Mountain ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to climate change
Continental region: increase in/of
heat extremes, risk of river floods
risk of forest fires, energy demand for coolingDecrease in economic value of forests and summer precipitation
Mountain regions
a shift in vegetation zones and extensive biodiversity loss , Temperature rise larger than European average, Changing precipitation patterns, including less precipitation falling as snow

Urban Heat Island (UHI) = drastic increase of urban temperature compared to their rural surroundings
REASONA
• Increased and uncontrolled industrialization
• Anthropogenic heat sources
• Decreased evapotranspiration
• High population
• Urban cityscape
• Energy consumption and lifestyle
• Enormous production of energy from sources like industry, vehicles and houses
• Built environment and concrete buildings as building materials are good insulators and can hold more heat

THE Austrian model of social housing
• Vienna has a long tradition of socially oriented housing programmes, a tradition that dates to the 1920s.
• 70,000 municipal rented flats were constructed under economically andpolitically difficult conditions for the benefit of the weakest groups of society
• “Wiener Wohnen“ administers approx. 220,000 flats and is thus the biggestlandlord in Austria - non-profit housing developers
• 10,000 flats annually rehabilitated with public funds
• 60% of all Viennese households live in subsidised housing

The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive 2010/31/EU EPBD -Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB)
The definition of NZEBs for 2020 has been published in our national plan (02/2018), which contains the minimum requirements for overall energy efficiency for for new buildings and major renovations
• Determination of the method for calculating the total energy efficiency of buildings.
• Calculation of the cost-optimal level of minimum requirements to the overall energy efficiency standards
• Documentation: energy certificates, A specific national database, the ‘Gebaude‐ und Wohnungsregister’ (GWR) (under preparation)

Sustainable buildings = choice of ecological building ecologyLow-pollutant and low-emission products
The right choice of building material is becoming increasingly important!
Since the energy input for the production of a building is about the same as the cost of heating a low-energy house during 50 years.
Avoidance fo emissions to indoor air from building materials
