Q. 1 : What is the chief end of man ?A. Man's chief end is to glorify God1 and to enjoy him forever.2

Q. 2 : What rule has God given to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him ?A. The word of God, which is contained in the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments,3 is the only rule to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him.4

Q. 3 : What do the scriptures principally teach ?A. The scriptures principally teach what man is to believe concerning God,5

and what duty God requires of man.6

Q. 4 : What is God ?

1. Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31; Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. Revelation 4:112. Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever. Psalm 73:25-26 3. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 2 Timothy 3:16 4. For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. A. God is a Spirit,7 infinite,8 eternal,9 and unchangeable,10 in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth.11

Q. 5 : Are there more Gods than one ?A. There is but one only,12 the living and true God.

Q. 6 : How many persons are there in the Godhead ?A. There are three persons in the Godhead, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,13 and these three are one God, the same in substance, equal in power and glory.14

Q. 7 : What are the decrees of God ?A. The decrees of God are his eternal purpose, according to the counsel of his will, whereby, for his own glory, he has foreordained whatsoever comes to pass.15

Q. 8 : How does God execute his decrees ?A. God executes his decrees in the works of creation and providence. 7. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. John 4:24 8. But will God in very deed dwell with men on the earth? behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house which I have built! 2 Chronicles 6:18; Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD. Jeremiah 23:24 9. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. Psalm 90:2 10. For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. Malachi 3:6; Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. James 1:17 11. And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. Exodus 3:14; Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite. As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one. 1 Corinthians 8:4 13. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Matthew 28:19 14. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen. 2 Corinthians 13:14 15. According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:…In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: Ephesians 1:4,11


Q. 9 : What is the work of creation ?A. The work of creation is God's making all things of nothing,16 by the word of his power,17 in the space of six days, and all very good.18

Q. 10 : How did God create man ?A. God created man male and female, after his own image,19 in knowledge, righteousness, and holiness,20 with dominion over the creatures.21 Q. 11 : What are God's works of providence ? A. God's works of providence are his most holy,22 wise,23 and powerful preserving and governing24 all his creatures and their actions.25

Q. 12 : What special act of providence did God exercise towards man in the estate in wherein he was created ? A. When God had created man he entered into a covenant of works with him, promising life upon condition of perfect obedience,26 forbidding him to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, upon the pain of death.27

Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. Hebrews 11:3 18. And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. Genesis 1:31 19. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. Genesis 1:27 20. And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: Colossians 3:10; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Ephesians 4:24 21. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. Genesis 1:28 22. The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works. Psalm 145:17 23. This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working. Isaiah 28:29; O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches. Psalm 104:24 24. Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; Hebrews 1:3; The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all. Psalm 103:19 25. Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Matthew 10:29-3026. Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. Romans 5:18-19 27. But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. Genesis 2:17; For the wages of sin is death… Romans 6:23


Q. 13 : Did our first parents continue in the estate wherein they were created ? A. Our first parents, being left to the freedom of their own will, fell from the estate in which they were created by sinning against God.28

Q. 14 : What is sin ? A. Sin is any want of conformity unto or transgression of the word of God.29

Q. 15 : What was the sin whereby our first parents fell from the estate wherein they were created? A. The sin whereby our first parents fell from the estate wherein they were created was their eating the forbidden fruit.30

Q. 16 : Did all mankind fall in Adam's first transgression ? A. The covenant of works being made with Adam, not only for himself but for his posterity,31 all mankind, descending from him by ordinary generation, sinned in him and fell with him in his first transgression.32

Q. 17 : Into what estate did the fall bring mankind ? A. The fall brought mankind into an estate of sin and misery.33

Q. 18 : Wherein consists the sinfulness of that estate whereinto man fell ?

A. The sinfulness of that estate whereinto man fell consists in the guilt of Adam's first sin,34 the want of original righteousness,35 and the corruption of his whole nature, which is commonly called Original Sin,36 together with all actual transgressions which proceed from it.37

Q. 19 : What is the misery of that estate whereinto man fell ? A. All mankind, by their fall, lost communion with God,38 are under his wrath and curse,39 and so made liable to all miseries in this life,40 to death itself,41 and to the pains of hell forever.42 Q. 20 : Did God leave all mankind to perish in the estate of sin and misery ? A. God having out of his mere good pleasure, from all eternity, elected some to everlasting life,43 did first openly manifest and apply the benefits of his election in the Edenic Covenant,44 wherein he covenanted by sovereign grace to deliver them out of the estate of sin and misery and to bring them into an estate of salvation by a redeemer.45

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: Romans 3:10 36. And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. Genesis 6:5 37. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: Matthew 15:19 38. And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. Genesis 3:8; So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. Genesis 3:24 39. Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. Ephesians 2:3; For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. Galatians 3:10 40. Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins? Lamentations 3:39 41. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23 42. Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: Matthew 25:41 43. According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Ephesians 1:4 44. And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Genesis 3:15 45. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: Romans 3:21-22


Q. 21 : Who is the Redeemer of God's elect ? A. The only Redeemer of God's elect is the Lord Jesus Christ,46 who, being the eternal Son of God, became man,47 and so was and continues to be God and man in two distinct natures, and one person,48 forever.49

Q. 22 : How did Christ, being the Son of God, become man ? A. Christ, the Son of God, became man by taking to himself a true body 50 and a reasonable soul,51 being conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, in the womb of the virgin Mary, and born of her,52 yet without sin.53 Q. 23 : What offices does Christ execute as our Redeemer ? A. Christ, as our Redeemer, executes the offices of a prophet,54 of a priest,55

and of a king,56 both in his estate of humiliation and exaltation.

Q. 24 : How does Christ execute the office of a prophet ? A. Christ executes the office of a prophet in revealing to us,57 by his word and Spirit,58 the will of God for our salvation.59

46. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. 1 Timothy 2:5-6 47. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 1:14 48. Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen. Romans 9:5 49. But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. Hebrews 7:24-25 50. Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil. For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. Hebrews 2:14,16 51. Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. Matthew 26:38 52. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. Luke 1:31,35 53. For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Hebrews 7:26 54. For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. Acts 3:22 55. As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. Hebrews 5:6 56. Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. Psalm 2:6 57. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. John 1:18 58. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 1 Corinthians 2:13 59. And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 3:15


Q. 25 : How does Christ execute the office of a priest ? A. Christ executes the office of a priest in his once offering up of himself a sacrifice to satisfy divine justice,60 and reconcile us to God,61 and in making continual intercession for us.62

Q. 26 : How does Christ execute the office of a king ? A. Although Christ now rules over the universe as the Son of God,63 he shall execute the office of King, as the Son of David, the Christ, when he comes to establish his theocratic kingdom.64 At present Christ rules, as Head, over his people, the Church,65 the elect citizens of the kingdom, which is an earnest of his inheritance as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.66

Q. 27 : Wherein did Christ's humiliation consist ?

60. How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? Hebrews 9:14 61. Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. Hebrews 2:1762. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. Hebrews 7:2563. And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation: And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou? Daniel 4:34-35; For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. Colossians 1:16-17 64. When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: Matthew 25:31; And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. Revelation 11:15 65. And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone. Ephesians 2:20; And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. Colossians 1:18 66. Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. Ephesians 1:14; Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him. Hebrews 2:8; And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war…And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. Revelation 19:16


A. Christ's humiliation consists in his being born, and that in a low condition,67

made under the law,68 undergoing the miseries of this life,69 the wrath of God,70

and the cursed death of the cross,71 in being buried, and continuing under the power of death for a time.72

Q. 28 : Wherein consists Christ's exaltation ? A. Christ's exaltation consists in his rising again from the dead on the third day,73 in ascending up into heaven,74 in sitting at the right hand of God the Father,75 and in coming to judge the world at the last day.76 Q. 29 : How are we made partakers of the redemption purchased by Christ ? A. We are made partakers of the redemption purchased by Christ by the effectual application of it to us77 by his Holy Spirit.78

Q. 30 : How does the Spirit apply to us the redemption purchased by Christ ?

67. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. Luke 2:7 68. But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, Galatians 4:4 69. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Isaiah 53:3; Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. Hebrews 12:2-3 70. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Matthew 27:46 71. And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Philippians 2:872. And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 1 Corinthians 15:473. And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. 1 Corinthians 15:14 74. So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. Mark 16:19 75. Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places. Ephesians 1:20 76. Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. Acts 1:11; Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. Acts 17:31 77. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: John 1:12 78. Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost. Titus 3:5


A. The Spirit applies to us the redemption purchased by Christ,79 by working faith in us,80 and thereby uniting us to Christ in our effectual calling.81

Q. 31 : What is effectual calling ? A. Effectual calling is the work of God's Spirit,82 whereby, convincing us of our sin and misery,83 enlightening our minds in the knowledge of Christ,84 and renewing our wills,85 he does persuade and enable us to embrace Jesus Christ, freely offered to us in the Gospel.86

Q. 32 : What benefits do they that are effectually called partake of in this life ? A. They that are effectually called do in this life partake of justification,87

adoption,88 and sanctification, and the several benefits which in this life do either accompany or flow from them.89

Q. 33 : What is justification ?

79. It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. John 6:63; And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Corinthians 6:11 80. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Ephesians 2:8 81. That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, Ephesians 3:17 82. Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began. 2 Timothy 1:9; But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: 2 Thessalonians 2:13 83. Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Acts 2:37 84. To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. Acts 26:18 85. And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh: Ezekiel 11:19 86. For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake. And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost: 1 Thessalonians 1:5-6 87. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. Romans 8:30 88. Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will. Ephesians 1:5 89. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: 1 Corinthians 1:30


A. Justification is an act of God's free grace wherein he pardons all our sins 90

and accepts us as righteous in his sight,91 only for the righteousness of Christ imputed to us and received by faith alone.92

Q. 34 : What is adoption ? A. Adoption is an act of God's free grace93 whereby we are received into the number and have a right to all the privileges of the Sons of God.94

Q. 35 : What is sanctification ? A. Sanctification is the work of God's free grace,95 whereby we are renewed in the whole man after the image of God,96 and are enabled more and more to die unto sin and live unto righteousness.97

Q. 36 : What are the benefits which in this life do accompany or flow from justification, adoption, and sanctification ? A. The benefits which in this life do accompany or flow from justification, adoption, and sanctification are assurance of God's love, peace of conscience,

The outward and ordinary means whereby Christ communicates to us the benefits of redemption are his ordinances,211 especially the word, sacraments, and prayer;212 all of which are made effectual to the elect for salvation.213

Q. 89 : How is the word made effectual to salvation ? A. The Spirit of God makes the reading, but especially the preaching of the word, an effectual means of convincing and converting sinners,214 and of building them up in holiness and comfort,215 through faith, unto salvation.216

A. That the word may become effectual to salvation, we must attend thereunto with diligence,217 preparation,218 and prayer,219 receive it with faith220

and love,221 lay it up in our hearts,222 and practice it in our lives.223 Q. 91 : How do the sacraments become effectual means of salvation ? A. The sacraments become effectual means of salvation not from any virtue in them or in him that does administer them,224 but only by the blessing of Christ and the working of his spirit in them that by faith receive them.225

A. The sacraments of the New Covenant are Baptism228 and the Lord's Supper.229 Q. 94 : What is Baptism ? A. Baptism is a sacrament wherein the washing with water in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,230 does signify and seal our ingrafting into Christ, and partaking of the benefits of the New Covenant, and our engagement to be the Lord's.231 Q. 95 : To whom is Baptism administered ? A. Baptism is not to be administered to any that are out of the visible church till they profess their faith in Christ and obedience to him,232 but the infants of such as are members of the visible church are to be baptized.233

Q. 96 : What is the Lord's Supper ? A. The Lord's Supper is a sacrament wherein, by giving and receiving of bread and wine according to Christ's appointment, his death is showed forth,234 and the worthy receivers are, not after a corporal and carnal manner, but by faith, made partakers of his body and blood, with all his benefits, to their spiritual nourishment, and growth in grace.235

A. The whole word of God is of use to direct us in prayer,247 but the special rule of direction is that form of prayer which Christ taught his disciples, commonly called the Lord's Prayer.248

The preface of the Lord's Prayer (which is, Our Father which art in heaven) teaches us to draw near to God with all holy reverence and confidence,249 as children to a father,250 able and ready to help us,251 and that we should pray with and for others.252 Q. 101 : What do we pray for in the first petition ?
