While Kanakapura Road’s connectivity to the NICE and Bannerghatta Roads has made it a realty hub, its cultural, educational and spiritual status has ensured that it is among the best addresses in Bangalore....
Kanakapura Road, once the backyard of nature, is today a concrete jungle. The approximately 55km stretch that
starts from Kalasipalya, leads up to Kanakapura town. Previously known as Kanakanahalli Road, the area was
said to be a forest. But from days — when only bullock carts were seen and two buses plied — to emerging as a
prime locality in Bangalore, the road has undergone a rapid change. Join Shruti I L in finding out why today it is
the preferred destination of not just popular builders but also industrialists, hoteliers and artists...
Yediyur Lake
You’ll get to see Thalaghattapura, Kaggalipura and Harohalli lakes on this road. Yediyur Lake however is
the most accessible one. It is a joggers paradise even. The lake was renovated and a walking path was
constructed around it in 2006. A separate section has been made here to immerse idols during the
Ganesha festival.
Residential hub
Apartments and townships are found mushrooming all through the year and the construction of metro,
which will pass through commercial areas like Jayanagar and several other areas located in the city
centre, has only increased the demand for the same. In fact, there are also plans of setting up a
Disneyland-like 4D technology driven Krishna Lila Park in the ISKCON township located here. Kanakapura
Road leads to both Bannerghatta Road and Nice Road, that offers a traffic free journey to Mysore. This
has further upped its utility quotient. The presence of German retail giant Metro comes as an added
advantage to the residents.
Schools and Colleges
The road is home to educational institutes of international repute. Delhi Public School, Alpine Public
School, Kumarans, Jain International, Jyothi Kendriya Vidyalaya, APS institutions, Dayanand Sagar
College of Engineering and Yellamma Dasappa Institute of Technology are the prominent ones. Valley
School in which Bollywood actor Imran Khan studied is also tucked away in the interiors of
Kanakapura Road.
The Shankaraa Art foundation
The Shankaraa Art Foundation, which is one of the cultural hotspots in the city also has Kanakapura
Road as its address. Dotted with contemporary sculptures, this greenscape is dedicated to the
promotion of our heritage and culture. Started by dancer Rashme Hegde Gopi, this venue has to its
credit several well attended dance, music and theatre performances.
Tataguni Estate
Tataguni Estate that sprawls over 450acre is housed on Kanakapura Road too. Locals say
that the trees in the estate provided essence for perfumes which were exported to
England. It was owned by Russian painter Svyatoslav Roerich and his actress wife,
Devikarani. There was, however, a dispute over its possession following their death and it
is now under government control. However several other estates and farm houses on this
road are rented out for film and serial shooting.
Art of living Ashram
What puts this road on the international tourist map is Sri Sri Ravishankar’s Art of Living
ashram. Spread over an 85acre land, the ashram consists of a meditation centre, school
and an ayurvedic college and hospital among other things. The ashram in Bangalore
became operational in the 1980s.
Sri Raghavendra Benne Dose Hotel
This eatery that serves crispy butter dosas Davangere style, should most definitely find a
place in every foodie’s list. The batter that is made of five different kinds of rice grown in
Davangere and the coconut chutney is what makes the dosas served here different.
Mandaki puri and Karji Kai are the other popular dishes on the menu. Guhantara, a cave
resort is also situated further down the road. For non-vegetarians, Gowdara Mudde Mane
is the place.
Banashankari Temple
The famous Banashankariamman temple that is believed to have been built in 1915 is
also the other famous landmark on this road. In close proximity to this temple is the
Banashankari bus stop and a market that residents of JP Nagar, Jayanagar and
Banashankari frequent for fresh fruits and vegetables.
Khoday’s Factory
While IT companies are yet to open shop here, Kanakapura Road is home to the
prominent brewery and distillery unit, Khoday’s. Hegde and Gole, a watch factory, was
also located on this road. However, the factory, where world famous cricketer Prasanna
is said to have worked, is no longer operational. The Power Grid Corporation of India
and the Karnataka State Sericulture Research and Development Institute operate from
Kanakapura Road.
