Villnöss Valley – an Alpine Pearl in the Dolomites, a Unesco World Natural Heritage Site

Alpine Pearls is a rating for extraordinary holiday spots in the Alps. However, it is also a signpost to current-ly 29 locations that offer more than just a pleasant stay. “Low-impact mobility” are the buzzwords for anyone who wants to combine leisure-time fun with environmental awareness.

Welcome to Villnöss in the heart of the DolomitesThe ALPINE PEARLS Association – for the promotion of sustainable tourism through environmentally-friendly transport – is bringing together partner regions and com-munes right throughout the Alps. This network of “pearls” that move carefully through the Alps is being developed into a strong touristic brand that allows people to get around gently.

How Alpine Pearls were born ALPINE PEARLS is the result of two interrelatedEU projects, which were prompted by an initiative of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry, Envi-ronment and Water, and taken one step further to become a coordinated EU project. The focus of the project is the crea-tion of innovative, sustainable services for tourists, which combine tourist attractions with the advantages of getting around with environmentally friendly means of transport.

Our objective over the coming years is to create an attrac-tive and environmentally-friendly transport service made up of small, mobile elements. This concept ensures that our visitors and residents can get around conveniently within our valley, as well as in neighbouring towns. We would like to pay a special word of thanks to our regional member of gov-ernment, Dr. Thomas Widmann, who has been responsible for this project and who has given the 7 pearls of South Tyrol his full support.

The DOLOMITES – a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site

On 26 June 2009 the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organ-ization) added the Dolomites to the list of world natural heritage sites. Their “scenically monumental beauty” and “geological and geomorphological importance” were catego-rized as unique in the world. Inclusion on the world heritage list is the world’s highest form of recognition for a natural site, a sort of Nobel Prize for natural assets. The best known summits in the Dolomites, such as the Geisler Peaks (3025 m) in the Puez-Geisler nature reserve, the Drei Zinnen (2999 m) in the Drei Zinnen nature reserve, the Schlern

(2563 m) in the Schlern-Rosengarten-Latemar nature reserve, and the Marmolada (3343 m), to mention only the most important, are among the most beautiful mountains in the world. From a geological, botanical and scenic point of view, the Dolomites are unique and thus cannot be compared with any other mountain range in the world. For this reason they are among the 193 most beautiful and valuable landscapes across the globe that have been recognised by UNESCO.

DolomitiCardThe DolomitiCard is the new free discount card for the Villnöss Valley in the Dolomites. It is being made available to visitors (only for guests of members) in return for the local tax which will be introduced in South Tyrol as of 1 January 2014.

It offers a number of advantages to our visitors. Alongside discounts on various events and entry fees as well as some cable car rides, our visitors can also enjoy guided hikes, numerous bus journeys, sporting equipment and much more for free. The South Tyrol Mobilcard lets you explore South Tyrol for a whole week and use all public transport operated by the transport network. You can visit valleys and towns, for example, go on hikes that start and end in different places, or simply enjoy the countryside. The Mobilcard gives children from 6 to 14 years old a 50% discount. Children up to the age of 6 travel for free. The Mobilcard is available from all South Tyrolean trans-port network sales offi ces as well as in tourist offi ces.

The Mobilcard is personal and non-transferable. Snowshoe WalkingGuided experience hikes in Reinhold Messner’s homeland

Snowshoe walking – lots of fun, no stressIf you follow the basic rules you will not endanger yourself and will also protect the natural surroundings.

1. 2.1. Compared with other types of winter sports, the equipment is simple. “Moderns” are best suited to Alpine use: They are made from shatter-proof hard plastic, provide grip on ice too and weigh only 1.7 kg. Price from approx € 120.00. In addition you will need sticks for balance, for example ski poles with large baskets.

2. Even if the instructors claim that any hiker can walk with snowshoes, beginners should not risk walking alone, but instead should join a guided snowshoe walk. It is important to be fit.

Puez-Geisler Nature Park HouseThe Puez-Geisler Nature Park House in St Magdalena in Villnöss brings visitors closer to nature in the valley and is the perfect place to take time out. The exhibition area „Touch mountains“ focuses on the key topic - the geology of the Dolomites. The Puez-Geisler Nature Park has been designated the „Dolomites site office“ because it is home to all of the rock types, deposits and weathering that are typ-ically found in the Dolomites. The „Nature‘s treasure trove“ on the second floor contains plenty to discover: animal fur, bird‘s eggs, feathers, footprints, droppings, teeth, antlers, medicinal herbs...all of which - and much more - is on display and can be touched! The „Conquering Mountains“ room is primarily dedicated to alpinism. The world‘s probably most famous alpinist, Reinhold Messner, comes from Villnöss. He explains about his expe-riences in the mountains in a short film. The „Puez-Geisler Nature Park film“ is also shown daily in the mountain cinema.

At the beginning of the 19th century, a lack of understanding, superstition and folk medicine almost led to the extinction of the Alpine ibex. It is only thanks to the successful reintroduction programmes that this fascinating, excellent climber is again common in large areas of the Alps.

This impressive exhibition shows how this happened and what strategies the ibex uses to survive in its inhospitable habitat using fabulous photographs and true-to-life exhibits.

Jahrhundert unterstanden viele Wälder den Tiroler Landesfürsten. In diesen Wäldern wurden „Herrnsteige“ angelegt.

Der Naturpark Puez-Geisler wurde im Jahre 1978 als dritter Naturpark Südtirols errichtet und ist 10.200 hagroß. Er umfasst Teilgebiete der ladinischen Gemeinden St. Martin in Thurn, Abtei und Corvara im Gader-tal, der Gemeinden St. Christina und Wolkenstein in Gröden sowie der Gemeinde Villnöß. Die Naturparks

in Südtirol sollen folgende Ziele er-füllen: Naturschutz und Landschafts-pfl ege, wissenschaftliche Forschung, Information, Umwelterziehung und Erholung. Der Tourismusverein Villnöß organisiert in Zusammen-arbeit mit dem Amt für Naturparks wöchentlich geführte Wanderungen zu verschiedenen Themen:
