereafter everyone is connected by copper wire to that box. The further you are from the box, the worse the internet speeds be-come. Copper wire is also unreliable and prone to corrosion at junction boxes.
2) Internet demand and usage is headingin one direction: up. That means, whileyou might be managing at the moment,
World wide web the infrastructure can’t and won’t cope with future demands, while your demand is likely to increase.
The Solution: To install fibre from the green box direct to houses in our villages. This will giveguaranteed download and upload speeds of up to 1Gb/sec. You could elect tohave a lower speed of, say, 300Mb/sec. At the moment many homes are luckyif they can get 20Mb/sec with the current infrastructure. County Broadband is acompany based near Colchester that for many years has helped rural communities procure broadband by using radio signals. Now, backed by £46 million of investment, it’s also starting to install FTTP. At the moment they areonly installing in Essex but have plans to move into Suffolk in the New Year.
The Deal: County Broadband needs at least 30 people in a village to register an intereston their website. If that threshold is reached (or hopefully exceeded) it willthen arrange a community meeting to talk through the logistics of installationbefore making a final decision on whether to go ahead. It involves running fibrecables along the existing BT poles and/or underground cable routes, before a fibre optic cable goes straight to your home or business. For homesthe current price in Essex is £20/month for the first 6 months for a 300Mb/secservice (Up to 10 times the speed that you might be lucky enough to get at themoment). For the remaining 18 months this rises to £40/month. Unlike now, these are guaranteed download and upload speeds. There is no limit on theamount of data you can use. There is no installation fee, nor any connection

charge and a free router is provided too. Nor is there any tie-in after the 24months. You could elect to shop around and choose another internet provider. You can also have a phone service, keeping your existing landline number andthe Essex prices are £6/month to call all UK landline numbers, £13/month toinclude all UK mobile numbers too, or £17/month to include international calls and calls to mobiles abroad. All calls on all deals are unlimited.
What next? So are you sufficiently interested? If so, please go to County Broadband’s Fibrewebsite:countybroadbandfibre.co.uk where you can find plenty more information. At this stage no one needs to commit financially or otherwise.
However, to take this idea any further those who are interested do need to register their interest on the County Broadband Fibre website. If we reach the30+ threshold we can then find out more. Please let me know you have registered an interest on [email protected], telling me which villageyou are in so we can monitor progress and try and get them interested in providing a service on the peninsula. If we can get 30 people in each of Hollesley, Alderton and Bawdsey, we should be able to get them fired up tooffer their service here.

Hollesley WIOur speaker’s subject for October was ‘Comic Verse’ with Eric Punaks, who describing himself as ‘Pam Ayres with a paunch’ entertained us with some familiar (and unfamiliar) verses and poems, from theVictorian Capt. Harry Graham, through to T.S. Eliot and Carol Ann Duffyamong others, as well as a variety of ‘verses I wish I’d written’. He told ushow he began entertaining with both talks and verse and soon realised that heshould leave out the talk and just do the comic verse bit! One of the highlightswas his rendition of Victoria Wood’s ‘Let’s do it’ and he ended with Tom Lehrer’sfunny song ‘Irish Ballad’ with guitar accompaniment. He came across as a verywarm personality, and was relieved that we were a friendlybunch, unlike his very firstspeaker’s showcase auditionyears ago. I might just rummage through my understairscupboard and dig out my TomLehrer Songbook!
The choir have now performed atHollesley Church and also at LittleBealings, where they pulled outall the stops and gave a really enjoyable concert with our friendsfrom Ipswich. The church warden at Bealings thoroughly enjoyed it, sayinghow much the choir looked as though they were having fun, and that theywould be delighted to organise a return visit at some point - well done to everyone for a lovely evening!
Four members enjoyed a relaxed walk around Rendlesham Forest, taking in thebeautiful autumn colours and visiting the Bear Grills mobile cafe for baconand/or egg rolls and a well deserved coffee.
We have said a temporary farewell to our playreading group who got togetherto romp through ‘A Fete Worse Than Death’, a comedy/murder mystery by JanePage. This has been a really enjoyable way to spend an hour or so once amonth, with lots of laughs along the way. Thank you Daphne for finding such avariety of works to challenge us, and we look forward to re-starting at somepoint in the future.
By the time you read this we will have had our AGM and be preparing for ourChristmas meeting.
Don’t forget, new members can come at any time, and we would love to seeyou join us.

We had a trailer full of apples in readiness for the Apple
Day on 13 October - thanks to a very generous donation
from Dock Farm. Firstly the apples had to be washed and
quartered (no
need to core)
with just the
rotten bits and odd earwigs taken
out, . very therapeutic, . ready for
pomacing in the scratter - not
sure if a ‘plonker’ was used to
push the quarters down into the
steel teeth.. or if this was one of
Andy’s little jokes!
The crushed pomace was then ready to be filled into a straining bag and placed
in the press – a handle on the top of the press forces a wooden plate down
applying pressure to the layers of pomace - and juice rapidly flowed – we made
about 50 litres! Good fun had by all!
Fortunately the weather improved for
the bonfire and fireworks event on 2
November and it was very well
attended, with food being shared
around and a lovely warm community
atmosphere - the fireworks were a big
hit. A huge thank you to Andy Cassy
for organising both events and to all
those who volunteered their time, without
which these events would not happen.
Boyton Parish Council would like to takethis opportunity to wish all our

Orange and Marmarlade upside down cake
With lots of delicious oranges, clementines and satsumas in season, this is atwist on the classic pineapple upside down cake. It makes a great dessert or afternoon tea treat. It's also a good opportunity to use up the odd jar of home-made marmalade you may still have in thecupboard from earlier in the year. Bestserved warm with the Cointreau creambelow; but ice cream or custard also workswell. If citrus fruit is not your thing, substitute with plums, pears or apples. Allwork really well with the marmalade syrup.
Ingredients/ Equipment18-20cm diameter cake tin (not loose-bottomed!).1 orange, or 2/3 smaller clementines thinlysliced and chopped into small pieces (enough to cover the base of your cake tinin a single layer).100 grams orange marmalade2 tablespoons of golden syrup2 tablespoons whiskey or sherry170 grams self raising flour.
Cointreau cream200 ml double creamZest of an orange1 tablespoon of dark brown sugar Cointreau to taste! ( I usually use a good glug)
MethodGrease the sides and base of your cake tin well with butter. Pre-heat oven to160 c/ gas mark 3. In a small mixing bowl combine the golden syrup, marmalade and whiskey/sherry and pour onto the base of the cake tin. Arrangethe chopped fruit on top of this. Add all the remaining cake ingredients into amixing bowl and whisk for approximately 2 minutes until they are well combined and the mixture light and fluffy. Spoon carefully over the fruit basemaking sure it is completely covered and even. Place in the pre-heated ovenand cook for approx. 35-45 mins until golden brown and springy to the touch. While the cake is cooking prepare the cream. Place all ingredients in a bowl andgently whip until soft peaks are formed. Store in the fridge until ready to serve.Allow to cool for 5 mins and then run a knife around the inside edge of the tin, place a plate over the top of the tin and then invert carefully. Give the tin ashake to help release the cake and lift it off. Serve with the cream on the side.

Guidance to help when sending an item for:
We are always grateful when people write in with information about events, stories or letters. However, it is important that when submitting informationabout an event, due notice is given. Our publication is completed on the 14th ofevery month and the final copy date is always the 10th of each month. Eachmagazine is for the forthcoming month, so to send us an item on 20th October for an event in November is too late - the magazine is already at the printers! We want to make sure that you get a copy through your door on the last weekend of every month.
We have a policy of using a quarter page for notices and are always happy toassist in producing a notice for your event. We will not as a rule, offer more space. We also cannot reduce an A4 size poster to fit in a quarter page because to do so would mean that you could not read the writing as it would betoo small. The quarter page size is 63.5mm x 94mm.
If you have a logo or picture to use, this should be sent separately. This is because if you have downloaded an image or clip art off the web, then the quality may be poor. The photos that we use in the magazine are 300 dots perinch to ensure sharpness, but the download clip art is 72 dots per inch. We lookforward to hearing from you!

Exhibition of Arts and Crafts at Warren HillSome of us were invited to the Warren Hill Café to attend the exhibition of inmates’ art and craft work in Warren Hill. Inside, the room was very well setout and various crafts had their owners with them, whom I would add, spokevery well indeed, giving descriptions of their work so happily. Free coffee andtea were served.
The article which stood out to me was a doll’s house, built in two layers, with furniture in - all built with matchsticks. The garden even had a wishing well! Also, a lovely bench and table had been made, looking very smart! There weresales of goods being sold by the men. In the end they raised £1,300.
When speaking to Fanny Jacobs afterwards, she said she was always pleased toreceive donations of art material, craft, wool and any other materials that couldbe used at Warren Hill. Please ring Fanny with details of your donation on:07973135993.

The Suffolk Heritage Garden has a new manager! Some of you will know HayleyChurchyard from Shottisham who joined us on 8 November.
Hayley works at the Sorrel Horse and was chosen from eight applicants. I thinkshe will be a perfect fit – and she's local!
As well as running the general maintenance and development of the garden, with the volunteer team, she will continue to research the origins of plants in our collection andhunt for others that have been lost. The end result will be a data baseand resource that can be accessedby students and anyone who is interested in the collection.
The main funder of this project is AONB, through an Amenities and Accessibility grant, with additional contributions from Adnams and the ScarfeTrust. I will work with her until she's familiar with the challenges that confronther. (Welcome on board, Hayley - we wish you well! Ed.)
