INTRODUCTION
Total water losses in Turkey like many other countries are around 50%. Therefore, it is crucial to reduce the losses to improve water efficiency, achieve sustainability and save energy.
ANTALYA SCADA SYSTEM
Continuous real time monitoring of water quantity and quality is achieved at many locations in Antalya Water Distribution Network (WDN) using SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system. The system enables controlling the operation of water pumps beside opening and closing the valves from a control room. Also, the SCADA system produces alarms when the flow rates exceed certain limits in case of pipe bursts.
AUTOMATIC METER READING
Automatic Meter Readings (AMR) were used to record water consumption by the water users at some locations providing details of the consumption variations day and night.
HYDRAULIC MODELLING
The collected data sets were used for hydraulic modeling. The US-EPA EPANET software was applied to many pilot study areas in Antalya city. Fire hydrants were opened to create additional flow rates. The field and SCADA data sets were used for model calibration and verification
PRESSURE MANAGEMENT
The results of hydraulic modeling were used to reduce excess water pressure because it causes excess physical water losses. Water authorities usually use Pressure Reducing Valves (PRVs) to break excess pressure in WDN. However, the broken pressure is a type of energy that should be recovered.
LOSSES REDUCTION & ENERGY PRODUCTION
A recent PAT (Pump As Turbine) system was installed at Antalya WDN to recover even low excess pressure and produce electricity. The system started to operate one year ago and it is progressing well.
SCADA and AMR provides the required data sets for hydraulic modelling which is necessary to apply pressure management to reduce excess water pressure and produce energy.
