Global Food Safety – Evolution or Revolution?
• Global food trade is expanding which, provides consumers with access to a wider variety of foods all year round.
• Expanding trade has brought the diversity of food safety regulations and
standards in different countries into sharper focus. (i.e. China)
• Building common ground for food safety regulation through both public and private initiatives is helping to achieve the simultaneous goals of improving food safety and facilitating trade.
Global Food Safety – Evolution or Revolution?
• Countries are tackling the issues of food safety and trade through learning from each other’s successes in managing food safety.
• Governments & industry are working together to reach consensus on accepted standards. (i.e. GFSI, Organic, etc.)
• Retailers worldwide are beginning to mandate that suppliers meet a level of food safety in their operations that comply with the criteria defined in an internationally recognized standard. Basic GMP or HACCP audits are insufficient to provide retailers with the confidence they require
Global Drivers & Risks for Food Safety
• Health Risks – approx 76 million people get sick per year • 5000 deaths occur per year • Product recalls • Customer demands and satisfaction • Food safety hazards and genetically modified food concerns • Demand for supply chain confidence • Brand protection • Consistent delivery of quality service/product • Gain preferred supplier status and access to new markets • Operational efficiency.
• Kellogg’s stated in a newspaper article that the past peanut butter issue costs its company 70 million dollars. That was the cost to just one company.
• A Colorado meat company recalled 19 million pounds of ground beef, saying the food could be infected with E. coli bacteria.
– After government investigators uncovered concerns with its
slaughterhouse practices. The voluntary recall by this Food company was the second largest pullback of meat products in U.S. history
– The voluntary recall by this Food company was the second largest

manufacturers, retailers and consumers with potentially deadly consequences
