National Institute of Open Schooling
1.CONSTITUTIONAL STATUS Education is the part of concurrent list of Indian
Constitutional. Accordingly, Both state and centre have been
vested with the responsibility to impart the education.
Education is imparted in two modes
- Face to Face
-Open & Distance Education It is because of formal mode is not available to all, NPE-86 recommended for Open and Distance Education.
2.WHAT IS NIOS1979 : Setup as a pioneer project namely “Open School” under CBSE, New Delhi.
1989 : National Open School (NOS) was setup and was vested with the authority to examine and certify students registered with it up to pre-degree.
2002 : Re-christened as the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) in order to extend its scope and functioning including Training and Research.

Through a Resolution (No. F.5-24/90 Sch.3 dated 14 September 1990 published in the Gazette of India on 20 October 1990), the National Open School (NOS) was vested with the authority to register, examine and certify students registered with it up to pre-degree level courses.

5. HOW DOES NIOS FUNCTION?
NIOS operates through a network of five Departments, 20 Regional Centres , 01 Sub-Regional Centres , 1 cell and 6900 Accredited Institutions (Study Centres) in India and abroad. It has a current enrolment of about 2.6 million students at Secondary and Senior Secondary levels which makes it the largest open schooling system in the world.

10.WHAT DOES NIOS DO?
NIOS provides opportunities to interested learners by making available the following Courses/Programmes of Study through open and distance learning (ODL) mode.
Open Basic Education (OBE) Programme for 14+ years age group, adolescents and adults at A, B and C levels that are equivalent to classes III, V and VIII of the formal school system.
