From Here Your Business Can Grow Anywhere

Perched on the edge of the Atlantic, Galway is unique.

In 1919 the first trans-Atlantic flight landed in Connemara near the Marconi wireless station which had been built twelve years earlier.

Air travel and wireless communications: two of the biggest influences on the way we do business today. Both had their first European land fall in Galway.

While geographical constraints may have been the reason Galway was a bridge between Europe and North America in the 20th century there are many more compelling reasons for locating a business here in the 21st century.

Why Galway?

Galway is a University city with a highly-educated and creative workforce.

It is a global centre of excellence for medical technology companies, IT services and the Marine with a vibrant and growing start-up infrastructure.

Talent

Galway ranks second highest in Ireland for both the proportion of graduates and the proportion of PhDs in its population.

With a student population of over 22,500 Galway has a well-educated, skilled workforce which is drawn to the county by its strong enterprise culture and lifestyle.

Galway attractively combines a cosmopolitan diversity with a distinctive regional culture. The city has the highest proportion of non-nationals – almost 20% – of any area in Ireland.

The National University of Ireland Galway and Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology work closely with multi-national employers in the area to ensure that science, engineering and bio-medical education is world-class and relevant to their needs.

NUI Galway has moved up to number 249 in the QS world university rankings and is also 48th out of 1,336 educational institutions in Europe in terms of Horizon 2020 funding received, and second overall in Ireland.

Galway’s third level institutions and Education and Training Board have established a strong but adaptable infrastructure of life-long learning which encourages active employer and employee involvement in skill acquisition.

The pool of talent created by the cluster of long-established Med-Tech and IT companies has in turn attracted more foreign businesses to set up here alongside a vibrant start-up community.

And because Galway is such an attractive place to live people here have the ambition to create and work in world class enterprises with global reach on their doorsteps.

“Mid-size companies are choosing to avoid Dublin as it’s dominated by big players.”

“The regional cities present a better opportunity for companies like us to stand-out from the crowd yet they have a deep pool of talented people who have opted for the lifestyle they have to offer.”

“The high calibre of candidates presenting for some roles allowed the company to re-think its strategy and devolve more responsibility to its Galway operation sooner than planned and more business functions will follow.”

John McArdle Director Ipswitch EMEA Centre of Excellence (Came to Galway in 2016)

“What makes Galway stand out as an attractive location for Medtronic is its strong talent pool as well as the spirit of collaboration with industry, academia, local authorities, national government agencies and the business and hospitality sectors.”

“As a Centre of Excellence for manufacturing, research & development and customer engagement for the company’s Cardiac and Vascular Business, it is important for us to have the opportunity to engage locally with NUIG and GMIT on research and new product development programmes and education programmes ensuring a strong talent pipeline for the future.”

Start-Ups

Galway’s existence as a centre of commerce since medieval times is an indicator of the deep spirit of enterprise embedded in its culture.

In recent years this has been nurtured by the close collaboration between Galway Chamber, NUI Galway, GMIT, WestBIC, the Local Enterprise Office as well as regional and national development agencies.

In 2016 Galway was the third most popular county for start-ups with just over 1,000 new businesses registered during the year.

Several new co-working and incubation spaces opened recently in the city including the Galway Chamber-backed Porter Shed in the Galway City Innovation District (GCID), SuperPixel Labs, Startlab and WorkBench. These join well-established facilities like Galway Technology Centre, Innovation Hub at GMIT, SCCUL Enterprise Centre, StartX6 and Ignite Business Innovation Centre at NUIG.

Galway Chamber intends to expand the footprint of the GCID in the city as well as launch similar initiatives in the surrounding towns which would complement centres such as The Hub in Headford and The Burren Enterprise Centre.

Galway’s Local Enterprise Office is very active in support of start-ups offering a range of development courses, mentoring and funding to support embryonic companies.

Enterprise Ireland’s New Frontiers programme offers early-stage funding opportunities and Údarás na Gaeltachta is very active in job creation in the Irish-speaking areas of the region.

Digital, Marine and Ag-tech accelerator programmes are being launched in Galway in 2017.

Industry and academia combine to make Galway a

Global R&D Hub.

Research

Galway’s University and Institute of Technology have over 2,000 post-graduates and staff engaged on research projects in areas such as regenerative medicine, data analytics, the marine, medical technology and sustainable energy.

The Regenerative Medicine Institute’s research programme has a mission to conduct basic research in fundamental stem cell biology and to translate and commercialise research outputs by developing regenerative medicine therapies for diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus and osteoarthritis. REMEDI partners closely with other institutions and corporates around the world including Creganna-Tactxx Medical, Smith & Nephew and Orbsen Therapeutics.

The Insight Centre for Data Analytics at NUIG brings together a critical mass of more than 200 researchers from Ireland's leading ICT centres to develop a new generation of data analytics technologies in a number of key application areas.

Based at NUI Galway, with six academic partners and over 24 industry partners – Medtronic, Boston Scientific and Aerogen amongst them, CÚRAM is establishing a global hub of research expertise in medical device technology.

The Galway Medical Device Technology centre based at GMIT is involved in the design and development of in-vitro simulation systems capable of replicating vascular functions.

The Ryan Institute NUIG leads the Galway Bay based R&D programme SmartBay with academic partners DCU, UCD, NUIM & the Marine Institute – based in Galway, IBM and Intel.

Industry too plays a part in this infrastructure with significant R&D capability in Medtronic, Boston Scientific, HP Enterprise and many others as well as number of smaller spin-off companies focussed on bringing new products to market.

In an innovative move HP, working with WestBIC, agreed to allow small local businesses review its extensive portfolio of unused patents to see what business opportunities may be undiscovered there.

“At a time of great change in the IT industry the staff in Galway had the ambition and vision needed to adapt to these changing needs and transform from software manufacture to a high-tech campus incorporating R&D and leading edge IT services.”

“Our track record for talent development and business performance generated credibility and confidence in Galway as a place HP wanted to invest in.”

“The availability of talented people to fill roles such as software engineers, developers, data scientists and project managers has been a major factor in this growth.”

Dr Chris Coughlan HP Enterprise (Came to Galway in 1971)

“‘The Galway area has a strong third level infrastructure with NUI Galway and GMIT”.

“Our products are technically challenging to manufacture and having access to the brightest mechanical and bio-medical engineers is very positive.”

“That skillset and the flexibility of the workforce allowed production to ramp up very quickly and achieve productivity levels higher than most of the company’s other facilities. “

Life On The Edge

Galway’s quality of life sets it apart – making it home to many cultures

Life in Europe’s most westerly city is inspiring yet relaxed. It’s full-on when you want it but allows you to immerse yourself in its culture and absorb its energy at your own pace.

Drawing from a rich cultural heritage of the city and its unique countryside – Irish-speaking Connemara to the west, the dramatic Burren to the south – Galway has long been designated Ireland’s capital of culture.

This was officially acknowledged with its designation as a European Capital of Culture 2020.

Over 20% of the population come from overseas, attracted to work or to learn and live at an easier pace of life, with less commuting and at a lower cost.

In addition to being a UNESCO City of Film, Travel & Leisure magazine named Galway its Friendliest City in the World in 2015.

Galway has been awarded an environmental EU Green Leaf for 2017 and has been nominated a European Region of Gastronomy in 2018.

Sitting in the centre of the Wild Atlantic Way, Galway’s outdoor life and activities make the most of its dramatic countryside.

Six of Galway’s secondary schools rank in the top fifty in Ireland when it comes to university admissions and NUI Galway has moved steadily up the world university rankings over the past number of years.

Because so many people want to make living in Galway work for them they bring huge amounts of energy and creativity to their working lives as evidenced by the start-up culture but also in the constant evolution of the larger businesses.

Accessibility & Infrastructure

Galway is well served with rail services and the expanding motorway network allows speedy, comfortable access to Dublin, Limerick, Shannon and further afield.

The city is less than an hour’s drive from two international airports including Shannon with direct flights to North America, UK and Europe.

The westernmost city in Europe is also the closest to North America. With US Immigration clearance at Shannon, Galway is less than an hour from the US border.

Dublin Airport with further direct flights to the Middle East, Europe, UK and North America is two hours’ motorway drive.

High speed wired and wireless internet access is widely available in Galway city and the major county towns while the government-sponsored rural broadband scheme is being rolled out across the county.

Galway Technology Centre is the first innovation hub in the West of Ireland to bring 1 GBPS fibre internet to over 40 tech companies in its shared space.

The Galway City Innovation District will expand from the Porter Shed to additional premises in the city centre offering further high-tech office accommodation for businesses establishing a footprint in the region.

Plans are advanced for the construction of 26,000 sq m of office space located between Galway Port and the city’s public transport hub offering downtown office space to complement the business parks on the outskirts of the city.

The IDA has developed a circa 67 acre Oranmore Science & Technology Park adjacent to the M6 and M18 motorways for larger enterprises and has extensive lands available for incoming and expanding companies at its flagship Business and Technology Park in Parkmore East.

Apple’s decision to locate a data centre at Athenry was influenced by the availability of alternative energy from the recently completed Galway Wind Park west of the city.

Galway is gearing up for further expansion.

Three international airports all within two hours drive.

2020−2040 Vision And Beyond

Galway’s future success requires the interaction of a dynamic regional capital with a thriving region.

Galway Chamber’s collective vision is to make Galway the model in Ireland for inclusive innovation and economic growth, fuelled by the energy, drive, culture and diversity of the people of Galway city and county.

Its goals are to:

Promote and grow quality jobs for all

Cultivate dynamic, resilient communities across the county of Galway

Improve quality of life for all

Key to achieving that vision is the proposed Galway Development Authority which will be charged amongst other things with the rapid deployment of strategic enterprise zones within and outside the city focussed on High End Manufacturing, Advanced Technology, International Services as well as Marine Technology and Finance.

The Atlantic Economic Corridor is aimed at rebalancing economic and population growth away from the east coast of Ireland and Galway is at that heart of that development.

That growth will in turn be balanced between Galway city and its rural neighbours to ensure deep-rooted and sustainable development across all communities.

Galway will be the model for inclusive innovation and

economic growth.
