Dear Friends,

This is the second installment in the three-part series on the work of our denomination’s Commission on the Way Forward.

What is Christ’s way forward for doing mission and ministry in the worldwide United Methodist Church? That is the question bishops pondered during their February meeting in Dallas as they received an updated report from the Commission on a Way Forward. In the report, the Commission shared with the Council of Bishops three sketches that carry forward many of the values and principles that were presented to the bishops at their meeting in November, 2017.

Here is a summary of the three sketches.

AFFIRMATION OF CURRENT BOOK OF DISCIPLINE

This model affirms the current Book of Discipline language and places a high value on accountability.

ONE CHURCH MODEL

The One Church Model gives churches the room they need to maximize the presence of United Methodist witness in as many places in the world as possible. The One Church Model provides a generous unity that gives conferences, churches, and pastors the flexibility to uniquely reach their missional context in relation to human sexuality without changing the connectional nature of The United Methodist Church.

MULTI-BRANCH: ONE CHURCH MODEL

This model is grounded in a unified core that includes shared doctrine and services and one Council of Bishops, while also creating different branches that have clearly defined values such as accountability, contextualization and justice. The five U.S. jurisdictions would be replaced by three connectional conferences, each covering the whole country, based on theology and perspec-tive on LGBTQ ministry (i.e. progressive, contextual, traditional branches). Annual conferences would decide which connectional conference to affiliate with; only local churches who choose a branch other than the one chosen by their annual conference would vote to join another conference.

The Council of Bishops met in May and voted by an overwhelming majority to share the work done by the Commission on a Way Forward on the three plans and to recommend the One Church Plan. The One Church Plan will be placed before the 2019 General Conference for legislative action.

Next month: Presentation of the One Church Plan to the Cal-Pac Annual Conference in June.

In Christ,

Rev. Martha Wingfield

Easter has passed and the Holy Spirit has come. That means summer is also on the horizon, with VBS planning in full swing. Lots happening.

Vespers will continue, along with Tuesday evening classes. My deep appreciation to Rev. Jim Seaton and Rev. Jim Standiford for their leadership during April and May on Tuesday evenings as we examined the basics of our faith.

In June we will continue that examination by looking at theories of atonement - “at-one-

ment” - with God. There are several ways of examining our reconciliation with self and God and on June 5th and 19th we will examine two of these theories. These classes will be in room 101 after Vespers at 6:30 pm.

On June 12th, the United Methodist Women will present a seminar on human trafficking. Guest speaker Fernando Huerta, Commander of the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force, will help raise public awareness about the problem of sex trafficking in our city, bring to light the plight of sex trafficking victims and teach us how to avoid negative and

potentially dangerous situations. This is a district-wide event and will be in the Sanctuary after Vespers at 6:30 pm.

On June 26th and July 3rd, I will be at the Claremont School of Theology. On June 26th, there will be Vespers but no class. On July 3rd, there will be no Vespers and no class. Our summer Faith in Film series will begin July 10th and we will view “Field of Dreams.”

It will be an exciting time and I look forward to seeing you all this summer.

Atonement: What It Is and What It Is Not

Tuesdays, June 5th and June 19th

6:30 pm in Room 101

The most recent Tuesday night class, Christianity 101, has helped us review the basic tenets of our faith. Part of that touched upon the theory of atonement - a means of reconciliation with God. It is often spoken of as “at-one-ment” with God, or how we are connected to God. These classes will examine the most prominent atonement theories.

The schedule for Tuesday evening classes in June is:

June 5th: Ransom and Penal Substitution Theory - Room 101

June 12th: Human Trafficking Seminar - Sanctuary

June 19th: Satisfaction Theory and Alternative Theories - Room 101 June 26th: Vespers Service Only. No Class. July 3rd: No Vespers or class.

This summer we will watch two very interesting programs that present different takes on spirituality. The first is the film, Field of Dreams, that uses baseball as a metaphor for a spiritual journey. Then we’ll watch an episode from the television show Northern Exposure called “Kadish for Uncle Manny.” As usual, we will watch the programs together one week and then discuss it the following week. If you want to watch the programs at home and just come for the discussion, that is fine. Invite a friend and join us for a time of journeying together.

The campaign officially kicked off on May 14th, with rallies and acts of civil disobedi-ence at over 30 state capitals and Washing-ton DC. “We are a new, unsettling force.” The Poor People’s Campaign is a continuation of the campaign that Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. started before he was killed. Poor and disenfranchised people, along with cler-gy and moral leaders nationwide, are driving

the Poor People’s Campaign to challenge the enmeshed evils of systemic racism, poverty, the war economy, ecological devastation, and our distorted national morality. It’s not about the Left or the Right; it’s about upholding moral values. You can participate from the comfort of your own computer. Mass meetings and teach-ins are live streamed on Sundays beginning at 3:00 pm, and on Tuesday beginning at 4:30 pm respectively. Visit www.poorpeoplescampaign.org to watch the live events or to learn more about the campaign. If you are a Facebook person, “like” the California Poor People’s Campaign for updates on what is happening in our state. I was excited to see

that the United Methodist Women are listed as endorsing partners for the campaign. Way to go UMW! This campaign is not about Left or Right it is about right and wrong. It’s about rediscovering what it means to love our neighbors. It is a multifaith and no faith movement. I plan to participate in the Sacramento rally on Tuesday, May 29th. I should have some good stories for our Thursday Teach-in on May 31st.

Here are the weekly themes for the Poor People’s Campaign:

Week 1 (May 13-19) Somebody’s Hurting Our People: Children, Women and People with Disabilities Living in Poverty

Week 2 (May 20-26) Linking Systemic Racism and Poverty: Voting Rights, Immigration, Xenophobia, Islamophobia, and the Mistreatment of Indigenous Communities

Week 3 (May 27-June 2) The War Economy: Militarism and the Proliferation of Gun Violence

Week 4 (June 3-9) The Right to Health and a Healthy Planet: Ecological Devastation and Health Care

Week 5 (June 10-16) - Livestream Hosted At San Carlos UMC, Sunday, June 10th, 3:00pm

Everybody’s Got the Right To Live: Education, Living Wages, Jobs, Income, Housing

Week 6 (June 17-23) A New and Unsettling Force: Confronting the Distorted Moral Narrative

Thursday May 31st, Wednesday, June 13th and Wednesday, June 20th, 6:00pm

San Carlos UMC will host Teach-ins in the Fireside Room. We will watch the best of the livestream teach-in from Washington DC and study the materials provided by the Poor People’s Campaign. Come ready for lively conversation.

Human Trafficking Awareness

Tuesday, June 12th 6:30pm Sanctuary

Children are forced into human trafficking every day. The San Carlos United Method-ist Women have invited Fernando Huerto, San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force Commander, to speak about the reality of human trafficking in San Diego County and offer strategies for safety. This is more than a parental concern — this is a community concern. Please come learn how to keep our community safe from human trafficking.

Grace and Peace.

I want to start by thanking you all for your kind words and support for my first time in the pulpit. It means a lot to me and reminds me of why Melissa and I chose this church so many years ago: the people. We have never seen a more welcoming and loving church and it is truly a blessing to be a part of it. Thank you.

I hope many of you took the time to enjoy the Festival String Quartet concert. What a wonderful group of people! Such a joy to be able to relax and enjoy some truly beautiful music. As a side note, these are the string players I use for our Christmas Concerts here at SCUMC. Thanks to Tim Pence and John Carman for their continued work on the Recital Concert Series. If anyone else would like to lend a voice to this endeavor please let one of us know. We’re always looking for new ideas!

Finally, please plan to attend the “Celebrate God and Country” concert and BBQ on Saturday, June 30, at 4:00 pm. The concert will feature the Choir, Bell Tones and

the Concert Band. It should last approximately one hour. Then we head up to the Fellowship Hall for a Santa Maria-style BBQ! Look for more details on page 8.

As always, thank you for your support of our Music Ministry program. It means so much to those who dedicate themselves to sharing their gift of music that you appreciate their hard work. We are truly blessed by God to have so much talent here at SCUMC!

Blessings,

A N T … Dear Prayers & Squares girls,

My beautiful quilt came just when I needed it most! I immediately felt those prayers of love and concern as I still do, now, when I am resting under it.

Thank you for all the time and love you put into this extraordinary ministry.

Love in Christ,

Brenda Lester

Dear Stitching Sisters,

Bob’s prayer quilt is so beautiful and he loves it. By placing it (corner to corner) it reaches his toes (always cold) and so he thinks his blankee is super.

In Christ,

Bob & Marion Eilers

Dear Prayer Quilters,

Receiving the prayer quilt, created and knotted by loving hands, means the world to me. I am so very grateful for the thoughts and prayers extended for me from my community of the faithful.

Love in Christ,

Duenise L. Shute

Dear Prayers and Squares quilters,

Thank you so much for the lovely quilt you gave me. I love the colors. I feel surrounded by loving concern and thoughtful prayers each time I use it. I am a quilter too, so I appreciate the skill and effort that has gone into the making of it. I cleaned out my stash this winter, giving Martha all my treasures, which she passed on to you. You can imagine my delight when I recognized the backing as one of my favorites.

Gratefully,

Jean Trotter

This year our award is going to a woman who is an active member of the UMW and a member of the New Entra Casa Circle. She is also the secretary for the UMW Board, and helps with the set-up as well as the clean-up for our various events, including the Candle-light Dinner. She is the first person to visit or call someone who is sick or to offer a ride to a doctor appointment, the grocery store, or wherever else she is needed. She has helped at New Entra Casa by providing meals and spending a few hours with the ladies during a period of time when they were short-staffed. This person is truly a Quiet Disciple. Please help to honor and present this award to our newest Quiet Disciple, Ann Rytting.

We need your help to feed hungry families this summer. Many people rely on the Good Neighbor Center for assistance, especially when their kids are not receiving meals at school. Our congregation is committed to providing one ton of food for the Good Neighbor Center in June. The one-ton thermometer will be on the patio every Sunday in June. We’re asking you to bring nutritious food items that are easy to prepare, families will use and kids will enjoy. Bring sizes that smaller families of 2-3 can use without spoilage as well as larger sizes. Drop off your food items at the scale for weigh-in. Please donate only sealed and unopened boxes and cans. Do not donate items that require refrigeration. For more information pick up a flyer at the Community Outreach table on the patio.

LARDER STARTERS for NEW ENTRA CASA

New Entra Casa, the residential facility for women ex-offenders founded by United Methodist Women forty-five years ago, is seeking items for its Larder Starter program. When residents graduate from New Entra Casa, they generally are starting their lives over from scratch. That’s where the Larder Starter comes in. New Entra Casa would like to give each woman the basics: dishes, pots and pans, small appliances, bedding, bath towels, etc. Can you help? If you have clean items in good

condition such as these, bring them to the church and drop them off at the Community Outreach table on any Sunday or drop them off at the church office Monday through Thursday. Please indicate that the items are for New Entra Casa. Thank you.

Lynne Calkins is a member of San Dieguito UMC and a nurse practitioner who needs old bras and dog collars for her mission work in Fiji. She needs all sizes of bras, especially large, and in all conditions. She also needs dog collars. If you would like to donate your old bras, or those dog collars (medium or large) that you no longer need, please bring them to the church and drop them off at the Community Outreach table and we will make sure they get to Lynne before her next trip to Fiji.

For more information about this interesting project, pick up a flyer at the Community Outreach table.

A note from Diane…

With summer almost here, I thought this devotional from Ministry to Children might be helpful:

The beach is another display of God’s handiwork. Build a sandcastle near the tide, on the sand. Build another one on a rock on higher land. Discuss the wise man and the foolish man. How does that apply to us? Sing “The Wise Man Built his House

upon the Rock.”

Fill a small container with sand. How many granules would you estimate are in there? Talk about Psalm 139:17-18, “How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand.”

Go on a hunt for seashells. Challenge your kids to find two that are exactly the same.

Find a recipe for a “sand/dirt dessert” and make it when you get home.

Summer Sunday School at the Movies

During the summer we will all be gathering together in the Fellowship Hall for a lesson-based children’s movie each Sunday morning. We will watch a 10 to 15-minute excerpt from the movie and then have a lesson with crafts and games based on the lesson. Here are the movies we will be watching during the month of June:

June 3 - “God wants us to be humble.” (Philippians 2:2-8) Movie: Cars

June 10 - “Working together, we can do great things.” (1Corinthians 12:5-7, 14-18 and 27) Movie: Toy Story

June 17 - “God goes to great lengths to find us!” (Romans 5:6-8) Movie: Finding Nemo

June 24 - “Greed and envy can get you into trouble.” (Genesis 27:1-40) Movie: Aristocats

Dear Congregation,

The big news is, of course, the confirmation of a number of kids from both the middle and high school youth programs on Sunday, May 20th! The kids worked hard for the last few months learning the principles of our faith and what it means to be a member of the United Methodist Church and I was truly proud to see so many kids welcomed into the church!

In other news, the youth praise band, Fireside, made their debut performance during Sunday services on May 6th. The band was excel-lent, especially considering that many of the members have never performed, or even played, music before joining the group! They were very well received and are starting work on new songs in preparation for another performance.

Lastly, the summer schedule is out, starting with an overnight event on June 21st to kick start what promises to be another brilliant summer!
