Animal Cell Slide1. Place a drop of methylene blue on your slide
2. Rub the inside of your cheek with a cotton swab then rub it on your slide
3. Place your swab in disinfectant. DO NOT put in on the table
4. Carefully lower a cover slip over the sample, use a pencil to help you
5. Make sure you have no air bubbles
Scientific DrawingMake a scientific drawing of an animal cell.
Rules of scientific drawings: Use only straight lines Do not colour or shade in Label each part with a straight line. No arrow head

Plant Cell Slide1. Peal off a thin layer of onion tissue and place on a slide
2. Carefully spread the piece of tissue out so that there are no folds
3. Place a couple of drops of iodine on the onion tissue
4. Carefully lower a cover slip over the sample, use a pencil to help you
5. Make sure you have no air bubbles

Cell structure and function
Each part of a cell has its on role to play in the working of it.
Using the cards match each cell structure to its function.

Vacuole
The control centre of a cell.
This controls what substances can enter and leave the cell.
The jelly like filling of a cell. This is where chemical reactions take place in a cell.
The rigid firm coating found around a plant cell. It helps to keep the cell shape.
Contain a green chemical called chlorophyll which absorbs sunlight. Allow plants to make their own food.
Can store sugar and water. Helps to control the water content of plant cells

Similarities and Differences?
In your jotter…Microbial Cells
Microbial cells do not have a nucleus.
Examples of microbes
Bacteria: Lactobacillus, E. coli
Some cells are specialised for a particular job.Below are pictures of plant, animal and bacterial cells.
They all look different because they have different jobs to do.
Can you think of reasons why they look this way?

ChallengeYour challenge is, in pairs, to create a 3D model of a cell
using the materials provided.
Paper GluePlastic tubs PensBalloons Card (different colours)Jelly Sandwich bags
(medium/small)Peas FoamPaper plates (big/small) SpongesMarbles Bubble wrapLollypop sticks
Once all models are complete you will each take turns going round looking at each others and giving feedback.
First, plan your 3D cell model. You may look at the materials available, but ask first if you want
out your seat.
