While Charles Friant created the role of Narsès in the 1923 Opéra-Comique premiere of Le Hulla, Marcelin was the tenor lead in a 1926 revival there, about the time this uncommon record was made. Lt. rubbing, 2. $30.00.

Pressed from orig. private HMV matrices. Label side one autographed by Marchesi. Just about 1-2. $40.00.

FRANCESCO MARCONI [t] 1425. 10” Red G&T 52788 [Con366]. RIGOLETTO: Questa o quella (Verdi). Piano acc.

Salvatore Cottone. Marconi enters early, hops about in a couple of other places and can’t figure out when to enter for the second verse, so Cottone continues vamping until they make contact. Wonderful voice, but one wonders how he managed his musical entrances on stage! 1.5 mil stylus suggested as with most “Con” matrix G&Ts. IMs, small lbl. stkr. No heavy blasting but sounding wear and “edginess” in spots. 4, but it generally looks quite a bit cleaner. $175.00.

ISABEL MARENGO [s]. Buenos Aires, 1894-1977. She studied at the Conservatory Carlos Lopez Buchardo and made her debut at the Teatro Colón, 1926, as Micaëla in Carmen. At least one source indicates, however, that she appeared in Chile a year earlier. Her European debut was at the Rome Teatro Reale, 1929, where she was Suzel in Mascagni’s Amico Fritz, Lauretta in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and Micaëla in Carmen. Most of her career was in Argentina, where she is remem- bered as one of that country’s major artists.

ALICE MARTURELL [s]. The short career of this talented soprano seems to have been due to her involvement in managerial politics. In 1924, she participated in the (certainly belated) first production of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte at the Deutsche Oper, Berlin, with tenor Jaro Dworsky and bass Emmanuel List, Leo Blech conducting. She also shared the role of Mimì (Puccini’s La Bohème) with Meta Seinemeyer and also performed Agathe in Der Freischütz. Evidently she was romantically involved with a member of the Board of Directors of the Deutsche Opera who was engaged in a secret merger attempt with the Berlin Volksoper. Marturell acted as a go-between. The merger failed in late 1924 and on Dec. 24th, the City of Berlin stepped in, took over management of the theater, and formed the Städische Oper Berlin. Marturell was never subsequently engaged by any Berlin theater. -VRCS CD Notes, 2002.

CATHERINE MASTIO [s]. Paris, 1875 - ? . A student of Piffaretti, Mastio was a graduate of the Paris Conservatoire. Her debut was at the Brussels Théâtre de la Monnaie as Inez in l’Africaine and she remained with the company through 1898. From 1899-1907 she was a featured artist at the Paris Opéra-Comique and from 1908 at the Paris Opéra. She also appeared elsewhere as a guest. Mastio’s repertoire was extensive and included roles such as Micaëla, Mimí, Louise, Violetta, Philine in Mignon, Bertha in Le Prophète and Elsa, as well as several world creations. Her few and extremely rare records display an exceptionally attractive voice with superb control of dynamic shadings.

1935. 10” Blk. Zonophone X-1295. LAKMÉ: Recit. et Pourquoi dans les grands bois (Delibes). Announced by Mastio. Piano acc. 90 rpm. Few minor lbl. marks and (harmless) rough areas on the blank outer margin. There is some ticking and clicking first ½” or so (for which I can’t spot any reason). It is otherwise quiet and an exceptionally clear recording for 1902. Surface is remarkably clean, cons. 2. $400.00.

GINO MATTERA [t]. Taranto, 1923-Rome, 1960. A pupil of tenor Manfredo Polverosi, Mattera made his debut as Alfredo in La Traviata at the Rome Teatro Adriano in 1947. He subsequently sang in other Italian theaters and in 1948 was offered a film contract. It appears that the remainder of his short life (37 years) was mainly in films (sometimes as a non-singing actor) with occasional concerts and television appearances, and he appeared often on RAI (Radio Italiana) operatic broadcasts. In 1953, Mattera visited Australia, making there one of his few appearances outside of Italy.

She is mentioned as having made a debut at La Scala in 1915 (although she does not appear in the Titori’s La Scala “Cronologia”) before returning to America. Here she toured with Caruso as an assisting artist in various of his concert appearances from 1917 to 1919 and in 1920 made her Metropolitan Opera debut in a Sunday night concert. José Moriche made his debut at the Teatro Real in Madrid (1918-1919) as Count Almaviva in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, obtaining a resounding success. Looking for a career in the Americas, he moved first to Cuba in hopes of continuing his operatic work and then to New York City. There, he soon found great popularity as a recording artist, singing mostly popular Spanish and Mexican songs. He made dozens of discs in the U.S. from 1922 well into the 1930s. Moriche's fame was so great that he was selected to appear with Carlos Gardel in the film "El Tango en Broadway" as an actor with a leading role. In the last years of his life, Moriche operated a restaurant on Long Island (the town not mentioned), named "Caruso," entertaining the clientele with Romanzas, operatic arias, and popular songs.

However, at the age of eighteen, his love of music overcame him and he ran away to Vienna, arriving penniless. He survived there as a Cantor and through a small stipend provided by an art loving Baroness. As an opera singer, he gained experience in Rotterdam, Breslau and St Petersburg. His success led to seasons at the Metropolitan Opera and the Covent Garden Royal Opera. At the Met (1898-1910) he was heard in 54 roles, including such parts as the Dutchman (Flying Dutchman), Monterone and Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Wolfram (Tannhäuser), Silvio (Pagliacci), and the Commendatore (Don Giovanni), to mention only a few. He was also a guest at the Vienna Hofoper (1902) and in the U.S. He was also remembered for his work at Covent Garden. In later years he became an esteemed teacher and encouraged the development of funds for, in particular, needy students, remembering his own vicissitudes in his formative student years.

ADELINA PATTI [s]. In a 1907 magazine interview, Adelina Patti offered her thoughts on the music of Richard Strauss and Wagner. Patti attended a production of Salome in Paris that year. The summation of her commentary was: “After hearing Salome, even those who don’t like Wagner will exalt him”. As to Wagner she was much more sympathetic. “I adore Wagner … [but] … I never met [him] because he refused to know me. … And the reason was that I refused to create the part of Kundry in Parsifal. Wagner often heard me sing at Covent Garden and told my brother-in-law, Maurice Strakosch, that he was writing the part of Kundry for me. But I thought there was a great deal of shrieking to do in the part and [I] refused to sing it. Wagner was furious and never would meet me. All of which has never prevented me from lauding his music to the skies.”

ULDERICA PERSICHINI [s]. Likely Sicilian and probably born in the early 1880s, she seems to have made her debut in Prato, 1903, and to have sung at least through 1909. Her repertoire included such roles as Gilda, Rosina, Violetta, Marguerite, Amina and Mimì, as well as Etera in Giannetti’s long forgotten Festa di Purim. After marrying Sicilian artist Giuseppe Rondini (1885-1957), she retired. A biographical sketch of Rondini indicates that Persichini died in the mid-1930s, after which Rondini went into a deep depression. In 1938 he entered the Monastery of Grottaferrata, where he remained the rest of his life.

She appeared with the Bremen (Germany) Opera in 1927 and earlier with the Montreal Opera. One of her engagements in NY was at the Gotham Theater where mention was made of “her pleasing voice and magnetic personality”. ANTONIO PINI-CORSI [b]. Zadir, Croatia, 1858-Milano, 1918. His debut was in Cremona, 1878, as Dandini in La Cenerentola (Rossini). Subsequently he appeared in most of the world’s leading opera houses in both buffo and serious roles. Among his world creations were Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff (La Scala, 1893), Schaunard in Puccini’s La Bohème (Teatro Regio, Torino, 1896). Other opera premieres included parts at the Met in Damrosch’s Cyrano and Victor Herbert’s Madeleine in English. The disc below is of particular interest as Pini-Corsi was composer of the song side one which Caruso also recorded as one of his three Pathé recordings. Side two is an excerpt from Falstaff, although this is from the title role rather than his world creation, Ford. He sings it twice, the second time as an encore, each verse followed by enthusiastic studio applause (as with creator Victor Maurel’s earlier Fonotipia recording).

RODOLPHE PLAMONDON [t]. Montréal, 1876-Montréal, 1940. Originally studying as a cellist in Canada, Plamondon further prepared in Paris in 1895-96 and played professionally while beginning voice studies. His singing career began rather auspiciously, including an 1897 concert in Windsor Hall, London, with Melba and the same year a church concert with organist Charles-Marie Widor and baritone Jean-Baptiste Faure. In the first decade of the 1900s he appeared in various operatic venues, including Monte Carlo, the Théâtre Antique in Orange (to an audience of over 12,000) the Paris Opéra, and so on. His repertoire included a number of relatively esoteric works, such as Rameau’s Castor et Pollus, Rubinstein’s The Demon and, during his career, over 250 performances of the Berlioz Damnation of Faust in both staged and concert performances. He seems to have left opera by the time of the First World War and concentrated on song recitals. He returned to Canada in the 1920s where he taught. Plamondon made a group of recordings in Canada for Starr around 1924, at least two of which were also issued by U.S. Columbia in addition to a few original Columbia matrices from the same period. I believe there is also one early recording on Odéon.

GEORGE RASELY [t]. St. Louis, MO, 1889-Lawrence, KS, 1965. His family moved to New England early on in George’s life, where his musical preparation took place (with Emil Mollenhauser). Rasely’s active musical career began with work as a church soloist with the Boston Old South Church. . This led to Broadway (debut as Nur-Al-Huda in Norton’s Chu Chin Chow, 1917), concert, oratorio, and opera, where he was a member of the Metropolitan Opera Company 1937-44. In addition he created the role of Schweiker von Gundelfingen in the U.S premiere (Philadelphia) of Strauss’s Feuersnot, 1927, and Mr. Scratch in Moore’s The Devil and Daniel Webster (1937). In 1949 he was in the premiere of Douglas Moore’s Decidedly Yours with the NY Philharmonic. From the 1920s through the ‘40s he was heard in well over a thousand radio broadcasts. He also appeared in England in musical theater productions. His only records, however, appear to have been one each for Lyraphone (USA) and Aeolian-Vocalion (England).

I made it necessary for her to return to the U.S. Here, her career was as a recitalist and in oratorio, as well as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New York Symphony and a number of other major orchestras. MARIA ROGGERO [s]. Torino, 1886 - ? . “Forgotten Opera Singers” (Internet) provides her debut in Mignon in Vicenza, 1909. There was apparently another Maria Roggero, an American named Mary Rogers, who sang as Mary or Maria Roggero in Italy. She was successful in Genoa, 1918, as Maddelena in Andrea Chenier and had sung at the Liceo in Barcelona in 1917. These details come from a 1918 report in an American music magazine (the Musical Courier, I believe). I’m guessing that the few Roggero 1914 Gramophone recordings (including the duet below) are by the Torino Maria.

FRANCIS ROGERS [b]. Roxbury, MA, 1870-New York City, 1951. Rogers studied at the New England School of Music and then in Italy with Luigi Vannuccini. Returning to New England, his first appearance was as a recitalist in Boston, 1897. While making a brief early excursion into opera, it was as a recitalist, in oratorio, and as a soloist with major U.S. orchestras that were his chosen stages of expression. He toured the U.S. 1909-1910 as assisting artist to soprano Marcella Sembrich. In 1921 he christened New York’s Town Hall by being the first to sing there. Rogers received exceptional reviews for his recitals by the leading critics of the period including Horatio T. Parker, W. J. Henderson, and Richard Aldrich. His later years were spent as a teacher, including Juilliard (1924-1947) and the Yale School of Music. He appears to have made only one record, that for Columbia in 1907.

FELIPE ROMITO [bs-b]. Rosario, Sante Fe, Argentina, 1893-1962. His debut was at the Teatro Coliseo in Buenos Aires as Colline in La Bohème. In 1920 he appeared at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires in further Puccini Operas: La Fanciulla del West and Gianni Schicchi. After additional training in Italy, he was heard in leading roles at the opera houses of Florence, Venice, Rome, Naples and Milan. In 1923, he was in Paris, singing with the Russian opera troupe which Maria Kuznetsova-Benois had just founded. Here he was admired above all as Boris Godounov, a part which he also sang in 1932 in Buenos Aires with great success, and which he sang in Russian. He also appeared in Germany, Venice, and in 1934 La Scala in the Italian premiere of de Falla’s La Vida Breve. From 1932-1955 Romero was a member of the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. During the postwar years he made guest appearances in France (among other things in 1946 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris), Italy and Sweden. After his retirement, he worked as an opera director.
