Integrity Operating Windows (IOWs)
API RP 580 Section 6.4
“Operating within the boundaries is critical to the validity of the
RBI study….”
API 510 Section 5.4.2
“Potential of damage is dependent upon its material of
construction, design, construction, and operating conditions. The
inspector should be familiar with these conditions...”
API RP 584
1.1 “Understanding of process/operating conditions and resulting
damage mechanisms are required in order to establish and
maintain an inspection program …….”
1.6 “….integrity operating windows (IOWs) are limits on process
variables that need to be established and implemented in

API RP 584, Section 1.8
Examples of Multiple IOW Limits for Furnace Tubes designed for 950 °F
• 1000 °F - First IOW Limit. Shortened service life. Operators directed to
regain control of furnace firing.
• 1050 °F – Second IOW Limit. Operators directed to take more
immediate actions and/or shut down the furnace.

IOW–Need for Content Development
Key Questions while Developing IOW Policies:
• Optimal Level of Monitoring?
• What are my Industry Peers doing?
• Excursion follow up process?
• KPIs/Dashboards for IOW Management?
• Excursion Data in Meridium vs. Process
Historians?

Proposed IOW Content Structure
Category 1 - IOW Policies
• IOWs Specific to Damage Mechanism.
Limits based on Established Industry Guidelines.
Examples: Creep, HTHA etc.
Category 2 - IOW Policies
• IOWs Specific to Damage Mechanism.
Limits Dependent on Plant and Process Design
Examples: Amine Unit, etc.
Category 3 - IOW Policies:
• IOW Policies not specific to Damage Mechanisms.
Example: Compare Real Time Corrosion against
Predicted Corrosion Rates.

Proposed IOW Content Development
Approach
Collaborative Approach with Selected Clients
in each Industry Vertical – Refining
– Petrochemical
– Oil and Gas Production
– LNG
Category 1 - IOW Policies: – Agree on a List of Damage Mechanisms and Methods.
– Develop and Validate Policies.
Category 2 - IOW Policies: – Develop Policies for Process Units with Clients
– Genericize for Other Clients.
Category 3 - IOW Policies: – Develop and Validate policies.

Proposed IOW Content Delivery
Approach
Category 1 & 3 - IOW Policies:
- Packaged Solution Clients: - Policies delivered to Client with Documentation
- Clients apply policies to Assets in their database
- Non Packaged Solution Clients: - Policies delivered to Client with Documentation
- Clients modify Policies based on their configuration (or use
Meridium Professional Services)
- Clients apply policies to Assets in their database
Category 2 - IOW Policies: – Policies delivered to Client with Documentation
– Policies reviewed by Client and Modified based on their Process
Design
