May I cut vegetables into small pieces for an Israeli salad on Shabbos?
One of the 39 categories of melachah which are prohibited on Shabbos is tochein, which means “grinding”. Halachah prohibits cutting vegetables into pieces which are small enough to be swallowed easily without chewing.
In a case of need, such as when cutting up food for a small child, one may rely on one of the following leniencies:
1. Cut the food into small pieces close to the start of the meal, or during the meal. There is some debate regarding the definition of “close to the start”, but certainly the half‐hour before the meal is acceptable.
2. Cut the vegetables with an unusual implement, and on a tabletop rather than a cutting board.

PARSHAS QUESTIONS VA’EIRA BY: THE RAV
First Aliyah: (6:2) Hashem had identified Himself to Moshe with His four‐letter name throughout last week’s parsha; why is He now “reintroducing” Himself to Moshe with that Name? Second Aliyah: Why are only the families of the first three tribes – Reuven, Shimon, and Levi – listed? Third Aliyah: (7:7) Why is it necessary to know Moshe’s and Aharon’s respective ages when they spoke to Pharaoh? Fourth Aliyah: Why was Pharaoh’s heart hardened after the magicians were able to duplicate the blood plague (7:22), but his heart wasn’t hardened when they were able to replicate the frog plague? Fifth Aliyah: (8:10) Why is it significant that the dead frogs were gathered into stinky piles? Sixth Aliyah: (8:19) Why specifically for the plague of “Arov,” wild animals, does Moshe emphasize the distinction between the Egyptians and the Jews? Seventh Aliyah: (9:24) Why specifically for the plague of Hail does the Torah testify that this was the first time Egypt had experienced this phenomenon – does this imply that they had experienced the other plagues previously?

READATHON EXPLANATION
For 5 weeks A.H.A.V.A., a non‐profit to promote English Literacy in Israel, runs a rewarding Readathon for students in 1‐8th grade. We are inviting students from Elementary and Jr. High schools to join Israeli kids who take up the challenge to read English for 5 weeks. Each registered participant is encouraged to read as many books and pages as possible. According to age, grade and English level, readers strive to reach higher reading levels.
The Israelis are excitedly looking forward to the prizes awaiting them at the Awards Ceremony. Some groups of Toronto readers will get together to celebrate their achievements at the end as well. Of course anyone in Israel at the time of the Awards Ceremony is more than welcome to attend! The Israeli school whose students have read the most pages is also awarded a prize of a small library of 25 books.
REGISTER ON LATER THAN SUNDAY, JANUARY 14TH TO TAKE PART:
