Twenty-three years ago, two friends sat over a glass of wine and discussed the

possibility of a lifelong learning program for Brenau University. They had worked together running Elderhostel (now Road Scholar) programs for a few years and found that they worked well together. One friend was working on her doctorate in gerontology, and the other was looking for a new adventure in which to sprout her creative wings. From that friendship, BULLI was born.

We know that many of you have made lasting relationships through BULLI, so in 2018, we’d like to celebrate those friendships, whether with an individual or a group, and the rich benefits you have

discovered by learning together. Whether your friendship was born over a meal at a Dinner Together meeting, discovered through a lively discussion in a Great Decisions class, deepened and strengthened over a BULLI international trip or just nurtured through this unique environment of learning and exploring together, your story is valuable to us. We would like to share those stories over the next year.

Here are the contest rules:1. Submit a story of 250 words or less,

including how you met and what you’ve experienced together through BULLI.

2. Submit a photo of you and your friend(s) together. If the photo was taken during a BULLI class or travel adventure,

so much the better.3. Your story could be made into a

video for the Center for Lifetime Study web page and/or featured in future issues of the BULLI-tin or BULLI Ebits.

4. One story, voted on by the BULLI community, will win the grand prize of a free BULLI membership for the 2018-2019 academic year. Three runners-up will receive gift vouchers for two BULLI classes.

5. Submissions should be sent by Jan. 2, 2018, to [email protected].

Over 20 years ago, a group of Hall County residents gathered in the Wilson Room of the John W. Jacobs Building to talk about the idea of a lifelong learning program at Brenau. The group included local

visionaries and business leaders, lifelong Gainesville residents and individuals who were new to the area.

Some of the attendees had visited lifelong learning programs in other places. Others had attended Elderhostel programs throughout the country and had experienced firsthand the benefits of lifelong learning. All of them, however, were dedicated to the idea of creating a unique opportunity for learning on the Brenau University campus.

From their dedication, BULLI was born.

we invite you to become a part of the bulli family.

MONDAYThe Literature of How We Got Here: A Combination of American History, Literature and Biography10:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Emerson said famously, “History is but the biography of a few great men.” Perhaps it could be amended to, “History is the story of a few outstanding persons.” This course will feature a sweeping look at the great American experiment through the history and biographies of a handful of leaders, activists and writers. We will begin with American Colonial and Federal literature (Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, etc.) We will examine Frederick Douglass and the 19th century era of the anti-slavery movement and then move on to the 20th century works of Henry James all the way to John Updike and beyond.

But fear not! The only work you are asked to read is Ron Chernow’s Alexander Hamilton. You will want to start early because it’s quite thick (yet easy and fun to read.) The other material will be provided: essays, excerpts and a few poems (surprise!). Supply fee of $10 to be paid at first class.

Dr. Bill Coates is pastor of First Baptist Church on Green Street. He

holds a Ph.D. in American literature from the University of South Carolina. Bill is a great lover of BULLI students because, as he says, “They’re so fun and interested in learning!”

A Stress-Free Introduction to Spanish Conversation1 – 2:30 p.m.

The approach to this class is practical, relaxed and stress-free – in short, it’s a simple way to start communicating in Spanish. After a brief explanation of Spanish pronunciation, you will quickly begin to learn words and phrases for everyday conversation. Limited grammar is introduced only as necessary for understanding the material. There are no formal written exercises, but to benefit from practice time in class, some outside study is encouraged. As you learn more

words and phrases, you will also get tips and shortcuts for maximizing communication with what you already know (including English!). Aspects of Hispanic culture are also discussed to help you be polite and appropriate when you speak Spanish.

Spanish for Gringos (4th edition with CD) by William C. Harvey is the basic resource for the class and should be purchased before class begins (approximately $20 for the text and a CD). It is designed for self-study, so what is not covered in class can be studied independently.

Tamra Glenn has taught high school Spanish for over 30 years. She also taught at the junior college level. Since retiring, she has enjoyed engaging with the Hispanic community in Gainesville through her volunteer work and has previously taught a BULLI class.

Finding Our Home in the Universe, Part II2:45 – 4:15 p.m.

What is going on in the skies above you? What revelations have new technology enable us to discover? This course is a continuation of a previous look at our skies, though you do not have to have taken that course to enjoy this one. Join us as we look at the wonders of the universe through history and how that helps us find our place in the universe. How has it changed in the last few decades? We will be using imaging from the great new earth and space telescopes and computer simulations. Prepare to be awed!

Jeffrey Jones is a retired physician and lifelong science nerd, astronomy and cosmology freak. He is also a member

of BULLI.

TUESDAY

Poems For All of Us1 – 2:30 p.m.

The BULLI Poetry group, the BULLI Bards, want to show you that poems can be enjoyable and edifying. Discover for yourself that understanding poems can be more straightforward than you thought.

The Bards will offer traditional poems, as well as their own original ones, with commentary on the poem writing process. Class sessions will address subjects such as Poems for Young People, Spirituality, Healing, Environmentalism and Mature Adults. Join us to experience poetry as you’ve never known it!

BULLI members Bill Early, Jeff Jones, Ann Gillespie, Diane Rooks and Sandra Hogue will present this class. Early and the BULLI Bards have been reading, writing and studying poetry for a number of years. They meet monthly for discussions and critiques of poetry.

The Lost Empire – Byzantium2:45 – 4:15 p.m.

Nearly all of us have heard of the decline and fall of the Roman Empire, but it actually continued in Eastern Europe, which was referred to as the Lost Empire or the Forgotten Empire. In this course, we will look at the transformation of the Roman Empire into what we now call the Byzantine Empire, the longest lasting state in history, which was centered in what is now Istanbul. The focus of the course will be on the momentous people, places and events of the mid-first millennium. We will discover people larger than life, the largest church in Christendom for over 1,000 years, the transformation of Italy into a wasteland and maybe even a comet hitting the earth. We will find the foundation for our western legal tradition and the preservation of ancient Greek philosophy amid the tension of the rise of Christianity into a state religion.

Wayne Wilson has been studying Roman history for close to 40 years, the last 10 focusing on the Byzantine phase of the Roman Empire. He attended school at the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan

University and worked for the Medical School of the University of Michigan for nearly 30 years. He retired in 2012 and moved to Northeast Georgia.

Intro to Cryptocurrencies: Risks and Opportunities

10:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Remember when no one had heard of the Internet? Even those who “got in” early had no idea how much it would change the world! Many now believe that cryptocurrencies are our next “Internet-like” revolution. Available to any computer user anywhere in the world, they offer universal units of value that cross borders effortlessly. For example, a BitCoin spendable in China is just as easily spendable in Russia or Atlanta; not so, yuan, rubles, or dollars. And because of enthusiastic demand and limited supply, investors who have purchased, held or traded cryptocurrencies have made excellent profits (and sometimes, lost them)!

We’ll learn what cryptocurrencies are, how they are bought and sold, why they matter and are being adopted

by banking, business, health care and government, and how one person like you can explore the online world of cryptocurrencies without risking a penny. At no point in the course will money be exchanged, any purchase encouraged or investment recommendation offered. The goal of the course is to survey the field and equip class members to stay informed as cryptocurrencies rapidly become a common part of our world.

To fully benefit from the course, attendees must already have confident, basic computer skills, with internet experience including browsing for information, purchasing on sites such as Amazon/eBay and paying bills online. Bringing your laptop or iPad with wireless capability to class is not necessary but encouraged!

Dr. Kent Murphey is the Minister of Administration at First Baptist Church of Gainesville. With an education in accounting and 25 years of experience managing the business

affairs of the church’s ministries, he has kept pace with the rise of cryptocurrencies and continues to carefully make his own profitable, personal investments among the many cryptocoins available.

Theater on Italian Soil: A History1 – 2:30 p.m.

Theater delights, entertains and challenges us as it mirrors aspects of the world around and within us. Have you ever wondered how and why the Romans adopted the traditions of Greek theater and how they made it their own? Do you know why the Italians still have a profound influence over theatre today? Join us in this historical tracing of Greek theater in Sicily, Etruscan in Tuscany, Rome, Medieval, Renaissance, down through 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

Dr. Stanley Longman professor Emeritus, University of Georgia

former department head, drama. His PhD is from the University of Iowa. He is a specialist in Italian Theatre and drama.

Appalachian Culture: It’s Not an Oxymoron2:45 – 4:15 p.m.

Whar ere ya gittin off to? You should be sitting in this class if you don’t understand this phrase. And if you think “I don’t keer ifin I do” means someone doesn’t want to do something, you don’t understand Appalachia! From its history as the seat of the Cherokee Nation to the Scots, Irish and Germans who settled here, the history of north Georgia is a fascinating one. Why are mountain people considered by flatlanders as “backward”? Whether you’re a flatlander that’s just moved here, or you’ve lived here all your life, you’ll enjoy this course.

Kathy Amos has taught a class on Appalachian culture for many years for Elderhostel and is the director of BULLI.
