My days as a television news reporter didnot alleviate my fear of being in front of a still
camera, Kara Stevens Hawthorne told us, but
you would never believe it as she styles two
seasonal looks to cover your holiday sartorial
needs: A sparkling holiday dress from Jackies
in Beaumont and a colorful cold weather
outt from Dillards. I did enjoy the excuse to
wear sequins, she said, with her smile that
sparkles brighter than the bling.
WORKING ON thisissue, I couldnt gettwo pop seasonalsongs out of my
head Do TheyKnow Its Christ-mas? and WeAre the World.Cheesiness factor10, I grant you,
ut the lyrics just seemed to suit the stories so well. Inoth classic collaborations, individually famous musi-ians and singers combined in a group performance toncourage all of us to reach out to others at this specialime of year.
When we seem so divided as a nation, as a world,s people, its reassuring to hear of the many individu-ls who cross borders every day, unwilling to let falseoundaries deter them. Take the example of the interfaith
upport shown by the volunteers from Temple Emanueln Beaumont. Rather than letting the hullabaloo of
Christmas overtake their beliefs, they have found a way to serve their faith and others by ameaningful gift of volunteer service. Or people like Richard Gagn, who step into unfamiliarerritory to find a passionate purpose.
There are many ways you can reach out to others this season. In my family, we like tohoose children the same age as ours from the Salvation Armys Angel Tree. We have fun shop-ing as a family for the boys and girls wishes. If shopping is your idea of fun, you can reachut to others by going to Main Street Market and supporting the Junior League, which in turnupports many important needs in our community.
I leave you with this thought, penned by the late Michael Jackson in his collaboration withLionel Richie:
We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So lets start giving
Theres a choice were making
Were saving our own lives
Its true well make a better day
Just you and me
t may be 25 years since it was written, but it still rings true. Best wishes for a joyous holidayeason.

LIPSERVICEVIPtips for hot holiday lipsEveryone should have red for the
holidays...its a must!Lisa Dishman, an esthetician at Beaumonts On Stage Hair
Design and Day Spa, said that though red is a year-round coloror lips, it is especially popular for the holidays. But while boldips are de rigueur, chapped lips are a winter dont. Before you
pucker up, make sure your lips are perfectly kissable.
n the RedThe hottest hue of the season is sophisticated red. The focus is
on the lips this year, said Sheila Ingham of The Skin Salon & DaySpa in Nederland. Along with pencil skirts and nipped-in waists, bold lips hark back to the Old Hollywood glamour that is all the
age in fashion. If you are looking for the perfect red, Ingham sug-gests comparing potential shades with the inside of your bottom lip.
The right red will complement the color there, she explained. From blue-redso orange-reds, the options can be daunting. If you have any hesitation, ask a
professional makeup artist to help you pick a shade, she said. Nothing can ruinyour outt like the wrong red lip color.
Not sure you can pull o this bold look? Try dabbing frosty gloss on top of theed lipstick to tone it down. Rather than lining with a red pencil, choose a natu-al shade to line and ll in lips and then use the red sparingly on top, Inghamuggested. This will give you a more subtle color. Dont try out the red lipstick
on your way out the door. Instead, Ingham suggests experimenting with severalolors well in advance of your event. VIP
Put Your Lips On Pat some base onto your lips to create a blank canvas.
Lightly dust powder over the base to ll in lines and cracks.
Line lips over natural lip line. Fill in lips with lipliner for a bolder
color.
Dab a bit more powder on top. Use a brush to apply lipstick evenly and accurately.
Apply gloss for a little shine.
For a bee-stung look, dab a bit of frost in the center of your
bottom lip.

Want that fresh from the salon look? Paul Traylor, owner ofBeaumonts On Stage Hair Design and Day Spa, gave VIPa step-by-step guide to the perfect blowout. Whether you suer from at hair, frizzy hair, or hair somewhere in between, we have the recipe for agreat hair day.
Product PowerThe products and tools you use on your hair can make or breakyour style. You want to utilize your product carefully, Traylorexplained. For ne hair, try a volumizer. For curly hair, use astraightening balm to control curl and promote shine. People withnormal hair might try a mousse.
It is important to use a light hand with the product to avoid hel-met head. I see too many people with over-structured hair, saidTraylor. You want to look like you just woke up this beautiful.
Also important are the styling tools you use to create yourblowout. A high-quality hair-dryer will help you control the direc-tion of the hair. I use an Elchim dryer, which is very powerful, but has a small nozzle so that I can really direct the stream of air.Round brushes are another professional must-have. In the past, alot of people didnt like round brushes because they got caught in
peoples hair, Traylor explained. Todays round brushes are made
to avoid that, and they are made on a metal base which heats upand acts almost like a curling iron. In fact, many stylists use roubrushes to create any style from straight to curly.
HairapyRepeated exposure to thermal devices like blow dryers, straig
eners and curling irons can wreak havoc on your locks. Make suto take care of your stressed tresses to avoid weakened hair andbreakage. Hot o the Press is a great new product by Paul Mitcthat I use to protect my clients hair, Traylor said. You put it obefore applying any kind of heat to the hair.
Other ways to avoid damaging the hairs delicate cuticles inclshampooing with mild products, using conditioner, and skippindrying occasionally. Most people wash and style their hair everday, so they really need to be using the right products, Traylorsaid. If you have coarse, curly hair, try skipping shampoo for acouple of days. Your hair will look so much better if you stop strping the natural oils away.
Traylor recommends consulting with your stylist before tryinany new thermal device. You have to use these tools correctly oyou can seriously damage your hair, he explained. VIP

Blow it Out
Any good blowout starts with the foundation.Get a good haircut.
Begin with clean, conditioned hair.
Apply product thoroughly from root to end. Section the hair in two inch pieces. Starting at the bottom, blow about 60 percent of the
moisture from the rst section. Use a round brush to control the hair while you aim the
nozzle of the dryer onto the brush.
To achieve volume, hold the brush at the crown of the head.To straighten, elongate the hair away from the scalp withthe brush.
Repeat, going in two inch sections toward the crown ofthe head.
After the hair is set, remove the nozzle from the dryer and
tousle the hair to make it look natural and lived-in. Use a nishing spray, aiming short bursts of the product at
the roots only. This will hold volume at the crown while
allowing movement at the ends. Use a small amount of spray shine all over the hair to close
the cuticle down and avoid frizz.

String the snow peas and blanch in boilingwater for 30 seconds. Chill in ice water, drain, and dry thoroughly. Split the pods lengthwise,so that you have enough separate halves foreach shrimp. Wrap a pea pod around eachshrimp, and fasten by piercing with a roundnatural wood toothpick. Serve cold or at roomtemperature.

The Wow Factor
This time of year, you
an expect your holiday partyo be just one of many commit-ments on your guests calendars.
o, how do you turn up the sizzleactor for your party?
Tabetha Franklin, owner of MainDish, feels the pressure to wow guests
ach season. Because of my career, eople always expect me to come up
with something new and delicious,Franklin explained. So, I had to cre-
te ways to stand out and be dier-nt.
Franklin decided to steer clear ofheavy holiday staples, like ham and
urkey, and stick to a themed holidaypread full of items her guests wontikely find anywhere else such as bar-ecue shrimp and chowder. Peoplelready have enough traditional mealsuring the holidays, Franklin said.Picking something unusual is alwaysnice change from the norm.

Coffee Bar
Instead of dessert, create a coffee bar, allowingguests to customize with various syrups, creams, and whipped toppings. Its the perfect time of
year for coffee and your guests will love this funway to enjoy a non-alcoholic beverage.
Select and prepare two different holiday-a-vored coffees (Tabetha recommends pumpkinspice or toffee) and put into thermal carafes. Also brew a pot or two of fresh regular coffee.Arrange a variety of avored creamers orsyrups (available at coffee shops or at thegrocery) for guests to create custom blends.Make a quick mocha by putting a packet ofhot chocolate mix into a cup, then add-ing coffee and stir. Top any with whippedcream for that special nish.

ENTWINING TRADITIONS
We understand the importance ofincreasing understanding and respect.
I think thats what motivates Jews.
Joshua Taub, rabbi of Temple Emanuel
8 December 2010 | THEVIPMAG.COM
When Mary andJoseph finally arrived inJerusalem after their longand tiresome journey, they were told there wasno room at the inn. Theinnkeeper was sorry, but
the weary couple had tofind some other place.
Paula ONeal, executive director of SomeOther Place, knows how the parents of Jesusprobably felt. She and her staff help peopleevery day who have nowhere else to turn. ThBeaumont-based ecumenical mission meetsthe unmet emergency needs of local residentwho are told by other organizations to seekhelp elsewhere in other words, at someother place. And, as with most charities, the mission relies on the help of >>

olunteers. This is a place where volunteers come together tout their faith to work, whatever their faith may be, ONeal said.
People of all faiths become partners to help at Some OtherPlace, but one of the best examples of an interfaith partnerships the relationship the mission has with members of Temple
Emanuel. On Christmas Day, Jewish volunteers help welcomeuests and serve the holiday meal so Christian staff members and
olunteers can have the day off to spend with their families. To me, its such a wonderful example of how people of
ifferent faiths can come together for a common good, ONealaid of the temple volunteers who have been helping out at
Christmas since the 1980s.
For Joshua Taub, rabbi ofTemple Emanuel, Jewish peoplevolunteering on Christmasday is nothing new. Accordingto the rabbi, it happens allover America. Weve alwayswanted to do our part, he saidof the Jewish community. Itsjust another day to Jews, but itmeans everything to Christians,he explained, so it just makessense. Its a logical thing, hesaid. Were giving them the
opportunity to be home withtheir families.
Taubs parents owned aretail pharmacy that was openChristmas Day, and he and hissiblings would take over forthe employees so they couldhave the day off. He thought
that was fair since his fathedidnt go to work on Jewishholidays. The rabbi doesntsee a contradiction in beingsupportive of Christians andtheir faith. We understandthe importance of increasinunderstanding and respect,he said. I think thats whatmotivates Jews.
Cynthia Wolf, chairwomaof the temples Social JusticCommittee, agrees. Shes
volunteered for charitablecauses most of her life, including working with herfather when he sold Christmtrees for the Optimist Club.My daddy knew howimportant they are in the hoof our Christian neighbors ahow important the funds raat that time were in helpingboys, she said.
Wolf and her troop ofvolunteers serve food to theguests at Some Other Place Christmas Day, but they also
provide blankets and snackfoods for the adults and giftthe children. Another projeshe spearheads is the collecof necessities for the seasocitizens in the missionsMeals-on-Wheels program, which delivers meals to sencitizens in their homes. Wecollect such items as new flethrows, toiletries, flashlighthealthy snacks and cans of fand fill the bags, which we aprovide, she said. It is sosatisfying to see how many
the faith-based organizationsend the necessities and giftitems to Some Other Place tare designated for the seasocitizens.
Why do Wolf and otherJews feel so strongly aboutvolunteering, especiallyacross faith lines? Withinthe Torah of our faith are thvalues that define us, sheexplained. We are commanto live mitzvot to do acts oloving kindness, to help thowho cannot help themselves
and to do it in such a way asto provide them dignity. Shnoted a passage in the BookDeuteronomy: Justice, justicshall you pursue! We go foto do that at home and beyoWolf said.
ONeal is thankful forthe temples fellowship andsupport, saying, It makes mfeel so good to be with peopwho are different from me ato find out how much we arealike. VIP

W
hen visitors step intoRichard Gagns wealthadvisement office inBeaumont, they mayexperience a dislocating,were-not-in-Texas-anymore feeling.
Welcomed by the cool
blue furnishings andsandstone Cape Cod orna-
ments a nod to Gagns childhood in Fall River, Massachu-setts the ambience of the oce shifts to an unexpected hue, tinted with the rusty reds, royal blues, and energetic orangesof another, exotic culture. A rustic sign says simply, Greet-ings from Uganda.
Therein lays the surprising journey of Richard Gagn, anunassuming, studious man, who developed a whole new life inthe jungles of Africa.
More than Meets the EyeGagn is not someone youd expect to have such an adven-
turous life. Hes prone to pausing in thought, speaks intentlywith measured sentences and exudes the serious diligence of
someone who values the weight of stewardship. He is, in fact, the stereotypical financialand investment analyst.
But when he speaksof Africa, and his tonebecomes steeped withpassion and his eyeswater, the dichotomy ofthe dcor suddenly makessense. Thats when yourealize that Gagn is notat all whom you believedhim to be. He is much, much more.
A Higher CallingPerhaps it was always meant to be.I was born with a deep desire to make a positive dierence
in the life of a child, Gagn described. I believe that is whatI was destined to do.
Gagn began searching for meaning in his life at an earlyage. In 1961, while in high school, Gagn became a junioratein the Brothers of Christian Instruction a Catholic order
vowed to care for and instruct some of the poorest people inthe world. Had he continued with the Brothers of ChristianInstruction instead of branching out into the business world,it would have likely brought him to Kisubi, Uganda a lushlybeautiful, yet depressingly destitute community near LakeVictoria, which serves as headquarters for the Orders educa-tional training facilities and schools.
Instead, Gagn did move forward in business, accumulatingawards and accolades for his achievements and founding hisown 38-year-strong financial planning business. Throughouthis career, Gagn regularly donated money to the Brothers ofChristian Instruction, hoping to alleviate financial strain on analready humble organization.
In 2000, Gagn learned that all his donations were beingsent elsewhere. Visiting with Brother Francis Blouin of the
Order, he learned that his contributions had been forwardedto Uganda. Sensing his annoyance, BrotherBlouin encouraged Gagn to travel with himto Kisubi to see for himself what had beendone with the money.
The Trip of a LifetimeThe trip, made in 2003, proved to be a
life-altering one.I was living with some of the poorest
people in the world, Gagn recalled. Yet,it was so rewarding. Though I had alwaysstriven to make a dierence, I saw that Icould really make a bigger impact in thelives of the people I met there.

Gagn saw that his donations had built a water purificationplant for a deeply impoverished area in Kisubi. He also trav-eled with Brother Blouin across the Ugandan nation, cultivat-ing a deep connection and understanding of the fascinating
culture.Touched and determined, Gagn began quietly seeing to
the immediate needs of some of the worlds most poverty-stricken individuals making donations to improve schoolsfacilities, paying the salaries of local teachers, planting trees, building better facilities and erecting a critical pit-latrine sys-tem. Brother Blouin even negotiated a deal with a charitableorganization in Montreal, Canada Terres Sans Frontieres, orCountries without Borders. This organization began matchingGagns donations, increasing the impact of each dollar.

Orphans. Most of the orphans walk a half a mile to schoolfrom their villages. This walk is quite deadly. According toJames Kyeyune, the schools director, it is not uncommon tolose one child per day to tribal kidnappers seeking to steal the

children for human sacrifice. Without family to protect them, the orphans are prime targets for this barbaric practice somesuperstitiously believe brings good fortune and a bountifulharvest.
I became attached to these children, Gagn said. Someof them are five years old and theyre caring for their youngersiblings because malaria killed their parents. Many of themare in despair. I simply cannot let them down. He visits them
frequently and, when he arrives, they flock to him, anxiousto show him what theyve accomplished in his absence. Theyeven named a schoolhouse Richard House in his honor.
When I hear their laughter in the schoolyard, it is thesame laughter I hear when I see children playing in America,Gagn explained. These children they are the same. Yet,in Africa, their needs are more critical and immediate. Theirneeds are life and death.
Gagn is currently working diligently to raise $1.25 millionfor the Mbabaali Memorial School for Orphans, enough moneyto rebuild the orphanage next to the school, eliminating thatdeadly walk home each night, as well as a protective wall tosecure the school from murderous kidnappers. Though theprice tag is steep, hearing Richard Gagn speak with hope andenthusiasm, you know he will make it happen.
These children, though they have so much responsibilityand have experienced so much, live every day to the fullest,Gagn said. They have hopes and dreams, just like any child.I find that most people have given up on Africa, but we simplycant give up on it. If we can educate these children and showthem how to make changes in their country, that will be thesolution for Africa. We must never give up.
Whether walking the hot and dusty roads of Uganda ordressed in tailored, designer suits as he attends the needs ofhis clients, one thing is for sure. Richard Gagn will not giveup on the children in Africa.
After all, it is his destiny.

Kara Hawthorne leads this yearsA Very Merry Main Street Market
F
or Kara Hawthorne, Christmas is a year-round event. As the chairwoman of the Ju-nior League of Beaumonts annual A VeryMerry Main Street Market, Hawthorne andher committee have spent months planningChristmas decorations, choosing vendorsand lining up prizes and donations. All herhard work will pay o this December 2-4,when thousands of shoppers will flood the
Beaumont Civic Center, searching for thaterfect Christmas gift. Now in its 15th year, Main Street Market is the only fundraiser
held by the Junior League of Beaumont, a volunteer organizationhat supports many local charities. All of Main Street Marketsrofits go directly to supporting the community projects that theunior League funds, Hawthorne explained. Projects like the
Family Resource Center Summer Camp, Baptist Hospitals Chil-rens Unit, the Beaumont Childrens Museum all of these phi-
anthropies are supported by our Main Street Market Event.Hawthorne, who works as a public relations planner, first
oined the Main Street Market Committee as the public relationshairwoman. Last year, she helmed the event for the first time, mplementing new ideas with an eye towards profit, resulting in
Main Street Market that raked in double the earnings of previ-
us years. We talked a lot about how we could expand the eventnd publicize it more eectively, Hawthorne said. This year,Hawthorne expects more vendors and more shoppers to makehis Main Street Market the most successful yet. We hope to
have around 6,500 shoppers come through that weekend, Haw-horne said.
As Hawthorne was gearing up for the count-down to A VeryMerry Main Street Market, VIPsat down with her to learn a little
it about the woman behind this years event.

Main Street Market puts me in the
holiday spirit! We begin planning for the
Market in January, so we are celebrating
nd planning for the holidays the entire
ear. I should leave my holiday decora-
ions out all year. The sad truth is that by
Main Street Market, my Halloween deco-
ations are usually still displayed. This
ear I decided to change it up and skip
ecorating for Thanksgiving. I went from
Halloween directly to Christmas decora-
ions. It has put our family in the holiday
pirit, and after the Market I will take a
ew days to rest.
Favorite Christmas carol?
enjoy all Christmas carols. I am guilty of
istening to holiday music throughout the
ear. There is something about Christmas
arols that puts me in the holiday spirit.
White lights ormulti-colored?
love white lights and lots of them!
What is the bestuse for a fruitcake?
I have seen where some cities have a
fruitcake chunking event where you can
take your fruitcake to the landll and put
it on a catapult. I would like to see that
implemented in our area. Maybe that is an
event we should consider adding to MainStreet Market.
Favorite holiday tradition?
I enjoy spending time with family and
friends during the holidays. It is a very
special time of year that reminds me how
lucky I am to have such a wonderful fam-
ily and amazing friends.
Whatholiday chore would you pay

I would pay for someone to clean up my
house after the holidays. I feel sad when I
put away the decorations. I look forward
to the holidays all year and I feel sad
when they are over. While I put away the
decorations, I begin looking forward to
the next holiday season.

Its a Wonderful Life.
If you were a Christmas tree,
howwould youdecorateyourself?
I go overboard with Christmas decora-
tions! We have several Christmas trees at
our home during the holidays. Each tree
represents my personality. They have lots
of lights and hundreds of ornaments. I
would guess if I was a tree, I would deco-
rate myself like the trees at my home. I
would be bright and colorful and covered

will use topiaries made of living materials and sponsoractivities highlighting the making of Earth-friendlyornaments.
We are not cutting trees for our Christmas trees, Hokesaid. Instead, we are using live trees that will be planted afterChristmas. When I was a child, we used this method and, atmy old home, there is a forest of these trees. It was a greattradition.
Hoke noted the great Christmas-tree debate: Live or fake which one is more environmentally friendly? Some people, most notably tree growers, claim that buying a real tree is
more Earth-friendly because when one tree is chopped down, another tree is planted in its place. The dead tree can beturned into mulch after the holidays. The fake-tree supportersbelieve they are saving real trees that might not be replaced. If you can get it to last a long time, theres no debate, he saidof fake trees. You have to be practical. Hoke promotes thelive-tree idea: Buy one with roots and plant it after Christmas.Thats a wonderful green idea, he said.
Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center is the firstproject in Texas and the 50th project in the world to earnthe U.S. Green Building Councils Platinum Certification forLeadership in Energy and Environmental Design for New
Construction. The designation verifies that the design andconstruction of Shangri La reached the highest green buildingand performance measures.
Hokes advice for going green is simple. Do the easy thingsfirst, he said, such as using compact fluorescent light bulbs. Then you can tackle the harder things.
Beaumont resident Adrian Farris reuses gift bags andsometimes doesnt wrap presents at all. It gets to be sort ofa joke how many years a bag can circulate or whose name ison the tag from last year, she said. We also rarely use theextra gift tags and just write the recipients name directly on
the bag. One year, Farris made recycling bins and gave themto her youngest son, Reid. He really enjoys doing our ownhome recycling center, she said.
Recycling will be easier for Beaumont residents now thatcurbside recycling is back. And as for discarding Christmastrees, the City of Beaumont and many cities in SoutheastTexas have a recycling program where trees are picked up andground into mulch for public landscaping projects. Beaumontresidents are also welcome to get compost at the municipallandfill on Saturdays.
With a little effort, you can make a big difference when itcomes to making your Christmas green. VIP

Here are some tips to keep your holiday green:
Wrap gifts in recycled wrapping paper, newspaper or grocery bags.
Save gift bags and reuse them.
Make decorations from recycled materials.
Use energy-efcient LED lights.
Buy a live tree in a pot with roots and plant it after Christmas.
Keep a small tree as a house plant and decorate it during the holiday season.
Buy quality wooden toys and games that last longer rather than cheap plastic toys that break easily and end up in landlls too quickly.

preserving your standard of living in the face of market downturns, inatio

57% of those surveyed cited rising health care costs as their number-one
concern. And if youre in the younger half of those surveyed, a lack of
traditional pensions and Social Security and Medicare safety nets is proba
also on your mind.
Experts agree that wealth alone is no guarantee of retirement security;saving too little runs up and down the income scale and wealth scale, say
Olivia S. Mitchell, an insurance and risk-management professor at Wharton
Comfortable living inevitably translates to spending. Though the wealthy

also spend a lot to keep the lifestyle they enjoy going.
Reasons forconcern
Your retirement isnt likely to be the same as it would have been 50 years
ago. The old adage was that you needed 80% of your current income
when you retirebut nearly half of the 1,800 millionaires surveyed by the

even be thinking of working indenitely, at least part-time, in order to stay
engaged and support a comfortable lifestyle. Also, your life expectancy ha
increased, even from just a generation ago. Determining your retirementgoals is a complex processone that means taking the time to gure out
what it is you really want now and down the road.
