“Engineering is a complex and beautiful
thing. You can’t go anywhere without
witnessing something that’s a
revelation of engineering:―your phone,
the chair you’re sitting in, the building
you’re in, the car you drive, the road
you’re driving on. It’s all engineering.”
—Trinity Webb, civil engineering major; earning a construction management certificate
Member, National Society of Black Engineers— Ohio University

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS:
• Aviation
• Chemical Engineering
• Civil Engineering
• Computer Science
• Electrical Engineering
• Energy Engineering
• Engineering Technology and Management
• Industrial and Systems Engineering
• Mechanical Engineering
• Undecided Engineering
“Students can come in directly to a
department or as an undecided
engineering major. As part of that,
they participate in a learning
community and take the engineering
and technology overview course. It's
a good way to understand what
engineering can be in different fields.”
— Diana Schwerha, associate professor of industrial and systems engineering
Advisor to OHIO’s Society of Women Engineers and American Society of Safety Engineers; teaches courses in statistics, quality control, and ergonomics

Russ College students participate in competition teams, including
environmental design, Chem-E-Car, aviation flight team, robot battle,
steel bridge design, concrete canoe, asphalt mix design, and more.
Undergraduate research is available in all departments. Students
can receive support for their own projects from Russ Vision Funds,
which provide around $3,000 per award for undergraduate research,
competition teams, and conference attendance.
“There are so many things you can do in
the Russ College. There are research
opportunities, job opportunities. There
are a lot of student organizations that
have competitions, and you can get
hands-on experience from that. There’s
not just a technological side, but there’s a
developing-yourself side.”
—Natasha Norris, electrical engineering major
President of OHIO’s Society of Women Engineers; conducts research at OHIO’s Avionics Engineering Center

design
The senior design capstone course engages students in groups,
working on a project from design to build, for real clients in the local
community. Many projects have improved the workplace for disabled
employees and have won national awards with large cash prizes.
Projects have included:
• Energy-appropriate personal transportation vehicle
• Miniature self-deploying “robocat” for military missions
• Solar-powered freezer
• Water-pumping system for an African village
• Solid-state lighting for campus bike path
• Firefighting backpack
“The Russ College teaches us to do
something that we love that’s good for
other people, too. My senior design
class had actual clients we were working
for. We created a math tutoring app
geared toward helping high
school students.”
— Patricia Lindner, computer science major
Conducting research at OHIO’s Interplanetary Research Group; teaching assistant for an undergraduate computer science course

careersco-ops
In addition to internships, our cooperative education program offers
you the chance to earn a salary, course credit, and career experience by
working one or more semesters on site with an employer.
Russ College students have been co-op employees with:
• Boeing
• BF Goodrich
• DuPont
• Honda of America
• NASA
• Procter & Gamble
Many times, students receive job offers from their co-op and internship
employers before they graduate.
“The co-op program is a must-do.
The engineering curriculum has
to have certain components no matter
what school you go to. What makes a
difference are the extracurricular activities.
Co-op is one of those opportunities.”
—Gerardine Botte, Russ Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
Founder and chief technology officer of E3 Clean Technologies Inc.; holds five patents
and
integrity
The Russ College encourages students to take charge of their education
by gaining valuable leadership skills through student organizations and
leadership institutes and initiatives:
• Society of Women Engineers
• Women in Aviation International
• Theta Tau co-ed engineering fraternity
• Robe Leadership Institute
• Bobcats Building a Better World
• Engineering Ambassadors
• National Society for Black Engineers
“Becoming a leader is really important for
these bright, young female engineers. It’s
about the experience of being a leader
rather than being taught in a classroom
how to be a leader.”
—Natalie Kruse Daniels, ’04 civil engineering graduate; assistant professor of environmental studies, OHIO’s Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs
Civil engineering women’s alumni association member; researches post-industrial water pollution
