Friday 22nd April
Dear Parents / Carers,
Welcome back to our third and final term this academic year.
The summer term looks to be as packed and
exciting as ever. The last two weeks have been
particularly special as Bolingbroke Academy travels
further on our Key Stage Four & Five journey.
Last week we held our first ever Mock GCSE
examinations. Our Year 10 pupils showed real diligence as they
prepared and revised for these important exams. Thank you to
all the parents and carers who supported your child through this time. We look forward to seeing these results
and helping your child to reach their potential. I would also like to thank all the pupils in Year 7, 8 and 9 for sup-
porting Year 10 during this pressured time. You were incredibly respectful of these exams and I was impressed
by how considerate you were.
It has been fantastic to see the academy develop and plan for the future.
We are particularly excited by this week’s Sixth Form Experience Week which was
launched on Monday evening. Thank you to all the parents and carers who were able
to make it. This week has seen our Year 10 pupils really embrace Sixth Form life
and look forward to the opportunities they have available to them. We are currently
working on our Sixth Form prospectus which will be available in June.
As you know our school is expanding in various ways and I am delighted to tell you
that we have received over 1500 applications for 18 staff positions. We have had
some very high calibre applicants and I look forward to introducing the successful
candidates to you over the remaining weeks.
One final reminder to you that tomorrow is Bolingbroke Academy’s Annual Spring Fair from 12- 3:30pm. I hope
to see lots of you there. It looks like the weather is going to hold out for us and there are so many wonderful
attractions on offer from fabulous food, ice cream, games, face painting and much much more.

MOCK EXAMS AND 6TH FORM EXPERIENCE WEEK
By Mr Speight
Monday 18th April saw a really important event in the history of the academy with the launch of the Bolingbroke
Sixth Form with parents and carers. After a welcome from Ms Edis, Mr Speight presented parents and pupils with
the vision for the Sixth Form, its key features and some of the curricular and extra-curricular options that will be
available. The planning process has been ongoing for many months but at this really positive event the plans for the
Sixth Form really gathered momentum.
Starting the next day and following an intense week of mock exams, the
Class of 2019 have enjoyed a completely different few days in the shape of
Sixth Form Experience week. Pupils sampled what 6th Form learning will
be like, both in terms of routines, the way that learning is delivered and
structured in the classroom and in terms of subjects. Taster sessions in
Economics, Psychology and Philosophy supplemented the core and
preferences subjects which pupils are already studying.
Another aim of the week was to trial various dress codes as we establish the best model to adopt from
September 2017. Pupils wore uniform on Tuesday, casual clothes on Wednesday and smart professional wear on
Thursday. Pupils and staff have completed an evaluation of the week, part of which is a vote on which day’s dress
code best supported the ethos of the 6th form and a more adult way of learning.
We look forward to sharing the results of this survey with pupils and parents soon. The Sixth Form prospectus,
which will spell out in more detail the Sixth Form’s principles, policies and curriculum, will be published in June.
As we settle back down to normal routines after two very different weeks, it is clear that the Class of 2019 have
experienced a really intense and positive set of learning experiences that will stand them in good stead for success
for the rest of KS4 and beyond. Thanks to all staff for going the extra mile to give pupils these great opportunities.

VISIT TO THE LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS
MOVING ON CONFERENCE By Ms Robinson
On Wednesday 25th April a group of Year 7 pupils visited the LSE
to find out about University life. They took part in a number of
workshops including: A chance to familiarise pupils with university
and to ask the Student Ambassadors about their university
experience.
A Career tree activity gave pupils an opportunity to think about
their strengths and values and how they would translate to
future career options. A guided campus trail,
completing questions along the way and a planning the day out
task where pupils planned a hypothetical trip around London
was designed to build confidence and independence.
The most exciting part of the day was the graduation ceremony which saw Ms Ponge dressing up as the
University Chancellor to hand out the graduation certificates.

IN THE LIBRARY
“Noughts and Crosses” by Malorie Blackman
Malorie Blackman manages to turn racism on its head in this heart
wrenching story. Sephy, a cross, and Callum, a nought, have been
friends since childhood but the romance that blossoms there puts
everything at risk including their lives! They suffer as both sides be-
come more segregated, with Nought protests often turning ugly and
treatment of Noughts taking a turn for the worse.
I would recommend this book to readers who like to challenged. It is
a very thought provoking read.
SCHOOLS TO MARKET
CHUTNEY MAKING
WORKSHOP By Ms Robinson
Six of our Year 7 pupils took part
in a chutney making workshop this
week as part of a project run by
Schools to Market and Whole
Foods.
Poppy Ward, Yan McKeever, Claudia Sai, Florence
Davies, Molly-Rose Cook and Nikita Authier-Labille took
on leadership roles during the workshops as 3 groups of primary
school children visited Bolingbroke Academy to be part of the
project.
The pupils were very lucky to be under the instruction of Chef
Ruth Quinlan who gave them a masterclass in the process. By the end of the workshop the chutney
was bottled and the food technology room was filled with a delicious scent.
The pupils will continue this project by visiting a
farm and picking their own vegetables so they
can make their own chutney. They will then get
to sell their chutney at Wholefoods in the
summer.
Poppy & Molly look forward to tasting their Chutney

DUKE OF EDINBURGH -
ARCHAEOLOGY
By Ms Oliver
For the DoE cycle this half of the year, Bolingbroke
Academy is fortunate to be working with the Museum of
London and their archaeology department.
On Friday 15th April 2016, the pupils involved in the Ar-
chaeology DoE experienced their first archaeological dig.
The pupils excavated artefacts and then attempted to piece
together the information, in order to determine what the
items were, why they were used, where they from and
what they might tell us about peoples’ lives and
experiences in the past.
Over the next few weeks, pupils will do further excavation of their dig boxes. They will use their
findings to determine the time period, the place and the use of the items. The final week of DoE ar-
chaeology will involve the recreation of the site using iPads!
ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES
Thank you to Theo Rooney and Anita Ideh for their piano
performances in the assembly today.
Theo is undertaking Grade 3 and played Minuet by Scarlatti. Anita is
Doing Grade 1 and played The Lincolnshire Poacher and The Giants
Coming by Stephen Clarke.
The cast and crew have been working hard and the production is really
coming together. Tickets for Bugsy Malone go on sale tomorrow at the
Spring Fair. Don’t miss out on seeing Bolingbroke’s first ever theatrical
production. Playing over three nights on the 8th –10th of June these
performances are not to be missed.

MATHS CORNER 13
News from Maths this fortnight
Well done to our Year 10 pupils who have completed their first Mock Exam Week. They had the
experience of sitting two of the three papers that they will be sitting in June 2017. The pupils did us
really proud and we’ve got lots of feedback to share with them to help them prepare for the real
thing. We really like to celebrate mistakes in Maths – mistakes are a great way to learn and ensure
that our understanding of a topic is as good as it can be.
We’ve got lots of exciting events coming up over the next few weeks – including the UMKT Junior
Maths Challenge (year 7 and 8), a visit to the Bank of America Merrill Lynch(Year 9) and hosting the
year 10 ARK Maths Challenge. We’re really excited that there is an event for every year group this
term – check out future Maths Corners to hear more about our pupils’ experiences!
TT Rockstars
We’re re-launching Times Table
Rockstars for year 7 and 8 this
term. Pupils will be given new
booklets next week, with a set of
questions to be completed daily.
This should only take 3-4
minutes but there are also lots of
other activities in the booklet
and on www.ttrockstars.com
Parent Puzzle 12
In the spirit of exam week and celebrating misconceptions
(so we can learn from them!), this week’s Parent Puzzle is a
bit unusual.

PARA-ATHLETICS LONDON YOUTH GAMES By Mr Brooks
On Wednesday the 20th of April Bolingbroke Academy
competed in the Para-Athletics London Youth Games Qual-
ifier. The sun was shining, the track was dry and conditions
were perfect.
Bolingbroke competed in the
Field events first with all ath-
letes throwing the Javelin and
Shotput as well as participating
in the long jump. We had some outstanding results in each.
Josh Reilly, Andrew Luis and Ciaran Phillips excelled in the Javelin,
recording some outstanding results. In the Shotputt Ciaran was again
prominent in the leader boards. In the long jump Nathan Rose, Ella
Howarth, Amelia Marsland and Louie Hearn almost turned into
birds as they flew across the sandpit.
After lunch, batteries were recharged and the 100m races
began. Nathan Rose won his 100m race and outstand-
ing performances from Sonny Lloyd gave us great suc-
cess in that event. Finally, we came to the 200m race, the
final event. Oscar Collins and Mikey Scutt-
Thompson flew round the track and over the finishing
line leaving scorch marks in their wake.
All athletes competed exceptionally and it was a great
day. All should be proud of themselves and their brand
new shiny medals!
BROOMWOOD FOOTBALL TRIALS
Trials for Broomwood FC U13 League teams on Saturday 7 May, 3.45pm
We will be holding trials for next season's U13 squads on Saturday 7 May, at 3.45pm, on
Wandsworth Common (exact location to be decided).
This is for boys who will be in Year 8 next year. The trials are open to everyone, including current
Broomwood team players and members of the development squad. Please spread the word if you
know any other boys who would be interested - we would love to see as many players as possible.
The U13s play 11 aside in the League. The matches are on a Saturday, either morning or afternoon, in
various locations around south west London. The teams also train mid-week, either on Wandsworth
Common or on local astro pitches.

JUSTGIVING PAGES
FUNDRAISING FOR OUR SCHOOL Bolingbroke Academy is currently running Just Giving Campaigns to raise money for the
Music, Science and Art & DT Departments. Any donations will be greatly appreciated.
LOGIC PRO SOFTWARE FOR
MUSIC DEPARTMENT We are raising funds to purchase 'Logic Pro' to
assist in music lessons and to support GCSE pupils.
Logic Pro is a music writing software with
sophisticated tools for song writing, editing and
mixing. It includes a huge collection of instruments,
effects and loops, providing a complete toolkit for
music composition.
Apple’s free programme, Garageband, is currently used for composing and mixing music with our
Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils at Bolingbroke. However, as our GCSE pupils progress through their stud-
ies, with an increasing focus on composition coursework (40% of their total GCSE), there are a
number of extra features available with Logic that would really support our pupils to develop their
compositional and music technology skills further (such as instruments available, effects such as pan-
ning, and detailed note writing), and if we are able to procure Logic Pro it would be extremely ben-
eficial for those pupils wishing to explore music technology at a higher level.
To donate visit https://www.justgiving.com/Ark-Schools-Appeal-BolingbrokeMusicDepartment
EQUIPMENT FOR SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
In the preferences survey earlier on this year, a clear majority of
Year 10 pupils stated that, if selecting their A-level courses on that
day, they would select a Biology, Chemistry or Physics course.
We are proud of how enthusiastic our Year 10s are with regards to
science and continuing their scientific studies and we hope this
interest is increased further during the second half of their KS4
studies. We are determined to stay true to our original vision of de-
livering an engaging, relevant curriculum that shows pupils the im-
portance of science in the real world.
In order to deliver this curriculum we require assistance in raising
funds to purchase equipment and practical items in the areas of radi-
oactivity, electricity, static electricity and motion. The items include a
van der graff generator, radioactive materials and detectors, static electricity kits and
electrical circuits and components. We are confident that using this equipment will not only
inflame our pupils’ interest in the subject but also give them the best possible chance to achieve the
highest marks! Many thanks in advance for any donation that you can spare.

JUSTGIVING PAGES FUNDRAISING FOR OUR SCHOOL
3D PRINTER FOR ART
AND DT DEPARTMENT
This appeal is to raise money for the Art and
Design and Technology Department at Ark
Bolingbroke Academy. Out of the 841,000
private sector businesses based in London,
18% are in the technical activities sector and
15% are in the construction sector.
This has been recognised by the academy which is why future development plans are to concen-
trate sixth form subjects to have a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) focus. It is
essential that we provide our pupils with the right training for these areas of employment as they
are currently providing the greatest source of income to the UK’s economy. Companies within the
technical sector would expect their employees to be able to use 3D Printers and we aim to prepare
our pupils for this by fundraising for this equipment. Training in school would give our pupils a clear
advantage to those who have not had any. Our aim is to raise £5,600 so that we have two opera-
tional 3D printers by September 2016.
To date with the support of our Parent Council, we have reserved a pitch at the Spring Fair to gen-
erate funding. Pupils have been working hard to create products to sell on the stall and have even
offered to help run it on the day. Your support for this project would help our pupils
have the edge over others in the future, as well as the added benefit of being able to manufacture
high quality outcomes for their GCSE and A-Level coursework. It is detailed in the exam specifica-
tion assessment criteria that pupils are expected to be able to use Computer Aided Design and
Computer Aided Manufacture equipment with confidence for both GCSE and A-Level qualifications.
The opportunity to be able to use the software and 3D printers would ensure our pupils have ex-
ceptional coursework outcomes and knowledge in this area. Please donate generously to this
worthwhile cause!

Ms Oliver and Ms Sherman
are running the London
Marathon!
London Marathon 2016: update!
As you know, we will be running the London Marathon on Sunday 24th
April 2016…less than two weeks away. We have been training hard and completed our final longest run
of 22 miles. We have also competed in the Kingston Half Marathon and the Fleet Half Marathon. We
were both able to finish these races in under 2 hours.
This month we have been “tapering” and in our final week, we shall be eating as many carbohydrates as
possible! It has been a challenge in so many ways – managing our training with our jobs, fundraising and
avoiding injury.
Thank you very much to everyone who has donated so far. We
have raised over £4000 to date and we are hoping to hit our tar-
get of £6000 before race day. We have not only relied on gener-
ous donations but have organised various fundraising events since
December 2015.
Fundraising events have included carol singing, a pub quiz, a chari-
ty concert and silent auction as well as a netball tournament. On
the last day of term we had a non-uniform day and a cake sale and
raised over £500. All proceeds will go towards our final fundrais-
ing total. If you would like to help us reach our goal of £6000,
please log-on to our online fundraising page (link below). It would also be fantastic to see people around
London on the day cheering us on – If you would like to come and watch Ms Sherman and Ms Oliver on
Sunday – best places to stand are:
Along the embankment for the last 4 miles of the race (near Blackfriars Bridge or Westminster
Bridge)
Limehouse – you see us twice! (13 mile and 22 mile)
Our race numbers are 48885 and 48886. You can use these to track us on our route.
We will need all the help we can get to keep on running…
Any final donations would be hugely appreciated www.virginmoneygiving.com/emmabethhannah
