3rdImus – Yeoncheon Youth Exchange Program
By: Christian Allen S. Alejo
It was a long journey since we’ve been part of these youth programs (Imus Leadership Development Program, andImus – Yeoncheon Youth Exchange Program). We learned and experienced many things that really benefited us.These programs have really served its purpose – to develop the youth to become efficient builders of a progressivecommunity in the future. These programs have harnessed my potentials and skills to be a better person. They mademe see things in a broader and more realistic context. I deeply appreciate the efforts given by the government tocreate and administer these programs. I’m very grateful that the government has recognized the potentials that iswithin in the youth and put efforts to develop these pot entials.
Before the youth exchange program, I felt alone. I miss everything in my high school years. I miss the laughter, naughtiness and friendship. Doubtlessly, these are the things that give me true happiness. This is very different from
the ordeal I’m currently in – college. Life is much more serious in college, but with the help of the youth exchangeprogram, I have seen everything in a more pragmatic approach. Primarily, the youth exchange program’s purpose is tointroduce the Korean culture to us. But, the memories and friendship with our Korean friends have also beenaccentuated.
The cold air, the snow, unfamiliar places, foreign-speaking people, signages that I can’t read – Korea is a very differentplace at first, but with the help of our Korean friends, it is “home”.It was early in the morning when we arrived inKorea. Mr. Kim, the t eacher of the Korean students, was there to fetch us and be w ith us for the rest of t heprogram. We travelled from the airport to Yeoncheon County for almost two hours. We met our Korean friends in amuseum there. I was very nervous at that time, but when we have met our Korean friends there, their hospitabilityhad shown to me that there is nothing to be nervous of. At first, I move and speak very cautiously because I think I

might do or say something that is wrong in their culture. Eventually, as the days pass, I became more comfortablewith everyone. I even been able to play jokes on them. We have visited many beautiful places in Korea. Mostimportant of those, is the monument that commemorates the heroism of the Filipino soldiers during the “Korean War”.During our third and fourth day in Korea, we lived in the houses of our host families. I’m very thankful for thehospitability that their family had shown to us. I even feel that I’m one of them. I feel home. During these days, Ihave understood their culture more. It’s not much different from our culture. I may say that they have a conservativeculture and they treasure their family very much. There were also cultural differences between us, but thesedifferences are not hindrances. By the conversations we have, we have been able to interpret and explain thesedifferences. Our stay in Korea might be short, but it is enough to learn their culture and made friendship with them. Itwas unhappy to leave Korea, but the memories we made would always be there. Also, I’m sure that this was not theend for we would also make good memories in the Philippines.
It was the start of the new term in our school when our Korean friends arrived here in the Philippines. I was lucky for Ihave nothing to be worried of. I can spend my time perfectly with our Korean friends. During our travel to Imus City, there are lots of questions my partner was asking me. At this moment, I realized that I amaccounted for introducingto them the Philippine culture. It was my turn to show to them how beautiful the Philippine is. Exactly, the Philippinesis very beautiful. However, the poverty here is clearly obvious. At first, I was worried for they may not like ourcountry, but eventually, I have seen the smile in their faces which signifies that they’re enjoying here. We have visitedmany places and ate many foods here in the Philippines. One of these is the Tali Beach in Nasugbu, Batangas. Thisbeach had clearly shown that we are blessed with natural wonders. I have seen in their faces that they’re reallyimpressed with the beauty of the Philippines. At this point of time, I recognized and felt sad about those Filipinoswhodidn’t appreciate this kind of beauty. However, I’m still proud that there are foreigners that still recognize howbeautiful the Philippines is. It was evening of January 6, 2014 when our Korean friends leave. Our time may not beenough to know each other. However, it is certain that w e have created strong bonds with each other.
Through the youth exchange program, I have learned the Korean culture. I also became more aware of our society, and its connection and relation to other culture. Through this program, I gained many friends whom I could rely onestablishing a better community. These friends may be foreign, but there is no foreign in a world where everybodyshares and contributes for the development of it. We are all inhabitants of the earth. We are all humans. Thus, webelong to the same race. Fighting!
