Ash Wednesday — March 1The Lenten journey from the ashes of death to resurrected life begins on the first day of Lent, Ash Wednesday, which signifies a time to turn around, to change directions, to repent. This first day of Lent reminds us that unless we are willing to die to our old selves, we cannot be raised to new life with Christ. The first step of this journey calls us to acknowledge and confront our mortality, individually and corporately. In many traditions, this is symbolized through the imposition of ashes — placing a cross on one’s forehead. During the imposition of ashes the words: “You are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19) are repeated again and again. We are to remember that we are but temporary creatures, always on the edge of death. On Ash Wednesday, we begin our Lenten trek through the desert toward Easter.

- An excerpt from the Companion to the Book of Common Worship (Geneva Press, 2003, 109-110)

Please make plans now to attend the worship service on Ash Wednesday, March 1, beginning at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary.

MARDI GRAS 2017!!! Sunday, February 26

Come celebrate the last Sunday before Lent in worship at Westminster on Sunday, February 26, 8:20 am and 10:50 am. Sam Levine and his New Orleans’ Jazz Band will start rocking out ten minutes before each worship hour. The Laudate and Westminster Choirs will then join them to lead worship with such favorites as “Down by the Riverside,” “Just a Closer Walk with Thee,” “This Little Light of Mine” and several other southern classics. This great celebra-tion is always a favorite at WPC, so bring family and friends, and help us wor-ship with spirit on Sunday, February 26.

Life at Westminster

Lenten Devotionals available in the ParlorLent is not just the season for giving things up. It is an invitation to pause and regroup – to shake the dust off and take new steps. To help us with this, this year we are using a piece developed by Sanctified Art.

Sanctified Art is a collective of artists in ministry who create resources for worshipping communities. They have designed a calendar to be colored in day by day using the companion devotional as a guide. Each day they invite us to read the scripture text. They have written reflections on the text, and the imagery we are to color. We and they hope this daily rhythm of reading, reflecting, and coloring will become a powerful spiritual practice for you this season.

You can learn more about their work at www.sanctifiedart.org.

Spring New Member Classes to Begin March 12Twice a year, new member classes are held for those who want to explore membership or have discerned they are ready to join this community of faith. Our spring series of classes will begin March 12, 2017. All interested in membership are encour-aged to attend. Westminster’s life and mission, and the many opportunities for growth in faith, discipleship, and service will be shared, as will be Reformed faith, theology and worship, Westminster’s church structure and governance in the Presbyterian Church (USA), and the abundant avenues for learning, fellowship, and involvement.

If you are interested in learning more about these classes and the new member process at Westminster, please contact the Rev. Heidi Hudnut-Beumler (615-292-5526; [email protected]), or Elder Jim Hartman (615-383-8759; [email protected]).

If you would like to participate in the spring new member classes, please sign up through the church office with Trisha Biggs (615-292-5526; [email protected]).

Volunteer OpportunityPreston Taylor Ministries offers job shadowing opportunities for 5th-12th grade students over their Spring Break each year. Spring Break in the Marketplace provides a one-on-one experi-ence with a volunteer who is willing to spend 2-4 hours show-ing a student his/her workplace and teaching a little about that career. Providing a student with different experiences gives an idea of what a career could look like and the sacrifices needed to get to that career. On top of the introduction to a career, our hope is that each student also has positive interaction with a caring adult.. This year we will be sending 40 students out into the workforce and we need more mentors than ever.

Here are some specifics:• Dates: March 21st-23rd• Times: Mornings or Afternoons (2-4 hour time commitment)• Transportation: if you can pick up, that is great; if necessary, we can provide transportation• PTM will make sure we have a background check on every mentor.

If you have any questions, contact Collin Spindle (903-327-3295; [email protected]). You can sign up online at www.prestontaylorministries.org/event/spring-break-marketplace/

Living Out the Word: Clean Water for Neighbors Close to Homesubmitted by Sandra W. PlantEarly on the morning of February 2, trained volunteers from WPC loaded Dennis Williams’ truck with everything needed to install the 18th home-based water purification system in north central Tennessee. Their destination was the hilltop home of Linda H. in the Long Creek community in Macon County. Until that day, Linda’s only source of water was a nearby spring where the water was unsafe for drinking, cooking and much more.

This hard-working mother and grandmother has bought bottled water or hauled water from clean sources for more than 30 years. But not anymore. The Westminster team finished installation and testing by late afternoon. A beaming Linda surveyed her new system, saying over and over, “This is unbelievable, remarkable, just too good to be true.”

Bringing clean water to our neighbors in Appalachia is part of the larger mission of the Synod of Living Waters. Anyone interested in learning more about getting trained or providing financial support can contact Dennis Williams ([email protected]).

This group of WPC volunteers traveled to Macon County on February 2 to install a water purification system for Linda H. From left to right, James Fritz, Lauren Anderson, Carson Salyer, Bill McClanahan, Linda H. (homeowner) holding Alfie, Dennis Williams, and Johnny Wilmore, (friend from Long Hollow Baptist in Sumner County).

Life at WestminsterA Wonderful Women’s Retreat 2017This year we shifted the timing of our women’s retreat and just had a won-derful time this February.

Lena Levendoski, Colleen McCanless and Joanna Thomson made up the wonderful committee that made it all happen. Heidi Hudnut-Beumler pro-vided us with rich content. Rachel Pence and Janet Kirchner supported us with beautiful music for our worship times. Katherine Hande Smith, Claire Coenen, Lena Levendoski, Melinda Coles and Lane Harvey all shared their leadership in wonderful workshops.

From our Friday night fellowship at Joanna’s home, to our all day event on Saturday at Scarritt Bennett, we had nearly 60 women not only having fun fellowship, but also deep and faithful conversations.

We hope you will join us for the next one!

11th Grade Class Dinner a Success! The 11th graders recently met at McDougal’s for some fellowship, laughs, and delicious chicken. It was a great time had by all!

Campus Renovation Update After 23 years of faithful service, our old boiler finally bit the dust. It stopped working just days before it was to be replaced. This is probably the most prayed over piece of HVAC equipment in the history of Westminster!

We are richly blessed with a brand new, high efficiency boiler. Here’s hoping (and praying) it lasts 22 years like its predecessor!

Say goodbye to the old boiler... ...and say hello to the new boiler!

Instructed CommunionSunday, March 19 OR March 26, 2016

9:45 – 10:30 am

This year, due to limited space, we will again offer this workshop during Sunday School. Parents come with their children to ONE of these two Sundays.

If you are not able to attend this year, you are more than welcome to join us next year.

One of the most important promises we make as a congre-gation is to nurture our children in the faith and to strength-en their ties with the household of God. The Book of Order of the Presbyterian Church (USA) says, “Baptized children who are being nurtured and instructed in the significance of the invitation to the Table and the meaning of their re-sponse are invited to receive the Lord’s Supper, recognizing that their understanding of participation will vary according to their maturity.” (W-2.4011b)

Instructed Communion is for first graders and their par-ents. We are also inviting second graders and older children who were unable to be part of an earlier series. Some of you have participated previously with older children and can look forward to this rich experience with your younger child.

BRING: A memento of your child’s baptism for your child to share with us (photo, candle, gown, etc.)

We look forward to sharing these wonderful experiences with your family during the Sunday School hour on Sunday, March 19 OR March 26.

Thomas Kleinert, is German.

Adult Education All classes meet at 9:45 am unless otherwise specified.

Throughout the Adult Education program we work to cultivate an environment in which diversity is valued and different opinions are respectfully engaged. Our Sunday morning classes are designed to be communities where members and visitors are invited to join the journey growing deeper in faith and fellowship. Some classes are geared more for “age and stage” of life, while others are intentionally intergenerational. During the year, special classes and speakers are arranged for the whole church to experience learning together. All are welcomed to become part of what God is doing through the education ministry at Westminster. We seek to nurture our members at all stages of their faith journey in ways that strengthen Biblical, spiritual, and moral foundations and affirm what we believe as Reformed Christians.

Life at WestminsterCome Give Thanks and Celebrate!Rachel Pence, Westminster’s new Associate Pastor for Young Adults and Young Families, will be installed at a service on March 5th at 3:00 pm. The service is conducted by the Presbytery of Middle Tennessee and officially establishes the relationship between a pastor and the congregation.

Many years ago, Rachel perceived a call to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament. Over the years, her journey has been a long and arduous one in discerning that call from God. It is a call that is both very personal and yet needs to be confirmed by the community. Tests, oral examinations, countless papers, internships, clinical pas-toral education, and constant prayer and reflection have been part of her journey. At our last meeting of the Presbytery, Rachel preached, and then was examined on the floor of Presbytery. There was a great Spirit in the air as she was enthusiastically received into our Presbytery. She will be ordained by Saint Augustine Presbytery at Riverside Presbyterian Church in Florida, the congregation where she grew up in faith and understanding. The following week, we will participate in the official start of her ministry at Westminster. Rachel has already given us a glimpse of her God-given gifts.

Rachel says, “Inspired by Christ’s self-giving love, I want to be a power-sharing leader. I want to accompany people on this journey of ministry, holding a light beside them.” Let’s share in Rachel’s hope by worshipping and rejoicing with her as she begins her ministry with us. Join us in the temporary Parlor after the service to celebrate!

Peace,

Donovan
