As I watched the tele-vised devastationcaused by HurricaneKatrina and saw thou-
sands of people mov-ing into shelters inchurches and stadi-ums, I felt compelledto do my small part inassisting those inneed.
Combining myexpertise in jobs with
their philanthropic interests, my lifelong family friends, Sandyand Paul Steinberg, generously offered to give me money totravel to Houston to help people who relocated from NewOrleans to find jobs.
On Labor Day I walked into the Astrodome with a handmadesign that read, Are you looking for a job? I was soon sur-
rounded by women and men who shared their stories of strug-gle. They had lost everything: their homes, possessions, jobs,and in some cases, contact with family and friends. These werecashiers, housekeepers, laborers, drivers, prep cooks, dishwash-ers, and janitors, all of whom were eager to get back to work.
Their stories were similar, but one young woman moved mewith her innocence and fear. Doris Banks, a 20-year-old singlemother of a four-year-old boy, had an angelic face and sweetdisposition.
She had been working at Taco Bell in New Orleans when thestorm struck. She left her home, as it was overcome by flood-waters, and moved into the Convention Center, where shethought shed reside for a night or two. Without food or water,she watched a baby die from dehydration and an elderly manperish from heat stroke. Days later, to escape the horrendous
conditions, she boarded a bus to Houston with nothing but theclothes on her back.
I called Taco Bell and learned that Doris was eligible for imme-diate rehire in Houston. She even got a raise. Doris later toldme, I didnt think my job could be transferred out here. I justthought I was going to lay hopeless.
Knowing that a job and housing would go hand in hand, Ihelped her secure government vouchers for housing assistance.Then I cross-referenced dozens of Taco Bell locations with hun-dreds of apartment vacancies and found a perfect match just
three blocks from each other, which was essential since doesnt drive.
When we arrived to check out the place, Doris immedia
knew she wanted it. When I saw the building, it lookeent from what I was used to being around. I had never scleaner place. Theres no violence. I dont have to duck this one and that one to avoid getting shot, said Doris, lived in a dangerous housing project her entire life. It jubrightened my whole day.
I convinced the landlord to move at lightning speed. Wthree hours of my first call, Doris signed the lease and hkeys in hand. From there we did the natural thing for twhappy girls: we hit the stores to furnish the place.
We filled many, many shopping carts with food, clothingletries, kitchen appliances, bedding and a TV. I orderedand furniture to be delivered. We picked out a cell phonDoris made her first-ever visit to Starbucks. (Mocha frapno has a new fan!)
When Oprah spoke to the Astrodome evacuees, she toldtheyd come out stronger and better for having survivedstorm. I didnt think that was even remotely possible asamong the crying babies, crowded cots and sad scene. Bhaving met Doris and cutting through the bureaucracy tolish the foundation for her new beginning, Im a big bel
Just two and a half days of my time, plus $4,000 of theSteinbergsmoney, Doris was well on her way to rebuildlife full of promise. She is still shocked by what she caloverwhelming blessing, and I remain in awe of my nefriends ability to rebound with great determination.
In the coming months, I will assist Doris with computerand college courses to put her on a path to pursue the caher dreams: to work in the medical field, where she will

Nancy Lubin exemplifies how vision andtalent can be used to transform the livesof others. In 1996, she founded Dressfor Success, using $5,000 that was left toher by her great-grandfather, PoppyMax, who had come to the United Statesfrom Eastern Europe to forge a new life.
Armed with her experience as a law stu-dent, Lubin established the organizationto help low-income women take chargeof their lives. After receiving callsfrom around the country asking how theendeavors of Dress for Success could beimplemented in other locations, the namewas trademarked and licensed to affili-ates. Within two years, about 20 pro-grams were up and running, and Dressfor Success Worldwide was born.
The goal is to advance the ability ofwomen to become self-supporting by
entering the workforce and enablingthem to achieve their goals. Specifically,each woman who goes through the pro-gram is supplied with a suit for employ-ment interviews, and then a second suitwhen she lands a job. Whether you were a jock in high school or the girl who felt awkward in gym class,there are numerous ways to tap your inner Venus, Serena or Mia to connect with col-leagues through sports. You can score big both personally and professionally by get-ting in the game. Improved physical fitness, enhanced self-confidence and strongerrelationships can all be achieved through participation in womens sports teams,which typically meet in the evenings and on weekends to accommodate any busyworking girls schedule.
Since tennis icon Billie Jean King founded the Womens Sports Foundation(www.womenssportsfoundation.org) in 1974, the organization has encouraged thatlessons learned from the playing field be leveraged in the workplace. Foundation CEODonna Lopiano says, By participating in sports and physical activity, women aredeveloping skills that become effective in both the personal and professional arena.Being active in any environment and at any level improves confidence, competitiveexperiences, work ethic and social abilities that are beneficial for overall well-being.
Women For Hire Marketing Director Lara Hall, who was introduced to soccer at agesix by her dad, now plays in a competitive womens league. What Ive learnedthrough sports has helped me in my career. The other women are fiercely competi-tive, but they are also extremely supportive. They will take you aside and tell youwhat you could be doing better.
Halls teammate, Mary Lawton, a PR executive at fashion house Etro, says, Being ona team forces you to work with people on a completely different level. You have tofunction with them regardless of personal feelings. To mix things up, Lawton plays
soccer in the summer and basketball in the winter months.
Find a league by asking friends for referrals. If youre new to an area, a basic Googlesearch will likely produce results in a range of sports in your area (think tennis, swim-ming, volleyball, golf and much more) with teams catering to all levelsfrom noviceto pro. You dont even have to worry about climate since theres something for allseasons.
One of the best things about playing on a soccer team is the escape it provides fromall the stressors in my life, Hall says. Once Im on the field, all I think about is theball and winning. shirts by word-of-mouth at book-clubmeetings, trunk shows and even a t-ballgame.
After lugging our shirts everywhere Iwent, I started to feel like Willy Loman,laughs Nappi.
Schneidman adds, We sold nearly 150shirts in two months, enough to fund thenext phase of our marketing effort.

When Catherine de Medici persuaded asixteenth-century cobbler in Florence todesign a wedding shoe that wouldincrease her stature and wow the FrenchRoyal Court, the high heel was born.
Footwear has always been central towomens lives. Just consider Carrie
Bradshaw, Imelda Marcos, or Paylessqueen Star Jones. But too often it hasbeen a struggle between the desire tolook beautiful and the need to function.
Dr. Taryn Rose changed that when sheleveraged her career as an orthopedicsurgeon to footwear designer after see-ing the problems suffered by her patientsin their pretty but painful shoes. Shefelt passionate that the industry needed astylist who would focus on comfort and
health, and knew she could make thedifference. Rose conducted preliminaryresearch for several years, and after anintensive six-month period of soulsearching, decided to take the plunge.
She says, I feared regret more thanfailure.
Rose adopted the motto style plus easeand set about merging smashing goodlooks with sensible support and struc-ture. She got production up and runningthrough networking. The designs areproduced in Italy, where exquisite mate-rials are combined with detailed hand-made craftsmanship. If you are smartand organized, you can go out and doit, Rose says.
The business took off. Her first mer-chandise delivery was in 1998, withNordstrom as her first account. By
2004, the business was doing $20 mil-lion in sales.
Soon there were boutique stores in NewYork and Beverly Hills, where celebri-ties Melanie Griffith and Brooke Shieldsare regulars. An extensive collection fea-tures a wide range of styles. The dilem-ma for fans is often choosing betweenthe ballet slippers in satin or leather, theclogs with rhinestone trimmings, or thesharp-looking boots.
Rose says women are so involved withhow they dress their feet, since Shoesgive a message about who you are. Bytaking off one pair and putting on anoth-er, you can change your persona on adaily basis.

SARA MOULTONS POTATO PANCAKES
Serves 4This recipe really takes no time at all if you have a foprocessor with a gratin disk.
2 medium baking potatoes (about 1 pound)3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
Peel potatoes, quarter lengthwise and grate on the gradisk attachment of a food processor. Add half the oil inch nonstick pan and heat over moderately high heahot. Distribute the grated potato in the pan to the edgeven layer, and press down with a metal spatula to folarge potato pancake. Cook over moderate heat until brown on the bottom side, about 7 minutes. Flip the over (sliding it onto a pot lid and then inverting it bathe pan), lift up the pancake and pour the remaining underneath it. Season the top golden side with salt anthe pancake until golden brown on the second side, aminutes more. Cut into wedges and serve.

The issue of blogging and free speech might have opened a Pandoras box witing references to the First Amendment and discrimination suits, but dont coun
that to save the day. When you reveal proprietary company information or yoembarrassing your employer, your dismissal probably wouldnt be based on prclasses such as race or gender.

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld once said that at a
funeral most people would rather be in the
casket than giving the eulogy. Fear of public
speakingalso known as glossophobia
cripples millions of well-intended individuals
every year. The psychological feelings and
physical symptoms are all too familiar:
sweaty palms, jittery hands, dry mouth, but-
terflies, and nausea paired with the intense
desire to run, kicking and screaming, out ofthe room.
If youve ever experienced these or other fears, youre notalone. And the good news is you can actually do somethingconstructive about it. The not-so-hot news is that the only wayto tame this savage beast is TO DO IT! Not just once and cer-tainly more than twice.
Harriet Lerner, author ofFear and Other Uninvited Guests,says, If youre not phobic but merely terrified, avoidance alsomakes the problem worse. You need some experience with the
very activity you dread. If you jump right in, you may that the fearful imaginings cooked up by your overactivnever come to pass.
The key to managing your fears of public speaking is toyourself permission to try again and again, to find comfin the fact that you will no doubt fumble from time to tibut you will indeed survive. Whether in a conference wcolleagues or your best friends wedding among family,simple steps will jumpstart your efforts to deliver a speewith ease.
Know your material: You can lessen the tension by doiresearch and getting comfortable with the material. Mople tend to skip thorough beforehand preparation becauare overwhelmed with the task. Weve all avoided dointhing that we dread. Instead of turning on the TVor runthe fridge, dedicate yourself to one solid hour of preparaeach night before the big day. Not just one night; multipnights. Practice your speech from start to finish until ypresent it with a sense of calm. Granted, when you mothe comforts and privacy of your own home to an audieeyeballs staring ahead, you may still experience some abut it wont be due to lack of knowledge of the materialfeel more confident about your abilities when you reallyyour stuff.
Watch yourself, literally: While rehearsing your materiamay also find it helpful to cozy up to the mirror. You cthis technique to improve two areas of your presentatioyou want to be sure that you are making plenty of eye cwhich can make or break your presentation. You want t
nect with your audience versus keeping your head downreading your material. Watching yourself in the mirror assist you in weeding out any unwanted or distracting misms like swaying or flipping your hair. Distracting behlike jingling change in your pocket or chewing gum wilsabotage your message and steal the audiences attentioTaping yourself with an inexpensive tape recorder or vicamera while rehearsing can also reap huge benefits. Wdelivering their first couple of speeches, beginners tend speak too fast or they read with a monotone delivery. Lhow to pace yourself while speaking will come with moexposure and experience.

The theory is that, on the day ofthe test, you will most likely performbetter and remember more becauseyouve mastered the material in a famil-iar placenot because youve etched theanswers on your desk top! The sameprinciple applies to public speaking.Before your presentation, try to gainaccess to the room that you will beusing. Take some time before the audi-encewhether its three co-workers or300 strangersarrives to get familiarwith the space. Take your position at thefront of the room and see how that feels.Practice walking from where you will beseated to the podium. Speak into themicrophone if you are using one soyoure comfortable with its positioning,as well as the sound level. And, heck, iftime permits, deliver your speech to theempty room. Becoming familiar withthe surroundings in which youre going
to speak will be another plus on yourside when the big day arrives.
Go easy on yourself: This is perhaps themost important tip of all. Regardless ofhow your speech turns out, give yourselfa pat on the back for showing up andfollowing through. If, after your firstattempt, you sit down and berate your-self with everything you did wrong,you will create even more resistance forthe next time. Remember, your goal is
not to be flawless or perfect; its to learnhow to manage the anxiety that pops upat the mere thought of speaking or pre-senting to a group. Obviously you wantto impress your audience as well, and ifyou know your material and are genuinein your delivery, they will tend to be for-giving if youre somewhat nervous atfirst. In fact, the majority of the peopleyoure presenting to want you to succeed.

Afterwatching her fall hundreds of times,youd never think to tell her to give up.Instead, youd wait with joyful anticipa-tion for her to take that first successfulstep, and then the next one, until finallyshe is off and running. You must extendthe same kind of support and positiveanticipation to yourself.
If you are serious about conquering yourfears or improving your public speakingskills, seek opportunities to practice insupportive and nurturing environments.Volunteer to run a meeting at work, foran organization you belong to, or at yourchilds school. When you attend such
meetings, no matter how casual or for-mal, always speak up during question-and-answer periods. Even as an audi-ence member, not the featured speaker,you can benefit and improve from stand-ing up and voicing your question, con-cern or compliment.
The Toastmasters organization providesa more formal setting for strengtheningyour speaking skills through practice andfeedback from peers. Meetings, which
take place in cities throughout the coun-try, welcome any and all levels of expe-rience. The Toastmasters organizationprovides valuable guidance in everyaspect of public speakingfrom how toorganize material, use visual aids, andpractice vocal variety to more advancedprojects such as inspiring or persuadingyour audience. Many Americans over 40 in search of jobs
are often encountering something they
werent looking for: a gray ceiling. Its the
career-advancement barrier that many older
workers face in a workplace seemingly domi-
nated by young people.
Despite laws prohibiting it, polls show that more than 70 per-cent of executives believe age discrimination in the workplacehas increased during the past five years. These are Women ForHires tips on how to make age an asset, not an obstacle, inyour search.
Dont use age as a crutch. Often job seekers will say theyre notgetting hired because of their age. Theyre convinced that age istheir only barrier. And in a sense, theyre not trying as hard asthey should, or could, because even before they apply for thejob or go for the interview, theyve already resigned to not get-ting the offer because of their age. With age sometimes comescynicism, but dont let it take over the process. You cant con-trol your age, so focus on the things you can controllike howwell youre selling yourself for the specific opportunity andhow passionate you are about the position youre pursuing.
Anticipate the stereotype and be prepared to counter it. Whethertrue or not, theres often a perception that older workers aren'tcomfortable with the latest technology. Its not enough to beable to send e-mail and shop on eBay. If you arent familiarwith Excel and PowerPoint and you know your technical skillsarent up to par, take a course to master the technology.
Older workers also get a bad rap about their unwillingness orinability to adapt to change, as if theyre stuck in their ways.Make it clear in your cover letter and all interviews that you'rewilling and able to adapt and that you look forward to followingthe companys protocols.
In some cases, older candidates are seen as know it alls,because theyve been there and done that. Dont carry a chip onyour shoulder and refrain from acting as though you knew best.Confidence is key, but cockiness can work against you.
Dont focus on age, focus on experience. Older people ohear that theyre overqualified and the interviewer is qpoint out that they wont be happy in the job and will gequickly. Make sure you have a response ready for this: thought about that very issue before I applied for this poand I realized, because Im committed to this industry oparticular line of business, that my experience would betremendous asset. Im also interested in mentoring otherviduals and pitching in wherever my skills and strengthbe helpful.
If youre 50 years old and graduated from college in theyou shouldnt list every position youve held since then rsum. Focus on the most relevant experience of the la20 yearssummarizing successes, not necessarily listin
