THE SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL WELLBEING OF YOUNG PEOPLE
Since 2003, 137,408 students enrolled in 701 Australian primary and secondary schools have completed Professor Michael Bernard’s Survey of Social-Emotional Well Being published by the Australian Council for
Educational Research. Research findings have now been published: Bernard, M.E., & A. Stephanou, (2017).Ecological levels of social and emotional wellbeing of young people. Child Indicators Research.
DOI 10.1007/s12187-017-9466-7.
Research reveals that a young person’s level of SEWB is determined by quality of parenting, engagement at school, community connectedness as well as character (values, strengths), attitudes and social-emotional skills.
Five different levels of SEWB of Australian youth have been discovered.Approximate percentage of young people at each level of SEWB in the general population.
YCDI! Education programs are based on international research AND studies byProfessor Michael Bernard and his colleagues into the social-emotional development of children and
adolescents. Evaluation studies continue to show highly beneficial effects of YCDI! programs on the attitudesand social-emotional skills of young people leading to improved achievement, relationships and wellbeing.

Why it pays to teach social and emotional skills to our kids
What are social emotional skills?
Emotional skills are all about learning how to
manage and express our feelings appropriately.
Social skills are about relating to other people.
Social and emotional skills are critical to building
and maintaining self-esteem and confidence.
Social emotional learning (SEL) underpins positive
mental health, which is as important as physical
health for kids when it comes to coping in the
classroom and the school yard. Kids with good
social and emotional skills are better placed to
resist peer pressure and bullying.
The Collaborative for Academic, Social and
Emotional Learning (CASEL) identifies social
emotional learning as falling into five broad
headings: self-awareness, self-management,
social awareness and relationship skills.
Self-awareness:
• identify and recognise emotions
• recognising personal interests and strengths
• maintain a sense of self-confidence
Self-management:
• control emotions to handle stress
• control impulses
• motivation to persevere
• work towards achieving personal and
academic goals
• express emotions appropriately
Social awareness:
• empathise
• recognise another ‘s perspective
• appreciate similarities and differences
Relationship skills:
• cooperate
• resist inappropriate social pressure
• resolve interpersonal conflict
• seek help when needed
Responsible decision-making:
• make constructive and respectful choices
• consider all factors – ethical, safety, social
• realistically evaluate alternatives and
consequences
As parents, we really want our kids to get the
most out of learning and life in general. Learning
can be so much fun, especially when kids are
encouraged and challenged, both at home and at
school. But even the brightest kids can fall behind
in their learning if they can’t get along with others,
manage their time, make decisions or work as a
team. Academic achievement is all well and good,
but if our kids can’t relate or haven’t learnt how to
manage and express their feelings, learning can
become anything but fun…

The Parenting Style that Builds Greatest Resilience in Kids
ParentingWorksResearch-based parenting articles
Kids are often better than adults at bouncing back and some kids seem to be born with a temperament that provides them with a talent for resilience and an ability to quickly move on from set-backs.
However, according to a group of researchers, one of the factors that contributes to the degree of resilience in kids is not the temperament they are born with but rather, their parents’ style of parenting. In a recent study, researchers
investigated the relationship between parenting styles and resilience including which style seems to build resilience.
Researchers looked at three styles of parenting including:
1. ‘Acceptance-involvement’ (warm, firm, involved and sensitive to kids’ changing needs)2. ‘Psychological autonomy-granting’ (democratic
discipline and not pushing kids to comply with rules)
3. ‘Behavioural strictness-supervision’ (shaping, controlling and evaluating the behaviour and attitudes of the child in accordance with set standards of conduct that are usually absolute)
The main question of the study was to ascertain which parenting style can predict resilience. The effect of the gender of children in this relationship was also examined.
KEY FINDINGS
The strongest relationship was between the ‘acceptance-involvement’ (warmth, support and child-centred) parenting style and children’s resilience, and as such, could be regarded as a protective factor that may increase a child’s ability to overcome negative life events and crises.© The Bernard Group 2018

ATTITUDES AND BEHAVIOURS FOR LEARNING (AB4L)
This workshop designed for primary and lower secondary-level classroom teachers focuses on the integration of personal, social and learning attitudes and skills during the teaching of literacy and numeracy.
Workshop Content
• Social and emotional learning skills that contribute to student engagement and achievement.
• How to integrate five SEL teaching practices for strengthening the positive attitudes and behaviours of students across a literacy lesson.
Goals of the AB4L Professional Development Program
• To increase knowledge of the role students’ attitudes and social-emotional skills play in their engagement and learning.
• To learn about a group of attitudes and behaviours for learning that research indicates as having a significant influence on student engagement in their development and learning of literacy, numeracy and other academic skills.
• To learn how to integrate the AB4L program in the teaching of literacy, numeracy and other essential learning areas to increase student engagement and achievement.
Published research indicates that the AB4L teaching program strengthens students’ attitudes and social-emotional skills needed for engagement, cooperative learning, independent classwork and homework and leads to an improvement in reading comprehension of students in the lower 50% of achievement.
AB4L Practices that Teachers Develop Further

have them set their own learning goals.• Identify behaviours for learning.• Discuss positive and negative self-talk for learning.• Communicate behaviour-specific feedback for learning.
AB4L Enables a Student to

class period.• Apply behaviours for learning throughout lessons
and during homework, (e.g., staying calm when they don’t understand what the teacher is explaining, raising their hand to answer a difficult question; staying on task and not being distracted by others when working independently).
• Employ positive rather than negative self-talk when faced with schoolwork that is hard or when making mistakes.
