Every year, a panel of judges from Wilkes County Schools selects a Teacher of
the Year for each school from a pool of nominations. The judges observe the
teachers in the classroom and rate their performance. Mrs. Dawn Pickens,
who teaches seventh grade math, was selected for W-WMS. “I was honored
and excited to be chosen as Teacher of the Year,” Mrs. Pickens said. “I abso-
lutely love teaching and spending time with these students.”

W-WMS is joining the entire state in promoting “Character Education.” Each week students will
reflect upon a word that describes a positive characteristic, such as courtesy, honesty, and toler-
ance. In a statement from a document explaining the program, the Georgia Department of Educa-
tion wrote, “As students progress through public schools, it is important that their education pro-
vide instructional opportunities, explicit and implicit that help them develop their beliefs about
what is right and good.” This weekly assignment also betters students in the task of being “at the
right place at the right time doing the right thing,” our school behavior motto.
The students shown above have done an out-
standing job this season running with the WWCHS
Cross Country Team. These students are: (l-r)
Hope Ward, Emily Connell, Boone Lukich, and (not
pictured) Cody McLeroy. They are experiencing
what cross country will be like in high school. They
have worked very hard. Keep it up!

The students listed above were selected for the students of the
month in October. They are (l-r): Aneicia Turner, Bobby Welch,
Avery Hall, Tramad Daniels, Yakweisha Lackey, and Chalequa Owens.

W-WMS Fundraiser
Our first fundraiser in 2010 ended Monday, October 11. The sales were kicked off, September 16, with an assembly in the gym. At
the assembly, students learned what they were going to be selling and that the money would go towards rewards for teachers and
students. The items sold included a variety of cookie dough, awesome chocolate and candy, wrapping paper for gifts, house-hold
appliances, and much more. Great prizes were offered for outstanding sales such as a class pizza party, cash awards and a drawing
for an iPod Touch.
