positive pastoral experiences and interactions with the people here at St. Joseph's parish - my first parish assignment as a priest.

The Archbishop of Newark, the Most Reverend John J. Myers was so gracious to grant me a new parish assignment as parochial vicar of St. Vincent de Paul, Bayonne, NJ effective on January 16, 2013. I sincerely thank you, our dear parishioners, for allowing me to serve God through you for one and a half years.

May our Lord Jesus, in his love and mercy, continue to bless, guide and protect us in our journey that we may love and joyfully serve him all the days of our lives. I will always keep you in my prayers. I humbly ask you to pray for me as well as I take my new parish assignment. I will certainly miss you all. Once again, I am very thankful.

NAME A ROOM IN OUR HISTORIC PARISH

LIFE CENTER Our Parish Life Center on Grove Street, which has been so beautifully renovated, has three rooms that each need a name. When the rooms are assigned to different groups for various functions we want to be able to identify the assigned room by name.

The rooms are:

1. the room surrounded by windows on three sides 2. the sitting room with the one fireplace 3. the lower level room with the Dutch Door and the one fireplace

We would like each of the rooms to be named after a saint. If you would like to name a room after a saint and to do so in honor of your family or in memory of a loved one that would be wonderful. Each named room will be marked with a picture of its saint and a plaque acknowledging the donor.

The donations received will be used to replenish our Capital Fund. If you would like to discuss this naming opportunity please contact Father Tom at 201-261-0148 or [email protected]

DID WE MAKE YOUR CHRISTMAS LIST? It’s not too late to include Saint Joseph Parish on your gift list. Our parish depends upon your financial support, especially at this time of year to meet its larger expenses. We have a great parish—that is evident from our Annual Report. To continue to do those good things, our parish needs our financial support.

The members of our Parish Finance Council and I encourage you to join us in making a generous, sacrificial gift to Saint Joseph Church. Our parish depends upon you and me! Gifts to the Christmas Collection may be made up to and including January 13, the last day of the Christmas Season. Please memo your check or offering envelope “CHRISTMAS COLLECTION.” Wishing you a blessed Christmas Season and a Happy New Year! Love, Father Tom Iwanowski

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee

The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from

Luke 2:41-52.

Today is the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and

Joseph. When Jesus was alive, people did not travel by a

car or plane. They would walk with a group of people.

When Jesus was 12 years old, Jesus, Mary and Joseph

went as a family to Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of

Passover. After the feast was over, Mary and Joseph left

Jerusalem thinking that Jesus was with some of the other

people in their group. When they found out that he was not

with them, they immediately went back to Jerusalem to

look for Jesus.

When they found Jesus, he was talking to the teachers in

the Temple. He was listening and asking questions. Mary

and Joseph were very relieved to find him but at the same

time, Mary was annoyed. She asked Jesus, “Son, why have

you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking

for you with great anxiety.” He asked them, “Why were

you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in

my Father’s house?” Mary and Joseph did not understand

but gathered up Jesus. He went with them and was

obedient to them. Years later, Mary would come to

understand what Jesus meant. But for now she was

relieved and glad to have found him.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph make up the Holy Family. Your

family should also be a “holy family.” Jesus shows us that

as a family we have to care for each other and help one

another. This is why it is SO important that you are

obedient to your parents and do what they tell you. Even

Jesus was obedient to his parents.

MISSION OF THE WEEK

I will always tell my parents where I am going

so that they will not worry.

I will thank God for the members of my family

and ask God to keep them safe in the coming New Year.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

WE WILL SEE YOU NEXT SUNDAY

JANUARY 6

Mary and Joseph found Jesus teaching in the Temple.
