Official Publication for Members of the Golden Hills Mustang Club Established 1982
DEC. 2015 & JAN. 2016 VOLUME XXXIII, 12 & XXXIV, 1
Sunday November 29th was the Golden
Hills Mustang Club's annual Christmas Toy
Drive held at Vacaville's Fosters Freeze.
The club has been doing this toy drive on
the Sunday after Thanksgiving at this
location for many years.
The weather that day was sunny, but very
cold in the mid to high 50's...but that
didn't deter about two dozen member
families from dropping by to hang out for a
few hours! Some only stayed long enough to
donate some toys, but the important thing
was everyone brought toys. Special thanks
go out to the "setup crew" of Kirk & Cheryl Stafford and Frank Lopez. Kirk brought an extra EZ Up and plenty of
zip-ties to secure our club banners and Frank let me bring three of
his folding tables to add to the couple tables I had. This year we
decided to set up our booth right next to the street for better
visibility from the Merchant street traffic. The decision was made
easier by the fact that there was more sun (hint: warmth) in this
location than our usual spot in the shade right outside the Fosters
Freeze door. It wasn't long until we filled the five tables with the
toys and had to begin stacking them on the ground under the tables.
Around 2:30pm we had a FLE count of approximately 185 toys!

Hello Mustang Family,
My wish is that your holidays have been filled with spirit and joy spent with
family and friends. The club’s Christmas party had great food, atmosphere
and most of all our well dressed club members. It always feels like I am
around family when with the club. Thanks to Elise Stevenson for putting the event together, Craig &
Amy Beckley for collecting the funds, Tammy Robinette and Wanda Billings for the table decorations
and last but not least Elks Sponsors Sandy & Dave Silveira, for securing the room once again.
I have been trying to get back into full swing with the club in the past year with all the changes I have
been making in my life. Brandon is now 20 years old and 3 semesters away from graduating from
Sacramento State and Courtney is 19 years old in her first year at Sac State. Right now the single
track running is very addictive for me right now. Just hoping my body will keep getting stronger and not
fall apart.
Please see the calendar of events section of this newsletter for events.
Each club member can and does make an impact to our club. Each that contributes their talents willingly
makes Golden Hills Mustang Club an organization that I am proud to lead once again.
Here is to the New Year!
P.S. Do you know anyone who is interested in purchasing my 1965 Fastback, please let me know.
See you out on the trail.-Tim Leathers

We had at least eleven Mustangs parked
on display for most of the day; they
were brought by myself, Bill Davis, Dan
McCabe, Terry & Ileine Burke, the
S t a f f o r d s , J e r e m y & R e n e e
Wiederspahn, Howie Tomson, Joe &
Tammy Holecek, Sue Calvert, Robin
Paulsell and Peter & Lisa Mitsopoulos.
For this year's toy drive, I selected the
CHP to receive the toys for their annual
"CHiP's for Kids" toy drive program.
Officer Dave Harvey, POI (Public
Information Officer) from the Fairfield field
office drove up about 15 minutes before
closing and we proceeded to fill every
available seat, floor space and rear cargo
area of the CHP Explorer with our toys which
we had bagged up while awaiting his arrival.
This year no one's battery needed a jump
from the CHP's heavy duty, standard issue
set of jumper cables which we know from a
past year (2013) will jump start even the
deadest battery on any 1965 Ford Station
Wagons which may still be on the road
today!
In summary it was a great day with lots
of toys collected! Thank you to everyone
who came to hang out or just stopped by
to donate toys.

Fairfield Veteran's Day Parade by Brian Evans
One great thing about living in close proximity to
Travis Air Force Base is the way the surrounding
cities and county show respect, support and
admiration to the entire military community and
especially its veterans. One way that this is
accomplished by the City of Fairfield is through
their annual Veteran's Day Parade put on by the
Downtown Main Street Merchant's Association
which has sponsored this event for many years
now.
This year's parade was held on Wednesday
November 11th, and the theme was "Land of the
Free, Because of the Brave". Once again the
Golden Hills Mustang Club made a strong showing
at this parade, with twenty cars showing up to
participate.
We met at our usual meeting place at the Solano Mall/JC Penney parking lot at 10:30am and had plenty of time to
visit with each other while everyone showed up. It was good to see some members we hadn't seen in a while like
Paul Thoren and his white with red stripe 1968 California Special. Once all had arrived, we headed over to our
staging area as a group and guess what? We had more time to get our cars shined up and decorated, pull out some
folding chairs, and visit some more. Some members ventured off to the downtown Starbucks while waiting for
the parade to start. At this point I left the group to go pick up the Parade Grand Marshal, TAFB Colonel Joel
Jackson, who I had the privilege of transporting in the parade for the second year in a row in my '68 convertible.
Once my duty of driving Col. Jackson through the parade and then delivering him back to the Judging stand was
complete, I was able to enjoy the parade as a spectator and take pictures of our club cars as they passed by. At
one point the announcer at the Judge stand encouraged our Mustangs to "rev 'em up a little...let's hear those
ponies roar!" They all sounded good from my spot on the sidewalk, but I'd have to say that Joe and Tammy
Holecek in their 40th Anniversary 2008 Silver GT500KR sounded the meanest and best. (Hmmn, KR? I'm not
biased or anything...!)
After the parade was
over, most members
who didn't have to
hustle back to work
went over to Suisun's
Puerto Vallarta for
lunch. Once again I'd
like to thank the club
for showing up on a
weekday to support and
participate in this
parade. - more pictures on next page

Fairfield Veteran's Day Parade Photos
Well, it was a beautiful fall day, we were in the forest visiting a saw mill that runs 4 times a year
using the equipment four generations have used. It was a very fun day. While walking back to our
car, we saw that a Model A group was leaving. So we went over to watch them and reminisce
about the Model A’s we have had. As we got near our car, Danny said “Cristy, why did you leave
the back window open?” I didn’t leave it open, he had the keys… when we got near the car, he
reached up and closed the hatch window, and there were 5 turtles of misc sizes for the family who
owned the car…. Oops!
And, during the same month, we had traveled home from the Sacramento Auto Show with
our convertible in the trailer. We went to South Vallejo to unload the car and disconnect
and store the trailer. It was late, dark and we were in a hurry to get home for a trip
early the next day. When we called home from Mexico to check on things, our daughter
Rachel, wanted to know why the trailer clips were on the bumper of the truck in our
driveway (they were left there when we disconnected the trailer and then drove across
town).
Not only did Danny win the Ha award for October, but he also won the HA of the Year at
the GHMC Christmas Party. -Cristy Cordeiro

GHMC Veterans Liaison Bill Davis presented a check from the club for $1000 to
the Solano Community College Veterans Memorial construction fund! The College
plays a major role in providing training to veterans leaving military service and
integrating into civilian life.
A card and flowers were sent to Dick Pickering who had surgery for
a fractured hip and he had to have a rod inserted into his leg.

“Santa has been great to me.” The driving part of the 2015 High Five Tour has ended but not the mission.
Wounded Warriors Family Support is still reaching out and helping our Veterans
and their families. To date they have delivered 31 vehicles and plan to deliver 3
or 4 more by the end of the year. The following article from the Omaha
World-Herald is about the presentation of the 2015 Ford Explorer that our Club
had the honor to have in its possession on the tour, along with a 2015 F-150
SuperCrew. On December 17th the Explorer, with our logo and your signatures,
was given to Army Veteran John Weinburgh and his family.
Thank You, Golden Hills Mustang Club Members and supporters, for making a
difference in wounded veterans’ lives. WWFS says: WELL DONE TO ALL OF
YOU FOR YOUR PART IN MOBILITY IS FREEDOM
WHEELCHAIR-ACCESSIBLE SUV, ONE OF THE FIRST IN U.S.,
ENSURES MOBILITY FOR INJURED VET
By Courtney Brummer-Clark / World-Herald staff writer
This Christmas is not one veteran John
Weinburgh will forget.
From his wheelchair on Thursday, the
39-year-old Weinburgh stared at the
gift in front of him: a 2015 Ford
Explorer, adorned in red, white and
blue automobile wrap and covered with
hundreds of signatures in silver ink.
No, this SUV is not a typical vehicle. It
will allow Weinburgh, an Army veteran
and quadriplegic, mobility and freedom.
The Explorer is one of the first
wheelchair-accessible SUVs ever produced. It was given to the former staff
sergeant by the Omaha Wounded Warriors Family Support group and converted by
BraunAbility and Heartland Mobility to meet Weinburgh’s needs.
“I wanted to cry because I was so happy, but yet I felt like I didn’t deserve it,” the
Bellevue, Nebraska man said.
Weinburgh suffered spinal injuries in February 2007 during an infantry training
exercise near Savannah, Georgia. The armored personnel carrier he was riding in
struck a tree, causing the tree to collapse on the vehicle and crushing Weinburgh.
- continued on next page
10
He was hospitalized for seven months in Georgia before being moved to Bellevue. He said life
since the accident has been a struggle, not only for him but for his family. “For me, the hard-
est part of the recovery was being the father of three young children and not having them
understand their dad was different,” he said. “I couldn’t tie my own shoes, button my own
jacket, put a straw in a Capri Sun. It made me feel like a bad dad.”
Retired Marine Corps Col. John Folsom, president of Wounded Warriors Family Support, said it
is important for families to be made whole again, “to have the ability to live normal lives. That
means going to the grocery store, taking the kid to soccer practice, taking the daughter to
ballet. It means going to work. And having the proper vehicle for somebody who is challenged is
essential.”
Michael Patterson of Heartland Mobility said 40 percent of its clients are veterans. Most
wheelchair-accessible vehicles are minivans. “There is a different stigma for veterans about
driving a minivan versus other vehicles,” he said. “It affects their mindset and becomes a
resignation about having to go into a minivan. Driving an SUV has a better impact on their
emotional state.”
Wounded Warriors Family Support, a national organization based in Omaha, presented
Weinburgh with the SUV that the
organization had used for its High Five Tour: a
four-month excursion that utilized the Ford
Explorer and 2015 Ford F-150 to travel more
than 26,000 miles across the United States
to raise awareness and funds. The tour
stopped in more than 100 cities in 48 states.
At each stop, people were invited to sign their
names and offer supportive messages on the
vehicles’ removable wraps.
Weinburgh approached the Wounded
Warriors Family Support group after his
minivan — which already was difficult for him
to access because of a steep ramp — broke down, again. The group thought he would be a good
candidate to receive the Explorer after the tour ended, Folsom said.
BraunAbility, an Indiana-based company that designs wheelchair-accessible vehicles, joined the
effort and the SUV was converted to fit Weinburgh’s needs.
Andrew Huber, BraunAbility’s north-central area sales manager, said that among its amenities
the vehicle is equipped with a lower floor, a wheelchair ramp with a lower slope and LED ramp
lights. The vehicle allows him to steer with the one hand that is fully functional, and also allows
a standard driver’s seat to be put in place when his wife, Kristen, drives.
Weinburgh said he plans to leave the signed wrap on the black vehicle for now, to continue to
promote awareness of the help offered by Wounded Warriors Family Support.
The combined cost of the Explorer, the specialized equipment and the outfitting is worth
almost $70,000, Patterson said.
It’s a gift Weinburgh said he “deeply appreciates.”
“Santa has been great to me.”
