Our trail connects us north to Alma, and east to Owasso for a total of 125 scenic miles encompassing Gratiot, Montcalm, Kent, Ionia, Clinton and Shiawasee counties. The trail that runs through Ionia travels along the Grand River, through the Ionia State Recreation Area, crosses Prairie Creek, and visits the Maple River for a peaceful, serene commune with nature. Wildlife sightings abound, including deer, turkey, owls, eagles and many water-fowl. Welcome to the City of Portland, the “City of Two Rivers,” is located at the confluence of the Grand and Looking Glass Rivers about midway between Lansing and Grand Rapids on I-96.Our residents enjoy a wide variety of recreational opportunities on the rivers, our many athletic fields and parks, and our growing “rails-to-trails” system. Our Riverwalk loops the entire City, connecting all of our schools and parks. Portland is truly a walkable community and draws visitors from the greater Lan-sing and Grand Rapids areas, where many of our residents work. Our residents enjoy the best of both worlds -- urban and rural. They have easy access to the economic and cultural opportunities offered by two major cities and universities. But they come home to a small, close-knit community of established neighborhoods and businesses where people care for and about their neighbors. New buildings on our east-side business corridor, the renovation of historic buildings downtown, and our new City Hall in the heart of our downtown business district show that Portland is building for the future on the solid foundation of its past.
Portland is also a full-service city that provides water, wastewater, and electric utilities. The Portland Police, Fire, and Ambulance Departments provide neces-sary emergency services in addition to community education services. The City of Portland also offers extensive parks and recreational opportunities. The City and surrounding area is served by excellent public and parochial school systems.

Saranac - Peace, Quiet and a Sense of HistoryJust inside Ionia County’s western border, within easy drives to Grand Rapids (25 miles) and Lansing (40 miles) and just West of the 4500 acre Ionia State Recreational Area, the Village of Saranac (estimated pop. 1,320) is located on the south bank of the Grand River at the mouth of Lake Creek.
Built in 1907, the Depot served the Grand Trunk and Western Railroad. June 5, 1961 was the final scheduled run of a steam locomotive into the Saranac Depot. Moved to its present location in 1994, the Depot is now home tot he Boston-Saranac Historical Society’s museum.
In addition to the Village “River Walk”, work is currently underway to connect Lowell and Ionia as part of the “Fred Meijer Midwest Michigan Trail Authority Network”.
A short walk south of the Depot, into the heart of the Village, you’ll find no shortage of places to eat. On Main Street, there’s Germaine’s, Joe’s Place - Food & Liquor, Bridge Street Pasty Shop, Gino’s Pizza and inside the Village’s coin-operated laundromat, the Corner Ice Cream Shop.
Two gas stations, several hair salons and barbershops, the Saranac Hardware, the Dollar General, Scrapbook Garden, and Ionia County Shoppers all call Saranac’s downtown home.
