Brooks County Schools… Learners Today… World Leaders Tomorrow…
On February 19th, Brooks County High School students along with Representative
and Counselor, Jessica Carter toured Lowes Distribution Center through the
Vocational Rehabilitation Center in Valdosta. The students toured the facility and
learned about job opportunities as well as how Lowes assists students in the local
community with opportunities to work at the facilities. Lowes Distribution Center
has partnered with the Vocational Rehabilitation Center in providing career
opportunities for high school students with employment. Picture: Lakeisha Brown,
Wanda Thompkins, Darren Anderson and Trevius Cooks.

CTAE,” to display in the school; provided gifts for
each CTAE teacher; provided students with WGTC
souvenirs; and provided an opportunity for CTAE
students to win a set of Skullcandy headphones.
Toriano Porterfield was the winner for BCHS.

Right: Our own Ricardo Munoz (Class of 2011) spoke to
the Georgia Senate on February 10th during their
legislative session regarding Senate Bill 44. Ricardo is one
of the many immigrants accepted into the Obama
administration’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals
program, or DACA. That program grants temporary
deportation deferrals and work permits to immigrants who
were illegally brought to the U.S. as children. Georgia’s
University System bars DACA recipients from paying in-
state college tuition rates, which are several thousand
dollars below the out-of-state rates. Ricardo is currently a
senior at Armstrong State University and will be speaking
for the right to pay in-state college tuition. This is a great
honor for Ricardo. He has experienced first-hand the
struggle to pay for a college education. Ricardo’s next goal
is to attend medical school.
On February 24, nine Brooks County Middle School

Quitman Elementary School hosted their first Saturday School Session for the 2014-15 academic year from 10:00 to
12:00 on Saturday, February 21, 2015. Parents/guardians, students, and staff from Grades K-5 began the morning
with light refreshments in the Media Center where they were provided an informational PowerPoint presentation
along with grade-level appropriate hand-outs and participated in enlightening conversations about the Common Core
Standards, curriculum/expectations for the various grade levels, Georgia Milestones Assessments, helpful tips on how
to help with homework, and useful internet sites. Afterwards, everyone moved to break-out sessions in the classrooms
where they were involved in demonstration lessons completing typical learning activities together, “make and take”
packets, and fun interactive games using SMART Board technology. Parents and students took advantage of the
opportunity to spend time together as a family learning more about what a typical school day at QES is actually like.
The next Saturday School Session will be held for Grades 3-5 students and parents/guardians on March 14, 2015.
Above: Quitman Elementary School raised $3,
965.00 during the school’s annual Jump Rope
for Heart activities. Students enjoyed various
activities during the JRFH fundraiser on
February 12th. Jump Rope For Heart is an
educational fund development program that is
co-sponsored by SHAPE America and the
American Heart Association. The program
promotes physical education and provide
children with the knowledge of heart disease
and stroke while raising funds for
cardiovascular disease research, stroke research,
and health education. Each year more than 7
million children participate in a JRFH event,
uniting parents, students and the community in
an important cause. By participating in these
events, students are given the opportunity to
contribute to the fight against heart disease and
stroke by raising money for research and
education.
