Roseworthy Student Newsletter
We are now half way through semester one. We have student representatives that sit on various committees within the School (refer to the list in this newsletter). This important role involves at-tending monthly meetings and providing that valu-able link between the programs and students. It is an opportunity for the representatives to provide feedback and information from a student perspec-tive and can help shape the future of the pro-grams. Remember if you have queries relating to EMS administration (e.g. insurance forms) or any aca-demic program related queries (you may have previously sent to me) please email [email protected] (rather than emailing any individual staff members). For any course specific enquires please email the Course Co-ordinator directly. Please note if you have an academic related EMS question, email Dr Wendy Hamood ([email protected]) or an urgent EMS query or notification, call Wendy on 0459 836 107.
The School’s Recognition Evening was held on
Monday 28th April, where we recognised a number
of students in the Bachelor of Science (Animal
Science), Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Biosci-
ence), Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Honours
programs for their efforts in 2013. Congratulations
to all winners.
Things can change from year to year so it is im-
portant that each year students complete the Stu-
dent Information and Safety Declaration (click
here or on the full link below). This was emailed
to all students on 17th April and again on 12th May.
If you have not completed it yet can you please
log in to do so as a matter of urgency? https://login.adelaide.edu.au/cas/login?service=https%3A%2F%2Funified.adelaide.edu.au%2Fc%2Fportal%2Flogin
Please be reminded that if you are absent from a
tutorial or practical, you must first inform the
relevant Course Co-ordinator, obtain supporting
documentation (e.g. doctors certificate), com-
plete an Allowed Leave of Absence form
(www.sciences.adelaide.edu.au/current-
students/forms/), ask the Course Co-ordinator to
sign it, and then you drop the completed form
and documentation into the Williams Building for
processing.
Exams will soon be upon us and for first year
students please remember everyone learns
differently so find a way that suits you and make
a plan. Plan a study schedule and ensure you
allow yourself enough time in the weeks leading
up to the exam for revision. While some students
may find it beneficial to study in groups others
prefer to study alone. Whichever method you
use, consider reviewing past exam papers, re-
viewing lecture and tutorial materials, seek sup-
port if you need it and don’t be afraid to direct
any queries to your lecturers. They are here to
help you and want you to succeed.
All the best for the rest of Semester 1. Kat Norris Academic Programs Officer

RACSUC Student Association
AVSA Student Association
Salutations. AVSA here…
Well term one has already come to an end, and what a frantic, eventful six weeks it has been. AVSA has been busy in the first term not only hosting our annual Barn Dance, but for the first time this year we also held the AVSA Meet and Greet.
The Meet and Greet was aimed at second year students, whose full time life on campus officially began this year. Starting with donut eating, and ending in an obstacle course covered in egg, soap, water and feathers, the night was a huge success. Thank-you to all the second years who participat-ed and all those who came out to watch.
Barn Dance this year had a little bit of a change up. Our usual caller, Peter Heath, showed our students how to move, but the highlight for everyone was the mechanical bull. My effort of a dismal 15 seconds was definitely put to shame by many students who al-most made the minute mark. Special thanks to Tracey from the AUU for helping selling tickets for this event.
Stay tuned for more updates via the ASVA facebook page and university email, and we look forward to seeing you all at AVSA’s next event.
Quiz Night
This year quiz night will be held at St. Marks College, North Adelaide on Sat the 31st of May. It will be held in con-junction with the 6th year Africa trip students to support the Nsikazi project. Starts at 7:30pm. Tables of 10-12.
The Nsikazi project works to manage animals where wildlife and livestock meet, particularly around the Kruger National Park area, to ensure both populations of animals are healthy.
This includes (but not limited to)
General veterinary screening for foot and mouth disease
‘dipping’ animals to prevent parasites,
vaccinate against rabies (both livestock and community dogs) and,
protect against tuberculosis.
All this to ensure a healthy animal
population, and in turn a healthier human population!
Ticket sales start this week down with Tracey at the AUU and outside the vet building on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Cost: $10 for AVSA members and $15 for all non-members.
Ticket Sales: Tickets can be bought from Tracey at the AUU office every-day when she is down there or from the AVSA website, people can also keep an eye out for AVSA members selling tickets a couple of lunch times this week up at the Vet building.
Tables: All staff and students welcome to get a table together and come sup-port the cause. However it is first in best dressed and therefore a good idea for people to get there whole ta-ble of 10 or 12 together asap to pay as a whole table and guarantee their place.
Theme: The theme of the night is Afri-ca, however all tables are encouraged to choose their own theme for their table to dress up (prizes for best dressed table-as always!)
Hi everybody, hope you all had an enjoyable break and got plenty of rest!
First up, we are excited to welcome 4 new members to the RACSUC com-mittee; Tim Fulton, Daniel Colella, An-gus Misan and Chris Smith. They are all really enthusiastic to get started, and will make a great contribution to the committee! Voting was very close, and we hope that all unsuccessful can-didates will reapply at the change of committee later this year.
We were delighted to see many of you at the Willaston Pub Night after Col-lege Cup at the end of last term. The event was a great success, and we are hoping to make it a reoccurring
event. The Willaston have been highly supportive and put on great drink spe-cials for the evening. We look forward to seeing you all at the next one! Also keep your ears open for the Re-O’Week schedule, which plans are already well underway for.
Finally, we would like to formally an-nounce that the 2015 Roseworthy O’Week will be held in the official Uni-versity of Adelaide Orientation Week, being the week before uni goes back (23rd – 27th February 2015). We are really excited about this change as it will allow greater participation of older years in events, and give us many more options for exciting new events.
We hope that you can all mark this change in your diaries, and please feel free to pass any event suggestions onto the RACUSC committee.
Until next time,
Your RACSUC Committee

The University of Adelaide Equine Special Interest Group
Hey Readers,
This year we have had a few of our regular yearly events proceed without fault! This includes the Castration Clinic run by Elizabeth Herbert at the Adelaide Plains Equine Clinic and our fantastic Day At the Races, in con-junction with the South Australian Jockey Club.
On Saturday the 5th of April we had our first Castration Clinic of the year, with the fantastic Elizabeth Herbert showing us the ropes of how to anes-thetize a horse and castrate it without a hitch. All students who attended had a great day, and everyone got to have a crack at the procedure. A big thanks to the team at the Adelaide Plains Eq-uine Clinic for showing us the go, and being patient with all those involved .
The second major event of the year was the Day At the Races run down at Morphettville Race Course. The day started off with a tour of the training facilities, including a view of the water walker and a talk by a leading South Australian horse trainer (who coinci-dently had a horse win the Darby later that afternoon, pretty convenient!!). We then moved over to the Mor-phettville Equine Clinic and had a tour of the facilities there, along with a chat with some of the equine vets, which was insightful. The afternoon was then frock-up time, as the ladies put on their best attire and the boys tried to scrub
up to standard in order to attend the races for the day. All in all it was a very good day, and a big thanks to Allie Brown for being the event organ-izer along with the SAJC, and the Mor-phettville Equine Clinic for all their help it was fantastic.
Finally, we have a few up and coming/continuing events that we are holding; Lunchtime Talks on the 20th of May we will be holding a talk by Dr Darien Feary on Colloid Fluid Therapy in horses, please come along and keep your ears open for more details on future talks. Endurance Rides, there have already been a few of these one attended on the 10th/11th of May, and they are a great opportunity to develop your TPR skills and meet some really nice equine minded people. There are some up coming rides and the oppor-tunity can't be missed to try and listen to as many hearts as possible and try and pick up those trick murmurs. Thanks to the guys at he South Aus-tralian Endurance Ride Association for having us along.
If anyone has any quires or would like further information on any of the events please don’t hesitate to contact me on

Adelaide Wildlife Appreciation Group AWAG has kicked off the new year with
a flying start. We have already hosted a
variety of awesome events this term,
including a movie night, field trip to the
Adelaide Koala and Wildlife Hospital, a
cupcake decorating night, a student
presentation night (EMS placement
ideas), and of course the launch of our
new "Wildlife Webinar Series". Be sure
to check out our 2014 Event Calendar
for more exciting upcoming events!
Movie Night
The AWAG movie night screening of
Blackfish was a fantastic success and a
great way to start off the new year!
More than 50 students turned up to
watch the thought provoking film, which
sparked a lot of discussion about the
topic of animals kept in captivity and
where the line should be drawn. De-
spite the temperature drop as the night
progressed, everyone seemed to have
a great time with drinks and nibbles
under the stars. The raffle was also
drawn on the night, congratulations to
all of the lucky winners.
Webinars
In an action packed first half of semes-
ter 1, AWAG launched the ‘Wildlife
Webinar Series’ that ran for three
weeks and provided staff and students
the opportunity to tune into an online
wildlife lecture on a weeknight evening.
This inaugural series allowed AWAG to
connect Roseworthy staff and students
with veterinarians and researchers
around Australia to learn about unique
and important wildlife topics, with all
registration money to be donated to the
organisation of the presenter's choice.

Field Trip
On Tuesday the 15th of April, AWAG
hosted its first field trip for 2014. Thirty
enthusiastic students met at the Ade-
laide Koala and Wildlife Hospital
(AKWH) for a unique opportunity exclu-
sively for AWAG members. AWAG was
privileged enough to have our very own
guided tour of the hospital and care
facilities by no other than Rae Camp-
bell, the founder of AKWH. Students
were then taken to the education centre
in the back of the hospital where Mrs.
Campbell gave a comprehensive
presentation covering the history of
koala populations in South Australia,
important koala physiological and ana-
tomical differentiations, basic handling
of injured koalas, rescue techniques,
legislation and laws in SA regarding
koalas, and finally koala care. At the
end of the session, AWAG was pleased
to present a $100 gift to the Adelaide
Koala and Wildlife Hospital to aid in the
rehabilitation of Adelaide’s fauna.
AWAG would like to thank Rae Camp-
bell and Alex Barrow for their time on
the day, as well as all the other volun-
teers working at the AKWH for their
magnificent work.

National servicemen’s plaque unveiled at Roseworthy
A group of Roseworthy Old Collegians Association national servicemen have organised a commemorative plaque for former students who were con-scripted for military service from 1964 to 1971.
The plaque was unveiled by Profes-sor Kym Abbott, Head of the University of Adelaide's School of Veterinary and Animal Sciences on 22 March in the Roseworthy College Hall to recognise past Roseworthy Agricultural College students who were conscripted into National Service under the 1964 Na-tional Service Act.
Represented on the day were national servicemen, Roseworthy Old Collegi-ans Association (ROCA) and the Uni-versity, with speeches from past na-tional servicemen Dick Turnbull and Peter Winter.
ROCA has a proud tradition of com-memorating the military service of ex students who served their country in time of war. Members are currently working on updating the honour roll in the Roseworthy Chapel with the names of alumni who served in the armed forces since World War II.

Staff vs Student—Cricket 20/20 Big Bash
Played at the
Roseworthy Oval
on Thursday 20th
March 2014.
Overview by the legendary
Wayne Boardman
The kit had arrived, the pitch marked out and rolled, the boundary cones placed and the staff adjourned for the pep talk in the stadium chang-ing rooms of the Roseworthy College oval. Not so much a pep talk but an opportunity to put on Mitchell Johnson handlebar moustaches to intimidate the students and hopefully signal as it did in the Ashes series that we meant business. Of course this act of bravado was completely ruined by the mysteriously mustachioed staffers standing together singing the staff song, penned by that well known lyricist Dr Darren Trott. “C’mon Staffies, c’mon”, that catchy chart topping ditty from the late 70’s rendered the students both perplexed and amused. (Lyrics in the appendix)
Bec and Christine took some photos to highlight the cricketing prowess of the staff team which included notable personalities, Charles Caraguel (Craggers), Ryan O’Handley (O’Handers), Adam O’Connell (Tubes), Michael Cathcart (Cathers), Darren Trott (Trotters), Sam Abraham (Abers), Viabhav Gole (Golers), Rich-ard Turtill (Turters), David Purdie (Purders), Adrian Hines (Hiners) and captain Wayne Boardman (Boarders). The student team ably led by James Young, of recent Freeling CC fame, having just competed on Adelaide Oval, included several youthful club players with some excellent cricketing pedigree. Whereas the staff were all a bunch of has-beens or wan-nabe has-beens with sore knees, tight ham-strings and various levels of myopia and pres-byopia.
The students won the toss and elected to bat. Each team wished the others good luck and the staff sought to explain to the by now confident students, that in fact intimidatory behavior to-wards any staff member was likely to mean an extended period as a student. We were hon-oured by Professor Kym Abbott agreeing to be the umpire in his last year as Head of School.
The atmosphere was electric as the staff took to
the field, tens of students (or at least 10) turned up to watch their team slaughter the staff. Cathers had not arrived and Tubs was not sure whether to go to the calving or to send his wife. Stephen Pyecroft (Pikers) and his son Harry were thus conscripted to assist in the field, pending the arrival of our tardy equine veteri-narian. Purders donned the gloves as Boarders martialled his troops. Craggers in his hot pink socks patrolled the boundary as Abers opened the bowling.
Within a jiffy, the staffers were smiling. Quigley did not respond to Burns call for a run and Burns was stranded without facing a ball. Nicholls hit a quick fire 18 before being wonder-fully caught on the boundary by O’Handers. Trott trapped Quigley as Purders whipped off the bails beautifully and with such elegance, he could have been mistaken for Haddin. Young, the student’s captain was in excellent form depositing all and sundry over the boundary before retiring at 20. Collett struggled valiantly to get off the mark before O’Handers bowled Smith. Cameron succumbed to Boarders guile and was bemused and bowled. Tubs took an excellent catch at deep mid off to dismiss KRA. Packer hit an excellent 30. Cathers snaffled Sexton and Fensham was no match for Board-ers leg spin. Hiners got Hibbard and Weir was bowled. All out for 121 (the total to chase) with four overs to spare, so we were left to admire the retiree Young as he faced the last few overs, biffing sixes with consummate ease. The final total was 171 with Young getting 67 before being run out.
The staffers turn did not start too well - hastily sent in batsmen Craggers and Tubs (who had to leave for rugby coaching and a calving re-
spectively) were out very soon with the accurate Fensham taking two wickets in his first over. Abers soon succumbed as well and the staff were reeling at 3 for 2. Golers then came in and with O’Handers put on an excellent exhibition of power hitting before they both retired. Trotters played a composed innings of 15 before being controversially out lbw to Fensham. Hiners, Purders and Turters both perished quite quickly to some wily bowling. At 8-79, Boarders was then joined by retiree Golers. Steadily they crept to the winning total – Golers being particu-larly harsh on Hibbard despite giving a couple of chances to the butterfingers Young. Board-ers hit a towering six over mid off which was truly astounding because he could barely see the ball. Down to the last two overs and only six was needed. Could it be the staffers would get revenge and beat the students in a battle of epic proportions. Golers missed a couple of mighty swipes and then hit one to cover. Delu-sions of youthful athleticism meant Boarders ran for a quick single only to be stranded two metres short while digging a furrow with his bat. Boarders had confidence that the reliable O’Handers could down the students but in the gathering gloom was bowled comprehensively. All out for 116. The students had won by 5 runs, and the staffers had grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory.
Lots of jolly back slapping and leg pulling con-tinued over a very welcome cool beer. Kym Abbott was presented with an engraved minia-ture bat (which he said will end up in the pool room) as man of the match for sentimental reasons, being his last year as head of school. Over for another year but lets hope the staffers can avenge the defeat in 12 months time on Thursday 19th March 2015…….
