Opera Institute is a pre-professional

training Intensive for dedicated high school singers interested in pursuing opera in college and as a career. S

tudents are held to a high standard of professionalism

and are supported by caring staff throughout the process. O

n the first day of the Institute, each singer w

ill audition for the entire faculty. Each student is then assigned an Italian art song and opera scene that is studied, m

emorized, and

performed during the course of the three w

eeks.

Daily coaching sessions, individual voice lessons,

and academic coursew

ork help the students prepare their assigned pieces, grow

as performers,

and understand the expectations of being a college m

usic major and professional artist. A

taste of “real life” as an opera singer is highlighted through m

aster classes and sem

inars with professionals in the

Students w

ill explore the historical periods of opera and various com

posers from each era. They

will delve into the different genres of opera, learn

opera terminology and perform

ance traditions, and participate in an in-depth study of style and language.

This exciting and fast-paced class will review

the technical fundam

entals of being on stage and im

mediately apply that inform

ation to the fundam

entals of performing as a singing actor in

opera, operetta, or musical theater. A

n exploration of techniques used to portray em

otions in a standard opera scene w

ill be applied in all classes.

NThis class is designed to help students understand basic Italian pronunciation, learn the International P

honetic Alphabet (IPA

) rules, distinguish between

correct and incorrect Italian diction as demonstrated

by current performing artists, and prepare for their

Italian Art S

ong recital.

sing an innovative approach, students will study

concepts in music theory (such as key signatures,

intervals, etc.) tailored to their level. Sight singing

and ear training become easier w

hile interpretations becom

e more vital and artistic.

Students w

ill receive three private voice lessons during the program

. These lessons focus on vocal developm

ent, including breath managem

ent, intonation, and m

usicianship (based on the needs of each student), w

hile encouraging proper vocal health and m

anagement. The students w

ill be given repertoire that is appropriate w

ith their level of singing and based upon the recom

mendation of the faculty.

Sunday, June 24. Institute participants are

guaranteed a space in the competition, do

not pay a registration fee, and may check

into Institute housing early to facilitate participation. S
