Warm Up Jan 8th and Jan 9th, 2015

Imagine traveling deep below the surface of the Earth; describe what you think you might see and feel.

This week’s MISSION!

• We will become earth scientists as we dive deep into the layers of the earth and explore what they are made of and investigate why the continents have moved so much since earth was created.

Page 7: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

Supplies….

• Who remembered to bring in their supplies for our Earth model?

• If we do not get these supplies in, we will not be able to make our models….

• Please bring these items in by Friday!

Page 8: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

Discovery Ed Video….• We are about to watch a video that discusses

the Earth’s interior….• As you listen to the video, write down 3

important facts you hear from the video into your notebook

• We will share these after the video… • http://app.discoveryeducation.com/player/vie

6th Grade Standard…

• Standard 6.E.2.1: Summarize the structure of the Earth, including the layers, the mantle, and core based on the relative position, composition, and density.

• Where is this standard posted in our room?

Page 10: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

How do we know what is inside the earth?

• Let’s read pg 71-73

Page 11: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

Vocabulary…

• Add these vocabulary words to your notebook now….

• Composition• Seismology• Seismic waves• Density• 10 minutes to copy the words above and their

definitions from the textbook

“Earth’s Layers Foldable”

Page 13: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

Let’s create a “slice” of earth

• You will be given a slice of earth• You will complete the information

inside • Use the class reading set to get the

facts• We will work together to complete

the outside!

Earth’s Structure Foldable

• Glue, tape or staple this into your interactive notebook….

Page 15: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

Write in notebook:

• The Earth is mostly composed of rock

Page 16: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

Write in notebook:

• 75% (3/4) of the Earth’s surface is covered by water (liquid water and frozen water)

Page 17: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

Write in notebook:

• Composition of the Earth:• 4 Distinct Layers:– Crust– Mantle– Outer Core– Inner Core

Page 18: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

Density

• Challenge question: Remember the density column?• Which substance went to the bottom?• Which went to the top?

Knowing what we now know about density, take a look at the 4 layers of the earth in the next slide and tell me which would be most dense, and which would be least dense.

Page 19: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

4 Layers of the Earth –which layer is most dense?

Page 20: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

4 Layers of the Earth –which layer is least dense?

Page 21: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

Increased density as we go to the center of earth

• The 4 layers have different densities which causes them to separate

• Least dense = crust• Most dense = inner core

Page 22: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

Video

• “A Journey Inside the Earth” (6.27 minutes)• Journey inside the Earth

Page 23: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

4 corners ….on a blank page!

• Draw this diagram in your notebook now….

Page 24: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

Write in notebook:

• The Earth’s Crust:• Thin, solid outer layer• Least dense layer • Contains plates that move over time• 2 types: continental crust• oceanic crusts

Page 25: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

Write in notebook:

• Oceanic Crusts:• under the oceans• More dense (because the ocean compresses it)• Thinner

Page 26: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

Write in notebook:

• Continental Crust:• under the continents• Less dense• Thicker

Page 27: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

Write in notebook:

• The Earth’s Mantle:• below the crust • Made of silicon, magnesium, iron, oxygen• CONVECTION CURRENTS: Thick, hot,

convective layer

Page 28: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

Write in notebook:

• The Earth’s Outer Core:• Liquid layer made of nickel and iron• Spins around the inner core• Earth’s only totally liquid layer

Page 29: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

Write in notebook:

• The Earth’s Inner Core:• Solid iron and nickel due to extreme

pressure• Densest layer• The inner core + the Earth’s rotation,

creates the Earth’s magnetic field

Page 30: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

Compass….

• How does a compass work?• How does it always point North?

Page 31: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

Music Video

• Mr. Lee “Layers of the Earth”• Earth's Layers

Page 32: Welcome to Science Jan 8 th, 2015 (A day) Jan 9 th, 2015 (B day)

• In each layer you will include : Made up of- Density- Height-Color Crust-blueCore-YellowOuter Core-OrangeInner Core-Red

Color lightly so the facts can be read

Pay close attention to the rap video

Dojo points for the best rap performance!

I will play the song once and then volunteers will perform parts of the song for points!
