The theme for World Diabetes Day 2018 and 2019 is The Family and Diabetes.
The grade 6 students at the Al Muntazir Boys Primary school became the
ambassadors for the rest of the student body as they spoke to them during the
school assembly about diabetes. They highlighted how Over 425 million people
are currently living with diabetes and most of these cases are type 2 diabetes. It
is largely preventable through regular physical activity, a healthy and balanced
diet, and the promotion of healthy living environments.
They also emphasized how families have a key role to play in addressing the
modifiable risk factors for type 2 diabetes and must be provided with the
education, resources and environments to live a healthy lifestyle.
Members from the lions club international also visited the school as part of their
campaign with the aim to raise awareness of the impact that diabetes has on the
family and support network of those affected. As well as to promote the role of
the family in the management, care, prevention and education of diabetes.
Students shared stories of people who they know are affected by the illness and
how they can do something about it.
The children were excited to join the community as it walks 5.6 kms on 18th
November 2018 geared towards raising awareness and providing medical
facilities for diabetic patients.
