Medusa and Minotaur Take Tea by Rachel Piercey
The china is in smithereens
before our tea has even brewed
but it hardly matters.
Minotaur is half bull
and a little clumsy
but bigger things have been shattered,
like our reputations,
and we are here with pen and paper
to set the record straight.
We blame the poets
and the storytellers
and the kings playing at war
who wanted this head and that head,
this pesky soldier
and that far-off monster dead.
Often they didn't even leave their
thrones.
Medusa and Minotaur Take Tea by Rachel Piercey
'I didn't even like the taste
of human flesh, but it was all they sent
into the Labyrinth,' lows Minotaur.
I write this down,
and also that I didn't choose
to have a head of thrashing snakes, to turn
everyone who looks at me to stone.
The poets didn't care to judge
the malice heaped on us
by petty gods,
just how we ended up
and our ability to finish off
their 'heroes' Perseus and Theseus,
men we'd never heard of,
coming with swords and shields kill us.
Medusa and Minotaur Take Tea by Rachel Piercey
' Wouldn't you put up a fight?
But of course it was useless.
In stories, monsters always die.
I get some sturdier mugs and pour the
tea.
My hair hisses and seethes.
Minotaur asks me to write down
that we were lonely.
• What do you think?
• Had you imagined the feelings of these
monsters before?
• Has this changed your views in any way?
Sometimes we have to consider both sides in
order to write a balanced argument
Polyphemus
For Feeling Sympathy Against Feeling Sympathy
He was defending his property -Odysseus and his men went uninvited into Polyphemus’s home
He was following the natural behaviour of a Cyclops – it is like humans eating meat
Odysseus deliberately gave him drink that would make him fall asleep – this was unkind
He is now blind and cannot do his job as a shepherd– Odysseus should have found another way out
He is naïve/foolish – Odysseus easily tricked him taking advantage of this
He is cruel – he ate some of Odysseus’s men and laughed about it
He is hostile – he deliberately traps Odysseus and his men, even though they bring him a gift
He is untruthful – he promises not to eat them if they give him a present but breaks this promise
He is vengeful/cruel – he tried to sink their ship and asks Poseidon to destroy it
Read the poem again
Use a highlighter to find words and phrases which give ideas for reasons to
feel sympathy for the monsters.
Create a list of reasons, for and against feeling
sympathy for the monsters. Don't just use the
poem use inference and imagination to justify your
points.
Use your list to help you answer the following
question:
