JUNE 30, 2019 www.pasadenaindependent.com
W hen Pasadena was incor-porated 133 years
ago, the city was a small community of settlers, mostly from the Midwest, who had traveled far to relocate in a milder climate that would be both healthful and advan-tageous to their agricul-tural pursuits. Although this scenario sounds tame, the fledgling city was more “Wild, Wild West” than our now-sophisticated “City of Roses.”
Today’s celebra-tion takes us back to those long-ago days when the frontier was still beckoning to adventurers from afar, and takes its cue from the nostalgic look at childhood entertainments of yesteryear on display in our delightful exhibit, Giddy Up: Children Take the Reins. The popular cowboy heroes of radio, movies, and television that many of us grew up with over the decades may be gone, but their appeal is ongoing and children today are still entranced by cowboys and cowgirls, galloping horses, stagecoaches, boots and spurs and derring-do!
We are particularly excited to feature the incom-parable talent of five-time trick roping champion Christy Lewis, along with her team of western-themed performers. Watch her and be amazed - even better, you can join in the fun! Try your hand at roping a (wooden) steer and panning for gold, learn western-style dance steps and show us your moves! If song is more to your fancy, hum along with favorite cowboy tunes performed barbershop-style by the
Crown City Chorus.Don’t miss your chance
to explore and photograph the replica of a genuine Wells Fargo Concord Stagecoach. This beauty is reproduced from the original 1868 drawings by the Abbot-Downing Company of Concord, New Hampshire. Just imagine the exciting adventures passengers must have experienced 150 years
ago!Not dressed for the
occasion? We can take care of that! Hightail it over to the face painting station for some western branding and then get busy in the Crafts Corral, where Miss Helen, “the Fastest Crafter in the West,” will have you custom designing your own cowboy hat in the blink of an eye!
There’s so much to enjoy,
including more than 10 inter-active stations hosted by our Event Partners and Sponsors. Don’t miss any – in fact, if you get your Pony Express Passport stamped at all the Outposts, you’ll be eligible to win a Super Surprise Raffle Basket!
Of course a birthday party without cake is unthink-able. We can’t wait to see the enormous cake that Baja
Ranch Supermarket is creating for this year’s festivities. It’s not just a photographic showstopper, however – it’s mouth-wateringly delicious and earns compliments galore (and many requests for second helpings) each year.
It is Pasadena Museum of History’s pleasure to host this event each year and to welcome Mayor Terry Tornek, along with many other civic
dignitaries, to preside over the celebration. We are tremendously grateful to the City of Pasadena, our Event Sponsors, and Event Partners who truly make Happy Birthday Pasadena possible. They illustrate what makes Pasadena such a special place – a community of individuals and organizations working together to make our City a 21st Century powerhouse.

Dear Community Members and Friends of Pasadena,
On behalf of the City, I am delighted to welcome each of you to YAHOO! Happy Birthday Pasadena!! Today we celebrate the 133rd anniversary of our City’s incorporation on June 19, 1886. Looking back to a time when Pasadena was more frontier town than refined munici-pality makes us appreciate the great progress our citizens have made in a relatively short amount of time.
Since its earliest years, Pasadena has been a city brimming with enthusiasm, excite-ment, accomplishment, innovation, and a great sense of self-identity. As you enjoy today’s festivities centering on our cultural and historical leagacy, I hope you will take a moment to recognize all we have achieved over the years thanks to the people of Pasadena - persons of varied backgrounds and cultures who together have created this vibrant City.
Special thanks to Pasadena Museum of History for graciously hosting, planning and producing this multi-faceted community celebration, and to all the generous sponsors, event partners, and volunteers who have played crucial roles.
Happy Birthday, Pasadena. We honor your past and look forward to an even brighter future!
TERRY TORNEKMayor
Sincerely,

New Frontiers at Happy Birthday Pasadena 2019
Like the pioneers of old who settled the western frontier, we are blazing new paths
at Yahoo!! Happy Birthday Pasadena! This year, our Program Sponsor, Pasadena Independent, has created an innovative means of sharing information about all the goings-on at our event, both before and during the festivi-ties.
Utilizing technologies that weren’t available to the area’s early innovators, today we are able to reach more individuals and provide fuller details in advance of the party than ever before. Having the Electronic Event Program available on Pasadena Independent’s website allows everyone with internet access to view it and make plans ahead of time. By linking the program informa-tion to emails and newslet-ters, texts, and social media posts, everyone can easily
share the program far and wide. Outreach has never been so easy!
At the event, be sure to look for the placards with QR codes placed throughout the grounds at strategic loca-tions. Simply view the code in your iPhone’s/smartphone’s camera mode to go directly to the Electronic Schedule so that you can check times and locations for the various entertainments and activities and be sure to catch them all.
Congratulations! You, too, are a Pasadena Pioneer!

Giddy Up: Children Take The reins
PMH invites visitors to bask in the joyful ambiance of quintessential childhood amuse-ments in a uniquely “touchable” exhibition, Giddy Up: Children Take the Reins. Curated by local collector and conservator Lourinda Bray, the exhibition is on view through September 15, 2019.
The PMH galleries are filled with a dizzying array of more than thirty-five smaller scaled carousel horses and exotic creatures that visitors of all ages will be able to see – and touch. An enchanting photo booth features a double-seat Polar Bear from an English carousel by J.R. Anderson, circa 1920, that children and adults can climb on for a special keepsake photo.
A selection of ride-on horses/animals that rock, bounce, and/or roll, along with a wide variety of animals and carousel themed toys, are also on view. Today we might call these the ‘interactive’
toys and amusements of yesteryear. They were specifically designed to spark children’s imagina-tions, encouraging youngsters to “take the reins and create their own unique stories and fictional characters as they pretended to be their favorite cowboy film stars or other fictional characters.
Giddy Up is the Museum’s second exhibi-tion devoted solely to items from Lourinda Bray’s collection. Her Running Horse Studio in Irwindale, CA houses her nearly unimaginable menagerie, along with carousel art, miniatures, toys, and more in 7,000 square feet of merry-go-round memorabilia. Here she carefully restores figures for other collectors and for operational carousels, as well as pieces in her own collec-tion, which spans the history of carousels from the mid-nineteenth century to modern day, with many examples from the “Golden Age of Carou-sels,” 1861-1920.
Explore the world of carousel animals & childhood toys that rock, bounce, & rollThis “touchable’” exhibition is on view through September 15, 2019
