YOUR CONSERVATION IMPACTOver the past year, your support has generated
amazing conservation accomplishments. We have
you to thank for a record attendance of over 1.45
million people engaging with our animals, hearing
conservation messages and being inspired to
protect wildlife.
Your support allowed Calgarians to experience and
care for a part of the world few people get to see
with the arrival of penguins. You ensured the best
possible care for our animals and you created
opportunities for visitors to learn about and engage
with the natural world. Beyond the zoo’s gates,
you enabled innovative, local and international
conservation research and community-based
projects that help people and animals around
the globe.
Much has changed over the zoo’s eight decades on
St. George’s Island, but one constant has been
Calgarians’ incredible support for their zoo. Many of
you, individuals, small businesses and corporations,
have had a hand in helping the zoo evolve into what
it is today – together, we are a leader in education
and conservation, inspiring our community to connect
with nature to ultimately, take action to support it.
We thank you for your past, present and
future support.

WIThOUT A dOUbTA gIfT fOR ThE zOO’S ANIMAl hEAlTh CENTREDianne Hall admits she had doubts when she
learned her mother, Eunice Krausert, had left a
legacy gift to the zoo in her will. “Initially I was
disappointed,” she explains. “I wasn’t a fan of zoos
and didn’t enjoy seeing animals in captivity, but as
I got involved with the Calgary Zoo, learned about
the care they provide and saw the relationships
zookeepers have with the animals, my opinion
completely changed. Now I think, without a doubt,
it was the right path to take.”
Working closely with the zoo, Dianne directed her
mother’s gift to the Animal Health Centre. “I think
my mom would be happy that her legacy gift will
contribute to a part of the zoo that benefits each
and every animal – it’s really a perfect fit,” says
Dianne. The generous gift will renovate the Animal
Health Centre so the zoo can continue to provide
the very best animal care, ensure the highest welfare
standards for the zoo’s animals and contribute to
conservation and veterinary programs.
“We are a family of animal lovers and we’re happy that my mother’s gift will give the zoo additional support to provide the best care for all the animals.”

IN ThE COMPANY Of VISIONARIESCORPORATE lEAdERShIP SUPPORTS CONSERVATION INNOVATIONStepping in to help species at risk takes leadership. Since its initial contribution that helped
launch the zoo’s Centre for Conservation Research (CCR) in 2003, Husky Energy
has shown itself to be a true leader in environmental sustainability. With the support of
Husky Energy and other dedicated partners, the Husky Energy Endangered Species
Program is creating a brighter future for endangered species including burrowing owls,
swift foxes, black-footed ferrets, whooping cranes and Vancouver Island marmots.
“By supporting conservation research, we can
deepen our connection with science while
advancing conservation in western Canada,”
says Husky CEO Asim Ghosh. “This flagship program
is true conservation in action.”
The CCR works with other non-profit organizations,
governments, scientists and universities around the
world to conduct and share research focusing on
endangered species. Your support enables scientific
research aimed at increasing the population of
endangered species to sustainable levels and
successfully reintroducing animals back into the wild.

TAIlS Of SUPPORTTUSkS & TAIlS gAlA fUNdRAISER TO SUPPORT PENgUINSLast June, Calgary’s philanthropic community
gathered for the zoo’s 2012 Tusks & Tails Gala, which
focused on the zoo’s newest exhibit – Penguin Plunge.
All proceeds from the event were dedicated toward
ongoing Penguin Plunge operations, animal care
costs and penguin conservation efforts in the wild.
Sherri Balm, who has helped organize Tusks & Tails for
six years and is currently co-chair, says the event is a
chance to showcase the zoo at its finest. “It’s
wonderful to be able to share the zoo with our guests
and an important opportunity to educate them
about the conservation work that goes on behind
the scenes. It’s a chance to fundraise, but also to
friend-raise; to teach people what the zoo does, so
they will share our story with others.”
“Tusks & Tails is a chance to showcase the zoo at its finest and spread the word about the zoo’s conservation work.”

gENERATIONS Of gIVINgSUPPORTINg ThE zOO IS A fAMIlY MATTERBack in 1956, when Dorothy Harvie approached the
zoo with the idea of creating a Children’s Zoo, she
likely didn’t realize it would be the beginning of a
relationship that would span five decades and
three generations.
The Harvies’ support of the zoo is so integral that it’s
difficult to think of a part of the organization that
hasn’t been touched by the family’s generosity.
From building the original Large Mammal House
and Conservatory to bringing the first giraffes and
white rhinos in the 1960s and creating what would
eventually become the Dorothy Harvie Gardens, Eric
and Dorothy Harvie gave Calgarians the opportunity
to experience and appreciate nature from parts of
the world most would never have the chance to visit.
Robin Harvie thinks her mother- and father-in-law’s
support of the zoo may have been inspired by their
travels around the world. “They both loved animals,
and Mrs. Harvie, in particular, adored plants. I’m sure
that she enjoyed sharing things which she thought
were lovely with other Calgarians.”
The family’s gifts throughout the generations also
helped the zoo to extend its reach into education
and conservation. The zoo’s endangered species
breeding facility, the Devonian Wildlife Conservation
Centre, and the initial concept of Zoo School were
both the result of contributions from the Harvies.

“Giving to their community was an important part of
their way of life, and I think Mr. and Mrs. Harvie would
both be very proud of how the family’s connection
with the zoo has evolved and grown to include their
children and grandchildren,” says Robin.
Today, we can thank the Harvies for the dazzling
display of butterflies inside the ENMAX Conservatory
and for the rich experience we all enjoy while at the
zoo. Without their gifts, it is certain the zoo would not
be where it is today.
“Mrs. Harvie, in particular, adored plants. I’m sure that she enjoyed sharing things which she thought were lovely with other Calgarians.”

CONOCOPhIllIPS CANAdA bRINgS PENgUIN bIOfACTS TO ThE zOO “Look, but don’t touch.” are
words kids often hear, but the
Calgary Zoo’s biofact collection
takes a different approach. From
feathers and fossils to shells and
skeletons, kids can let their
curiosity guide them in a hands-
on experience. And with a
collection of over 2,300 real and
replica items, there is an endless
possibility of teaching tools in the
biofact collection to help inspire a
lifelong love of nature.
When zoo visitors plunged into the
world of penguins in 2012, a
contribution from ConocoPhillips
Canada added all kinds of
fascinating penguin artifacts to
illustrate the adaptations of these
feathered wonders. “People flock
to the penguin biofacts,” says
Barb Simic, director of community
investment and volunteerism with
ConocoPhillips Canada, sponsors
of the zoo’s biofact collection and
the ConocoPhillips Canada
classroom. “I’ve watched kids at
Penguin Plunge in awe of the
penguin eggs, skulls and feathers.
They ask questions, learn something
new and walk away excited.”
Capitalizing on that excitement is
what education programs at the
zoo are all about – and something
Simic says ConocoPhillips Canada
supports wholeheartedly. “If we
teach children about the
creatures that are part of our
world and their habitats early
enough, we can create future
scientists and environmentalists –
people who have a conscience
and can make good decisions
because they know their actions
impact animals and the
environment,” adds Simic.

It’s a natural link with
ConocoPhillips Canada’s support
of education, the environment
and safety, but Simic adds that
the company’s contribution is
about much more than writing a
cheque. “Our staff are very
involved in our contributions to the
zoo – whether it’s helping set up
for Zoolights or supporting Tusks &
Tails. It’s part of the reason why
the zoo is a perfect fit for us.”

ThE fUTURE gIVES bACkENTREPRENEURIAl ElEMENTARY STUdENTAt only nine years old, Will McHardy is a lot of things – an elementary school student,
an animal lover, an entrepreneur and a philanthropist. No stranger to the zoo (he visited
almost every week from birth to age six), he wanted to make a difference to what he
says is his favourite place in the world.
And he knew exactly how he was going to do it.
From clay monkey bookmarks to Christmas ornaments, Will
made things he thought he could sell to raise money to support
the animals at the zoo. It worked. After selling his wares to
his family and neighbours and even at his school Christmas
concert, he raised more than $550, which he excitedly
delivered to the zoo’s fund development team.
Will’s advice to other kids? “Giving the money to the zoo really
made me feel good. Don’t be shy to make and sell what is in
your mind. You can do it.”
“My favourite animal? I love them all, but if I had to choose one it would be the penguins.”

as he recalls a photo celebrating what may have
been the company’s first contribution to the zoo
when the Prehistoric Park opened in the early 1980s.
RGO’s latest contribution will provide much-needed
upgrades to the zoo’s office furniture and equipment,
along with new visitor furniture in Kitamba Café. Glen
says this contribution is simply an extension of what
RGO has already been doing. “Like almost every
organization, the zoo needs to continually upgrade
to be successful. This is something we’re happy to be
able to help them with.”
“We are a Calgary-based company and we’ve done
very well over our 47 years in business. It’s only right to
give back to our community,” says Glen. “We’re
constantly growing and like to see the charitable
organizations in our city be able to do the same. This
has been our busiest year ever and we’re happy to
be able to share our success.”
He adds that when charitable organizations, like the
Calgary Zoo, need financial support or products to
succeed, RGO is eager to help. “We contribute
where we can to help our community organizations
succeed. Places like the zoo help make Calgary one
of the best cities in the world to live.”
