Nationwide cooperation agreement signed with Brit-

ish EmbassyFrom Front Page.... The new agreement aims to im-

prove the quality of life for the most vulnerable expatriates, and their ability to access Red Cross services. It also seeks to encourage people in the British community to volunteer for Red Cross activities and promote collaboration with other British com-munity associations.

The partnership, which was signed on Monday 21 September at the headquarters of the Red Cross, will be piloted in the province of Ali-cante, which has a large British com-munity. The aim is then to extend it nationwide, enabling British commu-nities across Spain to access Red Cross services and become involved in their projects.

Simon Manley said: “People in the British communities have a wealth of experience and skills, and I really hope that this new partnership with the Red Cross will encourage more people to volunteer their tal-ents and support for the benefit of others.

“The agreement will also help to ensure that British expats in the Alicante region have easier access

to the wide range of Red Cross re-sources, which can improve their quality of life.”

Javier Gimeno added: “We have identified a large number of British people in our province who, because of their age and health, may require Red Cross services such as adapt-ed transport, accompaniment and home telecare. Our aims are to in-spire members of the British commu-nity to volunteer for the Red Cross and to encourage those who require assistance to take advantage of our services.”

Pamela Twissel-Cross, welfare officer for the Royal British Legion, who attended the signing, comment-ed: “I’m really looking forward to working more closely with the Red Cross as it will give me a chance to help British nationals get additional support.

“It will also be a chance to learn and find out more about what is available so that together we can support the most vulnerable.”

The signing ceremony was at-tended by representatives of a large number of English language asso-ciations in the province of Alicante including: Age Con-cern Costa Blanca Sur, the Royal British Legion, the Samari-

tans, the Royal Airforce Association, Help at Home, International Resi-dents Daya Nueva, AFA Torrevie-ja, MABS Cancer Support, Help at Home Mar Menor, and the HELP groups in Denia, Benidorm, Jalón Valley, Vega Baja and Mar Menor.

Dear ReadersSimply amazing are the words for my description of the fan-tastic September weather. Having guests here during the month of September is always a joy as the sun is shinning and the warm days and cooler nights provides a comfortable and fresh feeling. The towns along the coast are busy with holiday makers and we can already see the high number of long term visitors returning for the Autumn months ahead.

We have been busier than ever with a fully packed newspa-per with useful information about the local events and gener-al information on the places to visit, shop and an abundance of food and drink outlets for you to enjoy.

Myself and the team at the Buzz newspaper and Heat FM radio have worked during the weekend hosting the 5th In-ternational charity fair last Sunday. We had the pleasure of the British Consul together with the local mayor of Benidorm who both came along to give their support and gratitude to the many volunteers giving their time and dedication to the many charities. You can read this full story on pages 32 & 33.

The arrival of Vicky Locklin our star presenter at Heat FM has been busy moving house something that most of us dread the thought of having to do, but for the benefit of our listeners Vicky will now be on air live every week day from 12 to 3pm with the Brighter Lunch. So please tune in to 90.3 for Marina Baxia and also 106.8 covering the North Coast of the Costa Blanca from Calpe to Denia.

SURVIVOR RACEHave you gotten bored with running? Craving something a little different?

Let the Survivor Race get your adrena-lin pumping again! Running through mud, over obstacles and whilst weighed down all await the daring participants of the planned Survivor Race happening in three locations later this year. The first is the 3rd of October in Benissa, the 14th Novem-ber in Parcent and the final is the 5th De-cember in Moraira. Make the most of your Spanish surroundings, by running past them!

Boot camp style running courses are very popular in the UK at the moment, and have started to come over to Spain. Fol-lowing the success of last weeks colour run in Benidorm which in-volved completing the course whilst being pelted with coloured chalk, the Survivor race is sure to go down a storm! All of the Survivor Races will be round local courses but involve obstacles designed to slow you down and make you smile!

Mackenzie Hopson is one of the run-ners and is part of a team with her friends for charity named ‘Make A Smile Junior Warriors. Mackenzie is looking forward to the race and said “Being able to compete in the upcoming Survivor Race in Benissa is something that I have wanted to do for a long time. Creating the Team ‘Make A Smile Junior Warriors’ for this race was a way for us to challenge ourselves and also challenge others to GIVE. Raising aware-ness and support for Make A Smile is really important to me. Helping these kids on the costa Blanca should be important to all of us. Training is hard; running around, jump-

ing, climbing and carrying sacks (some of it up on the farm in Relleu!) we are also asking others in our community to focus on how they can help. We are asking peo-ple to sponsor our team of Junior Warriors that have signed up for the Survivor Race and donate much needed funds so that at the end of the race not only will we have completed a personal achievement, but also achieved something far greater for those kids! Our team is made up of friends

that have given up their own time during the school year and sum-mer holidays to work up on the self-sufficien-cy project in Relleu for Make A Smile”

The event is being organised by Span-ish company Survi-vor-race.es and is designed to test your

endurance, strength, agility, concentration and intelligence.

In previous races there have been mud pits, wall jumps, swinging rings (over wa-ter no less), running up hill with sandbags and even some obstacles that are on fire! That’s one way to make you sweat! The circuit itself is created by ex-servicemen Richard McEnery who works at Aventura Fitness Centre in Teulada as their head strength and conditioning coach.

The top three competitors in the events will be awarded for each category with the traditional gold, silver and bronze. If this sounds like your idea of hell but you’re craving a bit of scahdenfreude (laughing at the missfortune of others) then you can sign up as a volunteer for the events. SPANISH AIRPORT STRIKE PLANNEDFollowing a summer of disruption

for travellers in and out of Spain, air-port staff have this week announced two more air traffic controller strikes for September 26th and October 3rd.

The USCA (Unión Sindical de Con-troladores Aéreos – Union of Air Traffic Controllers) has planned the strikes to both happen on Mondays between 4am to 4pm which will halt all work happening at Spanish airports causing interference for anyone flying on or around those days. Al-though this event is confirmed through the unions, AENA have yet to comment.

These two 12 hour strikes are said to be in protest of the disciplinary sanctions placed on 61 air controllers in Barcelona back in 2010. The air controllers were

accused of paralysing airspace, which caused over 200,000 passengers to be-come stranded.

Following this event, many of the controllers were accused of abandoning their posts, however at a tribunal af-terwards, it was agreed that a high majority had actually not d i s o b e y e d their em-ployers nor abandoned their posts,

according to the Spanish Air Traffic Con-trollers Union.

Airlines said to be most affected by these strikes will be Easyjet and Vueling however anyone using Spanish airports

should expect delays. The last strike just over five years ago caused 600,000 va-cationers stuck just ahead of a national holiday and the Spanish government were forced to call in the army to take over con-trol towers. The planned strike promises to cause less interruption due to the small-er 12-hour windows.

The strikes are being carried out at Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga, Majorca and the local airport, Alicante. These addition-al two dates of strikes follow a summer of disrupted travel due to strikes in France, which caused a knock on affect for many travellers. The Heat was on for the fifth International Charities Fair that took place last Sunday. HEAT FM Spain hosted the entertainment live on air with their usual great music and fantastic competitions. Heat FM also took the op-portunity to speak to the charity organisers throughout the day as well as being able to interview the Major of Benidorm Toni Perez and the British Consul Sarah-Jane Morris. The pair both officially opened the event at mid-day to a large crowd. Sarah-Jane said “It´s very hearten-ing to see so many here, to support those volunteering”.

The Mayor made his speech, which was followed by pupils from the European school in Alicante and the Cruz Roja volunteers who sang a number of songs much to the crowd’s enjoyment. The Consul and Mayor walked around the stalls talking to the charity workers and ex-hibitors too.

The event took place next to the very busy Rastro El Cisne held every Sunday and was organized by Pame-la Dawson Tasker who showed that the local charities and associations from across the Costa Blanca can be brought together with a display of support that means so much to the people living in the area.

Martin Kyme, project manager for Emaus spoke with the Mayor and British Consul about the collection tins that are being used around the area as the charity has ap-pointed Buzz Media (owners of Heat FM Radio and also the Weekly Buzz newspaper). Martin explained “working with the Buzz newspaper is fantastic because the charity gets regular public awareness and coverage of the many

events we have organised to promote the fund-raising for the many children’s homes”. Both the mayor and consul thought the project was an ideal way of creating an independent and regu-lar income for Emaus. Together with the backing of Buzz Media and the Benidorm Series, Martin has secured a solid foundation for the charity fund raising ap-peal named the ‘Euro a Month’

The consulate team and the Vice Consul, Lloyd Millen were there to talk to ex-pats about any issues they had and offer advice. Heat FM radio also interviewed the stall holders and met the charity organisers which included:

Benidorm Samaritans, The Lions Club, The Royal British Legion, Cruz Roja, AECC Cancer Charity, Help International and Alzheimers.

The sponsors of the event was IMED Levante, Berger & Dozetst Lawyers and Z Black. The U3A were responsi-

ble for the very popular traditional English Tea shop.A great day was had by all with plenty of sunshine and

money being raised by the many charities taking part.

GIVING4GIVINGMy names Gary Burr and I founded Giving4Giving three years ago. We’re a Cancer Support Charity with a char-ity shop in La Nucia and have recently opened another in Altea.

Not only do we raise funds from the shops to support local cancer charities but hold different events to raise money, fash-ion shows, bike rides, dog walks, cabaret shows to name a few and have raised and donated 33,340 euros since opening

We normally give the money to char-ities on the Costa Blanca but when one of our volunteers said she would help or-ganise a MacMillan coffee morning, we decided to break with tradition and make a donation so went along and gave them 500 euros from G4G.

It turned out to be a fantastic day

and all the la-dies worked very hard and should be very proud as I believe they raised 3.000 euros and we were only happy to help out as much as we could. We have a few more events planned for the rest of the year and would love to be able to raise 40,000 euros by the end of the year.

WINNING AUTHOR FROM THE US TO TALK FOR THE 4TH YEAR RUNNING

Dr Pransky has been in the field of prevention for over 40 years, preven-tion meaning prevention in crime, addictions, fami-ly dysfunction, community problems and so on.

In 2001 his book, Mod-ello: A story of hope for the inner city and beyond, received the Martin Luther King Storyteller’s Award for the book best exemplifying King’s vision of “the belov-ed community.”

The book is a true transformational story of 2 inner city housing pro-jects replete with violence, crack, drug gangs, abuse, welfare dependency and hopelessness. It describes how they were completely turned around within two-and-a-half years and how people who lived in the most difficult circumstanc-es were reached, came to find hope and changed their lives.

It is the Principles that were shared within these communities that raised their self-esteem, well-be-ing and common sense

that Dr Pransky will be sharing in his upcoming

presentation on the Cos-ta Blanca. K n o w i n g how these p r i nc i p l es work is ben-eficial to everyone.

Dr Pran-sky has been sharing these Prin-

c ip les via his train-ings, books, counseling and consulting for over 20 years now and is an expert in the field. Hence the 6 month professional training course that begins in Albir on 3rd October and ends in April 2016 is sold out again!

Most of the participants attending the flagship pro-fessional training are flying in from the UK, and others from the US, France, Den-mark, Sweden and Norway. This is the 4th year the course has taken place in Albir bringing in much ap-preciated tourism and has put Albir on the map as an international training centre and venue for events.

KLEIN-SCHREUDER SCULPTURE GARDEN

It is one of eight museums in the town of Alfaz del Pi. It is managed by the Klein Shreuder Foundation (non-profit), and is located near the city center. The outdoor museum is fascinating, with over 20,000 square meters with more than 2,400 plant species ex-hibiting 19 fixed sculptures, mostly by Antonio Mari, a well-known sculptor of the Marina Alta as well as other Dutch and German artists.

In 1996 two young Pensioners Johannes Klein and his wife Johanna Schreuder bought some 20,000 sq meters of neglected orange groves, designed to house and built

it on the land.Then Johannes designed the layout of the garden

and Johanna selected Appropriate trees and shrubs, dead fruit trees were removed, the land plowed and some 800 meters of garden path laid, at this Point the neighbors began to wonder if a new airport was under-way!

During the next 4 years 400 rose bushes, 100 palm trees, 60 ficus elastica trees, 400 cypresses, 1000 privet bushes and much more were planted shaping the beau-tiful garden you can visit today. Johannes and Johanna decided that they did not want to keep the garden just for themselves, but wanted to share its beauty with the public so they founded the Klein-Schreuder Foundation Communicidad Valencia in 2003 who continue to run the museum today.

The Museum welcomes the Autumn after a very hot summer period and had reopened its doors to visitors, although this museum is not free it costs 3€ which is surely worth it which is technically a donation as it goes towards the maintenance of this wonderful garden, The park is open to the public on Sundays from 10.00 to 14.00 hours Groups are welcome on week days by pri-or appointment only.

MOORS AND CHRISTIANS FESTIVALMoors and Christian (Moros y Cristianos) Festivals are held in many towns and cities throughout Spain but most predominantly in the southern Valencian Community.

The festivals commemorate the battles which took place for the control of Spain during the period known as Reconquista (from the 8th to the 15th century).

The Moors and Christiansfestival in Altea started on Saturday 19th and goes on until Tuesday 29th Septem-ber 2015.This picturesque town is an easy drive north of Benidorm, around 10 minutes along the N332.

Although the festival has already started and the decorations are up, you havn’t missed to much as the

celebrations really get started from 25th Sep-tember. Sunday is the main day of celebration the ‘opposing forces’ of “Christians” and “Moors” parade through the streets dressed in impressive costumes, painstakingly created for the occa-sion. The costumes of the “Christians” comprise of fur,leather and armour while the “Moors” wear Arabic-style clothes with swirling scimitars and axes. All accompanied by marching bands play-ing rousing music reminiscent of the period.

Mock battles then ensue that everyone has a great time although the ending is of course the same each year! As you might expect, just like any Spanish Fiesta worthy of the name, there is food, wine and of course fire-works.

EXCITING TIMES FOR TERRA MITICA

Next season will be a year of innovations for the Terra Mitica theme park.

The leisure complex has now revealed that they will have a thrilling new attraction for 2016 although few de-tails about it are yet to be revealed we can tell you one thing, that the new attraction will be part the parks “ex-treme path”, ( the rides that give you the biggest adren-aline rush).

Apparently we will have to wait a few months to learn the specifics of this new attraction but rumours have teased the curious thrill seekers that its going to be “high” and is designed for “young people who are parks main

audience.So without any more details we will have to wait for

the official park announcement, the ride will be added to the 37 existing attractions in the park across the four themed areas . The ride will be added to the ‘extreme route’ which includes the most adrenaline rides such as Magnus Colossus, the Phoenix, Syncope, Titánide and Inferno.

It has been a very long time since the park has opened a new jaw dropping ride with the last arriving back in 2007 with the opening of Inferno, over recent years they have opened other attractions such as the spa area.

But this new attraction is not the only innovation for next season. The Aqualandia Group, which acquired the park in 2011, plans to open its first hotel in the resort in the summer of 2016, with the work already underway

with a preliminary investment estimat-ed at over 30 million euros.

It will be named The Grand Luxor Hotel, a four star luxury with a total of

346 rooms which will be built in two phases, with the first opening 226 rooms, a pool, spa and spacious gardens are expected, among other services. It will be situated in the Egyptian area.

BAR OWNERS CAUGHT DRUG DEALING

Agents of the National Police in the operational plan against trafficking of narcotics have disabled a drug retail operation in the town of Benidorm.

Specialized in the fight against drug trafficking agents found two bars where owners were not just selling drinks.

The premises were frequented by people constantly arriving on both foot and by car and within minutes were seen

leaving the establishments without even having a drink. The bar owners seem to have been using the premises as a front for the drug operation.

Upon searching the premises agents found 1422 euros, various tools for drug sales and various narcotic substances in-cluding cocaine, marijuana, speed and pills.

CHARGING STATIONS FIRST IN THE REGIONBenidorm is backing the use of electric vehicles in the city by install-ing two pub-lic charging stations for electric cars, these pow-er points will be the first in the region in, Altea does have some of charging points but they are not installed on the street.

The new charging points may both be ready and available in about a month. The first will be located in the phone booth located in Ruzafa Street, op-posite the Hotel Vista Oro, which will be ready as soon as the wiring is complete, “making this point available as soon as possible”, explained the Councillor for Mobility Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate.

The second points location is yet to be determined however the plan is to introduced the points into the parking

meters, working alongside the operators of the blue zone, they hope to have charg-ing points at all parking meters in the future.

Z a r a t e made the an-nouncement on “Clean Vehicle Day”, which is part of the Internation-al Week of Mobility but m e n t i o n e d that they would not

reach the proposed 20 charging points at present be-cause “currently it is not necessary since there are not many electric cars in Benidorm.” However, “as the popu-larity of electric vehicles increases the number of charg-ing points shall be increased”.

Next to the phone booth and with any parking meters that will be equipped with the service “will have a space reserved for vehicles wishing to use this service.”

World Car Free Day is a day that intends to invite individuals to gather and reflect on the use of cars, raising awareness of its effects to the environment while promoting the use of bicycles and public transport. Calpe last year joined the European Network of Cities for Mo-bility and this year and has been nominated for an annual award. Calpe also celebrated the Day of the Bicycle on the Monday with the par-ticipation of over 300 cyclists of all ages.

World Car Free Day is part of the “European Week for Mobility” which aims to establish new habits of the area and helps raise awareness to issues such as urban mobility, road safety, energy and environment.

Javea Mayor, Jose Chulvi recently an-nounced the return of the popular pro-gramme ‘DON’T BE ALONE AT CHRIST-MAS’ which invites anyone over the age of 65 or pensioners over 60 to spend the forthcoming Christmas season with likeminded people.

The Valencian Department of Social Welfare puts on this popular event for those who are elderly residence of the region and unable to spend the Christmas hol-idays with family and friends.

This year’s event includes a stay in a hotel in Oropesa del Mar from the 23rd to the 27th of December and includes cultur-al activities, medical services and trans-port.

Previous years have proven very pop-

‘Don’t be alone this Christmas’ - says Javea’s Mayor Jose Chulvi

The fourth edition of the Xàbia Tri-athlon takes place this Sunday at the Arenal beach, this year organized by Llebeig Athletics Club, Gurugu Bici-cletes and Xàbia Bikes.

The organizers have the cooperation of the Xàbia Town Hall, the local police, Civil Protection, the Red Cross and over 100 volunteers, and the sponsor, the mu-nicipal water company, Amjasa.

A presentation was made by the sports councillor, Vicent Colomer and Llebeig Athletic Club president, Jaime Escortell, who explained that there will be two tri-athlon events, the sprint (750 metre swim, 20km bike and 5 km on foot ) and Olympic (1500 meter swim, 40 km bike and 10 km on foot).

The Olympic event will begin at 8:30 pm and the Sprint at 11 a.m. The cen-tral departure will be in the parking lot of the supermar-ket Mas y Mas on the Arenal beach where the swimming event will be held. The cycle race will run along the Cami Cabanes and the foot race along the First Montañar.

The organization is ex-pected to have 400 par-ticipants, including two

Paralympic athletes who need special accommodation. Event participants will come from throughout Spain, but espe-cially from the provinces of Alicante and Valencia.

On the occasion of this sporting event, the local police report that between 08.00 and 13.30 there will be traffic restrictions on the Arenal. There will be no access on the Cami Cabanes and its approach roads, it is recommended that drivers should use the route Travesía de les Cansalades in the direction of Benitatxell. Also primer Muntanyar will have the traffic lane Are-nal-Port closed.

The bus stop is moved to the Avenida de la Libertad and the tourist train to calle Rennes.

The long-established English choir have started their new sea-son and celebrated a return to their old familiar surroundings.

They have returned to the pensionistas’ hall in Teula-da for their weekly Thursday rehearsals after the hall has undergone a major refurbish-ment.

They have gone directly into rehearsals for their No-vember concert which will be held on November 7 in the Sa-lon d’Actos in Teulada.

The concert will be titled “Atlantic Conversation” as it features music from both sides of the great ocean.

er said: “The signs are good for a great season - everyone was keen to go and there were new members eager to enjoy the delights of singing

in a very good choir.“The English choir prides itself

on the very wide variety of music it sings. Everything from rock and pop

to classical and show music. Our repertoire includes up-to-date music and even mu-sic centuries old.

“We have more than 30 members, but would wel-come more to help us cope with a busy concert season.”

U3A Marina Baixa Dining OutLast Friday, 52 Members and Guests of the U3A Marina Baixa, enjoyed a lovely Tapas lunch, at La Mezquita Restaurant, in the mountain Village of Beniarda.

The meal consisted of 9 different courses of Tapas, including a selection of postres, with unlimited wine, beer, water and coffee, which was excellent value and enjoyed by all.

Prior to the lunch, everyone was invit-ed to the beautifully restored home of Gary & Susan Bell, in the village of LÁbdet, for coffee and home made cakes….many thanks from all who attended!!

This was yet another excellent social event organised by Ann & Liz. Well done Ladies!

Howard is Javea U3A’s membership secretary and has previously amused members with stories about his life as a model-maker, including lifting the lid on se-cret and sexy trademarks of some of the architects he worked with.

In the end it was a closely-fought con-test with Team “Bright Things” eventually coming out on top due to the skills of mem-bers Peter and Gill Atkinson, former quiz group organisers Stan and Jeni Oldfield, and super-keen quizzers Bill and Audrey

Quinton.While they picked up the top

prize, nobody went away disap-pointed, thanks to a tasty half-time meal served up by the golf club’s restaurant.

The next Quiz Night will be held at the golf club on Thursday No-vember 19 with questions set by Jean Miller.

2015 has seen Germany pinched at the post as the ‘top investment target in Europe’ by Spain, meaning that proper-ties in the Costq Blanca area have nev-er been more lucrative. A recent poll by Knight Franks has found that 27% of 150 investors who were questioned selected Spain as their preferred investment for the next 12 months. This poll shows that estate agents all over the area will also start to see an influx of buyers as well as increased properties being listed. This is a great time to find your Spanish dream home!

These statistics are echoed by the increase in visitors to the Costa Blanca region as well which is estimated to have risen by 40%. Footfall at local events and shopping centres in the region has also seen a significant increase over the last

consecutive six quarters. Estate agents around the Benidorm area have also re-ported increased enquiries as they have found that Costa Blanca properties are some of the fastest to recover.

Just behind Spain in the poll is fel-low European Union member Germa-ny with 25% of investors selecting there to invest. This is likely following the €30 billion invested in property during 2015, however property in Spain has shown a quicker and higher increase and a faster turnaround in the market as well. Wheth-er you’re looking for a small townhouse, a private villa, a city center flat or a beach side bolthole, there has never been a better time to make your Spanish dream become a reality. The statistics also show that rental properties are being snapped up all over the region as more people are

choosing to have a Spanish home on the side. Renting a property in Spain is a great way of testing out the area before making the leap; so choosing a long-term rental might be your best option.

Trailing way behind in the investor’s poll was Poland, France, Russia and the Nordic Regions, all of which scored less that 10%. Spain has suffered drastically recently with following the credit crunch and market crash which halted the prop-erty market all over the region. Still now, if you drive around certain areas in Spain, you’ll find half built roads, derelict houses and uninhabitable flats as the crash came after a property boom, meaning many new and exciting properties were planned but quickly halted. However more and more signs are coming out that the market is turning around and finally on the rise signi-

REVIEWIt’s all change for Britain’s best selling van. The Transit is so popular it ac-counts for almost one in five of all new vans sold and has become the level by which other vans are judged. So get-ting it right with this new generation Transit is crucial.

But what exactly is the Transit Custom you may be asking? Well in order to differen-tiate the r a n g e , Ford is sp l i t t i ng the Tran-sit line-up. So the s t a n d a r d one tonne model is now re-n a m e d T r a n s i t C u s t o m while the bigger two tonne mod-els will remain Transit.

Both share the new Ford ‘kinetic de-sign’ styling though. We’ve seen it on Ford cars like the latest Focus and the adoption onto vans has worked surprisingly well. The Transit Custom certainly has a more upmarket appearance than the previous version, athough it has lost some of its an-gular and tough charm.

Interior quality is a big step up with a similar cabin to the Ford Focus and im-pressive levels of refinement. It’s com-fortable with a forgiving ride while the 2.2

TDCi engine is quiet, even at motorway speeds. This is one van it’s a pleasure to spend time in.

Short and long-wheelbase models are available, the former of which has an over-all length of 4.97 metres and the latter 5.34 metres. The loadspace is designed to ac-commodate 6.0-cubic metres with a full

bulkhead fitted, meaning it can carry three Euro pallets loaded to 1.0-metre high.

The space between the wheel arches is best in class, allowing for 8x4ft board to be load-ed flat to the floor. There are double cab versions available and

a useful Kombi minibus variant which can carry nine peo-ple. It’s a good alternative to the more ex-pensive Ford Tourneo Custom.

The Transit Custom has set a new benchmark in the van market. It’s streets ahead of the competition in every aspect and is easily the most car-like of pan-el vans, both in terms of driving and re-finement. Yet it remains as practical and cheap to run as ever making it quite simply the best van you can buy.

Visit to Country Ribs in Albir located directly on the beach front with stunning views across to Calpe. Ideal for the whole family Country Ribs is very popular with the kids, as an American Diner they love the taste of the most famous ribs, and burgers.

The menu choice offer something for everyone and some of the most popular dishes are the ranch style chicken and the juicy steaks the menu has much more and also a selection of their specialities with six great COMBOS. The variety is amazing my choice was the COUNTRY RHAPSODY this caught my eye as it includ-ed Hungarian Goulash together with a mixture of Chicken, Lamb, Spare Ribs and Pork Kebabs. The metal dish that served the food was huge and was filled with the sides of potato wedges and chips. I can honestly say the amount of food in the COMBO was enough for 3 or 4 people. Being meat lovers this combo was perfect, lamb chops cooked over the BBQ together with the Chicken breast, the spare ribs and ke-babs made the display of meat was simply incredible not to mention the dish of Hungarian Goulash strategically positioned in the centre of the display.

My guests ordered a variety of other popular meals, grilled chicken, cheese and bacon burger and the star of the show was the full rack of baby back ribs with a choice of 4 tasty sauc-

es. The size of the rack of ribs simply amazed me it took over the plate, served with the Jack Daniels & Coke sticky BBQ sauce. The meat was falling off the bone and was perfectly cooked complemented with the tangy original JD & Coke sauce a smokey but sweet BBQ flavour.

Our bench style table had plenty of space to sit our group of five adults plus the attachment of a high chair to the end of the table that was clamped in place by the very friendly and helpful staff. The restaurant was taken over by families so it was great to see that there was no shortage of high chairs and the mums and dads could enjoy their meals while the smaller ones were also takin part at the table.

Mushroom Risotto

Preparation1. Soak the porcini mush-rooms in hot water for 10 minutes, then drain well. Heat the oil in a large, heavy based saucepan and add the onion and gar-lic. Fry over a gentle heat for 2-3 minutes, until sof-tened. Add the chestnut mushrooms and fry for a further 2-3 minutes, until browned.2. Stir in the rice and coat in the oil. Pour in the wine and simmer, stirring, until the liquid has been ab-sorbed. Add a ladleful of the stock and simmer, stir-ring again, until the liquid has been absorbed. Con-tinue adding the stock in this way, until all the liquid has been absorbed and the rice is plump and tender.3. Roughly chop the soaked porcini mushrooms and stir into the risotto,

along with the parsley, but-ter and salt and pepper. Serve with freshly grated Parmesan.

WineSmooth dry Italian whites such as Soave and Gavi work well. If the mushroom content is predominantly porcini try an aged Italian red such as Barolo or vin-tage rosé Champagne.

Leading up to the next James Bond ad-venture, Spectre, there’s been a lot of talk about the latest in a long line of memorable theme songs. We only recently learned that British crooner Sam Smith will lend his pipes to “Writing’s on the Wall,” as the tune is titled. At the time of print Sam had only released a teaser of the new song on his Twitter account but the single is to be released worldwide on September 25 through Capitol Records and the film it appears in will be released October 26 in the U.K.

“This is one of the highlights of my career,” Smith said in an earlier statement confirming his involvement in the project. “I am honored to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part

of this iconic British legacy and join an incredi-ble line up of some of my biggest musical inspi-rations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.”

Smith unveiled this snippet, and it really is just that, on his Twitter account on September 21, and while there isn’t a ton to dig into here, this does give you a taste of what’s to comeIt does sound rather like what you expect the theme from a James Bond movie to sound like. There are soaring strings, swooning move-ments, and the whole affair is quite dramatic in nature overall.

Whether you love it, or loathe it, Facebook is here to stay. Our kids are on it and our grandpar-ents are on it, we make plans on there and we keep in touch on there, but Facebook is in for a big change, and how will it be perceived? Mark Zuckerberg, Face-book’s chief executive announced on Tuesday that they are working on a ‘dislike’ button, how-ever it won’t be used in the same way to the cur-rent ‘like’ button. He has specified it is to be used to pass on empathy when you see a bad or negative post. For example, if your Facebook friend posts about feeling stressed or the unfortunate loss

of a family pet, ‘like’ and ‘comment’ will no longer be your only options to pass on your sympathies through the World Wide Web.

The announcement sent the cyber world into a frenzy with suggestions about Facebook spread-ing negativity and being more able to ’cyber-bully’ with this new one-click disapproval. Others sug-gested that it would make Facebook a ‘darker’ so-cial media; who want’s to post a picture of their cat

if they thought it was go-ing to be disliked?

Zuckerberg has, in the past, said that they would always stay away from a dislike

button, for fear of the similarity to Reddit (a media sharing site), which uses up and down thumbs to allow users to vote how popular an item should be. “What they really want is the ability to express empathy. Not every moment is a good moment,” said the so-cial media mogul during a Q&A at the Facebook headquarters. Pets CornerHuge numbers of tick eggs hatch each spring, and the young ticks climb onto grasses and other vege-tation. Their sticky shells help them to cling to passing animals, includ-ing your adventurous pet dog.

Ticks quickly climb down the hair, attach to the skin, and begin to suck blood, only dropping off hours or days later when they are engorged. In the meantime, any microorganisms that were hitching a ride inside this insect traveler are transmitted to your dog through the tick’s mouth. Here are some tick-prevention tips: During the tick season (April through September), limit your dog’s exposure to known tick-infested areas. Ticks often hide in tall grasses and dense vegetation. Use a tick preventive during the spring and summer months. Several products on the market kill both fleas and ticks (and

why not knock out both at the same time?). You can apply these products monthly to the skin at the back of your dog’s neck. Ask your veterinarian to recommend the most effective product for your dog.

Examine your dog for ticks daily during tick season. If you suspect he has been romping in a tick-infested area, examine him for ticks immediate-ly. Be sure to check inside and behind his ears and around his eyes, all fa-vorite tick hiding places.

To remove a tick, follow these steps: Use a pair of tweezers to grasp the head of the tick where it attaches to the skin. Wear gloves if you plan to use your fingers to remove the tick. Pull on the tick gently and steadily. If you yank the tick away from your dog too quick-ly, you’ll leave part of the tick’s mouth behind, which can cause an infection.

In about 20 to 30 seconds, the tick’s mouth will release its grasp and the tick will come away cleanly. Dab some disinfectant on your dog on the bitten area, being extremely careful if you’re around your dog’s eyes. Kill the tick by placing it in alcohol. Save the dead tick in a resealable plastic bag, labeled with the date on which the tick was found. This may sound weird, but if your dog becomes ill, you may need to identify the species of tick that bit him. Never remove a tick with your bare hands, and never crush a tick between your fingers. If you do, you put yourself at risk of contracting Lyme disease or one of the other tick-borne diseases. If your dog becomes ill and you recently found a tick on him, seek veterinary attention immediately.

Obviously, there are various beliefs regarding death, and many people feel it is simply passing on to another place.

When someone dies, the conscious mind comes to terms with it relatively quickly, possibly within a week or two. The uncon-scious mind takes much

longer. Bereavement is there-

fore the unconscious mind trying to sort out all the changes that take place. For example, the future planned for two must now be for one; how to survive in a couple orientated soci-ety; is there the motivation, energy or even interest to carry on.

There is no such thing as “normal” bereavement; everyone has their own

variation. Quite often, the first feeling is that of being stunned. This may be less if the deceased was ill for some time or it may be

heightened if the death is sudden.

Funerals should be sad and are an important trig-ger for the bereavement to get under way. Seeing the body of the deceased is an important matter for

the people who are close. Without that, the uncon-scious mind may refuse to accept that the person is dead.

This may be directed at the medical staff, themselves, or at the deceased for leaving.

If it is a partner who has died, the sur-vivor may have a loss of identity. One day she is part of a couple and the next she is single. Loneliness is one of the fears which now becomes a reality.

The final stage is letting go. This is

when the mind is ready to carry on with life.

The bereaved has a sense of clarity that has been missing for months or years, energy (and libido) returns, and an individ-ual emerges.

Some bereaved have practical prob-lems, particularly if they are elderly. Sur-vivors who are men may not have the ex-perience of looking after themselves and need training.

Bereavement is a difficult time and can take years to complete. The normal pro-cess is about two years but there is no set time limit. Though it is difficult, it is impor-tant not to rush it, or delay it. Being una-ble to complete it can be serious and may need professional help.

Brush and floss. Ideally, you should brush your teeth af-ter every meal. At the very least, brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily. Brushing minimizes the accu-mulation of bacteria in your mouth, which can cause tooth decay and gum disease, Novey says. Flossing, too, helps maintain strong, healthy gums. “The bacteria that builds up and causes gum disease can go straight to the heart and cause very serious valve problems,” Novey explains. Unhealthy gums also can cause your teeth to loosen, which makes it difficult to chew and to eat properly, he adds. To maintain a healthy smile, visit the dentist at six-month inter-vals for checkups and cleanings.

Wash your hands. Washing your hands before preparing or eating food, af-ter going to the bathroom, after coughing or sneezing, and after handling garbage, goes a long way toward preventing the spread of bacteria and viruses. Kapow! Tyson Fury As Batman

Tyson Fury enjoys making a spectacle at press confer-ences.

Ahead of his world heavy-weight title fight with Wladimir Klitschko, the self-proclaimed “Gypsy King” has attempted to get under the skin of the champion with a number of witty one-liners and aggres-sive remarks.

Fury took it to the next level in London on Wednesday, arriving in a Lamborghini dressed as Batman to the amusement of the watching media.

A man dressed as the Joker then proceeded to approach the table before “Batman” jumped over the top and put

his old rival on the floor.

Klitschko initially applaud-ed Fury to his seat, but he looked less impressed at the second stunt and will be looking to hand out some punishment to the Dark Knight when they meet for his belts on October 24.
