Before your library research…
State your topic as a question
Do some background reading on your topic
Identify the main concepts or keywords in your question
Boolean Operators: ANDUse the Boolean Operator “and” to
combine your keywords
Example: if you type discipline and elementary
You will find items containing both words

Boolean Operators: ORUse the Boolean Operator “or” to
broaden your search results
Example: if you type elementary or preschool
You will find items with either one of the search words or both words together

You will find items with only the word elementary and your search will exclude any results with

Popular Magazines will publish articlesto sell magazines and for a general audienceScholarly Journals will publish articles to communicate new research and are written for a specific audience Trade Magazines will publish articles with information to provide professional support
Popular Magazines
□Written by reporters, journalists who are employed by the magazines
□The purpose of articles is to sell the magazines
□Articles are not always signed and do not have references
□Usually eye catching with lots of pictures □Will contain many advertisements
Trade/Professional Magazines
□Written by members of the profession□Usually published by an association □Purpose is to provide professional support□Will include advertisements related to
education□Articles are written for teachers and will
focus on current trends and news in education, employment issues etc
Scholarly Journals
□Articles are written by scholars, researchers, experts in a field
□The purpose of these journals is to communicate new research and new scholarly ideas
□Articles are signed by the author and they are required to list their sources
□The most prestigious journals will subject their articles to a “peer-review” process
Peer Reviewed/Refereed?Check the first few pages of a print journal to find a list of reviewers, an editorial board and policy
If you are using the online version of a journal check the bibliographic or introductory page for that journal
Search for a publisher page on the Web
If unsure ask your professor or a library staff member
Searching for Magazine/Journal Articles
□ You have access to thousands of electronic journals, magazines and newspapers through the Library’s website and print journal collection
□ To find articles on a topic in education use a journal index
□ Click on the “Article Databases in Education” link on the Education Library website to access these indexes
Searching the WebYou can start at the Education Library website, click
on Important Education Sites
Or use a search engine like “Google”
Use quotation marks to enclose phrases
Use a plus sign + to connect words together “classroom management” + “disruptive behavior”
