Dear Parishioners,
Last week Governor Reynolds made an adjustment to the public
health measures in the State of Iowa. She has loosen some of
those restrictions such as masks. What does that mean for our
parish life? Nothing.
The person who has ultimate authority in directing parish life is
Archbishop Jackels. Here is what he has stated about the
Governor’s most recent declaration.

“On 5 February 2021, the Governor decreed that the
State of Iowa is still in a public health disaster emergency, to
continue at least until 7 March 2021.
The same decree recognizes that the risk of COVID19
transmission is substantially reduced by taking appropriate
public health safety measures.
In fact, the Governor still strongly encourages that these
reasonable measures be taken throughout the State of Iowa, even
though there is no mandate.
Moreover, in some places, in spite of the Governor’s decree,
these public health safety measures are still mandated by City or
County ordinance.
With regard to Churchsponsored activities (Mass and meetings,
school and RE, just to name a few), the public health safety
measures will continue to be observed until the COVID19
vaccine is available to all who are able to receive it, and the
CDC announces that the pandemic is under control:
· Stay home if you are sick, frail from age or illness, or
vulnerable.
· Wash your hands.
· Wear a mask.
· Avoid physical contact as much as possible.
· Keep a safe (social) distance from people outside your
household.
· Sanitize commonlytouched surfaces.
· In church, holy water fonts should be emptied,
· At Holy Mass, singing should be kept to a minimum,
· liturgical ministers should be kept to a few,

The COVID is a very contagious and lifethreatening virus. For
the love of God and neighbor, wear a mask even if it isn’t
mandated, and get vaccinated when it becomes available to you.”

Practically speaking this does not change our practices.
One question that we had to address already is funeral dinners.
We will continue to forgo any funeral dinners in our parishes
until the Archbishop says otherwise.
This week we begin Lent. Let us offer the
inconveniences of this restrictions as an expression of penance
and offer it for the healing of the world from the virus.

God bless,

Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord
Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God,

Reading 1: Leviticus 13:12, 4446
The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “If someone has on
his skin a scab or pustule or blotch which appears to be the
sore of leprosy, he shall be brought to Aaron, the priest, or
to one of the priests among his descendants. If the man is
leprous and unclean, the priest shall declare him unclean
by reason of the sore on his head. “The one who bears the
sore of leprosy shall keep his garments rent and his head
bare, and shall muffle his beard; he shall cry out,
‘Unclean, unclean!’ As long as the sore is on him he shall
declare himself unclean, since he is in fact unclean. He
shall dwell apart, making his abode outside the camp.”

Responsorial Psalm:
R. I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me
with the joy of salvation.

Gospel: Mark 1:4045
A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and
said, “If you wish, you can make me clean.” Moved with
pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to
him, “I do will it. Be made clean.” The leprosy left him
immediately, and he was made clean. Then, warning him
sternly, he dismissed him at once. He said to him, “See
that you tell no one anything, but go, show yourself to the
priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed;
that will be proof for them.” The man went away and began
to publicize the whole matter. He spread the report abroad
so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly.
He remained outside in deserted places, and people kept
coming to him from everywhere.

Ash Wednesday
Reading 1: Joel 2:1218
Even now, says the LORD, return to me with your whole
heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning; Rend your
hearts, not your garments, and return to the LORD, your
God. For gracious and merciful is he, slow to anger, rich in
kindness, and relenting in punishment. Perhaps he will
again relent and leave behind him a blessing, Offerings and
libations for the LORD, your God. Blow the trumpet in
Zion! proclaim a fast, call an assembly; Gather the people,
notify the congregation; Assemble the elders, gather the
children and the infants at the breast; Let the bridegroom
quit his room and the bride her chamber. Between the
porch and the altar let the priests, the ministers of the
LORD, weep, And say, “Spare, O LORD, your people, and
make not your heritage a reproach, with the nations ruling
over them! Why should they say among the peoples,
‘Where is their God?’” Then the LORD was stirred to
concern for his land and took pity on his people.

Responsorial Psalm:
R. Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned

Reading 2: 2 Corinthians 5:206:2
Brothers and sisters: We are ambassadors for Christ, as if
God were appealing through us. We implore you on behalf
of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him
to be sin who did not know sin, so that we might become
the righteousness of God in him. Working together, then,
we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain.
For he says: In an acceptable time I heard you, and on the
day of salvation I helped you. Behold, now is a very
acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

Gospel: Matthew 6:16, 1618
Jesus said to his disciples: “Take care not to perform
righteous deeds in order that people may see them;
otherwise, you will have no recompense from your
heavenly Father. When you give alms, do not blow a
trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues
and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to
you, they have received their reward. But when you give
alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is
doing, so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your
Father who sees in secret will repay you. “When you pray,
do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in
the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see
them. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door,
and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees
in secret will repay you. “When you fast, do not look
gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance,
so that they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I say
to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast,
anoint your head and wash your face, so that you may not
appear to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden.
And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.”

Homily

Profession of Faith:
I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of
heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I
believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of
God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God,
Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not
made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things
were made. For us men and for our salvation he came
down from heaven [bow] and by the Holy Spirit was
incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our
sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered
death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in
accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come
again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his
kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the
Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and
the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and
glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in
one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one
Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to
the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to
come. Amen.

#1 Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee #726
1. Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love;
hearts unfold like flow’rs before thee, op’ning to the sun
above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark
of doubt away. Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with
the light of day.
2. All thy works with joy surround thee, earth and heav’n
reflect thy rays, stars and angels sing around thee, center
of unbroken praise; field and forest, vale and mountain,
flow’ry meadow, flashing sea, chanting bird and flowing
fountain, call us to rejoice in thee.

#2 There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy #670
1. There’s a wideness in God’s mercy like the wideness of
the sea; there’s a kindness in his justice which is more
than liberty. There is plentiful redemption in the blood
that has been shed; there is joy for all the members in the
sorrows of the Head.
2. For the love of God is broader than the measures of our
mind, and the heart of the Eternal is most wonderfully
kind. If our love were but more simple we should take
him at his word, and our lives would be thanksgiving for
the goodness of our Lord.

#3 Lay Your Hands #421
R. Lay your hands gently upon us. Let their touch render
your peace. Let them bring your forgiveness and healing.
Lay your hands gently, lay your hands.
1. You were sent to free the broken hearted. You were sent
to give sight to the blind. You desire to heal all our
illnesses. Lay your hands gently, lay your hands.
2. Lord, we come to you through one another. Lord, we
come to you in our need. Lord, we come to you seeking
wholeness. Lay your hands gently, lay your hands.

#4 Loving and Forgiving #413
R. Loving and forgiving are you, O Lord; slow to anger, rich
in kindness, loving and forgiving are you.
1. All my being, bless the Lord, bless the holy name of God.
All my being, bless the Lord, rememb’ring the goodness
of God.
2. God forgives us all our sings, healing those who live in
pain, saving us from final death. God fills us with
goodness and love.
3. Good and gracious is the Lord, slow to anger, rich in
love. God remembers not our sins; forgiving and loving
is God.
4. As heaven soars above the earth, so great the love of God
for us. As far as east is from the west, the Lord takes our
sins from us.

#5 Hosea #411
1. Come back to me with all your heart, don’t let fear keep
us apart. Trees do bend, though straight and tall; so must
we to others’ call.
R. Long have I waited for your coming home to me and
living deeply our new life.
2. The wilderness will lead you to your heart where I will
speak. Integrity and justice with tenderness you shall know.
3. You shall sleep secure with peace; faithfulness will be your
joy.

#6 In the Breaking of the Bread #489
R. In the breaking of the bread we have known him; we have
been fed. Jesus the stranger, Jesus the Lord, be our
companion; be our hope.
1. Bread for the journey, strength for our years, manna of
ages, of struggle and tears. Cup of salvation, fruit of the
land, bless and receive now, the work of our hands.
2. Bread of the promise, people of hope, wine of compassion,
life for the world. Gathered at table, joined as his body,
sealed in the Spirit, sent by the Word.

#7 Taste and See #511
R. Taste and see, taste and see the goodness of the Lord. O
taste and see, taste and see the goodness of the Lord, of the
Lord.
1. I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall always be
on my lips; my soul shall glory in the Lord for he has been
so good to me.
2. Glorify the Lord with me. Together let us all praise his
name. I called the Lord and he answered me from all my
troubles he set me free.
3. Worship the Lord, all you people. You’ll want for nothing
if you ask Taste and see that God is good; in him we need
put all our trust.

#7 Though the Mountains May Fall #619
R. Though the mountains may fall and the hills turn to dust,
yet the love of the Lord will stand as a shelter for all who
will call on his name. Sing the praise and the glory of God.
1. Could the Lord ever leave you? Could the Lord forget his
love? Though a mother forsake her child, he will not
abandon you.
2. Should you turn and forsake him, he will gently call your
name. Should you wander away from him, he will always
take you back.

#8 A Mighty Fortress #616
1. A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; our
helper he amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing; for still
our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; his craft and
pow’r are great, and armed with cruel hate, on earth is not
his equal.
2. Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be
losing, were not the Savior on our side, the man of God’s
own choosing: Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it
is he; Lord Sabaoth, his name, from age to age the same,
and he must win the battle.
